An Exploration Of The Feasibility Of Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy As A Neurofeedback Cueing System For The Mitigation Of The Vigilance Decrement, Gabriella Hancock
An Exploration Of The Feasibility Of Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy As A Neurofeedback Cueing System For The Mitigation Of The Vigilance Decrement, Gabriella Hancock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vigilance is the capacity for observers to maintain attention over extended periods of time, and has most often been operationalized as the ability to detect rare and critical signals (Davies & Parasuraman, 1982; Parasuraman, 1979; Warm, 1984). Humans, however, have natural physical and cognitive limitations that preclude successful long-term vigilance performance and consequently, without some means of assistance, failures in operator vigilance are likely to occur. Such a decline in monitoring performance over time has been a robust finding in vigilance experiments for decades and has been called the vigilance decrement function (Davies & Parasuraman, 1982; Mackworth, 1948). One of …
Determinants Of Terrorist Target Selection: A Quantitative Analysis, Taylor Haywood
Determinants Of Terrorist Target Selection: A Quantitative Analysis, Taylor Haywood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Existing research on the subject of terrorism is vast, spanning causes of terrorism, the membership of terrorist groups, types of terrorist attacks, and more. One area of terrorism research, though, has received only limited consideration: terrorist target selection. What research does exist explains target selection almost exclusively as a function of ideology (Asal et al. 2009, 270 and 274; Drake 1998b, 54-56 and 58). However, such a limited causal focus obscures other possible, and probable, explanations of terrorist target selection. This paper proposes an alternative explanation of terrorist target selection that includes ideological and terrorist group capability variables, as well …
Gis Analysis Of Obsidian Artifacts Distribution At Holtun From The Preclassic Through The Classic Periods., Melvin Guzman Piedrasanta
Gis Analysis Of Obsidian Artifacts Distribution At Holtun From The Preclassic Through The Classic Periods., Melvin Guzman Piedrasanta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The nature of social organization at an archaeological site can be interpreted from many types of material remains. Exotic goods are particularly useful for making inferences about social organization because of their scarcity, utilitarian demand, and symbolic characteristics. Obsidian artifacts are some of the most abundant exotic goods among the Lowland Maya. The acquisition of these artifacts was the result of a wide net of commerce from the highlands of Guatemala and central Mexico into the Maya lowlands. The patterns of consumption and distribution of obsidian artifacts vary according the time and location. This variation is seen as the result …
Buried Swords: The Shifting Interpretive Ground Of A Beloved Book Of Mormon Narrative, J. David Pulsipher
Buried Swords: The Shifting Interpretive Ground Of A Beloved Book Of Mormon Narrative, J. David Pulsipher
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
In November 2014 Latter-day Saint children around the world participated in a ritual that would probably seem odd to outsiders-they buried some swords. These weren't actual weapons, of course, only sketches of swords upon which the children were instructed to "write a wrong choice... such as 'fighting with my brother' or 'telling a lie.'" They then "buried" these swords by "crumpling their papers or throwing them away." Similarly, in February 2010 a small group of teenagers stood with their own paper swords around a freshly dug hole on their church's property. "I had my class write down a behavior of …
A Dialogue On Disaster: Antichrists In Jewish And Christian Apocalypses And Their Medieval Recensions, Natalie E. Latteri
A Dialogue On Disaster: Antichrists In Jewish And Christian Apocalypses And Their Medieval Recensions, Natalie E. Latteri
Quidditas
This paper examines textual and iconographic representations of antichrist personae in medieval Christian and Jewish manuscripts. Through a common language of polemics, Christians and Jews conflated antichrist personae to represent a more generalized category of apocalyptic antagonist that reflected the most significant temptations and threats to each respective religious community. As will be argued here, the greatest temptation and threat for Christians and Jews alike were those posed by members of the other religious group
Milton And The Middle Ages: Poetic Analogues And Visual Representations Of The War In Heaven, Expulsion Of The Rebel Angels, And Michael And The Dragon, Steven Hrdlicka
Milton And The Middle Ages: Poetic Analogues And Visual Representations Of The War In Heaven, Expulsion Of The Rebel Angels, And Michael And The Dragon, Steven Hrdlicka
Quidditas
Milton is not typically connected to the Middle Ages as much as to the later Enlightenment and the Romantic periods. Yet many distinctively medieval ideas can be seen in Paradise Lost, especially in the scenes that are related to the War in Heaven. Milton’s account of the war displays a medieval understanding of history in terms of typology in the drama of salvation. Particular details about the war itself such as St. Michael and Lucifer’s sword fight, Jesus’ eventual ending of the war, and the human characteristics of the fallen angels all have clear parallels in longstanding Christian poetic and …
Saint Or Politician: A Gendered Analysis Of Catherine Benincasa’S Letters, Jacob Hailperin-Lausch
Saint Or Politician: A Gendered Analysis Of Catherine Benincasa’S Letters, Jacob Hailperin-Lausch
Senior Independent Study Theses
Over the nearly seven hundred years since Catherine Benincasa’s death there has been a flow of almost continuous scholarly and spiritual work that has been written about her. Catherine is one of the few well documented women, of her historical period, in history. However, there is a large gap in the historiography of Catherine, and that is looking at the effect of her letters on her audience and possible implications of her letters on the political and spiritual landscape of her time and beyond. An important piece of looking at Catherine’s spiritual and political career is using a feminist or …
Smart Grid Security Against Massive Blackouts, Jun Yan
Smart Grid Security Against Massive Blackouts, Jun Yan
Open Access Dissertations
The security of the smart grid is a grand challenge across cyber and physical domains. As an emerging critical infrastructure that integrates information and communication technologies (ICT) into power and energy systems (PES) with improved efficiency, reliability, and sustainability, the smart grid encompasses a transcontinental network of interdependent and interoperating cyber-physical systems (CPS) through the computerization, interconnection, and communication of systems and devices. Across the closely interwoven cyber-physical spaces, the vulnerability and exposure of critical systems and processes have been on the rise: malicious attackers may penetrate through access points in the cyberspace and exploit vulnerabilities in the physical systems, …

Hitler’S “Utopia”: An Analysis Of Gleichschaltung In The Third Reich, 1933-1939, Emma Lichtenberg
The Expositor: A Journal of Undergraduate Research in the Humanities
Since its establishment by Otto von Bismarck in 1871, Germany has been home to a number of fundamentally disparate governments. In just seventy-four years, the unified German kingdom was reduced to rubble after a series of political failures. While this nation’s history has many high points, the lower moments tend to define Germany throughout the modern era. Without an examination of these moments, however, we are doing a disservice to historical study and analysis, which is why this essay examines the seven-year period between 1933 and 1939. Viewing these formative years through a modern lens tints the period with a …
An Alternative Approach To The Design Of Multiple Beam Constrained Lens Antennas, Rasi̇me Uyguroğlu, Abdullah Yücel Öztoprak
An Alternative Approach To The Design Of Multiple Beam Constrained Lens Antennas, Rasi̇me Uyguroğlu, Abdullah Yücel Öztoprak
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Rotman lenses are constrained lenses that are used as beam-forming networks to feed array antennas. Their design is based on three focal points, producing three beams with perfect phase fronts. This paper introduces an alternative constrained lens, which has phase equality at five radiating array elements for each beam position. In addition, the center point of the feed curve produces a perfect beam at broadside. The performance of this lens is analyzed and compared to the conventional Rotman lens. The analysis demonstrates that the new lens has better phase performance for wide angle designs. Our study shows that the phase …
The Power Of The Periphery: Aid, Mutuality And Cold War U.S-Ghana Relations, 1957-1966, Moses Allor Awinsong
The Power Of The Periphery: Aid, Mutuality And Cold War U.S-Ghana Relations, 1957-1966, Moses Allor Awinsong
Masters Theses
This project interrogates how economic self interest motivated periphery states such as Ghana to use foreign policy as a vehicle to attract improved development assistance from superpowers, in this case the United States. While the United States viewed its aid program in Ghana in stringently Cold War terms, Kwame Nkrumah and his advisors were less inclined to get deeply concerned about Cold War ideology. This project shows that Ghanaian agency was manifested in the Cold War through the new state's construction of a foreign policy image that made it a prominent African voice globally. It then examines how that image …

Conscripting Billy Yank And Johnny Reb : The Plight And Consequence Of Conscription Dodgers, Disruptors, And Resisters, Victoria Bryant Stewart
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the struggles between states and the federal governments over the proper method to satisfy the military service needs of the nation during the American Civil War, while assessing the violence that resulted from these policies. Historians have failed to address the transformation of the militia system and the introduction of conscription as a process. The United States of America and Confederate States of America created a federally controlled military system, which instituted compulsory service through federally controlled systems. Resistance continued despite changes within these systems. Resistance arose from defiance to these systems because of the inequity, for …
The Foundations Of Modern Democracy : Machiavelli And The Pursuit Of Greatness, Katherine Paton
The Foundations Of Modern Democracy : Machiavelli And The Pursuit Of Greatness, Katherine Paton
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, I focus on the role of the people in Machiavelli's political thought. Throughout the Discourses, Machiavelli advocates for an increased political role for the people, and the extension of citizenship to the lower classes. The ancient city found greatness by empowering the plebs against the nobles, until the balance of the humors was disrupted as the plebs took on an increasing amount of political power. In modernity, Rome has succumbed to corruption, as human nature is inherently self-interested and the city is no longer able to inculcate any sort of virtue. As a solution, Machiavelli envisions a …

The Treadmill Of Destruction In Comparative Perspective: A Panel Study Of Military Spending And Carbon Emissions, 1961-2014, Alex Stoner, John H. Bradford
Journal Articles
This article analyzes a unique panel data set to assess the effect of militarism on per capita carbon dioxide emissions. We extend previous research examining the effects of military expenditures on carbon emissions by including in our analyses over 30 years of additional data. In addition, we compare our preliminary results to those obtained from other estimation procedures. Specifically, we report and visually illustrate the results of 54 cross-sectional models (one for each year) and 36 unique panel regression models on both balanced and unbalanced panels. We assess how this relationship has changed over time by testing for interactions between …
A Qualitative Phenomenological Study Which Examines The Relationship Between Positive Educational Outcomes Of American Indian Women Serving In The Pow Wow Princess Role, Casey Fox
Theses and Dissertations
The negative statistics pertaining to American Indian women education should cause concern for everyone. The data reflect that American Indian women graduate high school behind all other demographic categories. In contrast, all participants of this study graduated high school and ascended to various levels of higher education. This paradox lends itself to further investigation despite opposing views of some scholars who believe there is nothing more to add. This research explored the existence of a correlation between culture and education for American Indian women who served in the pow wow princess role. Members of the American Indian women were called-upon …

Distribution And Habitat Use Of The Golden Crab Chaceon Fenneri Off Eastern Florida Based On In Situ Submersible And Rov Observations And Potential For Impacts To Deep Water Coral/Sponge Habitat, John K. Reed, Stephanie Farrington, Charles Messing, Andrew David
Gulf and Caribbean Research
This study documents the distribution and habitat preferences of the golden crab, a commercially fished species, in relation to deep-sea coral/sponge ecosystems (DSCEs) at 200-900 m depths off eastern Florida. A total of 386 h of videotapes from 94 submersible and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives from 1999 to 2009, covering a total distance of 376 km, were reviewed and characterized for habitat type and presence of crabs. The DSCEs surveyed included Lophelia coral mounds, Miami Terrace, Pourtalès Terrace, and Tortugas Valleys. Video transect data also included environmental surveys of proposed deep-water routes for Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) pipelines, LNG …

The Influence Of Historical Processes Of Haiti And Japan On The Effects Of The Earthquakes, Shoko Nakamura
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Looking at the societies of Haiti and Japan after the earthquakes, the effects of the disasters to each society are not the same. This research paper discusses that the effects of a disaster on society are the result of social conditions. Utilizing the theories of world-system perspective and risk society, this paper tries to understand how historical process contributes to contemporary social structure and how a holistic approach is important to the discussion of different experiences of the earthquakes in Haiti and Japan. As a method, comparative historical method is utilized with the focus of within-case method, and major sources …
Remote Sensing Of World War Ii Era Unexploded Bombs Using Object-Based Image Analysis And Multi-Temporal Datasets: A Case Study Of The Fort Myers Bombing And Gunnery Range, Bryan Byholm
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
During World War II, United States Army and Navy pilots trained on several hundred bombing ranges encompassing more than 12 million acres of land, leaving behind crater-scarred landscapes across the country. Post-war estimates suggest that 10-15% of aerial bombs used failed to detonate as intended, so these areas today are contaminated by a large number of dangerous unexploded bombs (UXB) which remain under the surface. Until recently, detecting UXB has been a tedious and expensive process done in three stages: (1) identifying and mapping general areas of concentrated bomb craters using historical air photos and records; (2) intensely searching these …

Blurred Intersections: The Anti-Black, Islamophobic Dimensions Of Cve Surveillance, Zeinab A. Dahir
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Modern mechanisms of state surveillance reinforce gendered, raced, classed and sexed power hierarchies. Forms of control and regulation of "problem bodies" are framed as neutral or benign forms of bureaucratic bookkeeping (Dubrofsky and Magnet, 2015). This thesis explores the possible Islamophobic and Anti-Black dimensions of Counter Violent Extremism (CVE) program, a counterterrorism community outreach program initiated by the federal government in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, which targets the Somali community. I will be evaluating whether CVE programs, initiated by state agencies, transform into a site of surveillance. This thesis will examine declassified state documents from sources such as Homeland Security …

An Exploratory Study On The Improvement Of The Army Rapid Acquisition Process, Jason F. Tate
An Exploratory Study On The Improvement Of The Army Rapid Acquisition Process, Jason F. Tate
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since 2001, the Army has spent billions of dollars to develop, test, and procure equipment through the Army Rapid Acquisition Process (ARAP), a process at times used in place of the traditional Army Acquisition Process (AAP) when immediacy and customization are a priority. The ARAP was implemented to increase efficiency in delivering adequate equipment to soldiers. The ARAP has been criticized in the literature for its lack of efficiency and effectiveness in the field. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to examine ARAP deficiencies through the lens of a broad cross-section of Army acquisition functional area professionals. …

Metaphor And Ideology In Economic Discourse, Brian Derhen
Metaphor And Ideology In Economic Discourse, Brian Derhen
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Despite the presence of metaphors in American political discourse, little scholarly attention has been paid to the functioning of economic metaphors. This study addresses this shortcoming by examining the use of economic metaphors in contentious argument, while paying attention to how metaphor's linguistic variability derives from the rhetorical nature of discourse, and how the context of conflicting ideologies facilitates clashes between larger political metaphors. After establishing the ubiquity of metaphor in economic policy discourse, this study elaborates on an understanding of a fractured political discourse with an historical model that traces this fracture back to four dominant ideological positions. Finally, …

Cognitive Biases And Reflexive Control, Natalie Minton
Cognitive Biases And Reflexive Control, Natalie Minton
Honors Theses
Manipulating an opponent is nothing new to warfare, but what is new is the understanding behind modern tactics, psychology, and the how the two intertwine under real world circumstances. One modern tactic, particularly used by the Russian government, is called reflexive control. This hybrid warfare tactic is used to manipulate an opponent into unknowingly making decisions benefiting the manipulator while harming the opponent. Though executed through many outlets, reflexive control is aimed at flaws within the opponent's decision making process. Many such flaws are categorized as cognitive biases derived from mental shortcuts that can lead the brain to misjudge information. …

The Reinvented Romance: A Study Of Manuscript Bnf French 60, Natalie Keller
Honors Theses
This thesis examines a fourteenth century manuscript of the Roman d'Enéas, currently held at the Bibliothèque nationale in France, for significant textual changes against the other surviving manuscripts. Careful study of the manuscript exposed considerable modifications to characterization and genre. Examination of the textual changes present in the manuscript, BnF 60, revealed an amplification of female figures and subtle developments of romance elements. In BnF 60 most changes occur in the exposition and the revised ending. The writer of this version appears to draw from copies of both the Roman d'Enéas and Virgil's Aeneid. It demonstrates the inconsistencies present in …
Evaluating The Success Of Russian Hybrid Warfare In Ukraine, Gage Adam
Evaluating The Success Of Russian Hybrid Warfare In Ukraine, Gage Adam
Honors Theses
This thesis investigates Russia's use of hybrid warfare in Ukraine, and whether the endeavor was successful. In order for Russian hybrid warfare to have been successful, the costs and repercussions of their actions must not outweigh their achieved goals. For this thesis, it was assumed that Russia's goals are: locking NATO and the EU out of Russia's remaining sphere of influence, demonstrating Russian solidarity, gaining territory, and boosting popularity for the current administration. Russia was able to achieve all of these goals with the annexation of Crimea and use of military force in the Donbass region. The costs of these …
