Founding Fathers Of The Modern American Neo-Nazi Movement: The Impacts And Legacies Of Louis Beam, William Luther Pierce, And James Mason, Jon Lewis, Haroro J. Ingram, National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, And Education Center, Program On Extremism, George Washington University
Reports, Projects, and Research
This study analyzes the leadership style, impact, and enduring legacies of three crucial leaders in the white supremacist and neo-Nazi movements: Louis Beam, William Luther Pierce, and James Mason. It examines the interplay of leadership traits, significant events in the life narratives of the leader, and the legacies of these three key pioneers towards two aims. First, our analysis draws on the CIP Leadership Framework and charismatic leadership studies to assess the respective leadership roles of Beam, Pierce, and Mason. Second, it considers how the leadership traits and ideological impact of these leaders shaped contemporary far-right movements in the United …
Victor Pelevin And Eurasianist Geopolitics, Tatiana Filimonova
Victor Pelevin And Eurasianist Geopolitics, Tatiana Filimonova
Dartmouth Scholarship
The first decades of Victor Pelevin’s writing coincided with the burst in popularity of neo-Eurasianist and neo-imperialist ideas. This paper traces the various forms that Pelevin’s treatment of civilizational and geopolitically focused ideologies has taken over the course of his career. His preoccupation with these ideas ranges from inconspicuous reflection of the Eurasian phenomenon to Eurasianism’s intensifying critique, and, eventually, to a more comprehensive engagement with concepts of classical geopolitics. If early on Pelevin’s portrayal of neo-imperialists and their ideas has been largely satirical (Empire V, 2006), in the 2010s his texts began to demonstrate a deeper entanglement …

The Anti-Plantation Uprising: Indigenous Kinship, Territories, And Communal Politics In Guatemala, 1966-1982, Sergio G. Palencia Frener
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Indigenous Maya in Guatemala lived through one of Latin America’s most intense conflicts during the second part of the twentieth century. This research focuses on Maya politics, kinship relations, and interethnic experiences in multifarious mobilization through social democratic parties, rural unions, and cooperatives (1966-1974), and the intricacies of Maya indigenous participation in peasant organizations and insurgencies during the war escalation (1976–1982). This work reassesses Maya indigenous communal politics beyond Cold War dichotomies and situates the villages as central loci to grapple with the complexity of indigenous history during the Guatemalan war. Through research in Akateko, Kaqchikel, K’iche’, and Ixil territories, …

Ethnic Tensions In The Western Balkans And The Experience Of Ethnic Minorities, Nadina Resulani
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Western Balkan has experienced a past of ethnic turmoil. From the wars in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo to ethnic tensions in Serbia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia. Understanding that ethnicity itself continues to be a salient factor in Western Balkan, the question remains how Western Balkan states were able to remove themselves from the front light of ethnic tensions considering today these countries are known as being tourist destinations, cultural and academic meccas, and democratic candidates in line to join the European Union. In reviewing and comparing the geopolitical and social environment of three Western Balkan states: Montenegro, …

Purposely Changing Church Culture When A Pandemic Forces Church Change: How The Covid Pandemic Impacted One Large Sda Church, Steve Case, Benji Ferguson
Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries
T he Carmichael SDA Church, located in the suburbs of Sacramento, California, seemed to be a gem in the Northern California Conference, with the largest membership, highest tithe, and largest pastoral staff. The pandemic put a halt to most of this church’s ministry, exposing some weaknesses and preventing the ministry it had developed over the years. Simultaneously, new forms of ministry sprung forth because of the sudden changes. The long-term impact of the pandemic challenges this church to move forward in new ways rather than attempting a restart as though nothing happened. This is a case study of how one …
The Collapse Of The Afghan State And Its Relation To Us Policy, Omar Saradi
The Collapse Of The Afghan State And Its Relation To Us Policy, Omar Saradi
University Honors Theses
The main inspiration for this has been down to my curiosity of my heritage. The events described, particularly in the 1970's, were things that were contemporary to my family, and the escape from Afghanistan as refugee was an experience that was firsthand for my dad--who escaped in 1979 to Pakistan to claim refugee status in the US. One of the things that struck me the most in his story of escaping on foot with a group of villagers, was that the centers for refugees in Pakistan were not the cleanest and housed a crowded room of people who were stuck …

Toward Understanding Japanese And Us Mainstream Media In Light Of The Invasion Of Ukraine: Conflict Training, Sophie Truesdale
University Honors Theses
In today's society, there are various ways of watching and reading the news; however, advanced marketing and technology expose us to what best matches our beliefs. Our beliefs influence which media we choose and are shaped by what we read or watch. Because of the overload of information produced by social media, 24/7 news, podcasts, and a barrage of online news sources, it can be challenging to absorb all the information that we gather. In times of extremity, we are so consumed by the incursion of information that we forget to question and probe. When there is heightened violence and …
War, Decisions, И Деньги: Analyzing Private Military Companies In American And Russian Contexts, Tara Harper
War, Decisions, И Деньги: Analyzing Private Military Companies In American And Russian Contexts, Tara Harper
University Honors Theses
Private Military Companies (PMCs) have become increasingly prevalent throughout the global security landscape. Their rise has led war - and the tools state's use to wage it - to become increasingly privatized with each state's varied approach to the evolving security landscape. Understanding and comparing the role of PMCs in such states as the U.S. and Russia allows for greater clarity regarding the industry as a whole, due to the structural differences in each state's approach to utilizing these companies. Regarding the Russian context, such companies as the Wagner Group have increasingly gained global attention due to how they are …

Aging And Well-Being On Rotuma In Historical Perspective, Alan Howard, Jan Rensel
Pacific Studies
In this article, we present a historical overview of the conditions affecting the experience of aging among Rotumans on their home island. We draw on an array of cultural, social, and personal data derived from censuses, fieldwork, and archival sources covering more than one hundred years on Rotuma, which we divide into three segments for comparison: a baseline period (1903–60), the transition to modernity (1960–99), and the twenty-first century (2000–19). Among the changes that have affected the welfare of the elderly on the island are medical conditions, household size and composition, economic changes, and the proportion of older people on …

Fraught Aging And Frayed Social Networks, Laura Zimmer-Tamakoshi
Pacific Studies
This article looks at the challenges of aging in Gende society and why the Papua New Guinea government should consider a safety net for more vulnerable populations. It begins with an overview of how the Gende used their exchange system over many generations to deal with periods of extreme uncertainty and inequality. Investing in a moral economy that encouraged gender equality and expansive kin relations and obligations, the Gende weathered tribal warfare that drove them off their traditional lands long ago. Moving into sparsely populated mountains in what is now Madang Province, Gende became middlemen in trade routes connecting the …
Cyberoperations And Sovereignty In International Law, Joel Wei Xuan Fun
Cyberoperations And Sovereignty In International Law, Joel Wei Xuan Fun
Singapore Law Journal (Lexicon)
The cyberspace is sometimes seen as having no jurisdictional boundaries, given that no single state controls the entirety of the cyberspace. At the same time, given how pervasive the cyberspace has become today, many important interests of states now lie in the domain of cyberspace. This uneasy tension has led to many questions involving the intersectionality between the state’s sovereignty over its territory and the cyberspace, which is exacerbated when states use the cyberspace to conduct their myriad operations. This paper seeks to delineate permissible and impermissible cyberoperations and argues that the present international law on sovereignty is sufficiently robust …

Terrorist Attacks Against Sports Venues: Emerging Trends And Characteristics Spanning 50 Years, Grace R Rahman, Gregory N Jasani, Stephen Y Liang
2020-Current year OA Pubs
INTRODUCTION: Sports venues foster community and support local economies. Due to their capacity to host hundreds to thousands of spectators, sports venues are vulnerable to becoming targets of terrorism. Types of venues targeted, regional trends, and methods of attack employed world-wide have not been well-described.
METHODS: A search of the Global Terrorism Database (GTD) was conducted from 1970 through the end of 2019. Pre-coded variables for target type "business" and target subtype "entertainment/cultural/stadium/casino" were used to identify attacks involving venues where sports events might be viewed by spectators as part of an audience. Sports venues were specifically identified using the …
Evolutions In Suicide Bombing: Exploring The Relationship Between The Tactic And Its Application By Non-State Armed Groups Across Various Conflict Zones Over Time, David E. Firester
Evolutions In Suicide Bombing: Exploring The Relationship Between The Tactic And Its Application By Non-State Armed Groups Across Various Conflict Zones Over Time, David E. Firester
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The following dissertation considers variations in the use of suicide bombing by Non-State Armed Groups (NSAGs), at the organizational level of analysis. It is both a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the conditions under which insurgents that accept the practice’s legitimacy have applied it to a range of specified target sets. The broad focus of this endeavor centers on unpacking insurgent groups’ behaviors across a number of unique battlespaces, but the main question I seek to answer is: what decision dynamics accompany violent non-state actors’ use of suicide bombing and how do we interpret their behavioral interaction across various conflict …
Numbered, Weighed, Divided: Revolution And/As Apocalypse In The Modern Liberal Tradition, Asher J. Wycoff
Numbered, Weighed, Divided: Revolution And/As Apocalypse In The Modern Liberal Tradition, Asher J. Wycoff
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A long-standing political-theological critique contends that liberalism lacks the capacity to address theological challenges, and qualitative political challenges more generally. This charge is prevalent in our current age of crises, when the capacity to address such challenges is essential to any political tradition’s self-legitimation. I argue that the liberal tradition, broadly conceived, has long contended with theological challenges, particularly during modern revolutionary periods. Theological discourses, especially eschatological ones, circulate widely in these moments. Modern political actors impute cosmic significance to the events of their present, with a central analogy crystallizing between revolution and apocalypse. Reading major theorists of three modern …

Legitimacy In Conflict Contexts: Shifting Rebel Engagement In Sierra Leone And The Presence Of Private Contractors, Anne Lauder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The growth of non-state actors has significantly changed the nature of conflict. Rebel groups increasingly challenge state rule while private military and security companies (PMSCs) increasingly enter conflict spaces on behalf of a variety of actors, including states seeking to suppress insurgencies. This case study of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) during Sierra Leone’s civil war between 1991-2002 contributes to emerging work on rebel behavior by examining how rebel’s legitimacy-seeking behavior might evolve when PMSCs enter a conflict context. I explore the ways that PMSCs can shift perceived incentive structures surrounding insurgents’ interpretations of and engagements with legitimacy during conflict, …
China's Aggression In The 21st Century, Masaki J. Aerts
China's Aggression In The 21st Century, Masaki J. Aerts
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
ii ABSTRACT: The Thucydides Trap is a pattern for identifying rising powers preparing to disrupt the status quo by challenging an already established one. Assuming this pattern is correct, and if we fail to take actions to modify this path, then it is not at all unlikely that the long-elevating tensions between China and its adversaries (the US and its allies) will eventually reach a point of critical mass – and even result in direct military conflict. This paper will look to outline the tactics and actions taken by China. This will then be followed by my argument for proactive …

Reconstructing Identity: Carlton Burgan, Patient Zero In The Development Of Plastic Surgery, Civil War Through World War I, Teresa M. George
Reconstructing Identity: Carlton Burgan, Patient Zero In The Development Of Plastic Surgery, Civil War Through World War I, Teresa M. George
Master's Theses
Plastic surgery has played an integral role in helping people achieve societal expectations of appropriate physical appearance since its inception. Through the story of Carlton Burgan, a Union soldier during the American Civil War, who suffered severe facial trauma by mercury poisoning, this thesis hopes to reconstruct the conversation around plastic surgery’s origins as it is influenced by societal standards of the day. Specifically, this thesis argues that the seminal moments leading to plastic surgery being seen as a worthwhile medical specialty was during the Civil War, not World War I as so many scholars have put forth. Violent acts …
After Mccleskey, Robert L. Tsai
After Mccleskey, Robert L. Tsai
Faculty Scholarship
In the 1987 decision, McCleskey v. Kemp, the Supreme Court rejected a black death row inmate's argument that significant racial disparities in the administration of Georgia's capital punishment laws violated the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. In brushing aside the most sophisticated empirical study of a state 's capital practices to date, that ruling seemingly slammed the door on structural inequality claims against the criminal justice system. Most accounts of the case end after noting the ruling's incompatibility with more robust theories of equality and meditating on the deep sense of demoralization felt by social justice advocates. One might …

A System Dynamics Approach To Evaluate Advanced Persistent Threat Vectors, Mathew Nicho, Christopher D. Mcdermott, Hussein Fakhry, Shini Girija
All Works
Cyber-attacks targeting high-profile entities are focused, persistent, and employ common vectors with varying levels of sophistication to exploit social-technical vulnerabilities. Advanced persistent threats (APTs) deploy zero-day malware against such targets to gain entry through multiple security layers, exploiting the dynamic interplay of vulnerabilities in the target network. System dynamics (SD) offers an alternative approach to analyze non-linear, complex, and dynamic social-technical systems. This research applied SD to three high-profile APT attacks - Equifax, Carphone, and Zomato - to identify and simulate socio-technical variables leading to breaches. By modeling APTs using SD, managers can evaluate threats, predict attacks, and reduce damage …
Nuclear Bluff Learning: Nuclear Signaling In Times Of Crisis, Dina Tawfik
Nuclear Bluff Learning: Nuclear Signaling In Times Of Crisis, Dina Tawfik
Theses and Dissertations
The thesis investigates the role of nuclear signaling by adopting a comparative case study approach to compare between two nuclear alert crises that occurred during the Cold War and two nuclear alert crises that occurred post-Cold War. The case studies included are as follows: the 1969 US nuclear alert; the 1973 Middle East nuclear alert; the 2017 US-North Korean nuclear alert; and the 2022 Russian nuclear alert. I investigate why leaders choose to employ this tactic despite its conspicuous dangers, and more importantly, I draw comparisons and similarities between the case studies to analyze how the Cold War nuclear alert …

BACKGROUND: With the rising global prevalence of fatty liver disease related to metabolic dysfunction, the association of this common liver condition with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become increasingly evident. In 2020, the more inclusive term metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was proposed to replace the term non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The observed association between MAFLD and CKD and our understanding that CKD can be a consequence of underlying metabolic dysfunction support the notion that individuals with MAFLD are at higher risk of having and developing CKD compared with those without MAFLD. However, to date, there is no …
The Fight Against The Threat Of Witchcraft And Paganism In Anglo-Saxon England, Russell I. Knapp
The Fight Against The Threat Of Witchcraft And Paganism In Anglo-Saxon England, Russell I. Knapp
Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars
Unlike the general assumption that England was completely Christianized after Augustine’s mission to the island, witchcraft and paganism thrived all throughout the Christian period of Anglo-Saxon history. Sources condemning witchcraft and paganism increased during the Danish raids in the mid-ninth century and beyond due to an increased sense of a perceived threat of paganism. King Alfred himself reacted to this threat by doing everything he could to strengthen his people in their Christian beliefs through education reform and his law code. The Church battled against the perceived threat through penitentials–which they used to discourage pagan practices. Lay-people fought against …
The Success Of Project Mercury Through The Persona Of The Mercury Seven, Cameron D. Reagan
The Success Of Project Mercury Through The Persona Of The Mercury Seven, Cameron D. Reagan
Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars
There has been no shortage of literature written on the Mercury Space Program, focusing on many different aspects ranging from the personnel, technology, politics, and achievements of the program. The prevailing discussion of the space program focuses on the astronauts themselves as they gained celebrity status long before they had done anything to merit it. The vast body of scholarship on the topic takes the popularity of the Mercury Seven astronauts as matter-of-fact rather than viewing it as manufactured by NASA in order to bolster support for a largely unproven space program. By emphasizing the “everyman” aspect of the astronauts, …
Motion-Resistant Pulse Oximetry, Ludvik Alkhoury
Motion-Resistant Pulse Oximetry, Ludvik Alkhoury
Dissertations
The measurement of vital signs ? such as peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate (HR) levels ? by a pulse oximeter is studied. The pulse oximeter is a non-invasive device that measures photoplethysmography (PPG) signals and extracts vital signs from them. However, the quality of the PPG signal measured by oximetry sensors is known to deteriorate in the presence of substantial human and sensor movements contributing to the measurement noise. Methods to suppress such noise from PPG signals measured by an oximeter and to calculate the associated vital signs with high accuracy even when the wearer …
Sparse Methods For Blind Source Separation Of Frequency Hopping Rf Sources, Anushreya Ghosh
Sparse Methods For Blind Source Separation Of Frequency Hopping Rf Sources, Anushreya Ghosh
Dissertations
Blind source separation (BSS) is performed on frequency hopping (FH) sources. These radio frequency (RF) signals are observed by a uniform linear array (ULA) over a Spatial Channel Model (SCM) in four different propagation environments: (i) line-of-sight (LOS), (ii) single-cluster, (iii) multiple-cluster, and (iv) LOS with interference. The sources are spatially sparse, and their activity is intermittent and assumed to follow a hidden Markov model (HMM). BSS is achieved by utilizing direction of arrival (DOA) of the sources and clusters. A sparse detection framework is applied to obtain estimates of the sources' FH and DOA patterns. The solutions are binned …

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023
In this study, we explored the possibility of objectively assessing the progress in manual flying skills by student pilots using Virtual Reality (VR). Using a VR flight simulator of the Pilatus PC-7 training aircraft, fifteen participants without flying experience practiced basic flight maneuvers based on self-study and without receiving feedback. Relevant flight performance measures were normalized and a learning curve was fitted, representing learning speed and end-level. During some runs an N-back task was included as a secondary task to quantify the participants’ cognitive capacity. Interestingly, performance on the N-back was not a good predictor of someone’s learning curve. The …
