Pulsed Dielectric Breakdown And Permittivity Characterization Of Composite Solid Insulators In Pulsed Power Systems, Shawn T. Scoggin
Pulsed Dielectric Breakdown And Permittivity Characterization Of Composite Solid Insulators In Pulsed Power Systems, Shawn T. Scoggin
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
In high voltage pulsed power systems, liquids and gases are often used as insulating materials because they offer high breakdown strengths, conform around complex geometries, and are self-healing, but they can introduce significant engineering challenges and restrictions when it comes to implementing them. Solid dielectrics can be desirable for improving the maintenance requirements, shelf life, and power/energy density metrics associated with insulating high voltage pulsed power systems, however they possess design challenges of their own. Solid dielectrics are not self-healing and can be difficult to manufacture, especially around complex geometries. Epoxy dielectrics are of high interest because of their naturally …

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
In light of the increasing adoption of autonomous vehicles in our transportation networks, it is crucial to emphasize the significance of implementing strong cybersecurity protocols. These self-driving cars, which heavily depend on state-of-the-art sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), and complex communication networks, represent a remarkable advancement in technology. However, they also bring about new vulnerabilities. While it is true that autonomous vehicles have been shown to be statistically safer than traditional cars, it is important to acknowledge the growing concern surrounding cyber threats and their potential impact on the safety and reliability of these vehicles. This paper provides a thorough examination …

A response to ‘The evolution of peace’ by Luke Glowacki (December 16, 2022)
While effective institutional practices are critical for the evolution of peace certain factors deter their effectiveness. In-group and out-group dynamics may make peace difficult between culturally distinct groups. Critical ecological conditions often lead to intractable conflict over resources. And within group conflicts of interest most prominently between generations may inhibit effective peace making

Accelerated Teacher Certification Programs: The “Modern” Movement For Deculturizing Brown And Black Schools, Desiree Jackson
Accelerated Teacher Certification Programs: The “Modern” Movement For Deculturizing Brown And Black Schools, Desiree Jackson
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Many education reforms have been implemented as a solution to the ongoing problems with schooling. One of these reforms is Teach for America, and over the years, their impact has been met with criticism. Most of that criticism is mostly because of predominantly of their predominantly white members who teach in predominantly black and brown schools. The disconnect between cultures and the lack of efficient training is a combination that keeps teachers and students from learning and growing to their full potential. Schooling for black children in America has not always been met with their best interest at heart. The …

Numerous investigations have shown that non-equilibrium discharges at atmospheric pressure, also known as "cold atmospheric plasma" (CAP) are efficient to remove biological contaminants from surfaces of a variety of materials. Recently, CAP has quickly advanced as a technique for microbial cleaning, wound healing, and cancer therapy due to the chemical and biologically active radicals it produces, known collectively as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). This article reviews studies pertaining to one of the atmospheric plasma sources known as Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) which has been widely used to treat materials with microbes for sterilization, disinfection, and decontamination purposes. Psychological Energy: Early Theorists In The Analytical Tradition, Michael Da
Psychological Energy: Early Theorists In The Analytical Tradition, Michael Da
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Since the dawn of Western psychology, theorists have used variations of the term “energy” to describe the dynamic forces at work within the psyche and the soma and the psychotherapeutic processes of change. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, terms used for psychological energy included “libido,” “psychic energy,” “orgone energy,” “bioenergetics,” and “psycho-energetics.” This paper uses philosophical hermeneutics to compare the major theorists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century: William James, Pierre Janet, Sigmund Freud, C. G. Jung, Wilhelm Reich, Alexander Lowen, and Roberto Assagioli. Analysis reveals these theorists generally agreed psychological energy is (a) a …

“How Did Guernica Become The Important Painting And The Universal Symbol It Is Today?", Or Lebel
MA Theses
This thesis explores the intriguing journey that propelled "Guernica" from the initial obscurity of a commissioned artwork to its current status as a globally recognized symbol. The research unravels the multifaceted processes that have contributed to the transformation of a relatively overlooked artwork into an important painting and a universal emblem of protest, antiwar, and hope. The research addresses the fundamental question of how "Guernica" evolved into an important and universally recognized painting. Answering this question allows me to explore and explain how "Guernica," despite its lack of immediate recognition, grew to possess an enduring significance. The research also tackles …

Charting Extraterritoriality: Jurisdiction, Corporate Conduct, And Environmental Harm, Kalika Mehta
National Law School of India Review
Chimni’s TWAIL critique of the principle of jurisdiction, the subject of this symposium, implicates its development with the evolution of capitalism. Against this backdrop, this paper uniquely focuses on international criminal law and the selective application of principle of extraterritorial jurisdiction, particularly its exclusion of corporate entities from prosecution for large-scale violence. Through an analysis that engages with Chimni’s critique, the paper illustrates how these extraterritorial prosecutions align with the mainstream liberal theory of jurisdiction, while also exposing gaps in corporate accountability. Further, the paper contributes to ongoing legal reform debates by exploring the proposed international crime of ecocide, a …

Warsaw Uprising Of 1944, Vanessa K. Gusciora
Warsaw Uprising Of 1944, Vanessa K. Gusciora
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 was a major World War II operation by the Polish resistance Home Army (Armia Krajowa) to liberate Warsaw from Nazi German occupation. It began on August 1, 1944, and lasted 63 days, as the poorly equipped resistance fought against well-armed German forces. The Soviet Red Army, stationed across the Vistula River, offered no significant aid, leaving the insurgents isolated. The uprising was brutally suppressed, resulting in approximately 200,000 Polish civilian and combatant deaths. Warsaw was left in ruins, and the city’s population was forcibly expelled. Despite its tragic outcome, the uprising symbolized Polish resistance and …

Sure Imagination: Distinguishing Mnemotechnics From Spatial Mnemonics, Ian Goodrich
Sure Imagination: Distinguishing Mnemotechnics From Spatial Mnemonics, Ian Goodrich
West Chester University Master’s Theses
The term “mnemotechnics” has been misinterpreted by scholars due to a lack of a clear and concise definition available for reference. Though there are contemporary scholarship references to mnemotechnics, these references avoid a definition and are often in a context that does not consider how ancient rhetoricians utilized the practice. Without a concise and unified definition, the term mnemotechnics takes on a variety of divergent meanings through different scholarship, preventing a similarity in terms to ideas and obscuring the practice of the rhetoricians who utilized mnemotechnics. In this thesis, the writings of Quintilian, Augustine of Hippo, and the anonymous author …

The Sixth Warfighting Domain?: Governing The Space-Cyber Nexus, Eytan Tepper, Scott Shackelford, James B. Romano, Sergei Dmitriachev
Georgia Law Review
This Article reviews the recent emergence of the space-cyber nexus as a distinct warfighting domain, solidified during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and analyzes the (missing?) laws of space-cyber warfare. The Article further suggests a roadmap for the development of norms and rules under the constraints of contemporary geopolitics and difficulties in multilateral rulemaking. As space-based infrastructure became critical to modern militaries and economies, it has, as a result, become a prime target. While only four countries possess antisatellite missiles (United States, Russia, China, and India), cyberattacks require much less in terms of funds and technological sophistication and can also …

Looking Into The Eyes Of Aswang : Alyx Arumpac’S Aswang (2019) As A “Gothumentary” Of The Philippine War On Drugs, Jan Marvin A. Goh
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Alyx Ayn Arumpac’s Aswang (2019) navigates an intimate terrain of the Philippine “war on drugs” during Rodrigo Duterte’s administration by documenting first-hand narratives from its various affected victims. The film challenges documentary norms as it entangles the reality of extrajudicial killings with the folkloric spectre of the “aswang.” Aswang’s (2019) narratives seek to temporarily disrupt perceptions of reality and expose the underbelly of Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, as spearheaded by the program “Oplan Tokhang,” within the dark urban spaces of Manila. By employing horror as an allegorical medium, Aswang (2019) blurs the boundaries between reality and folklore, which urges its viewers …

Second-Tier Marriages, Jeremiah A. Ho
Saint Louis University Law Journal
This Essay interrogates the reasoning behind the retrenchment toward LGBTQ rights progress that has taken place since marriage equality. With marriage rights for same-sex couples now “on the books,” the Supreme Court’s treatment of same-sex couples in both Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Comm’n and 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis reveals the status quo’s hesitancy to recognize same-sex relationships on equal footing. Retrenchment, however, only describes the moment itself; it alludes to but offers no comprehensive or satisfying theory that identifies the motives behind the moves. This Essay theorizes from within the context of the Supreme Court’s LGBTQ …

The Lion, The Fox, And The President: Machiavelli's Foreign Policy And Barack Obama, Eli Chancey
Araneum: Richmond Journal of American & Global Affairs
This undergraduate thesis is a culmination of a senior seminar course focused on the works of Florentine politician and statesman Niccol. Machiavelli. Infamous for his common caricature as an amoral shoulder devil for authoritarians, Machiavelli’s works have been interpreted in countless fashions. While The Prince and the Discourses, his two most significant writings, mainly focus on domestic politics, they give some attention to international affairs. This thesis serves to identify Machiavelli’s foreign policy philosophy within these works and reconcile the differences between their varied interpretations. Then, it will turn toward a modern-day prince, President Barack Obama, to determine his level …
