Freshwater Slough Histories, Susie Van Kirk Oct 2006

Freshwater Slough Histories, Susie Van Kirk

Susie Van Kirk Papers

In 2000, Rick Storre purchased 80 acres from the Roy Fulton Estate for the purpose of developing a native plant nursery, which utilizes the barn, dairy, and adjoining land, but left much of the property in a natural state. Recognizing the value of this former marsh land and Freshwater Slough and its tributary Wood Creek, Storre began working with McBain and Trush, an environmental consulting firm that specializes in aquatic systems, to develop an enhancement plan for his property. The result was the Freshwater Slough Estuary Rehabilitation Project, 2005, which provides the framework for enhancement activities on the estuary, creek …

Changing Maine, 1960-2010: Teaching Guide, Richard Barringer, New England Environmental Finance Center Jul 2006

Changing Maine, 1960-2010: Teaching Guide, Richard Barringer, New England Environmental Finance Center

Maine History & Policy Development

Unlike forty years ago, none of us is now certain what the future holds for Maine – except that it will be different. Maine has been transformed by the events of the recent decades. We have come into a new world, a new time – a new historical era, if you will. This new era, like previous eras in Maine history, will require of us new ways of thinking, new ways of understanding, new ways of organizing ourselves as a community of people, if the values and culture we share and cherish are to endure and flourish.

Gargoyles On Glatfelter Hall, Katherine D. Anthony Apr 2006

Gargoyles On Glatfelter Hall, Katherine D. Anthony

Hidden in Plain Sight Projects

When one walks around the campus of Gettysburg College, Glatfelter Hall towers above them, as one of the College’s most commanding edifices. One takes notice of the arched doorways, sunken windows, and the giant bell tower whose occupant chimes on the hour. What one may not notice are the eyes watching from the brownstone; faces and creatures at home in the stone, surveying your every move. Grotesques and gargoyles sit in the moldings, on the window sills and at the junction where roof and wall meet, hidden from the eye that does not have the compulsion to look. These architectural …
