Endowed With Manly Courage: Medieval Perceptions Of Women In Combat, Katherine Rose Hager
Endowed With Manly Courage: Medieval Perceptions Of Women In Combat, Katherine Rose Hager
All Theses
In the Middle Ages, a certain subset of women occupied a liminal space between the masculine and feminine spheres. These were the women who participated in armed combat and who were the enactors of aggression as opposed to the passive recipients of violence. There is debate today regarding whether medieval women lacked the capability, means, and training to engage in bellicose endeavors. Meanwhile, other scholars see in the male-voiced records of fighting women disdain for the female warriors. This study argues, first, that women did have the capacity in the Middle Ages to engage in combat and, second, that the …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
With increased levels of autonomy in most of the engineering fields and booms in areas such as swarms, platoons and Internet of Things (IoT), communication and information flow has become a highly researched field. With advancements in autonomous vehicles (AVs) and drones in armed warfare, more and more focus is being laid on intercommunication between these vehicles and its surroundings as well as intra-communication among the fleets/swarms itself. It is easier to deal with individual agents whereas it is quite challenging to deal with multi-agent systems especially with highly dynamic agents. In this thesis, we propose a general protocol for …

Comparing News Coverage Of Richard Nixon And Donald Trump In Their First Hundred Days, Chanel Sassoon
Comparing News Coverage Of Richard Nixon And Donald Trump In Their First Hundred Days, Chanel Sassoon
2018 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
News values have remained the same since the inception of journalism; however, the ways we consume news and write stories have changed with the times. Print media, which used to be the main avenue of receiving news, has since been replaced with digital formats. Tumultuous times bring an influx of news stories, especially when they involve politics. Two of the most controversial presidents, Richard Nixon and Donald Trump, were the subjects of many news stories during their times in office. To further understand the way political news coverage has changed over the years, the author studied articles published within the …

Sallie Brooke Capps: Education Trailblazer In North Texas, Joshua Vincent Chanin
History Theses - Archive
This thesis closely examines the life of Sallie Brooke Capps (1864-1946), a liberal-feminist progressive reformer who passionately advocated for better academic opportunities for young white women and children in North Texas during the first-half of the twentieth century. At a time when women seldom held leadership positions and instead trained to lead lives as domestic household managers, Capps found a way to combine both. Moreover, her support for the education profession opened the door for many young women who came after her to attend college and become successful teachers and administrators. As the vice-president of the Texas Congress of Mothers …
A Relational Dialectics Approach To The Identity Development Of Millennial Mothers, Shawna L. Merrill
A Relational Dialectics Approach To The Identity Development Of Millennial Mothers, Shawna L. Merrill
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This thesis uses relational dialectics theory (RDT) to make sense of the experiences of millennial mothers. RDT is a heuristic theory of relational meaning making and asserts that relationships and identities are negotiated in states of competing and contradictory discourses. This thesis can be conceptualized as two projects: autoethnography and qualitative inquiry using semi-structured interviews. Autoethnography explores the researcher’s own experience with the topic. Interview participants were asked a series of questions about their lives as millennial mothers to identify competing discourses, management strategies, and implications for identity. Three primary tensions were identified of millennial vs. mother, authenticity vs. persona, …
Marine Corps Cultural Similarities To Native Americans, Anthony Hines
Marine Corps Cultural Similarities To Native Americans, Anthony Hines
Spectrum
According to the 4-field approach to anthropology, a people can be defined by its archaeology, culture, biology and linguistics (Hicks, 2013). Native Americans and Marines have striking similarities as a people when using this approach, especially in cultural and linguistic analysis.
Exporting America: The U.S. Information Centers And German Reconstruction, James Podesva
Exporting America: The U.S. Information Centers And German Reconstruction, James Podesva
Dissertations
This dissertation examines the establishment of United States Information Centers in West Germany immediately after the Second World War, and their role in securing the support of West German elites for American occupation policies, particularly democratic self-government. Located at the intersection of culture, economics, and American politics, the America Houses (Amerikahäuser) educated curious Germans about the United States, presenting a carefully curated vision of American life that minimized conflict and highlighted the material and cultural prosperity enjoyed by the mythical “average American.” The Americans contended that with the adoption of democracy and a reformed market economy, affluence was something West …
Employment Discrimination And The Domino Effect, Laura T. Kessler
Employment Discrimination And The Domino Effect, Laura T. Kessler
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
Employment discrimination is a multidimensional problem. In many instances, some combination of employer bias, the organization of work, and employees’ responses to these conditions, leads to worker inequality. Title VII does not sufficiently account for these dynamics in two significant respects. First, Title VII’s major proof structures divide employment discrimination into discrete categories, for example, disparate treatment, disparate impact, and sexual harassment. This compartmentalization does not account for the fact that protected employees often concurrently experience more than one form of discriminatory exclusion. The various types of exclusion often add up to significant inequalities, even though seemingly insignificant when considered …
Kissingerism And Iranian-American Relations: Prospects For Reconciliation And The Establishment Of A New Order, Kaleb D. Mazurek
Kissingerism And Iranian-American Relations: Prospects For Reconciliation And The Establishment Of A New Order, Kaleb D. Mazurek
International Studies Honors Projects
This thesis is an attempt to resurrect the strategic and philosophical thinking of Henry Kissinger in order to unlock the Iranian-American impasse. Encounters between the two countries have been in a state of deadlock since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, though its genesis dates back, at least, to the American-sponsored coup d’état of 1953. Within the American foreign policy establishment, no one looms larger than Dr. Kissinger: his contributions intersect the two worlds of academic diplomatic history and statecraft at the highest levels of international relations. He was the chief diplomat at a momentous period. Kissinger―through his writings and public policy―emphasizes …

The site of Midnight Terror Cave is located in the karstic Roaring Creek Valley near the village of Springfield in the Cayo District of Belize. The site was discovered in 2006 and fieldwork was conducted by the Western Belize Regional Cave Survey Project and California State University, Los Angeles, between 2008 and 2010. This dissertation focuses on the osteological analysis of the bones of 118 individuals recovered and recorded at the site. The osteological, contextual, and demographic evidence is framed within ritual and costly signaling theory of structural violence and viewed with the ethnohistoric and ethnographic literature of the ancient …
The Labor Between Farm And Table: Cultivating An Urban Political Ecology Of Agrifood For The 21st Century, Amy K. Coplen
The Labor Between Farm And Table: Cultivating An Urban Political Ecology Of Agrifood For The 21st Century, Amy K. Coplen
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
The variegated landscape of food production and consumption reveals a great deal about socionatural relations and processes of urbanization and globalization under capitalism. Food production has changed dramatically over time, shifting away (but never fully divorced) from the rural agrarian landscape to spaces that are characterized as industrial and/or urban. Workers transform nature at each stage in the food production process, not only on farms but also in processing plants, grocery stores, restaurants, and other spaces. This paper draws on urban political ecology (UPE) to position labor as central to understanding the socioecological relations embodied in food systems. It puts …

The Destruction Of Cultural Heritage In The Yemen Conflict: Legal Implications And State Responsibility, Benjamin Passey
The Destruction Of Cultural Heritage In The Yemen Conflict: Legal Implications And State Responsibility, Benjamin Passey
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
Since 2015, a violent war has waged in Yemen between rebel forces and a Saudi Arabian led coalition. This conflict has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties, an unparalleled humanitarian crisis, and the flagrant disregard and violation of international humanitarian law. A silent victim of the conflict is Yemen's millennia-old cultural heritage. Dozens of ancient monuments, historical buildings, and museums have been systematically targeted and destroyed by the coalition in unprecedented acts of cultural warfare. This paper examines the culpability of the Saudi led coalition in committing war crimes, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the …
Preemptive War, War Powers, And International Complications: A Need For Reform, Paige Montague
Preemptive War, War Powers, And International Complications: A Need For Reform, Paige Montague
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
In March 2003, the United States declared official war on Iraq out of fear that Suddam Hussein has nuclear weapons. This war was declared after the United Nations Security Council ruled that the Preemptive War was illegal. Preemptive War is a strange loophole under the War Powers Act and gives the President ability to declare war under the potential of a future threat. The Iraq War did not yield the intended results nor were any nuclear weapons found. Had congress been mandated under an amendment to approve the Preemptive War, the poor consequences both on a domestic and international level …

"A Daingerous Liberty": Mohawk-Dutch Relations And The Colonial Gunpowder Trade, 1534-1665, Shaun Sayres
Master's Theses and Capstones
This thesis examines seventeenth-century Mohawk-Dutch relations through the lens of the colonial gunpowder trade. Looking through the eyes of cultural brokers such as Arent van Curler or Saggodryochta, it argues the Dutch colonies of New Netherland and Rensselaerswijck and the Mohawk Nation of the Haudenosaunee formed a symbiotic relationship that significantly altered the geopolitical landscape of eastern North America in the seventeenth century. As time wore on, and neighboring European colonies and Indian nations grew stronger, the Mohawks and Dutch grew increasingly dependent on one another for survival. These Mohawk-Dutch encounters and negotiations, dictated by the need for gunpowder and …
The Effects Of Prescribed Fire On Overstory Tree Quality And Stand Volume In Eastern Deciduous Forests, Shannon P. Stanis
The Effects Of Prescribed Fire On Overstory Tree Quality And Stand Volume In Eastern Deciduous Forests, Shannon P. Stanis
Open Access Theses
The use of prescribed fire for ecosystem restoration presents numerous questions for natural resource managers. One of these questions, the impact of prescribed fire on overstory tree quality and stand volume, is explored here prospectively and retrospectively. A long-term study is being installed in 20 oak-dominated stands across central and southern Indiana to monitor effects of repeated prescribed fire on overstory tree quality. Prior to the initial prescribed fire, 20 average quality and 10 highest quality trees in each stand were measured for grade and defects below breast height. Each prescribed burn is monitored with thermal paints and thermocouples at …
Political Order In The Modernizing Mormon Kingdom, 1887-1896, Mark Denninghoff
Political Order In The Modernizing Mormon Kingdom, 1887-1896, Mark Denninghoff
Open Access Dissertations
What was the function of political parties in colonizing the American West? How did the arrival of national party politics impact the public lives and lived religious experience of everyday Mormons? How did the Latter-day Saints disaggregate their hierarchal religious communities and re-aggregate them into party affiliations that pitted co-religionists against one another? Mormons had endured coerced adoption of secular public education, industrialization, a hostile military presence and legal battles threatening the existence of the church. The introduction of national political parties served as tipping point that precipitated the integration of this religiously constituted community into the American polity at …
Sex, Culture, And The Politics Of Fashion In Stuart England, Emilie M. Brinkman
Sex, Culture, And The Politics Of Fashion In Stuart England, Emilie M. Brinkman
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is the first full-length study to analyze the politicization of dress and material objects, exploring the manner in which fashion served as a site for political discourse and agency, during the seventeenth century, specifically from 1603–1702, an era characterized by profound political, religious, and social turmoil as well as increased international trade and luxury consumption. This dissertation demonstrates how fashion, which encompassed clothing, accessories, hairstyling, and cosmetics, was an important facet of political culture within Stuart England and, furthermore, was absolutely fundamental to how the English understood themselves, others, and the turbulent world they lived in. I argue …

Effect Of Cue Cardinality, Cue Representation And Judgment Options On Human Judgments, Harsh Wardhan Aggarwal
Open Access Dissertations
Judgment studies using different set of cues have been used from over 50 years to understand how people make judgments. Brunswik’s Lens Model, a regression model which combines the ecological and the human’s judgment model using a common set of cues, has been the primary tool of choice for these judgment studies. Yet, despite a common model, there is no consensus on how much information people need to make judgments, or how the information should be represented or even how the judgment options should be presented to people. Therefore, this study in the first phase, used a Monte Carlo simulation …
Interpersonal And Ideological Kindness: A Biocultural Approach, Sally Averitt-Hubbard
Interpersonal And Ideological Kindness: A Biocultural Approach, Sally Averitt-Hubbard
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In accordance with Richard Dawkins’ materialist “selfish gene” theory of human behavior, altruism is a subject matter that is treated conservatively by biologists, whose understanding of the human version of altruism tends toward mutualistic and sometimes reputation-based explanations of charity, kindness, and helping. Trivers (1971) first stated that non-kin altruism could evolve if altruistic behavior is balanced between partners over time, implicating a strictly mutualistic domain for kindness. But kindness herein is defined, beyond mere mutualism or reciprocity, as “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” Further, kindness tends to have an action-oriented dimension, as in Goetz et al.’s …

When The World Seemed New: Ue Local 301 And The Decline Of The American Labor Movement, Jacob Houser
History Honors Program
On February 19, 1954 Senator Joseph McCarthy made his return to Albany, New York to expunge any subversive elements within the defense industry, particularly at the Schenectady General Electric plant. McCarthy was willing to bring anyone down with him that he could. A man named Charles Rivers was called forth to testify on the first day of the hearings. Rivers did not know that he was being brought before Senator McCarthy as a suspected Communist, but McCarthy in turn did not know that Rivers did not even work for General Electric. Once he realized he had the wrong man, all …
A Call For Compliance And Continued Efforts To Insure The “Best Interest” Of Indian Children In South Dakota, Tamee Livermont
A Call For Compliance And Continued Efforts To Insure The “Best Interest” Of Indian Children In South Dakota, Tamee Livermont
Honors Thesis
The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) was implemented in 1978 to protect the best interest of American Indian children and families from the unwarranted removal of children from the homes and communities. 40 years post-ICWA, the state of South Dakota still struggles to insure proper and complete implementation of this law. This undergraduate thesis examines the history and current status of ICWA in South Dakota and the role of the South Dakota Department of Social Services in implementing ICWA and working with tribal nations. Finally, this thesis is a call for compliance by the state of South Dakota and continued …
Out Of The Woods: Facilitating Stewardship Of Historic Resources In The National Forest Service, Sydney Alexis Barrett Burns
Out Of The Woods: Facilitating Stewardship Of Historic Resources In The National Forest Service, Sydney Alexis Barrett Burns
All Theses
The United States Forest Service was established as a federal agency to oversee the nation’s timber production and protect its watersheds. With the acquisition of large tracts of public land came the acquisition of historic structures located on these lands. While the US Forest Service is focused on land management, it still has a duty to protect and properly manage all of the resources under its care, historic ones included. This thesis compares the different management structures of the US Forest Service with the National Parks Service, two federal agencies who own federal lands, one of which focuses on land …

"To Prevent Pernicious Political Activities" : The 1938 Kentucky Democratic Primary And The Hatch Act Of 1939., Raymond Michael Myers Iv
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
By 1938, popularity for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal had declined. The 1938 Kentucky Democratic primary, pitting Senate Majority Leader Alben Barkley against Governor A.B. “Happy” Chandler, became a referendum on the administration. During the campaign, each candidate accused their opponent of employing government resources to buy votes. This national scandal prompted Congress to enact the Hatch Act of 1939. Still in effect, this law restricted how federal employees interacted with political campaigns. This paper contends that the 1939 Hatch Act served as a constitutional backlash against the New Deal’s federal expansion and the rise of the administrative state. …
Remembering Agincourt: An Analysis Of King Henry V'S Impact On English National Identity, Nathan C. Harkey
Remembering Agincourt: An Analysis Of King Henry V'S Impact On English National Identity, Nathan C. Harkey
Tenor of Our Times
King Henry V is one of the best remembered monarchs in English History. Although he died at the untimely age of 36 after only nine years on the throne, his reign saw England's empire in France reach its highest point, an accomplishment that was actualized in the of the Battle of Agincourt. In the six centuries since, both Henry's reign as a whole and the battle itself have impacted the identity of the English nation in many ways. This paper analyzes the influence of these events on those who followed, ranging from the use of heraldry after the battle to …
