What's Your Ministry Score? The Ministry Valuation Playbook, Lisa Kralina Mar 2019

What's Your Ministry Score? The Ministry Valuation Playbook, Lisa Kralina

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

Traditional missionary efforts consist of individuals following God’s leadership of going and teaching people in other lands. Such small-scale efforts are overwhelmed within rapidly changing world populations and amid ever-increasing analytical and technology advancements. This article investigates current practices and financial valuations of expatriates and international missionaries. By integrating business disciplines, evangelistic expatriates will be better positioned to reach biblical goals of discipleship. A modified model and implementation actions are suggested for churches and ministries sending missionaries.

Cyber Threats, Harsh Environment And The European High North (Ehn) In A Human Security And Multi-Level Regulatory Global Dimension: Which Framework Applicable To Critical Infrastructures Under “Exceptionally Critical Infrastructure Conditions” (Ecic)?, Sandra Cassotta, Roman Sidortsov, Christer Pursiainen, Michael Evan Goodsite Mar 2019

Cyber Threats, Harsh Environment And The European High North (Ehn) In A Human Security And Multi-Level Regulatory Global Dimension: Which Framework Applicable To Critical Infrastructures Under “Exceptionally Critical Infrastructure Conditions” (Ecic)?, Sandra Cassotta, Roman Sidortsov, Christer Pursiainen, Michael Evan Goodsite

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Business opportunities in the European High North (EHN) are accompanied by the danger of cyber-threats, especially to critical infrastructures which in these Arctic regions become “extra critical” because of the harsh environmental climatic conditions and remoteness of distances. Critical infrastructures (CI) in the EHN are crucial for numerous sectors, such as the energy sector which is completely depended on digitalization, internet and computers’ commands. Such a new condition of extra criticality should also include human security concerns to avoid human disasters. An effective legal framework under “exceptionally critically infrastructure conditions” (ECIC) for this technology is important not only in terms …

The Second Amendment Rights Of Young Adults, David B. Kopel, Joseph G.S. Greenlee Mar 2019

The Second Amendment Rights Of Young Adults, David B. Kopel, Joseph G.S. Greenlee

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This Article examines the Second Amendment rights of young adults, ages 18 to 20. It begins with what the Supreme Court has said about the Second Amendment rights of such persons. Parts II and III survey colonial and founding-era sources. These show that the typical age for mandatory militia duty was 16 or 18 years of age. Many other people, who were not in the active militia, were also required to keep arms at home. The colonial and early state statutes required possession not only of firearms, but also edged weapons, and tools for manufacturing ammunition, cleaning guns, and repairing …

Prosecuting In The Shadow Of The Jury, Anna Offit Mar 2019

Prosecuting In The Shadow Of The Jury, Anna Offit

Northwestern University Law Review

This Article offers an unprecedented empirical window into prosecutorial discretion, drawing on research between 2013 and 2017. The central finding is that jurors play a vital role in federal prosecutors’ decision-making, professional identities, and formulations of justice. This is because even the remote possibility of lay scrutiny creates an opening for prosecutors to make commonsense assessments of (1) the evidence in their cases, (2) the character of witnesses, defendants, and victims, and (3) their own moral and professional character as public servants. By facilitating explicit consideration of the fairness of their cases from a public vantage point, I argue that …

Framing Of Geoengineering Affects Support For Climate Change Mitigation, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Kaitlin Raimi, Alexander Maki, David Dana Mar 2019

Framing Of Geoengineering Affects Support For Climate Change Mitigation, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Kaitlin Raimi, Alexander Maki, David Dana

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The growing recognition that climate change mitigation alone will be inadequate has led scientists and policymakers to discuss climate geoengineering. An experiment with a US sample found, contrary to previous research, that reading about geoengineering did not reduce conservatives’ skepticism about the existence of anthropogenic climate change. Moreover, depending on how it is framed, geoengineering can reduce support for mitigation among both conservatives and nonconservatives. When geoengineering is framed as a major solution, people worry less about climate change, leading to reduced mitigation support. When framed as disastrous, people perceived geoengineering as riskier, also leading to a decrease in mitigation …

Unequal Enforcement Of The Law: Targeting Aggressors For Mass Atrocity Prosecutions, Nancy Amoury Combs Mar 2019

Unequal Enforcement Of The Law: Targeting Aggressors For Mass Atrocity Prosecutions, Nancy Amoury Combs

Faculty Publications

It is a central tenet of the laws of war that they apply equally to all parties to a conflict. For this reason, a party that illegally launches a war benefits from all the same rights as a party that must defend against the illegal aggression. Countless philosophers have shown that this so-called equal application doctrine is morally indefensible and that defenders should have more rights and fewer responsibilities than aggressors. The equal application doctrine retains the support of legal scholars, however, because they reasonably fear that applying different rules to different warring parties will substantially reduce overall compliance with …

Review: Calculus Of Violence, Cameron T. Sauers Feb 2019

Review: Calculus Of Violence, Cameron T. Sauers

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

It seems counterintuitive to imagine the bloodiest conflict in American history being worse, but Sheehan-Dean argues that the death toll could have been dramatically higher without both sides’ emphasis on restraint, as dictated by the laws of war. Most of the book is spent examining “how people on both sides justified the lethal violence of conflict and when, how, and why they balanced cruelty and destruction.” Despite the rules of war, however, Civil War participants, like all humans, were contradictory. Sometimes they acted instinctively and spontaneously, while at other times, their actions were the result of deeply seated ideology. The …

Journal of Applied Social Science Research and Practice

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between US Navy T-45C flight simulation training time, actual aircraft training time, and intermediate and advanced jet pilot competence as measured by the Naval Standard Score (NSS). Examining the relationships between US Navy T-45C flight simulation time and actual aircraft flight time may provide further information on flight simulation training versus actual aircraft training to aviation authorities, flight instructors, the military aviation community, the commercial aviation community, and academia. The study was non-experimental, correlational, causal-comparative with an emphasis upon the establishment of mathematic and predictive relationships using archival data from …

Near Real Time Satellite Event Detection And Characterization With Remote Photoacoustic Signatures, Justin Spurbeck, Moriba K. Jah Feb 2019

Near Real Time Satellite Event Detection And Characterization With Remote Photoacoustic Signatures, Justin Spurbeck, Moriba K. Jah

Space Traffic Management Conference

Active satellites frequently maneuver to mitigate conjunctions and maintain nominal mission orbits. With an ever-growing Resident Space Object (RSO) population, the need to detect and predict any changes in active RSO trajectories has become increasingly important. There is typically a lag on the order of hours to days from time of maneuver to unmodeled dynamic event detection depending on the magnitude of the delta-v. For uncooperative objects, this detection lag poses a threat to other satellites. Implementing an active photoacoustic signature change detection methodology to detect and predict unmodeled dynamic events would reduce the overall conjunction risk and provide a …

Chip-Off Success Rate Analysis Comparing Temperature And Chip Type, Choli Ence, Joan Runs Through, Gary D. Cantrell Feb 2019

Chip-Off Success Rate Analysis Comparing Temperature And Chip Type, Choli Ence, Joan Runs Through, Gary D. Cantrell

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Throughout the digital forensic community, chip-off analysis provides examiners with a technique to obtain a physical acquisition from locked or damaged digital device. Thermal based chip-analysis relies upon the application of heat to remove the flash memory chip from the circuit board. Occasionally, a flash memory chip fails to successfully read despite following similar protocols as other flash memory chips. Previous research found the application of high temperatures increased the number of bit errors present in the flash memory chip. The purpose of this study is to analyze data collected from chip-off analyses to determine if a statistical difference exists …

Evaluation Of Unmanned Aircraft Flying Qualities Using A Stitched Learjet Model, Patrick M. Callaghan Feb 2019

Evaluation Of Unmanned Aircraft Flying Qualities Using A Stitched Learjet Model, Patrick M. Callaghan

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, military UAVs have taken over missions that were too dull, dirty, or dangerous for manned aircraft. The increased demand has led to a build-fly-fix-fly development mentality, plaguing the early lifecycle with staggering mishap rates. Currently, MIL-STD-1797 lists flying qualities for UAVs as TBD, and the standards for manned fixed wing are inadequate when applied to UAVs. In an effort to expand the database of UAV flying qualities, an analysis was completed on a Simulink model of an LJ-25D developed from Calspans Variable Stability System aircraft at the United States Test Pilot School. Three maneuvers were simulated: (1) …

Chief Justice Leadership: A Brief Sketch Of Its Landscape, Structure, And Operation, David A. Root Feb 2019

Chief Justice Leadership: A Brief Sketch Of Its Landscape, Structure, And Operation, David A. Root

Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences

This article examines chief justice leadership of the United States Supreme Court during the judicial decision-making process and develops a model of such leadership in three distinct parts: landscape, structure, and operation. The landscape consists of five interactive stages in the judicial decision-making process: certiorari, oral argument, conference, majority opinion assignment, and opinion drafting. Structurally, three prevailing conditions on the Court create a “democratic default”: life tenure, equal vote, and free voice. In terms of operation, the office employs small-group leadership and its twin pillars of task and social leadership in conjunction with behavioral leadership and its three types of …

What Next For Russia’S Front-Line States?, Keir Giles Mr. Feb 2019

What Next For Russia’S Front-Line States?, Keir Giles Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Russia’s annexation of Crimea and intervention in Eastern Ukraine in 2014, alarmed not only Western-leaning states in Central Europe and the Baltic but also Moscow’s traditional allies. These events signaled that Moscow is now willing and capable of using direct military force against perceived strategic threats in its self-proclaimed region of vested interests. With the exception of Ukraine and the Baltic States, this Letort Paper examines how Russia’s front-line states have adjusted their foreign policy posture since 2014. Belarus, Moldova, the states of Central Asia and the South Caucasus calculate the benefits and risks in their relationship with Moscow and …

National Menace: Mediating Homo/Sexuality And Sovereignty In The Polish National/Ist Discourses, R Kulpa Feb 2019

National Menace: Mediating Homo/Sexuality And Sovereignty In The Polish National/Ist Discourses, R Kulpa

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

The bio-political discourses of nationhood and homo/sexuality burgeon geo-culturally and historically, and this article presents a case-study of Poland post-2004 EU enlargement. Focused on the (televised) presidential media orchestrations of the ‘EU and homosexual menace’ and parliamentary resolutions, the tensions between nationhood and sexuality are analysed through the prisms of dislocation, surplus, rhetoric of fear and antagonism. The presented argument: (1) discusses the complex simultaneity of discursive relations (rejection and dependency, flagrancy and obscurity, desire and abjection) spanning political and cultural narratives; (2) accentuates the evocative role of the emotive repertoire of media strategies deployed in the political and cultural …
