"Uncle Sam Meets John Bull':· American Fur Traders' Attitudes Toward The Hudson's Bay Company, 1821-1832, Andrea Gayle Radke
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
The disgruntled British trapper cocked his rifle and shoved it into the chest of Mr. Lucien Fontenelle. Feeling that the American rivals had instigated the desertion of a fellow English trader, the gun-wielding Brit planned on taking out his frustrations on Fontenelle, the American Fur Company leader. Immediately, Fontenelle's men sprang from their horses with rifles ready, "prepared to give them Battle, should they presume to offer any further show of hostility." Cooler heads prevailed, however, and the companies parted without additional conflict.

Impacts Of Harmful Algal Blooms (Habs) On Agriculture: A Short Communication, Debabrata Sahoo, Ibrahim Busari, Heather Nix, Sarah A. White
Journal of South Carolina Water Resources
agriculture, which requires clean water, healthy soil, and adequate nutrients, is crucial to meet the growing demand for food and fiber. Over application of nutrients to meet demand has degraded surface water quality, leading to accelerated eutrophication. Cultural eutrophication is a process by which aquatic ecosystems such as ponds, lakes, and estuaries become so enriched with nutrients—primarily nitrogen and phosphorus—as to become unusable for safe consumption and ecological purposes. Eutrophication has intensified due to climate change. Increased temperatures, intense storms, and drought can drive the formation of eutrophic and hypereutrophic conditions. Hypereutrophication results in the rapid proliferation of algae and …

Towards The Design And Evaluation Of Clickbait Education Content: Leveraging User Mental Models And Learning Science Principles, A. Shrestha, A. Flood, B. Hackler, Arezou Behfar, M. N. Al-Ameen
Computer Science Student Research
Clickbait refers to sensationalized or misleading post on social networking sites (e.g., Facebook) that can trick users into clicking on malicious links. Clickbait is often used in cyberattacks, especially to conduct 'social engineering attacks' that direct users to malicious websites, resulting in disclosure of users' personal information or installing malicious software (i.e., malware). Thus, clickbait has become a major security concern with the recent boom in social media use. Therefore, security education has become necessary more than ever for the safe and secure use of social media, where there is dearth in security education literature to explore how we could …

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
IMPORTANCE: The reported phenotypes of men with 47,XXY and 47,XYY syndromes include tall stature, multisystem comorbidities, and poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, knowledge about these sex chromosome aneuploidy (SCA) conditions has been derived from studies in the less than 15% of patients who are clinically diagnosed and also lack diversity in age and genetic ancestry.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of clinically diagnosed and undiagnosed X or Y chromosome aneuploidy among men enrolled in the Million Veteran Program (MVP); to describe military service metrics of men with SCAs; and to compare morbidity and mortality outcomes between men with …

Relational Leadership And Governing: Somali Clan Cultural Leadership, Farhia Abdi
Relational Leadership And Governing: Somali Clan Cultural Leadership, Farhia Abdi
The Journal of Social Encounters
This research is focused on exploring the distinction between theories of leadership and more contemporary visions of relational leading. In order to do so, the specific case of traditional clan structure seen in the Somali state will be examined, and parallels between the two will be drawn. This paper argues that the old Somali tradition shares much in common with current writing on relational leadership (Uhl-Bien, 2006) and, therefore, can expand our understanding and support for a form of leadership that transcends traditional, individualist, hierarchical leadership. This argument will be supported by a detailed investigation into clan politics, leadership, and …

Guns, Bombs, And Pollution: Unraveling The Nexus Between Warfare, Terrorism, And Ecological Devastation In Iraq, Hogr Tarkhani
The Journal of Social Encounters
Iraq's environment has experienced significant pollution and degradation, earning it the dubious distinction of being one of the most polluted and degraded regions globally, according to the Globe Pollution Review. The past three decades of armed conflict have exacted a heavy toll on the country, resulting in widespread human suffering, including countless fatalities, injuries, and a massive displacement of people. Amidst this death and destruction, the ecosystem has also endured severe damage, and its decline carries long-lasting implications.
The environmental crisis in Iraq has been worsened by the presence of extremist groups such as the Islamic State (ISIS) and various …
Environmental Peacebuilding: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Ken Conca
Environmental Peacebuilding: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Ken Conca
The Journal of Social Encounters
The field of environmental peacebuilding emerged as a counter to the idea that violent conflict was an inevitable byproduct of environmental change. Two decades ago, my colleague Geoffrey Dabelko and I published a book, Environmental Peacemaking, sketching the argument that ecological interdependencies could be instrumentalized as a force for peace (Conca & Dabelko, 2002). Other early works from this period focused on the peace opportunities in biodiversity conservation (Matthew et al., 2002) and transboundary protected areas (Brock, 1991; Ali, 2007). Since that time, a substantial community of research and practice has emerged around these ideas. In this essay I discuss …

The Art Speaks For Itself: Aura And Corruption In Cuarón’S Children Of Men, Colby Orton
Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism
In the world of Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men, the audience comes face to face with many scenes and shots that are filled with symbolism that it may become difficult to pick up on all the excellent directional moves made by Cuarón. This essay will closely analyze not only the clever placement of art but the heavy symbolic nature that each of these art pieces possess; furthermore, I will analyze the implications that these symbolic references bring to the film and how these implications complicate the film while furthering the difficult themes proposed by Cuarón. To achieve the highest understanding …

School of Psychology
Humans and many other animal species act in ways that benefit others. Such prosocial behaviour has been studied extensively across a range of disciplines over the last decades, but findings to date have led to conflicting conclusions about prosociality across and even within species. Here, we present a conceptual framework to study the proximate regulation of prosocial behaviour in humans, non-human primates and potentially other animals. We build on psychological definitions of prosociality and spell out three key features that need to be in place for behaviour to count as prosocial: benefitting others, intentionality, and voluntariness. We then apply this …
Amnesia, Anamnesis, And Myth-Making In Florida: A Case Study Of Chipco, Eric Hannel
Amnesia, Anamnesis, And Myth-Making In Florida: A Case Study Of Chipco, Eric Hannel
Florida Historical Quarterly
History often finds ways of retaining information deemed "valuable," while discarding information no longer of interest or importance to its scrivener. During this process, those who recount history intentionally or unintentionally forget some details while retaining others, perhaps even embellishing them for later generations. At the nexus of this amnesia and purposeful anamnesis (the way history is remembered), rests American mythmaking. Each layer of mythmaking connects with place or geography representing forgotten as well as recollected details, a reclamation of past events and altered memories that aggrandize, justify, and construct out of messy, complex, and often brutal reality, a sanitized …

Fugitives On The Front: Maroons In The Gulf Coast Borderlands War, 1812-1823, Justin Iverson
Florida Historical Quarterly
In September 1812, a "large body of Negroes and Indians" ambushed the provision lines of two companies of militiamen under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Adams Smith in northern East Florida. The "merciless negroes" attacked the Georgia soldiers to drive them out of East Florida and prevent further American expansion into the Spanish colony during the Patriot War of 1812 to 1814. Black and Seminole soldiers also attacked Colonel David Newnan, Adjutant General of the Georgia militia, when he came to Smith's aid. Many black warriors living in the area fought for survival since they were runaway plantation slaves …

The Detection Problem: An Eight-Decade Challenge: The Difficulty Of Practically Detecting And Discriminating Mines, Booby Traps, And Victim Operated Improvised Explosive Devices, Roly Evans, Tracey Temple Phd, Liz Nelson
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Reliably detecting and discriminating mines, booby traps, and victim operated improvised explosive devices remains a stubborn problem for both humanitarian demining organizations and the military. Since mines were widely used during the Second World War, much effort has been expended on the detection problem, with limited success. The aim of being able to positively identify a device first time remains elusive since the scientific challenge of positively identifying different substances in the ground is formidable. This article critically examines the detection problem and suggests that in the continued absence of a ‘silver bullet’ technological solution, the best means currently available …

Airspace defense is part of the country's sovereignty and its existence has been recognized. However, Indonesia does not yet have a law governing its airspace. This lack of regulation has occurred since the country's independence in 1945. This study aims to determine the benefits and urgency of improving airspace resilience in Indonesia by using an intelligence analysis approach. The research method is qualitative and descriptive analytical. Intelligence analysis is a powerful tool to anticipate and mitigate threats. By conducting intelligence analysis, it means being able to predict upcoming threats. The results of this study show that intelligence analysis is very …

It should be noted that despite the general counterculture of SoCal in the late 1980s, at the time of Tribal's birth, the laid-back attitude of generation X (1965–80),4 which included apathy and disillusion with the political and 92 economic climate (that “grungy” college educated/tech savvy white American generation Xers experienced under Reagan's neo-liberalism and neo-conservatism), was vastly different to Black and Brown youth in major cities across the United States. Black and Brown people were marginalized on grounds of race, which was exacerbated by police brutality, neighborhoods flooded with drugs (Love, 2016) and weapons, horizontal violence (see Fanon, 2001) …

Comparative Civilizations Review
The Middle and Late Roman Republic (264 BCE - 27 BCE) and the Han Dynasty (202 BCE - 220 CE) characterized two concurrent military superpowers of the ancient world. Anchoring opposite ends of the Eurasian continent, the two powers shared structural similarities that enabled their longevity and resilience to ruination.

Revisioning The Shawnee Prophet: Revitalization Movements, Religious Studies, And The Ontological Turn, Douglas L. Winiarski
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Historians invariably frame the early life of Laloeshiga, more commonly known as Tenskwatawa, the Shawnee Prophet, as one of unmitigated chaos and disorder. He emerges in scholarly literature as a ne'er-do-well: failed hunter and warrior, adulterer and wife beater, penurious healer, and dissolute alcoholic. A near-death experience during the winter of 1805 triggered visions that led to his rapid rise to religious authority in the revitalization movement he led with his brother, the famed Shawnee leader Tecumseh. Newly discovered sources and systematic review of older ones reveal a vastly different origin story. None of the supposed facts of the Prophet's …

Standardization Of Risk Classifications For Unmanned Space Vehicle Missions, Collin A. Gwaltney
Theses and Dissertations
This paper seeks to model risk classification levels (A-D) for 122 Space Vehicle programs. Models include multinomial logistic regression as well as random forest, a machine learning technique based on decision trees. We use independent variables (IVs) which are theoretically correlated to risk class for the regression and one random forest model. We then include all IVs and allow the random forest technique to use those which provide the most information on risk class before paring down the number of IVs to only 7. We show that the accuracy of predictions increases from 62% to 87% by using random forest …
Apotheosis Of The State And The Decline Of Civilization: A Systems Approach, Robert Bedeski
Apotheosis Of The State And The Decline Of Civilization: A Systems Approach, Robert Bedeski
Comparative Civilizations Review
Humanity is undergoing a second Axial Age. The first, as described by Karl Jaspers, brought transcendence into the vision and self-understanding of humans and the world. The rise of secularism and “Death of God” is dissolving and fragmenting that transcendence — a vital subsystem of the civilization system. Economy, knowledge and government comprise three additional subsystems and have coalesced to form the modern sovereign state, diminishing the traditional place of religion, art and philosophy in civilizations. An example of a state lacking common institutions of transcendence was the Mongol empire. Ruling Russia for a quarter millennium, its state form was …
