Saving A Child (Exodus 1-2), Kevin L. Tolley Jan 2022

Saving A Child (Exodus 1-2), Kevin L. Tolley

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Exodus is arguably the most essential book in the Hebrew Bible because it depicts the pivotal events in Israel’s history and the definitive institutions of its religion. These themes have reverberated through all subsequent Jewish and Christian history.[1] Nahum Sarna wrote that the Exodus narrative “profoundly influenced ethical and social consciousness” in the Torah and was the “motivation for protecting and promoting the interests and rights of the stranger and disadvantaged of society.”[2]

Censorship Sensing: The Capabilities And Implications Of China’S Great Firewall Under Xi Jinping, Emily Quan Jan 2022

Censorship Sensing: The Capabilities And Implications Of China’S Great Firewall Under Xi Jinping, Emily Quan

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

Totaling over 989 million users at the end of 2020, Chinese Internet users interact with unprecedent amounts of data, communication, and media (Xu 2020). It is a far cry from 1987, when the first email was sent from China to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The message in the email, later popularized on QQ desktops, was this: “Across the Great Wall, we can reach every corner of the world” (越过长城,走向世 界, Yuèguò Chángchéng, Zouxiàng Shìjiè) (Internet Archive 2013).

Excitation Of The Dominant Transverse Electric Mode Of A Microstrip Patch Antenna Using A Coplanar L-Strip Feeding Technique, Matthew A. Adams Jan 2022

Excitation Of The Dominant Transverse Electric Mode Of A Microstrip Patch Antenna Using A Coplanar L-Strip Feeding Technique, Matthew A. Adams

Theses

Microstrip patch antennas are employed in a variety of commercial and military applications due to their versatility, low profile, and ability to be easily fabricated. In this thesis, a microstrip patch antenna is made from artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) unit cells that excite the dominant transverse electric (TE) mode via an L-strip coplanar with the AMC patch layer. Integration of the L-strip into the unit cell layer of the AMC patch and the ground layer of the AMC patch is investigated and full-wave analyzed. To improve gain radiation pattern symmetry about the broadside direction, the AMC patch is shifted laterally …

“The Wind And The Fire To Be My Chariot”: The Anachronism That Wasn’T, John Gee Jan 2022

“The Wind And The Fire To Be My Chariot”: The Anachronism That Wasn’T, John Gee

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In the Book of Abraham, God tells Abraham in Haran, “I cause the wind and the fire to be my chariot” (Abraham 2:7). While this initially might appear to be an anachronism, as the chariot is normally thought to have been introduced later, archaeological finds of chariots at the site of Harran predate Abraham by hundreds of years.

Through The Labyrinth: Lived Experiences Of Women And The Superintendency, Michelle Christine Graham Jan 2022

Through The Labyrinth: Lived Experiences Of Women And The Superintendency, Michelle Christine Graham

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Men continue to dominate the superintendency in the United States, even though more than half of the specialized degrees needed to be a superintendent are earned by women (National Center for Education Statistics, 2019; Warner & Corley, 2017). Nationwide, 26.7% of the superintendents are women, while 27.75% of the superintendents in Illinois are women (Heffernan & Wasonga, 2017; Tienken, 2021). This study examined the lived experiences of five women superintendents from Illinois regarding their access to the superintendency and what they perceived to be significant factors along their trajectories. Data for this study was collected through one-on-one interviews using Seidman’s …

Heathen Husband: The Corrupting Patriarchal Hierarchy In Shakespeare’S Othello And Its Absence In Cinthio’S Gli Hecatommithi, Heavyn Renee Lester Jan 2022

Heathen Husband: The Corrupting Patriarchal Hierarchy In Shakespeare’S Othello And Its Absence In Cinthio’S Gli Hecatommithi, Heavyn Renee Lester

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This thesis places William Shakespeare’s Othello within cultural context to examine the moral corruption that Desdemona and Othello undergo once they fulfill marital roles within a patriarchal hierarchy that reflects the hierarchy religious conduct literature calls on Christians to maintain within marriage. At the same time, this thesis contrasts Shakespeare’s Othello with the Italian story of Disdemona and a Moorish captain within Decade Three of Cinthio’s Gli Hecatommithi. Hecatommithi does not ascribe a corrupting power to patriarchal hierarchy or explore Othello’s downfall in relation to his Christian faith. This thesis determines that the alterations Shakespeare makes to Othello’s source material …

Best Practices In Protestant Aid For Ukrainian Refugees: 2022, Mark R. Elliott Jan 2022

Best Practices In Protestant Aid For Ukrainian Refugees: 2022, Mark R. Elliott

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Excerpt: "Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, dramatically accelerated Moscow’s military campaign against its southwestern neighbor which had begun in 2014. This unprovoked invasion managed to generate an equally dramatic displacement of Ukrainian civilians, some 13.5 million and counting.

"Paradoxically, the humanitarian response has been both phenomenal and inadequate. It has been phenomenal in its prodigious marshalling of resources and in its determination to alleviate enormous human suffering, calling forth impulses of generosity on a massive scale on the part of the UN, the EU, numerous individual European and North American governments, businesses, foundations, relief and development …

Mansfield, Marines, And Mothers: The Politics Of Resistance To The American Intervention In North China From 1945-1946, James Robert Compton

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

At the conclusion of World War II, American citizens, including millions of deployed servicemen, reasserted the democratic freedoms they sacrificed to win the war. The American intervention in North China during the Chinese Civil War presented a ripe opportunity for civic restoration in late 1945. Controversial and seemingly at odds with the stated goals of the Second World War—namely the “Four Freedoms” and the Atlantic Charter—the US military presence in North China faced formidable domestic political obstacles. This thesis explores the nexus of domestic politics and foreign policy in the post-World War II era. Focusing on 1945-1946, this project steps …

We Need New Heroes: Tracing Heroic Masculinities From Homeric Epic To Contemporary Comic Cinema, Matthew Gallagher Jan 2022

We Need New Heroes: Tracing Heroic Masculinities From Homeric Epic To Contemporary Comic Cinema, Matthew Gallagher

Master's Theses

For as long as stories have been told, written, and performed heroes have been the measures of a culture. A people’s values, their fears, their hopes, their customs have all been preserved in the stories of their heroes, and in recent decades, I would argue, in the stories of their superheroes. Tracing modern depictions of cinematic superheroes back to some of the earliest extant narratives of heroes in Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, we see that most of our heroes in the past three millennia have been men. And in the modern explosion of superhero movies’ success and popularity, we see …

Epistemoligical Uncertainty And Political Ideology: Exploring The Relationship Between Temporal Threats And Ideology, James Donald Mcfarland Jan 2022

Epistemoligical Uncertainty And Political Ideology: Exploring The Relationship Between Temporal Threats And Ideology, James Donald Mcfarland

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Research in motivation suggests that individuals are highly attuned to perceived risk and danger and tend to form groups (physical and ideological) on the basis of the threats they collectively share with like-minded others. These initial stages of threat detection and evaluation are often found to occur through subtle environmental cues. This study examined the relationship between feelings of uneasiness and political ideology through the framing of temporal cues (e.g., past- vs. future-tense). Participants (n = 181) were recruited through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) and were randomly assigned a short vignette about a relatable life experience (e.g., purchasing a car). …

Impact Of 9/11 Attacks And Federal Funding On The National Guard’S Organizational And Operational Focus, Michael Christopher Mcmahon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is a problem in the United States national security enterprise related to the National Guard’s organizational responsibilities to state and federal governments, and it was unknown whether this hybrid structure caused capabilities to diverge between pre-9/11 and post-9/11 national security priorities. This quantitative study’s purpose was to investigate the use of Congressional funding to determine how and to what degree the National Guard’s capabilities diverged from the United States national security priorities from pre-9/11 to post-9/11 periods. Organizational change and stream analysis conceptual frameworks identified organizational challenges in overcoming inertia and resistance to change. The statistical analysis included public …

Unsexing Breastfeeding, Naomi Schoenbaum Jan 2022

Unsexing Breastfeeding, Naomi Schoenbaum

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

For half a century, constitutional sex equality doctrine has been combating harmful sex stereotypes by invalidating laws that treat women as caregivers and men as breadwinners. Yet decades after the constitutional sex equality revolution unsexed parenting roles, one area of parenting has escaped this doctrine’s exacting gaze: breastfeeding. Beginning in the 1990s in the wake of public health efforts to promote breastfeeding, a raft of laws were enacted, from insurance coverage mandates under the Affordable Care Act to workplace accommodations under the Fair Labor Standards Act, that provide substantial breastfeeding protections and benefits, but only to women. Although the sexed …

Between A Rock And A Hard Place? Ict Companies, Armed Conflict, And International Law, Arturo J. Carrillo

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

What is an ICT company to do when operating in the midst of international armed conflict like the one raging in Ukraine? How should tech company executives respond to urgent government demands – often conflicting -- to propagate or censor online content arising in the context of war, including disinformation? And what of their demands to access the personal data or communications of users, ostensibly to safeguard security but nonetheless presenting the potential for abuse? Governments make difficult demands of ICT companies by seeking to impose heavy restrictions on the free flow of information and data privacy via the latter’s …

On Implementing And Testing The Rsa Algorithm, Kien Trung Le Jan 2022

On Implementing And Testing The Rsa Algorithm, Kien Trung Le

Senior Independent Study Theses

In this work, we give a comprehensive introduction to the RSA cryptosystem, implement it in Java, and compare it empirically to three other RSA implementations. We start by giving an overview of the field of cryptography, from its primitives to the composite constructs used in the field. Then, the paper presents a basic version of the RSA algorithm. With this information in mind, we discuss several problems with this basic conception of RSA, including its speed and some potential attacks that have been attempted. Then, we discuss possible improvements that can make RSA runs faster and more secure. On the …

Violent Means For Secure Ends: How An Absence Of State Social Safety Nets Impacts The Prevalence Of Violent Political Activity, Tabitha Skornik-Hayes Jan 2022

Violent Means For Secure Ends: How An Absence Of State Social Safety Nets Impacts The Prevalence Of Violent Political Activity, Tabitha Skornik-Hayes

Senior Independent Study Theses

This thesis seeks to understand the influence of the provision of Social Safety Nets (SSNs) on the ability of Non-State Armed Groups (NSAGs) to perpetuate violence. It argues that when NSAGs provide SSNs in the absence of state provision, individuals will be more likely to engage in and justify violent activity, resulting in the growth of the NSAG and the proliferation of violence overall. The absence of state provided SSNs is proposed to deteriorate the social contract between the state and its civilians and reinforce negative sentiments and promote distrust. The absence of the state-civilian contract culminates in the creation …
