The Iraq War has been the costliest U.S. conflict since the Vietnam War. To date, few official studies have been conducted to review what happened, why it happened, and what lessons should be drawn. The U.S. Army in the Iraq War is the Army’s initial operational level analysis of this conflict, written in narrative format, with assessments and lessons embedded throughout the work. This study reviews the conflict from a Landpower perspective and includes the contributions of coalition allies, the U.S. Marine Corps, and special operations forces. In terms of human suffering, few military operations have rivaled sieges and comparably harsh legal regimes have governed them. At a time when legal vindication of humanitarian interests in armed conflict is ascendant, conventional accounts of the law of war governing humanitarian relief may seem out of step, plagued with glaring gaps in humanitarian logic. In 2016, Oxford University professors published a United Nations-commissioned legal study—the Oxford Guidance on the Law Relating to Humanitarian Relief Operations in Situations of Armed Conflict. The Guidance contends that during armed conflict international law prohibits belligerents from arbitrarily denying offers of humanitarian relief …

Art In The Trenches: Unofficial Art Of The First World War, Tim Clarke

Abstract: Scholarship in recent decades focusing on soldier experiences of the First World War have largely ignored soldier-produced artworks as access points into the experience of modern warfare. Though there has been work on official war artists and post-war artworks of soldiers turned artists, artwork produced during service in a non-official capacity has only featured in art history, where the artwork and artists feature as subjects, rather than as sources for understanding their experiences that contextualize their work. This paper makes a historiographical case for exploring this source-base, while also analyzing several selected works from unofficial First World War artists.

A pillar of African American literature, Richard Wright is one of the most celebrated and controversial authors in American history. His work championed intellectual freedom amid social and political chaos. Despite the popular and critical success of books such as Uncle Tom's Children (1938), Black Boy (1945), and Native Son (1941), Wright faced staunch criticism and even censorship throughout his career for the graphic sexuality, intense violence, and communist themes in his work. Yet, many political theorists have ignored his radical ideas.

Explaining the processes underlying the emergence of monument construction is a major theme in contemporary anthropological archaeology, and recent studies have employed spatially-explicit modeling to explain these patterns. Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile) is famous for its elaborate ritual architecture, particularly numerous monumental platforms (ahu) and statuary (moai). To date, however, we lack explicit modeling to explain spatial and temporal aspects of monument construction. It is well known that the water entry of a sphere causes cavity formation above a critical impact velocity as a function of the solid-liquid contact angle (Duez et al. 2007). Using a rough sphere with a contact angle of 120^◦, Aristoff & Bush (2009) showed that there are four different cavity shapes dependent on the Bond and Weber numbers (i.e., quasi-static, shallow, deep and surface). Landing a fixed-wing aircraft on a moving aircraft carrier is a risky and inefficient process. Having an accurate prediction of ship deck motion decreases the risk posed to both the pilot and the aircraft and increases the efficiency of landing maneuvers. The present work proposes the use of a sine-summation algorithm to predict future ship motion. The algorithm decomposes recorded ship acceleration data into its characteristic harmonic parameters using a fast Fourier transform. The harmonic parameters are then used in a summation of sine waves to create a fit for the acceleration data, which is projected into future time intervals …

Abstract : Sir Alfred Munnings painted the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and the Canadian Forestry Corps as part of the Canadian War Memorials Fund during the First World War. In the first half of 1918, Munnings, England’s most renowned equine artist, depicted the Canadians in sketches and on canvas, and he eventually produced over 40 works of art. This article will explore Munnings’s interactions with the Canadian cavalrymen and lumberjacks in uniform, while providing additional insight into his works of art that are held at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

Parameter Estimation Of Lfmcw Signals Based On Improved Sm Method, Jiang Li, Junni Zhou, Runling Yang, Liu Li

Abstract: The parameter estimation of linear frequency modulation continuous wave (LFMCW) signal is a research hotspot in electronic reconnaissance systems. In this paper, the time frequency distribution feature of LFMCW signals is studied first. Based on the improved S-method (SM), an algorithm for parameter estimation of LFMCW signals is proposed. It uses short-time Fourier transform (STFT) to calculate the SM with adaptive window width, which can suppress the crossterm interferences and improve the time-frequency resolution. Theoretical analysis and simulation experiment results demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm under low SNR.

Abstract: In order to improve the versatility of electronic warfare scene simulation and reduce the repeated development, a parametric modeling approach was proposed. Based on the visual simulation development model of Vega Prime, the modular simulation architecture was designed to provide a unified design structure for parametric modeling. The method of parameter extraction and description was researched to standardize the design of simulation model parameters. Parameter constraint rules were researched to associate model parameters, avoid the conflict between parameters, and simplify parameter instantiation. Abstract: The tracking of spatial target based on bearing-only measurements belongs to the nonlinear model of serious. Uncertain statistical characteristics of noise, which is caused by complex space environment, leads to reduced accuracy of traditional methods. The fuzzy square-root cubature Kalman filter was presented (FS-CKF) by introducing the thought of fuzzy in square-root cubature Kalman filter (SCKF). The algorithm which uses trapezoid subordinate function to describe noise gets rid of the limitations of traditional methods and broadens the range of SCKF. Abstract: Aiming at the shortcoming of model reuse and extensibility in the existing underwater warfare simulations, a hybrid modeling method based on improved hybrid DEVS (IHDEVS) is proposed. By analyzing the characteristics of combat in the underwater warfare, the event driven engagement process is constructed. Aiming at the existing problems of semantic interoperability of language description, the battle management language, web ontology language and extensible markup language are studied. The pursuit and sinking of the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941 constituted one of the largest fleet-versus-fleet operations in European waters during World War II. The British used forty-one surface ships, eight submarines, and fifty aircraft to hunt the Bismarck combat group. Detaching so many ships from convoy duty to take part in the pursuit represented a high but prudent risk by the Admiralty.
