Strategies Human Resource And Line Managers Use To Reduce Workplace Bullying, Gregory James Brown
Strategies Human Resource And Line Managers Use To Reduce Workplace Bullying, Gregory James Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Workplace bullying is a growing problem that costs companies billions of dollars each year. Human resource leaders who do not employ strategies to reduce workplace bullying may experience poor organizational performance and high turnover rates. Grounded in the organizational culture workplace bullying model, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies human resource and line managers (HRLM) use to reduce workplace bullying. Participants were five HRLM who managed programs that successfully reduced workplace bullying in Michigan. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and a review of archival documents. Yin’s five-phase analytic cycle was used to guide the …

Copycat Mass Killings: How Personality Might Moderate Identification With Antisocial Characters, Emily R. Mazzurco
Copycat Mass Killings: How Personality Might Moderate Identification With Antisocial Characters, Emily R. Mazzurco
Kean Quest
Research indicates that certain personality traits are prevalent within mass killers. Aggression, social rejection, narcissism, fame-seeking, low self-esteem, and depression are commonalities with mass killers, specifically mass shooters. Identification or idolizing antisocial fictional characters is also a common behavior within these types of offenders. These types of killers often draw inspiration for their own crimes from past criminals or from film and TV, thus committing what is known as a copycat crime. The purpose of the current study will be to examine the effects of social rejection and instigation on the likelihood of identifying with an antisocial character in young …

South Africa went through a gruesome system of segregation known as apartheid, from 1948 until 1994 which enforced spatial and racial divisions through limiting access to spaces, places and (im)mobilities. Despite the formal ending of apartheid in 1994, and some changes it brought to the divided and wounded country, the neo-apartheid spatial structure of the regime lives on in some form or other, particularly in Cape Town. This research paper sought to explore the racial segregation in the mother city further, by examining the daily movements of students from the University of Cape Town (UCT), who are part of the …

Power Of Cantilever Design In The Contemporary Architecture, Karen Hassan Beydoun, Jana Hussein, Ahmad Salame
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Cantilever is a structural form that extends horizontally and is supported by one end and free on the other while the load is distributed equally, initiated by the use of bridges and balconies in the buildings. The power of Cantilevers with its different designs is spreading throughout the world via various perspectives since it increases the ability of design creativity and gives proper solutions. However, from that point forward, a research gap that has been found missing relating the structural challenges and how it affects the design and the decisions taken by the clients/ owners paying budgets on such type …

How Have Adventure Playgrounds In The United Kingdom Adapted Post-March Lockdown In 2020?, Pete King
International Journal of Playwork Practice
Adventure playgrounds have been a feature in the United Kingdom since the 1950s. Their growth and development was underpinned by ‘thinking together’, a concept in the Communities of Practice (CoP) approach. In March 2020, the United Kingdom (UK) went into lockdown. This study aimed to find out how adventure playgrounds responded to the Covid-19 situation when they reopened in July 2020. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 18 adventure playground staff from 14 adventure playgrounds. Thematic analysis of the data constructed themes and sub-themes within four main headings: preparation for opening; reduction; targeted service and play behaviour. The results showed how …

Review Of Benefits Of Nature Experience For Young Children, Donger Liu, Guy Trainin
Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design
Progressing urbanization is having an impact on people’s lifestyles. Increasing indoor time results in the deprivation of human’s proximity to nature. Richard Louv (2008) coined the term “nature deficit disorder”, conceptualized the increasing phenomenon of children suffering from anxiety, ADHD, and obesity due to spending less time in nature and more time indoor. There is a growing body of literature focusing on the benefits of nature experience, nature exposure on young children’s physiological and psychological well-beings, such as physical health, attention, executive function, and behavioral regulation etc. This review focuses on the research articles that investigated the influence of nature …

Publications and Research
Information literacy, inquiry, and empirical observation skills are essential to undergraduate students’ success, supporting the development of their independent critical thinking skills. In this chapter, we discuss an interdisciplinary course that we, an architecture professor and a librarian, co-taught at New York City College of Technology. The course, Learning Places: Understanding the City, combines place-based learning with primary source research, developing students’ abilities to observe an urban site chosen for study and to document their observations, and in the process build a line of inquiry for further research. The documented observations, newly created primary sources in their own right, initiated …

The growth in technology and automation has influenced the construction industry to explore prefabrication alternatives in building design and construction. In addition, the shortage of skilled labor is accelerating the push for the adoption of prefabrication in building industry. This paper provides an overview of the present construction market and labor trends and summarizes various levels and categories of prefabrication. It then provides detailed information on an emerging MEP prefabricated solution known as the MEP rack systems. The implementation of the MEP rack systems is discussed with the help of a hospital case study project. It concludes with the discussion …

Case Study Of Using Unmanned Aircraft Systems To Support Bridge Inspections, Joseph M. Burgett, Gurcan Comert
The Professional Constructor
This paper presents the results of a case study conducted to evaluate the potential benefit of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones, as a tool to improve the bridge inspection workflow. The study conducted two experiments to determine how well deficiencies could be detected using a UAS. Both experiments were conducted using the same test bridge. The first experiment was carried out by the bridge inspection engineers (BIEs), who had previously inspected the bridge using traditional methods. They used the drone to search for inspection points identified in the inspection report. The second experiment was conducted by …

Stick Built Vs. Panelize Wall/Truss Framing For New Home Construction: A Time Study Labor Comparison., Eric A. Holt, Jim Anzlovar, Alexander Welsh
The Professional Constructor
Due to many trends in the construction industry (material cost increase, labor shortages, supply chain issues, pandemic, market demand outpacing supply), the homebuilding industry is looking for alternative ways to frame homes. In response to the National Housing Endowment (NHE) Request for Proposal, the researchers reviewed the literature on the housing market’s current state regarding the scale and scope of the skilled construction framers shortage and the current market share of single-family framing method; stick-built vs. panelization. Working with industry part ners, the team analyzed time studies for multiple new home builds. It was found that panelized wall framing systems …

Minority And Female Participation In Construction Industry Apprenticeship Programs, Richard Bruce, Aaron Sauer, Patrick Sells, Curtis Bradford
The Professional Constructor
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Current Population Survey, nearly 90 percent of the 10.7 million people employed in the construction industry are white males (2021). This statistic will remain unchanged unless more minorities and females are recruited into the industry. For craft workers, a primary recruitment mechanism is the registered apprenticeship program. This study analyzes the U.S. Department of Labor’s Registered Apprenticeship Database (RAPIDs) from 2000 to 2019 to identify trends for new apprentices. The study found that there was no change in the proportion of new female apprentices in the previous 20 years and no change …

Beirut Port’S Sparkle In Arabic Poetryومضة مرفأ بيروت في الشعر العربي, Samir Itani
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
The explosion that occurred at Beirut port on the 4th of August 2020 was not a transient event, but rather a dreadful disaster the Lebanese have faced. It echoed in Arabic poetry. Some depicted the disaster, some denounced it, and some depicted Beirut as a doomed city, so they lamented it. The odd thing about it is that most poets who wrote about the explosion developed short poems or poetic flashes. Their expressions came out as intense, quick, and denounced, and were therefore honest. However, the arguments presented in their poems were clashes between life and death. The results were …

Abstract: We live in a constantly changing world, a multi-faceted world vacillating between joy and happiness on one side and sadness and desolation on the other. We have indeed witnessed, recently, much sadness and misfortune resulting from both human and natural disasters. Whether individual or collective, the risks are assessed having regard to our cultural determinism, taking into account values, standards and living conditions of individuals. Our purpose, which falls within the framework of the theory of social representations (Moscovici (1986)), would be to account for the impact of the disaster on the behavior of the individual and of society, …

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Abstract: The writing, as terrible as it is, is nevertheless reassuring, because it puts the difficult moments in image, in word; it connects us to past experiences, to men and women who went through them, going through moments of hardship, but also of consolation. The goal of literature writing is not just the disaster itself, but, it is also about taking care of oneself and others and to express how society has experienced this disaster and how to remedy it. Even more, the catastrophe sometimes goes beyond the framework of the country to reach the extent of the whole world. …

Abstract: On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, exploded, causing what is considered as “the biggest technological catastrophy of the 20th century” (Svetlana Alexievitch, 1997, p. 7), four years prior to the fall of the Soviet Union, and ten years before Svetlana Alexievitch releases “Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster”. Even though many books, movies and photographs addressed the disaster, the belarusian author and journalist chose to peer into the lives of people:” I was interested in sensations, feelings of individuals who touched the unknown. BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Abstract: When it comes to talk about a disaster, it is not easy to maintain the objectivity and neutrality towards the event. Emotions can be very explicit, especially when the speaker is “related” to the people affected. “Related” with means kinship does not only mean being a member of one's family, but also of the same region, the same country, or even the same ethnic group. This research aims making a linguistic and discursive comparison between the discourse of two different cultures (Arab and Western) towards the catastrophe. We will take as an example, the disaster of the Jordanian school …

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Abstract: Catastrophe, a notion as old as man, is today considered obsolete in the scientific sphere, since it constitutes "a blinding image which distracts the researcher from his object by its capacity to dazzle" (Coanus, Duchêne, Martinais , 2004). This is how the notion of "risk" replaced that of "disaster", since a risk can be calculated, prevented, avoided, reduced, etc. The disaster would thus become a “risk that has been realized”.
The double explosion of the port of Beirut is therefore this disaster. "In five seconds: two hundred dead, one hundred and fifty missing, six thousand wounded, nine thousand buildings …
