A Panorama Of Parks: Deep Nature, Depopulation, And The Cadence Of Conserving Nature, Emily Wakild Jan 2018

A Panorama Of Parks: Deep Nature, Depopulation, And The Cadence Of Conserving Nature, Emily Wakild

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

During the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Latin American countries set aside nature for conservation in thousands of parks and reserves. Today, such designations cover more than one-fifth of Latin America’s territory (see map 11.1). Parks range from Costa Rica’s tiny coastal Manuel Antonio National Park, consisting of a mere sixteen square kilometers, to those as large as Brazil’s Tumucumaque National Park, at nearly fifteen thousand square kilometers, a size larger than Belgium. Conservation areas famously include some of the region’s and even the world’s largest tropical forests, but also its driest deserts, highest mountain ranges, biggest waterfalls, deepest marine …

In the years approaching World War I's centennial, many scholars have published books reexamining different aspects of the conflict, as well as attempting to update prominent scholarship from years past. These include books focusing on individual battles, such as Verdun, to the importance of the Zimmerman telegram in spurring American desire to join the war effort. One topic of interest that appeals to a more general audience would be that of spy and sabotage activity during the conflict. The topic of spy and sabotage activity might interest a curious reader, but the matter concerning its importance during the war is …

Chaotic Based Self-Synchronization For Rf Steganography Radar/Communication Waveform, Michael A. Gonnella Jan 2018

Chaotic Based Self-Synchronization For Rf Steganography Radar/Communication Waveform, Michael A. Gonnella

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In this project, we continue previous CSR project entitled RF Steganography based Joint Radar/Communication Waveform Design to develop a bio-inspired secure low probability detection (LPD) radio frequency (RF) waveform that can serve multiple purposes simultaneously. Previously, we have developed an RF steganography based RF waveform to conceal a secure digital communication within a linear frequency modulated (LFM) chirp radar signal. By exploiting novel reduced phase shift keying modulation and variable symbol duration, the new waveform is resistant to time domain analysis, frequency domain analysis and cyclostationary analysis. However, to demodulate the hidden communication message, the intended receiver has to know …

Catching Chances: The Movement To Be On The Ground And Research Ready Before An Outbreak, David Brett-Major, James V. Lawler Jan 2018

Catching Chances: The Movement To Be On The Ground And Research Ready Before An Outbreak, David Brett-Major, James V. Lawler

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

After more than 28,000 Ebola virus disease cases and at least 11,000 deaths in West Africa during the 2014⁻2016 epidemic, the world remains without a licensed vaccine or therapeutic broadly available and demonstrated to alleviate suffering. This deficiency has been felt acutely in the two, short, following years with two Ebola virus outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and a Marburg virus outbreak in Uganda. Despite billions of U.S. dollars invested in developing medical countermeasures for filoviruses in the antecedent decades, resulting in an array of preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic products, none are available on commercial shelves. This …

Escaping The Logic Of Anarchy: A New Model Of Collective Security, Bryan H. Druzin Jan 2018

Escaping The Logic Of Anarchy: A New Model Of Collective Security, Bryan H. Druzin

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Past attempts to create collective security, such as the League of Nations and the United Nations, have failed. This article argues that this is because the anarchic structure of the international system does not permit a top-down approach to the problem. It is argued that the solution is to create a collective security model that is bottom-up rather than top-down.

This article proposes a model of collective security that uses positive feedback generated by network effects to trigger the bottom-up emergence of a global collective security organization. Driven by fear and self-interest, weak states join this fledgling organization, increasing its …

Globalisation And The Muslim Ummah: Issues, Challenges, And The Ways Out, Rashid Ating Jan 2018

Globalisation And The Muslim Ummah: Issues, Challenges, And The Ways Out, Rashid Ating

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Globalisation is a phenomenon and a process that is aspiring to transform the entire world into a single political and economic system through the rapid movement of goods and people across the planet in the most rapid speed ever witnessed in the history of mankind. This paper is a theoretical and conceptual research which investigates the dilemmas of the Muslim ummah in the era of globalisation. The problem is the way the global forces are threatening to obliterate all cultures and civilisations in favour for non-conforming Western political and economic arrangements. The research uses a qualitative method of data collection …

The First Florida Cavalry (Us): Union Enlistment In The Civil War's Southern Periphery, Tyler Campbell Jan 2018

The First Florida Cavalry (Us): Union Enlistment In The Civil War's Southern Periphery, Tyler Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1863, along the southern periphery of the American Civil War, a Union Brigadier General began recruiting Southern white men into a Union cavalry regiment known as the First Florida Cavalry (US). This study investigates the regiment and those who enlisted in it to show the fluidity of Southern loyalty during the Civil War and the conditions of the Deep South Homefront that existed on the periphery of Union occupation and continue to exist on the periphery of Civil War historiography. While scholars have recently addressed many aspects of Southern dissent in the Civil War, significantly less attention has been …

To The Memory Of Brave Men: The Imperial War Graves Commission And India's Missing Soldiers Of The First World War, Roger Sims Jan 2018

To The Memory Of Brave Men: The Imperial War Graves Commission And India's Missing Soldiers Of The First World War, Roger Sims

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the commemoration of Indian soldiers who died during the First World War by the Imperial War Graves Commission, Britain's official government body overseeing all imperial commemoration efforts. For the soldiers of the Indian Army their war experience was split between the Western Front in Europe and Mesopotamia in modern-day Iraq. They were also far more ethnically, religiously, and lingually diverse than their British and Dominion counterparts. In order to examine how geography, religion, and the imperial relationship affected Britain's commemoration of India's war dead, this study uses the Commission's own records to recreate how the IWGC created …

Saving Students: European Student Relief In The Aftermath Of World War I, Benjamin L. Hartley Jan 2018

Saving Students: European Student Relief In The Aftermath Of World War I, Benjamin L. Hartley

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The World’s Student Christian Federation established the European Student Relief (ESR) organization in 1920 in order to respond to the refugee and hunger crises emerging in the wake of World War I in Europe. Although nearly forgotten today, it was the first truly international ecumenical relief agency in the world. This article tells the story of ESR in reference to its efforts at building interorganizational coalitions and as a force for “internationalism.” The ESR’s story is instructive as the world marks the hundredth anniversary of the end of World War I and is once again confronted with refugee crises.

How Do You Like Your Regulation - Hard Or Soft: The Antarctic Treaty And The Outer Space Treaty Compared, Steven Freeland, Anja Nakarada Pecujilic

National Law School of India Review

The end of World War II simultaneously turned into the beginning of a new global conflict- the Cold War. The manifestations of the conflict between its two main proponents, the United States of America ('USA') and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics ('USSR'), were propelled by the possibilities offered by modern technology (nuclear weapons, missile technology, computers, and satellites), and included interventions, proxy wars, and the struggle for natural resources. However, periods of confrontation and crises were succeeded by more stable periods of negotiation, coexistence, and competition. Two ,non-territorial' areas, Antarctica and Outer Space, which came into focus during the …

Development Of A High Performance Liquid Chromatography Method For The Analysis Of Next-Generation Cyanide Antidote, 3-Mercaptopyruvate, In Plasma, Elaf Alzhrani Jan 2018

Development Of A High Performance Liquid Chromatography Method For The Analysis Of Next-Generation Cyanide Antidote, 3-Mercaptopyruvate, In Plasma, Elaf Alzhrani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although the current FDA approved cyanide antidotes (i.e., sodium nitrite, sodium thiosulfate, and hydoxocoboalamine) are effective for treating cyanide poisoning, each individual antidote has major limitations, including large effective dosage, delayed onset of action, or dependence on enzymes generally confined to specific organs. To overcome these current limitations, next-generation cyanide antidotes are being investigated, including 3-mercaptopyruvate (3-MP). Analytical methods capable of detecting 3-MP from plasma are essential for the development of 3-MP as a nextgeneration cyanide antidote. Although 3-MP has been analyzed by LC-MS-MS, this instrument is not widely available. Therefore, a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with fluorescence …

The Future Of Freedom Of Expression Online, Evelyn Aswad Jan 2018

The Future Of Freedom Of Expression Online, Evelyn Aswad

Faculty Articles

Should social media companies ban Holocaust denial from their platforms? What about conspiracy theorists that spew hate? Does good corporate citizenship mean platforms should remove offensive speech or tolerate it? The content moderation rules that companies develop to govern speech on their platforms will have significant implications for the future of freedom of expression. Given that the prospects for compelling platforms to respect users’ free speech rights are bleak within the U.S. system, what can be done to protect this important right? In June 2018, the United Nations’ top expert for freedom of expression called on companies to align their …

Intentional Cultural Destruction In Armed Conflicts, Zorana Knezevic Jan 2018

Intentional Cultural Destruction In Armed Conflicts, Zorana Knezevic

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The intentional destruction of cultural sites during warfare provokes the question of why would armed actors invest significant resources into carrying out this activity, and what impact does it have in an anned conflict? This thesis identifies four main motivation types of intentional cultural destruction and how they may contribute to intensifYing a conflict. It hypothesizes that as intentional cultural destruction events increase in an armed conflict, so does the occurrence of battles, intensifYing conflict. To test its hypothesis, it utilizes the case studies of Syria and Yemen, conducting a S T A TA regression test for both. The Syrian …

Prosecuting The War On Terror In The Trump Administration: The Trump Doctrine: Is There Really A New Sheriff In Town, Jeffrey F. Addicott Jan 2018

Prosecuting The War On Terror In The Trump Administration: The Trump Doctrine: Is There Really A New Sheriff In Town, Jeffrey F. Addicott

Faculty Articles

After one full year in office, it is time to examine the actions taken by the Trump Administration in light of its legal and policy structures for dealing with the War on Terror and the companion problem of radical Islamic terrorism-both the domestic and international threat. In this context, two general concepts bear examination. First, is there a significant change in the Trump Administration from the policies of the Bush and Obama Administrations vis a vis prosecuting the War on Terror and dealing with domestic jihadists? Second, has the Trump strategic vision and attendant actions contributed in any significant way …

Sanctuary And The Cold War: The Us Versus The Sanctuary Movement In Texas And Arizona 1981-1986, Stefon Andrews Jan 2018

Sanctuary And The Cold War: The Us Versus The Sanctuary Movement In Texas And Arizona 1981-1986, Stefon Andrews

History Theses and Dissertations

In the 1980s, the Reagan Administration launched a campaign against the American Solidarity and sanctuary movements, which were highly critical of US support for right-wing dictatorships in Central America. The US sought to discredit these movements by branding their members criminals. The government used many different tactics, some legitimate and others illegal. None were successful, however, and the government was ultimately forced to leave the movements alone.

This thesis examines three different hotspots in the Reagan Administration’s war against these groups. It examines the different tactics employed and analyzes their effectiveness. It also explains why the government was unsuccessful in …

How Anthropogenic Climate Change Exacerbates Vulnerability In Prison Communities; A Critical Environmental Justice Analysis, John L. Veit Jan 2018

How Anthropogenic Climate Change Exacerbates Vulnerability In Prison Communities; A Critical Environmental Justice Analysis, John L. Veit

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis examines the link between anthropogenic climate change and mass incarceration by examining how governments address conditions in and around prisons resulting from hurricanes and wildfires. Critical Environmental Justice, Treadmill of Production and Destruction theories are synthesized using what is debuted here as an intersectional camera based on the theory of intersectionality. It examines how Trump administration policies will greatly exacerbate dangers caused by climate change and increase risks and dangers caused by mass incarceration. In addition to being a call to action, this project is intended to serve as a resource for prisoner rights activists. Prisons have become …

Williams

BYU Studies

In the United States, we automatically think of England as the great maritime nation on whose overseas possessions the sun never set. We also identify Spain as a great maritime power, whose American colonies, especially Mexico and Peru, produced immense wealth for the kingdom. However, we forget, or more likely never knew (because we were never taught), that it was Portugal that invented the ship and developed the maritime technology that allowed for the first open-sea travel during the European Age of Exploration, begun by Portugal in 1415 (fig. 1). It was Portugal that discovered more than two-thirds of the …
