Combat-Related Reproductive Trauma: Implications For Quality Of Life And The Reproductive Narrative, Laura S. Covington
Combat-Related Reproductive Trauma: Implications For Quality Of Life And The Reproductive Narrative, Laura S. Covington
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
Little research exists on the experiences of a combat-related injury that impairs fertility. This dissertation is a qualitative exploration of the lived experiences of military members after a genitourinary (GU) injury. It addresses the biological, psychological, and social impact on quality of life during recovery and subsequent attitudes about family development and sexual functioning. Building on both the life course perspective and the reproductive story model, this dissertation reviews literature on military culture, GU injury, and infertility to give a context to further analyze the essences of the phenomenon (Elder & Giele, 2009; Jaffe & Diamond, 2011).

Wars For Empire: Apaches, The United States, And The Southwest Borderlands, Warren Metcalf
Wars For Empire: Apaches, The United States, And The Southwest Borderlands, Warren Metcalf
Civil War Book Review
Wars for Empire employs the framework of settler colonialism to argue that war and violence in the American Southwest unfolded as expressions of culture and convention. For the Apache people, existing in numerous bands dispersed over a wide area from western Arizona, New Mexico, Sonora, Chihuahua, to West Texas, raiding and warfare met the needs of subsistence and provided a mechanism to obtain power and status in competition with other borderland peoples. For the United States, the war functioned as an expression of white, Anglo-Saxon dominance far out of proportion to the benefits accruing from the conquest of this remote, …

Kindly Welcome: A Novel Of The Shakers In The Civil War, Randal Allred
Civil War Book Review
Linda Stevens has written a finely crafted novel which makes the reader feel kindly welcome, indeed. She renders the story with compassion and empathy in a way that gives us a clear view into the interior of a people and the impact of a world-changing event. Her focus on a specific historical Shaker community (in which many of the characters are also historical) is the product of a good deal of research, and this rigor enriches the text of the novel. She even supplies a map of the town of South Union, Kentucky, one of a number of Shaker communities …

Women At The Helm: Rewriting Maritime History Through Female Pirate Identity And Agency, Wendy Vencel
Women At The Helm: Rewriting Maritime History Through Female Pirate Identity And Agency, Wendy Vencel
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The subject of Atlantic-based Golden Age (1650-1720) piracy has long been an area of historical and mythical fascination. The sea has historically been a realm outside the reaches of mainland society, where women could express any aspect of their personal identity. Women at the Helm: Rewriting Maritime History through Female Pirate Identity and Agency queers the history of Golden Age piracy while placing the colonial period’s seafaring women within a longer historical tradition of female maritime crime and power.
Notable female pirates of this era, including Ireland’s Grace O’Malley and the Caribbean’s Anne Bonny and Mary Read, through the act …

A Look Into Union And Confederate Cavalry: A Comparative Study Of The Michigan Cavalry Brigade And Ector’S Brigade, James Middleditch
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This comparative study explores the use of cavalry by the Union armed forces and Confederate armed forces during the American Civil War. This study examines the Michigan Cavalry Brigade and Ector’s Brigade of dismounted cavalry. The examination took a look at factors including weapons and equipment, leadership, tactics and strategy, casualties, and campaign performances. This study argues that, the Michigan Cavalry Brigade was able to demonstrate the Union’s superiority over the Confederacy when compared to Ector’s Brigade. Results of the comparative study showed that the Michigan Cavalry Brigade was able to display the Union’s dominance by acquiring small arms that …

Livable For All Ages: Evaluating Perceptions Of Community In An Intergenerational Context, David L. Ferrell
Livable For All Ages: Evaluating Perceptions Of Community In An Intergenerational Context, David L. Ferrell
Theses and Dissertations--Social Work
Aging-friendliness work uses a model of eight core domains to assess and achieve communities in which people are more equipped to age well, and remain in their community as they age. These domains are broken into the built environment (i.e., Housing, Transportation) and the social environment (i.e., Communication, Social Inclusion, Employment). This dissertation is centered on the efforts to make communities more aging-friendly, and focuses specifically on the Livable Lexington initiative. This dissertation utilized an exploratory study of a pre- and posttest evaluative design to pilot intergenerational discussion groups as a potential intervention. Intergenerational discussion groups were developed with the …

"Ye Are No More Strangers And Foreigners": Theological And Economic Perspectives On The Lds Church And Immigration, Walker A. Wright
BYU Studies
While always a heated topic, immigration has once again taken center stage in political discourse across multiple countries in recent years. The controversial debate surrounding the Syrian refugee crisis was especially critical to the 2016 United States presidential election. In response to the crisis, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced its “I Was a Stranger” relief effort, encouraging members—and the women in particular—to seek out and assist refugees in their local communities. With this contentious political climate in mind, this paper will review the Church’s “I Was a Stranger” initiative as well as its position on immigration. …

The 'Devès Affair' In Saint-Louis-Du-Senegal: A Critical Assessment Of The Sources, 1902-1911, Kalala J. Ngalamulume
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article examines the validity and reliability of the testimonies and sworn depositions that the Peuvergne administration produced in July 1910 as evidence justifying Justin Devès’s suspension and removal from office as mayor of Saint-Louis, capital of French Senegal. The main argument here is that the “Devès Affair” was based on spurious charges. The article places the conflictin the broader context of the political and economic competition between the French colonial administration and the Bordeaux firms, on the one hand, and the Devès network, on the other.
Two Directions Toward Ethical Peoplehood, Jonathan R. Cohen
Two Directions Toward Ethical Peoplehood, Jonathan R. Cohen
UF Law Faculty Publications
From the biblical era through the present day, the conception of Israel as a people devoted to ethical ends has been a core Jewish value. But how is such a model to be implemented? This essay suggests two basic ways of thinking about ethical peoplehood, namely, that one can begin with a people and try to transform it into an ethical people ("from tribe to ethics") or that one can begin with ethical norms and through those norms attempt to build a people ("from ethics to tribe"). Part I of this essay begins by sketching these two modalities in Jewish …
The Effects Of Cultural Participation On Health Outcomes Among American Indian/Alaska Native Elders, Collette Adamsen
The Effects Of Cultural Participation On Health Outcomes Among American Indian/Alaska Native Elders, Collette Adamsen
Theses and Dissertations
American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) history represents a number of traumatic events inflicted upon each tribal generation that has yet to recover. These events have led to major consequences on the health of this population. AI/AN people experience the worst health disparities in the nation (Espey et al., 2014; Warne & Lajimodiere, 2015). Previous studies have shown that loss of land, cultural devastation, and inadequate health care access are associated with the high rates of health disparities endured by AI/AN people throughout North America (Walters, et al., 2011). AI/AN beliefs tell us that culture serves a fundamental role in managing good …
Tactical Implementation Of Strategic Guidance During The American Revolutionary War: Pedagogical Application For Classroom Use, Ryan Menath
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Air Force Academy is a specialized institution of higher learning dedicated to producing military officers in the U.S. Air Force. Specialized graduation requirements, like a required Military History course, present the opportunity for the implementation of unique pedagogical methodologies. Further, as a technologically forward-looking branch of service designed to control air, space, and cyberspace in a contested environment, the Air Force places a premium on twenty- and twenty-first century military history. Unfortunately, pre-airpower American military history gets overshadowed compared to later conflicts to the point where cadets attending the Air Force Academy get relatively little exposure to …

Security, Law & Public Policy - Assessing The Efficacy Of A National Security Vs. Law Enforcement Model To Combat Terrorism, Marvin L. Astrada
St. Thomas Law Review
The relationship between security, law, and public policy, generally speaking, is one fraught with tension. This is the case, in part, because security has the potential for limitless application. During the campaign and since taking office, candidate (and later President) Trump clearly espoused an emphasis on security in order to "Make America Great Again." Securitization measures from a political, economic, sociocultural, and foreign policy perspective were key pillars of President Trump's campaign and have informed Executive policy-making since Trump assumed office. In the present highly contentious political environment, wherein the Executive has vigorously articulated and pursued an expansive sociopolitical and …

SK1 is an intracellular enzyme whose lipid kinase activity regulates the levels of bioactive lipids that are involved in normal homeostasis and disease. SK1 activity is implicated in various diseases including cancer, and inhibition of SK1 activity is a potential treatment for its implicated pathogenesis. However, without a high-throughput SK1 activity assay, screening and identification of SK1 inhibitors is a rigorous process that requires significant time and resources to yield potent lead compounds. In order to develop a high-throughput SK1 assay method, an optically active non-lipid SK1 substrate was designed for the purpose of monitoring activity in real-time. Evaluation of …

Identifying Pathways To Smoking And Alcohol Consumption After A Natural Disaster: Findings From Hurricane Katrina, Adam Alexander
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Survivors of disasters often experience severe psychological symptoms and disorders, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and report using psychoactive substances, such as alcohol, marijuana, and cigarettes. This dissertation examined whether depression severity and PTSD were pathways to postdisaster smoking and alcohol consumption using a representative cohort of adult cigarette smokers from Memphis, Tennessee and New Orleans, Louisiana nine and eighteen months after Hurricane Katrina (N=2004). Results from path analyses showed that disaster exposure increased depression and posttraumatic stress nine months after Hurricane Katrina, and the effect persisted across time for depression. Disaster exposure also increased the risk for …

We consider two functions f1(r) and f2(r), for r 2 Rn and the problem of ‘Diffusing’ these functions together, followed by the application of an encryption process we call ‘Stochastic Diffusion’ and then hiding the output of this process in to one or other of the same functions. The coupling of these two processes (i.e., data diffusion and stochastic diffusion) is considered using a form of conditioning that generates a wellposed and data consistent inverse solution for the purpose of decrypting the output. After presenting the basic encryption method and (encrypted) information hiding model, coupled with a mathematical analysis (within …

The Library In The Mountains And The Writing On The Wall : Fragmented Memories And Cultural Amnesia In Ursula K. Le Guin, Erin Michelle Roll
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Memory, especially its loss, plays a prominent role in the work of Ursula K. Le Guin (b. 1929). The Telling (2000) and Voices (2006), two of Le Guin’s most recent works, go into great detail on what happens when a memory is lost or destroyed, usually under duress. The former, the last book in Le Guin’s Hainish cycle, deals with a goal to preserve books and learning from a regime that has made it a misguided goal to eradicate all elements of past culture in an effort to modernize the country. In the latter, part of Le Guin’s Annals of …

When This You See, Remember Me: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial And World War I Monuments, Alyssa M. Mertka
Oswald Research and Creativity Competition
As the world approaches the 100th anniversary of the “War to End All Wars,” the mind can’t help but turn to the dozens of conflicts that followed the Armistice on November 11, 1918. Instead of ushering in an age of prosperity and peace, World War I thrust the globe into a maelstrom of instability that led to a second world war within two decades. Each successive conflict was a reminder of WWI’s failure to end global warfare while simultaneously creating a new generation of disillusioned citizens—both soldier and civilian. No conflict illustrates this disillusionment better than Vietnam, America’s equivalent …

Answering Democracy's Call : U.S. Citizen Enlistees In The First World War Canadian Expeditionary Force, June A. Mastan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study explores the close relationship between Britain, the United States, and Canada at the beginning of the twentieth-century. The true closeness of this relationship becomes more evident throughout the First World War when issues of citizenship between the three nations assumed a substantial level of fluidity. Analyzing the motivations that compelled almost 36,000 U.S. citizens to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War provides a window through which we can view this relationship. Some citizens of the United States sought to join the war effort through military service, even though their country was a …

"Remarks On A March" : A Female Perspective On Gender, Rank, And Imperial Identities During The French And Indian War, Erica Ingrid Nuckles
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation expands and complicates the study of women who accompanied and contributed to the British army in the French and Indian War (1754-1763), while also exploring the ways in which the war affected gender, rank, and imperial identities within the army and, more broadly, the British colonies in North America. This is done through the lens of Charlotte Browne, a British middling widow and mother who served as matron of the British army’s General Hospital for the entirety of the war. Browne kept a journal for much of her service that traces her journey with the army from London …
Expanding Our Vision : An Empirical Examination Of Security Sector Reform, Andrew Vitek
Expanding Our Vision : An Empirical Examination Of Security Sector Reform, Andrew Vitek
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation contributes empirical analysis on the dynamics of security sector reform and aims to establish an understanding of the interplay between civilian governments, security forces and international actors in attempts to reform the security sectors of transitioning or reconstructing states. The need for reform programs aimed at boosting civilian control over state security forces has gained increased attention following the end of the Cold War, especially for states during regime transitions or post-conflict reconstruction. The record of success for these programs however remains inconsistent, and empirical scholarship aimed at the process at the time of writing is problematically sparse.

"True Principles Of Liberty And Natural Right" : The Vermont State Constitution And The American Revolution, Kevin R. Ingraham
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The Vermont state constitution was the most revolutionary and democratic plan of government established in America during the late eighteenth century. It abolished adult slavery, eliminated property qualifications for holding office, and established universal male suffrage. It invested broad power in a unicameral legislature, through which citizens might directly express their will through their elected representatives. It created a weak executive with limited power to veto legislation. It mandated annual elections for all state offices, by which the people might frequently accept, or reject, their leaders. It thus established a participatory democracy in which ordinary citizens enjoyed broad access to …

This study examines the efficacy of archaeological interpretation of ethnicity within the confines of nineteenth-century material culture available from the New York State Museum’s archaeology collection and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation Cultural Resource Information System. The goals of this evaluation are to discuss the limits of archaeological interpretation of ethnicity, the utility of material indications of racism in the archaeological record, and the archaeological footprint of immigrant groups by considering the economic development history of New York State. This study focuses on the canals and railroads of New York State as a mechanism …

The Torment Of Exile And The Aesthetics Of Nostalgia : Transnational Chinese Neo-Romanticism In Xu Xu’S Post-War Fiction, Frederik H. Green
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
Physical exile certainly was a painful reality for Xu Xu. Restorative nostalgia might to some extent have informed his literary activity in those years. However, nostalgia in Xu Xu’s postwar fiction, I will argue in this paper, constitutes above all the expression of a quest for a purely aesthetic utopia that had already begun to take shape in his pre-war oeuvre and that came to full fruition in his post-war fiction. By analyzing a number of Xu Xu’s novellas from Hong Kong, such as Bird Talk, The Other Shore 彼岸 (1951), and The All-Souls Tree 百靈樹 (1954), I will show …
