Communication 4 All: A Movement To Gain Communication For Non-Speaking Students With Autism, Elizabeth Bonker Jan 2022

Communication 4 All: A Movement To Gain Communication For Non-Speaking Students With Autism, Elizabeth Bonker

Honors Program Theses

Communication is a basic human right and the lack of access to communication for non-speaking students is a civil rights issue. Autism affects 1% of the world’s population across all racial and socioeconomic groups. Approximately 40% of autistics, 31 million people, are unable to speak. Without communication, non-speaking children are labeled “low functioning” and not educated. COMMUNICATION 4 ALL is my social innovation to ensure every child has a means to fully communicate in school. Informed by the Civil Rights and Disability Rights Movements, my thesis analyzes the current dynamics in non-speaking autism including the economic cost, communication methods, educational …

The Contention About Protection: Legal Status Of Protracted Refugees In Jordan, Bangladesh, India, And Kenya, Sierra Lamb Jan 2022

The Contention About Protection: Legal Status Of Protracted Refugees In Jordan, Bangladesh, India, And Kenya, Sierra Lamb

Theses & ETDs

The trend of international refugee crises lasting longer and longer leads to additional concerns and strains for host countries. Not only that, but long-term refugeehood creates continued dependence on the host nation and bars access to most durable solutions. One way to move from dependency to self-sufficiency for these refugees is to obtain a legal status that allows them to engage with their host society in a meaningful way. This study posits that the status of protracted refugees in a host state is to some degree dependent on the origins of the crisis (ethnic cleansing versus civil war) and on …

Making Waves: Blackness And Transnational Racialized Self-Fashioning By South Korean Hip-Hop Artists, Gwen Roberts Jan 2022

Making Waves: Blackness And Transnational Racialized Self-Fashioning By South Korean Hip-Hop Artists, Gwen Roberts

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines a selection of songs by various mainstream Korean hip-hop artists to understand how they perform Blackness in a transnational context. This research employs a qualitative content analysis of song lyrics from twenty-four songs selected through both convenience and purposeful sampling. The songs examined are from thirty-nine hip-hop artists, both Korean and Korean-American/Canadian, who self-identified as Korean hip-hop artists. Along with supplemental theories, Marc D. Perry's "self-fashioning" (2008) and Geoff Harkness' "situational authenticity" (2012) are central theoretical frameworks in this thesis. The findings from the content analysis are organized into four themes: linguistics, culture/positionality, conventions, and class status. …

Invented Tanzania: The Cold War Influences On Nyerere’S Ujamaa Policies, Adrienne Hill Jan 2022

Invented Tanzania: The Cold War Influences On Nyerere’S Ujamaa Policies, Adrienne Hill

Theses & ETDs

This thesis argues that Tanzania’s socialist policies in the 1960s were heavily influenced by foreign sources, in contrast to what President Nyerere tried to brand as a homegrown form of socialism that harkened back to a pre-colonial era before the nation-state of Tanzania ever existed. It examines how foreign aid affected the villagization scheme and the cultural programs President Nyerere enacted to turn Tanzania into a developed state. It also analyzes how the creation of a cultural identity for the new state of Tanzania also affected Nyerere’s choices of foreign aid. This paper also argues that by admiring the Chinese …

Preferred Leadership Style, Cognitive Operator Competencies, And Senior Leader Competencies Exhibited By United States Marine Corps Special Operations Officers: A Quantitative Non-Experimental Study, Timothy John Scott Jan 2022

Preferred Leadership Style, Cognitive Operator Competencies, And Senior Leader Competencies Exhibited By United States Marine Corps Special Operations Officers: A Quantitative Non-Experimental Study, Timothy John Scott

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Research identifies existing commonalities between leadership style and conceptual, technical, and interpersonal competencies. Marine Forces Special Operations Command has not explored leadership style and leader competencies and how they relate to the cognitive operator concept described in Marine Special Operations Forces 2030: A Strategic Vision for the Future. By not thoroughly exploring how they relate, Marine Forces Special Operations Command may not understand the level of interdependence between leadership style and senior leader competencies and the mastery of cognitive operator competencies. This quantitative non-experimental study explores the relationship between preferred leadership style, cognitive operator competencies, and senior leader competencies …

Drugs, Ethnic Profiling, And The American Perception Of Colombian Immigrants, 1979-1990, Laurisa Sastoque Jan 2022

Drugs, Ethnic Profiling, And The American Perception Of Colombian Immigrants, 1979-1990, Laurisa Sastoque

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper analyzes how the media’s portrayal of Colombian drug trafficking turned into a stigma that affected the Colombian community in the United States. By reviewing periodical sources between the years 1979-1990, this paper argues that the formation of the drug trafficking stigma stems from the media's almost exclusive portrayal of Colombians as drug traffickers, within a context of U.S.-Colombia relations that encompassed tensions regarding responsibility for the growing transnational drug problem. Ultimately, this study proves that the drug trafficking stigma for Colombian immigrants is inherently tied to how American society viewed the Colombian government’s actions in the war on …

Comparative Studies Of Gender-Based Violence In Mexico And Central America, Daniela M. Buduen Jan 2022

Comparative Studies Of Gender-Based Violence In Mexico And Central America, Daniela M. Buduen

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis intends to explore the conditions of gender-based violence in Latin America and how it interacts with government type, crime rates, and religion. Currently, feminicide is perceived at higher rates in countries such as Mexico and Guatemala. A significantly higher indigenous community, Catholicism, and increased crime organizations are also present in these countries. Therefore, to uphold fundamental human rights, there needs to be a change in how gender-based violence, especially feminicide, is reported. The discussion will include a connection between the variables listed.

Citizen Trust And Governments' Response To Disasters, Berenice Belizaire Jan 2022

Citizen Trust And Governments' Response To Disasters, Berenice Belizaire

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The purpose of this descriptive study is to determine if there is a difference in citizen trust in Orange County government regarding the handling of disaster. Various dimensions like competence, benevolence, and integrity can determine a citizen's trust within its government. Disasters, such as man-made and natural, are described as a disruption to society through widespread damage to people and material. Counties experience man-made and natural disasters. Depending on its response to the incidents, counties can determine if the citizens view the county as a trustworthy and responsible government body. This study explored if there were differences in citizen trust …

The Federal Response To Covid-19: Lessons From The Pandemic, Nancy J. Knauer Jan 2022

The Federal Response To Covid-19: Lessons From The Pandemic, Nancy J. Knauer

UC Law Journal

When the first suspected human-to-human transmission of the novel coronavirus was reported in January 2020, the United States had in place an elaborate set of pandemic disaster and response plans that spanned hundreds of pages. The George W. Bush administration spearheaded national pandemic planning in 2005 as part of the post-September 11 efforts to modernize the country’s disaster response capabilities. Subsequent administrations revisited and revised the various pandemic plans, including the Trump administration as recently as 2017 and 2018.

Despite these detailed plans, the Trump administration was slow to respond to the emerging public health crisis or implement any of …

An Exploratory Analysis Of How Maya Angelou, Audre Lorde, And Patrisse Cullors Radicalized The Meaning And Practice Of Self-Care, Melanie Marie Lindsay Jan 2022

An Exploratory Analysis Of How Maya Angelou, Audre Lorde, And Patrisse Cullors Radicalized The Meaning And Practice Of Self-Care, Melanie Marie Lindsay

CGU Theses & Dissertations

My dissertation, “An Exploratory Analysis of How Maya Angelou, Audre Lorde, and Patrisse Cullors Radicalized the Meaning and Practice of Self-Care”, hypothesizes that we can conceive a practice of self-care using an abolitionist lens to examine the writings and performances of three Black feminists Maya Angelou, Audre Lorde, and Patrisse Cullors. Abolitionist self-care is a response to the political structures that directly affect marginalized communities, and it evaluates the numerous ways that Black women have used their voice to challenge systems of oppression. If we examine their thinking as expressed through their poetry, their performances (including activism), and their self-life-writing, …

Deepfakes: Ai Technology Of The Future, Hosanna Root Jan 2022

Deepfakes: Ai Technology Of The Future, Hosanna Root

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

Deepfakes technology’s danger stems from its ability to create realistic but fake synthesized media that people often identify as something that is real. With this powerful technology in the wrong hands, deepfakes can cause devastating havoc through information warfare, election campaign disruptions, and more, creating distrust in society. Disinformation is already rampant today, even without wide deployments of deepfakes, which is concerning given the fact that deepfakes’ nefarious full potentials are yet to be reached.

Gender And Counterterrorism: How The United States' Underestimation Of Women's Roles In Violent Extremism Threatens National Security, Brianna N. Bulski Jan 2022

Gender And Counterterrorism: How The United States' Underestimation Of Women's Roles In Violent Extremism Threatens National Security, Brianna N. Bulski

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

Discourse surrounding conflict and terrorism is often confined by gendered binaries which conflate masculinity with violence and femininity with peace and passivity. The social adoption of these archetypes has encouraged policy makers and security officials to paint men as combatants or orchestrators of extremism, while women are thought of as mere collaterals to war. However, the number of women involved in extremist groups is rising both domestically and abroad. As the essentialization of femininity becomes increasingly dangerous, the exigency to reimagine national security initiatives grows. This comment argues that the United States has reached a critical juncture in its counterterrorism …

La Olla Y Los Patios: An Ethnography Of Place, Selfhood, Violence, And Rehabilitation In Bogotá, Andrés Romero Jan 2022

La Olla Y Los Patios: An Ethnography Of Place, Selfhood, Violence, And Rehabilitation In Bogotá, Andrés Romero

Wayne State University Dissertations

In the early hours of May 28, 2016, the mayor of Bogotá, along with the Colombian military and SpecialForces, seized the biggest olla or open-air drug market in Colombia at the time. The olla known as “El Bronx” was a three-block area in downtown Bogotá and where over 2,000 people found shelter under the authority of paramilitary affiliated crime bands controlling the city’s drug trade. Widely depicted by the media and the broader polity as an “inferno,” El Bronx was regarded as a space where those socially relegated outside of the human were encumbered by seemingly endless transgression and drug …

Exploring The Role Of Attachment Trauma In The Complex Ptsd Victim’S Self-Concept, Sadia Upright Jan 2022

Exploring The Role Of Attachment Trauma In The Complex Ptsd Victim’S Self-Concept, Sadia Upright

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Complex posttraumatic stress disorder is a very serious mental health condition with long-term side effects that impact a victim’s quality of life. Many studies have been conducted that explore various aspects of complex posttraumatic stress disorder. However, there is a gap in research exploring the role of attachment trauma in the development of self-concept for complex posttraumatic stress disorder victims. This gap is relevant because treatment of this population has been decisively limited and attachment trauma has been found to be a correlate among many psychiatric groups. By identifying how attachment trauma develops self-concept, researchers and clinicians can be better …

Endarkened Joy: A Black Woman’S Critical Autoethnography Of (Re)Membering Self Through Generational Tales Of Spirituality, Social (In)Justice, And Education, Rhemma D. Payne Jan 2022

Endarkened Joy: A Black Woman’S Critical Autoethnography Of (Re)Membering Self Through Generational Tales Of Spirituality, Social (In)Justice, And Education, Rhemma D. Payne

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Counselor education lacks representation and visibility of Black women and women of color scholars and professionals despite ongoing efforts to promote cultural diversity and inclusion within the field. Researchers have explored the externalized stereotypes of identity for Black women; however, little is known about the internalized beliefs of these stereotypical identities and the impact on advocacy and (un)wellness in academic settings. The purpose of this critical autoethnography was to present an insider’s view of a Black woman’s nuanced experiences of internalization of stereotypes while completing a counselor education doctoral program. Using an endarkened feminist onto-epistemological framework to guide the research, …

Innate Property: The Danger Of Incongruency Between Law And The Biological And Behavioral Roots Of Property And Possessiveness, Aaron Schwabach Jan 2022

Innate Property: The Danger Of Incongruency Between Law And The Biological And Behavioral Roots Of Property And Possessiveness, Aaron Schwabach

Cardozo Law Review de•novo

Property law is, in some areas, dangerously out of step with property expectations. Property—the idea that a place, object, or idea can belong to a person—is at the root of the world’s economies and thus also at the root of much of its laws. Property is neither solely a creature of positive law, nor of some abstract natural law with a moral underpinning, but rather may be biologically determined, much as Noam Chomsky proposed for languages in Aspects of the Theory of Syntax.1 The idea that ownership is at least behaviorally, and perhaps to some extent instinctively, determined has been …

Delphi Study Of International Cybersecurity Norms, Kenneth J. Biskner Jan 2022

Delphi Study Of International Cybersecurity Norms, Kenneth J. Biskner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Unregulated state cyberattacks are an urgent threat to international peace and security because of the costs they impose and the devastating effects they can create. However, international norms governing state cyberattacks (international cybersecurity norms) have not yet emerged. The lack of meaningful consequences for state cyberattacks, and the high rewards derived from them, incentivize states to engage in this new form of hostile conduct (cyberconflict). The problem addressed in this modified Delphi study was the persistent struggle between authoritarian and democratic states over competing international cybersecurity norms that cause cyberconflict to remain unregulated. Kingdon’s multiple streams framework was used as …

The Psychological Impact Of Covid-19, Medina Marie Hudson-Odoi Jan 2022

The Psychological Impact Of Covid-19, Medina Marie Hudson-Odoi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractEmployees from a large government agency were abruptly switched to telework for an extended period of time. There was no plan to address potential psychological stressors associated with the disruption of work-family-life balance that emerged as a result of COVID-19. A knowledge gap in how to support employees was apparent from discussions during team and administrative meetings. The project question explored whether the use of stress first-aid (SFA), an educational program, would enable employees to learn self-care strategies to address stressors in a less protected environment. The purpose of this DNP project was to provide a staff education awareness program …

Exploring Resistance Movements In Interstate Conflict And Integrated Deterrence, Michael G. Harris Jan 2022

Exploring Resistance Movements In Interstate Conflict And Integrated Deterrence, Michael G. Harris

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Despite an increase in interstate conflict, including manipulation of information and civil populations by state actors in gray zone campaigns, the study of resistance has concentrated on intrastate conflict. A detailed literature review of resistance was conducted, revealing researchable gaps in understanding of the topic, including: the resistance movements from a security studies and interstate conflict perspective, the resistance as a form of interstate conflict from the perspective of Russian and Chinese security leaders, and the integrated deterrence options in gray zone campaigns as a strategy of international conflict prevention.

Two complementary studies were conducted to explore the identified areas. …

Civilian Experiences And Military Perceptions Of The U.S. Military During Domestic Disaster Operations, Stefan Daimon Buckman Jan 2022

Civilian Experiences And Military Perceptions Of The U.S. Military During Domestic Disaster Operations, Stefan Daimon Buckman

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Since its founding, the United States has experienced social strife and humanitarian disasters, either of which can provoke a military domestic response. Political leaders have considered with caution and reservation under what circumstances to rely on the military to respond to internal domestic crises. The use of the military – including Guard, Reserve, and federal active-duty forces - to respond to internal problems continues to increase. In turn, this increase has a strong potential to change the dynamics of civil-military relations in the United States and generate new public expectations for the military. This study explored the perspectives of individuals …

The Impact Of Nato´S Ballistic Missile Defense Efforts On The Relationship With Russia, Christian Hofmann Jan 2022

The Impact Of Nato´S Ballistic Missile Defense Efforts On The Relationship With Russia, Christian Hofmann

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Strategic missile defense or anti-ballistic missile (ABM) systems are considered deterrence by denial assets. The debate on the question if these systems stabilize or destabilize the balance of power between nuclear powers is still unresolved. This work reviews this impact using the example of the East – West relationship by focusing on NATO´s missile defense efforts. This is done in two parts. The first is a historical part, reviewing the East – West relationship during the Cold War based on strategic arsenals, crisis events and arms control talks related to missile defense developments. The second part reviews the development since …
