Rethinking Colonization: A Case Study Of The North American Martyrs And The Middle Ground, Andrew Stranahan
Rethinking Colonization: A Case Study Of The North American Martyrs And The Middle Ground, Andrew Stranahan
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
For thousands of years, Native Americans lived in North America, including the Great Lakes region. In this specific area, they would create their own unique customs, traditions, and ways of living. In addition, they would experience times of great turbulence, as violence, slavery, and torture all existed in this region. In this midst of this complex sociopolitical world, the French entered. They colonized this area and called it New France. They called the Great Lakes area, the pays d’en haut. Both the French and the Native Americans living in New France and the pays d’en haut learned to accommodate and …
Understanding The Alt-Right Brand Through A Comparative Look At Internal Vs. External Rhetoric, Samuel Norton
Understanding The Alt-Right Brand Through A Comparative Look At Internal Vs. External Rhetoric, Samuel Norton
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This project examines the communications of the alt-Right, a relatively new white supremacist social movement in the US. The popularity of the alt-Right can be attributed to not only changing social conditions leading to rising instability but also rhetorically astute uses of new media. The alt-Right has been able to define its brand as an anti-political correctness coalition, and to communicate that brand identity to the public. When the brand identity eventually fell apart, so too did the movement.ut.

More Than Love: Eugenics And The Future Of Loving V. Virginia, Osagie K. Obasogie
More Than Love: Eugenics And The Future Of Loving V. Virginia, Osagie K. Obasogie
Fordham Law Review
This Symposium is dedicated to celebrating how Loving v. Virginia paved the way for greater acceptance of multiracial families and interracial intimacy. Loving is largely understood as a case that rejected the bigotry and hatred experienced by interracial couples and affirmed the idea that law supports love across racial lines. With this narrative comes the popular understanding that Loving stands for the notion that love conquers all. This idea has shaped other legal strategies and social movements, such as the effort to have same-sex marriage legally recognized. Thus, Loving is thought of as drawing attention to the importance of romantic …

The Battlefield Of Tomorrow, Today: Can A Cyberattack Ever Rise To An “Act Of War?”, Christopher M. Sanders
The Battlefield Of Tomorrow, Today: Can A Cyberattack Ever Rise To An “Act Of War?”, Christopher M. Sanders
Utah Law Review
In a sense, war has not changed. The end results will always remain the same: death and destruction; even if that destruction is not fully tangible. The results may be instantaneous, or they may be delayed. It is only the means implemented to achieve these destructive ends that evolve. Cyberwarfare is a product of that evolution. Most importantly, we must always remain abreast of evolution and the changes in warfare in order to effectively and efficiently respond to new attacks, and to prevent them as well.
This Note sheds light on recent evolution in warfare. It enlightens the reader of …
The Implementation Of A Cybersecurity Testbed For Education And Research, Elisabeth Dubois
The Implementation Of A Cybersecurity Testbed For Education And Research, Elisabeth Dubois
Business/Business Administration
The Cyber Innovation Lab brings with it the understanding and collection of the threats, vulnerabilities, and risks that one’s IT resources present. Due to the increasing complexity and degree of cyber threats, innovation regarding current attack vectors and defense mechanisms are needed. The lack of realistic threat landscapes and the need for accurate security analysis and defense strategies prompted the implementation of a cyber physical system for defensive research. The project depicts the processes to establish the testbed, the methodology used in classifying the architecture, threat and attack analysis, as well as preliminary results. The paper presents the testbed architecture …
Healthcare Services For The Displaced: A Comparative Study Between Internally And Externally Displaced Populations In The Duhok Governorate Of Iraq, Shannon Moquin
Public Administration & Policy
Although forced displacement is not a new problem, the topic has gained increasing attention due to the Syrian refugee crisis. This paper serves to explore the legal, contextual and practical differences between internally and externally displaced populations. The correlation between legal displacement status and access to healthcare is explored. Information was gathered from surveys of displaced individuals residing in urban areas of the Duhok region of Iraq, as well as comparing the amount of services provided to displacement camps in the region. It is found that there is a statistically significant difference in health services accessed by internally displaced and …

Congolese Refugee Students In Higher Education: Equity And Opportunity, Refik Sadiković
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore Congolese refugee students’ experiences in higher education in the United States. In order to understand the challenges Congolese students face in higher education, this study used narrative inquiry methodology to investigate Congolese students’ lived experiences that affected their educational endeavors before and after resettlement to the United States. The study examined personal stories of 10 Congolese students in the Pacific Northwest using semi-structured in-depth interviews, one-on-one follow-up interviews, field notes and two focus group interviews. Using narrative analysis five reoccurring themes were identified and discussed in the findings. The study findings indicate …
It Wasn't Built In A Day: Reconsidering The Roman Dictatorship In Livy, Charlotte I. Crabtree
It Wasn't Built In A Day: Reconsidering The Roman Dictatorship In Livy, Charlotte I. Crabtree
University Honors Theses
During the Roman Republic, a dictator usually acted as a temporary military commander with supreme authority. When the crisis was over, the dictator resigned, as his term was tightly restricted to six-months. The dictatorship was a reliable emergency response for centuries (501- 201 BCE). It appeared regularly from the first decade of the Republic through the Second Punic War. Although the job description sounds straightforward, no single fact about the Roman dictatorship is easily definable. Traditional arguments about the dictatorship have focused on famous military dictators and their tactical actions in battle. This has limited our discussion of the dictatorship, …
The Politics Of Ethics, Laurie L. Levenson
The Politics Of Ethics, Laurie L. Levenson
Mercer Law Review
Prosecutors hate being told what to do. As "ministers of justice," they feel imbued with a moral compass that rarely, if ever, needs tweaking by outsiders. Their mission to protect society and the Constitution provides sufficient guidance. Being told how to be "ethical" is downright insulting for attorneys who already perceive themselves as wearing the white hat. Efforts to create ethical standards to guide a prosecutor's work may be perceived as little more than an unnecessary intrusion upon the prosecutor's independence and personal sense of justice. For some prosecutors, it is unwarranted meddling into the prosecution's business. As former Attorney …
Security Is Local: An Analysis Of The Use Of Community-Based Security Forces During Counterinsurgency Operations, Alexander Stephenson
Security Is Local: An Analysis Of The Use Of Community-Based Security Forces During Counterinsurgency Operations, Alexander Stephenson
Dissertations
Counterinsurgency (COIN) operations are the most common type of military operation conducted by the United States and other Western powers. In most cases, conventional forces intervening in an insurgency are limited in personnel and turn to local community-based security forces to mitigate this shortcoming after initial attempts fail to defeat an insurgency with the conventional forces available. While the use of community-based security forces is a common element of COIN operations, little research has been conducted to determine the factors that contribute to their successful employment. A synthesis of existing COIN and community-based policing theory provides a model to evaluate …

The Postmodern Indian: Representation And The Films Of Sherman Alexie, Tara P. Mccrink Burcham
Dissertations
For hundreds of years, Native Americans have been characters in American media. For most of those years, whites determined the way in which Native Americans were represented. First in print, radio, silent movies and later talkies and television, representations of Native Americans have included being uneducated sidekicks, savages, noble savages seeking to steal white women, drunken idiots, or hilarious jesters all for the entertainment of viewers. This troublesome history of negative depictions of Native Americans is the reason this research is directed at the films by Native American writer and filmmaker Sherman Alexie. This research is a qualitative analysis of …

Pynchon And Place: A Geocritical Reading Of Thomas Pynchon, John Stout
Pynchon And Place: A Geocritical Reading Of Thomas Pynchon, John Stout
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A special emphasis on artificial or constructed spaces appears throughout Thomas Pynchon’s body of work. This thesis explores how Pynchon describes such spaces and their uses to address such weighty topics as social inequity and the struggle against authoritarianism. In examining the role of sheltering spaces in novels such as V. and Gravity’s Rainbow, I argue that Pynchon depicts various “outsider” characters as finding reification of their own forms of alterity within spaces either designed or co-opted with such purpose in mind. Through Pynchon’s depiction of spatial transformation in novels like Vineland and Inherent Vice, the author finds the opportunity …
Social Organization And Environmental Patterning At Tel Abu Shusha: An Integrated Spatial Approach To Survey Archaeology, Seth Price
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tel Abu Shusha, located in the Jezreel Valley of Palestine, is a large-scale archaeological site possibly identified as the cities of Biblical Gaba or Roman Gaba Hippaeon/Gaba Philippi. Surface archaeological survey of the surrounding area, conducted by the Jezreel Valley Regional Project during 2017, revealed extensive assemblages of visible settlement features dating primarily to middle and late Islamic periods. This research seeks to answer questions of settlement decision-making and societal organization, by integrating archaeological, textual, environmental, and geospatial data sources. In addition to visual interpretation, Kolmogorov-Smirnov nonparametric tests are used to gain insight on environmental settlement preferences; Ripley’s K analysis …

Characterizing The Virulence Factor Yape In Yersinia Pestis., Tiva Templeton Vancleave
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Yersinia pestis is the causative agent of bubonic plague and is primarily transmitted by fleas. Upon infection, the bacteria rapidly travel to the regional lymph nodes causing inflammation and cellulitis in these tissues (referred to as buboes). Two outer membrane proteins, YapE and Pla, have been implicated to have roles in dissemination to the lymph nodes. Their adhesive properties have shown that they are able to interact with host macrophages thereby increasing their ability to disseminate to regional lymph nodes. More recently, we have shown that YapE is cleaved by another virulence factor important for lymph node colonization, Pla, to …

The issue also considers counterterrorism operations in Iraq and the growing importance of gray zone conflict.
The British Colonization Of Australia: An Exposé Of The Models, Impacts And Pertinent Questions, Peter Genger
The British Colonization Of Australia: An Exposé Of The Models, Impacts And Pertinent Questions, Peter Genger
Peace and Conflict Studies
By adopting the purview of Peace and Conflict Studies and the expository approach of historical archaeology of colonialism, this paper succeeds in enumerating the models the British used to establish and perpetuate colonial violence on the Indigenous Australians, and the traumatizing impacts the violence is exerting on them. The sole essence of the paper is not only to re-establish that the British colonization of Australia was deliberate, just as the heinous models they used. Most essentially, the paper identifies the following institutions: Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS), the UN and challenges them to move from their current inert condemnation of …
Electric Light: Automating The Carceral State During The Quantification Of Everything, R. Joshua Scannell
Electric Light: Automating The Carceral State During The Quantification Of Everything, R. Joshua Scannell
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation traces the rise of digitally-driven policing technologies in order to make sense of how prevailing logics of governance are transformed by ubiquitous computing technology. Beginning in the early 1990s, police departments and theorists began to rely on increasingly detailed sets of metrics to evaluate performance. The adoption of digital technology to streamline quantitative evaluation coincided with a steep decline in measured crime that served as a proof-of-concept for the effectivity of digital police surveillance and analytics systems. During the turbulent first two decades of the 21st century, such digital technologies were increasingly associated with reform projects designed …
Process Evaluation Of Terrorism Amnesty And Reintegration Program, And Perceptions Of The Program Within Kenya Police, Resila Onyango
Process Evaluation Of Terrorism Amnesty And Reintegration Program, And Perceptions Of The Program Within Kenya Police, Resila Onyango
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
There are a few articles on front line officials as implementers of Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) measures, a gap the dissertation has partly filled by exploring the Terrorism Amnesty and Reintegration Program (ARP) in Kenya using both qualitative and quantitative data. ARP developments have occurred in a political context wherein foreign government have been eager to advance CVE and the Kenyan Government has more-or-less gone along with that. The implication here is whether such policies will be effective and sustainable in Kenya. Importantly, if we view Kenya in a regional and even global context, it is now something of a …
Race And Gun Violence In The United States: A Case Study Of Policy Reform In Missouri, Morgan C. Williams Jr
Race And Gun Violence In The United States: A Case Study Of Policy Reform In Missouri, Morgan C. Williams Jr
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Gun violence remains an important contributor to racial differences in mortality within the United States. Despite the existence of these significant racial disparities in firearm homicide victimization, the relationship between gun control policy and racial disparities in homicide remains largely unexplored within the empirical crime literature. Previous research suggests that access to secondary firearm markets serves as a salient contributor to local gun violence with the regulation of private firearm sales falling exclusively within state-level jurisdiction. The role of state-level background check requirements for private firearm sales in reducing gun violence remains controversial in both the empirical literature and gun …
The Unsuspected Francis Lieber, Richard Salomon
The Unsuspected Francis Lieber, Richard Salomon
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
"The Unsuspected Francis Lieber" examines paradoxes in the life and work of Francis Lieber. Lieber is best known as the author of the 1863 "Lieber Code," the War Department's General Order No. 100. It was the first modern statement of the law of armed conflict. This paper questions whether the Lieber Code was truly humanitarian, especially in view of its valorization of military necessity. Also reviewed is the contrast between the Code's extraordinarily favorable treatment of African-Americans and Lieber's personal history of slave-holding.
Lieber's shift from civil libertarian to authoritarian after 1857, as exemplified by his support of Lincoln's suspension …
Progressive Commemoration: Public Statues Of Historical Women In Urban American Cities, Melanie D. Chin
Progressive Commemoration: Public Statues Of Historical Women In Urban American Cities, Melanie D. Chin
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Women who made notable accomplishments are underrepresented in commemoration. Some American cities have brought women to the forefront of becoming visible through commemoration in statues. This thesis compares the commemoration of historical women in four different American cities. Stakeholders hold the key to implementing and changing public policy to increase the visibility of women and people of color in public monuments. Cities which lack representation of women and people of color may learn from and follow the efforts of a leading city to achieve lasting and effective change in representing those who historically been underrepresented.
Capital Growth: Precision Agriculture And Vertical Farming In The Corporate Food Regime, Justin Taylor
Capital Growth: Precision Agriculture And Vertical Farming In The Corporate Food Regime, Justin Taylor
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Agriculture in the 21st century has entered a digital age. New technologies emphasize GPS, big data, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, automation, sensors, and robotics, contributing to two modes of modern food production known as precision agriculture and vertical farming. Through an interdisciplinary review of scientific and social scientific scholarship, this paper examines the ways in which these two technologies interact with the global corporate food regime and explores their impact in core, peripheral, and semi-peripheral countries. It also engages in a discourse analysis of promotional materials and interview statements from precision agriculture and vertical farming firms to expose …
Shadows Of Empire: The Mughal And British Colonial Heritage Of Lahore, Naeem U. Din
Shadows Of Empire: The Mughal And British Colonial Heritage Of Lahore, Naeem U. Din
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Pakistani city of Lahore is the capital of the Punjab province. The city itself has existed for over a thousand years. In 1947 the British rule in the Indian subcontinent ended, resulting in the partition of British India into the modern states of India and Pakistan. At the time the Punjab province was also partitioned, with the western half (including Lahore) going to Pakistan and the eastern half being awarded to India. Prior to partition, Lahore served as an important administrative and commercial center under the Mughal Empire (1526–1799), the Sikh Empire (1799–1849), the British East India Company (1849–1858), …
Affecting Civil War: The Poetics Of Fear In Lucan’S Bellum Civile, Irene R. Morrison-Moncure
Affecting Civil War: The Poetics Of Fear In Lucan’S Bellum Civile, Irene R. Morrison-Moncure
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation argues for the importance of fear in the Bellum Civile, Lucan’s Neronian epic narrating the civil war between Caesar and Pompey (49 – 48 BCE). Previous scholars have acknowledged the centrality of fear in Lucan’s poetic program, having related it to the Aristotelian theory of pity and fear (catharsis) and to the use of affective rhetorical devices in historiographic writing. However, there has been no extended analysis on the programmatic role of fear in Lucan’s historical epic. I examine therefore how Lucan represents fear in its multifaceted forms and analyze how the representation of these forms complicates Lucan’s …
Dolls Who Speak: Sex Robots, Cyborgs And The Image Of Woman, Victoria E. Pihl Sorensen
Dolls Who Speak: Sex Robots, Cyborgs And The Image Of Woman, Victoria E. Pihl Sorensen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis examines the emerging phenomenon of sex robots from a feminist materialist perspective. I explore the current scholarly and popular debates on sex robots, and suggest a reading of sex robots in their machinic, literary and cinematic expressions to move beyond the moral-ethical impasse that seems to dominate sex robot discussions. Employing Donna Haraway’s “Cyborg Myth” on a methodological and theoretical level, I argue for an interdisciplinary approach to studying sex robots, which proceeds carefully so as to avoid contributing to sex panic, and which thinks critically about what it might mean to assess sex robots from a feminist …
