“They Were Playing Chicken”—The U.S. Asiatic Fleet’S Gray-Zone Deterrence Campaign Against Japan, 1937–40, Hunter Stires

Naval War College Review

The current environment is not the first time the United States has faced a destabilizing challenge in the western Pacific. In 1937, Japanese forces in China undertook a campaign to expel U.S., British, and other Western interests from that country as part of imperial Japan’s effort to dominate East Asia. The gray-zone tactics used during the Japanese campaign of 1937–40, and the deterrence actions of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet, can help shed light on the situation in the China Sea today.

Storm Clouds On The Horizon—Challenges And Recommendations For Military Recruiting And Retention, Christopher J. Mcmahon, Colin J. Bernard

Naval War College Review

In light of current Department of Defense (DoD) priorities to increase the size of the military forces, new strategies must be developed to recruit and retain high-quality personnel with the right expertise to fill the expanding number of open billets. DoD should consider modifying existing policies to address this need, lest serious personnel issues overtake other force priorities.

Back To Basics—Research Design For The Operational Level Of War, Margaret M. Polski

Naval War College Review

The military-research criteria gap has been a challenge for researchers and planners. By examining the nature of war fighting and exploring how we could better assess, select, and evaluate research methods, we will create a more informed research process, ultimately leading to improved practices and more-credible outcomes.

Preparing Today For The Mines Of Tomorrow, Joshua Edwards

Naval War College Review

Maritime mining long has been called on to support various naval strategies. However, shifting objectives and naval priorities call for new analysis. By adapting methodologies developed for land mines, we can find measures of effectiveness (MOEs) aligned to operational objectives, explore developmental mining concepts, and present new MOEs for maritime mining operations.

Nato’S Selective Sea Blindness—Assessing The Alliance’S New Navies, Thomas-Durell Young Jun 2019

Nato’S Selective Sea Blindness—Assessing The Alliance’S New Navies, Thomas-Durell Young

Naval War College Review

The navies of NATO countries fall into two categories: old and new. The new navies lack modernization and readiness, making them deficient in their contributions to NATO security priorities. Sea blindness is a problem across the spectrum of NATO governments and illuminating this problem is now more important than ever in light of an increasingly aggressive Russia.

Late Imperial And Soviet "Show" Trials, 1878-1938, David M. Crowe Jun 2019

Late Imperial And Soviet "Show" Trials, 1878-1938, David M. Crowe

History Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"According to Cassidy, the imperial 'show' trials, which began in the 1870s, were a series of 'highly publicized public spectacles that spread the ideas of Russian radicalism even as they condemned the radicals themselves to imprisonment, exile, hard labor, civil death, or execution.'4 They also became a source of 'popular entertainment' that drew large audiences and helped, according Elizabeth A. Wood, create a link in the public imagination between 'revolution and trials.' Georgii Plekhanov, one of Russia's foremost Marxists, saw the 'revolutionary trials in the 1870s and 1880s' as 'the greatest historical drama which is called the trial of …

Globalisation And Consolidation Of Dependency And Underdevelopment In Africa, Rashid Ating Jun 2019

Globalisation And Consolidation Of Dependency And Underdevelopment In Africa, Rashid Ating

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Globalisation is a process which transformed the world into a single political economy. Africa is one of the continents that is sharply affected by globalisation. This paper examined the impacts of globalisation in consolidating Africa's economic and political dependency and underdevelopment. The problem is globalisation comes up with many opportunities, especially for developing countries, but, Africa failed to utilize the opportunities. The paper is a conceptual paper which used secondary sources of data for analysis and interpretations. The work discovered that Africa found itself more caged in a circle of dependency and underdevelopment despite all the trade negotiations, open opportunities, …

Disbelieved Through Millennia: Cassandra As Woman Truth-Teller And Translator, Marissa Lewis Jun 2019

Disbelieved Through Millennia: Cassandra As Woman Truth-Teller And Translator, Marissa Lewis

Honors Projects

This paper investigates two major characterizations of the mythological figure Cassandra, reading her in Aeschylus’ Agamemnon and Seneca’s Agamemnon as a woman truth-teller and translator. It develops a notion of translation as negotiation of discursive space and breaking open of boundaries, including boundaries between pairs of languages, experiences, times, and places. This sense of translation draws on the reception theory of Charles Martindale and privileges the discursive location of the translator as integral to their translation; a specifically female translator occupies different discursive spaces than her male counterpart due to the social experience of gender. In Aeschylus’ Agamemnon, Cassandra’s …

Mapping Maya Hinterlands: Lidar Derived Visualization To Identify Small Scale Features In Northwestern Belize, Jeremy Mcfarland, Marisol Cortes-Rincon Ph.D.

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

This paper will discuss the processes and methods of relief visualization of LiDAR-derived digital elevation models (DEM’s) and classification of secondary data to identify archaeological remains on the ancient Maya landscape in northwestern Belize. The basis of the research explores various Geographic Information System (GIS) and cartographic techniques to visualize topographical relief. Graphic terrain maps assist archaeologists with predictive settlement patterns. The Relief Visualization Toolbox (RVT 1.3) aids to visualize raster DEM datasets in the predictive identification and interpretation of small-scale archaeological features. This dataset and methodology can be utilized to answer questions of population estimates, mobility costs, and effectiveness …

Trends In Health, Stress, And Migration In The Pre-Contact Southwest United States, Alexis O'Donnell

Anthropology ETDs

The major goal of this dissertation was to examine migration and its impacts on health through use of dental morphological and paleopathological data. The case study is the Southwest United States between A.D. 1200-1400s. The second chapter, written with Corey Ragsdale, Biological Distance and the Fate of the Gallina in the American Southwest, examines where the Gallina people may have gone upon abandoning their homes in the late A.D. 1200s. We used dental data for 492 individuals and mean measure of divergence (biodistance) analysis to examine several hypotheses regarding where the Gallina went. We find that the Gallina may have …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Detailed knowledge of the shape of the seafloor is crucial to humankind. Bathymetry data is critical for safety of navigation and is used for many other applications. In an era of ongoing environmental degradation worldwide, bathymetry data (and the knowledge derived from it) play a pivotal role in using and managing the world’s oceans in a way that is in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 – conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. However, the vast majority of our oceans is still virtually unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored. Only a small …

Advanced Resilient Practices: Demythologizing Design Heritage, Fahrettin Ersin Alaca, David Muñoz Alcántara

Nordes Conference Series

This paper presents an international research, exhibition and forum project that has been developing since 2016. The project aims to demythologize design’s consumerist Utopias and sectoral hierarchies as a series of temporary artistic and design interventions. By socio-historical analysis of politics of design, the project involves blurring the borders between exhibition, archival display, and action research. This involves pushing forward Pratt’s “contact zone” as a technological site of embodied advanced practice of design critique together with the exercise of dissent foregrounding ecology of practices. The present paper focuses on the project’s methods and research outcome concerning the case of Finnish …

مقترحات خصوم الدعوة ومنهج القرآن في الرد عليها The Qur'anic Approach In Responding To Da'wa Opponents' Suggestions, Ayesh Ali Lababneh

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies

The study aimed at disclosing the Qur'anic approach in responding to Da'wa opponents' suggestions during the time of Qur'an revelation. Using both inductive and deductive methods the study reached the conclusion that "challenging through suggesting" is one of the Intellectual conflict and psychological warfare methods faced the Da'wa.

The study also uncovered the aims behind these "suggestions" and the Qur'an methodology in responding to them.

In conclusion, the study highlights the need to study the styles of the intellectual conflict used against Da'wa in order to keep people away from Islam and promote uncertainties around Da'wa.

Thucydides’ Other “Traps”: The United States, China, And The Prospect Of “Inevitable” War, Alan Greeley Misenheimer

NDU Case Studies

The notion of a “Thucydides Trap” that will ensnare China and the United States in a 21st century conflict—much as the rising power of Athens alarmed Sparta and made war “inevitable” between the Aegean superpowers of the 5th century BCE—has received global attention since entering the international relations lexicon 6 years ago. Scholars, journalists, bloggers, and politicians in many countries, notably China, have embraced this beguiling metaphor, coined by Harvard political science professor Graham Allison, as a framework for examining the likelihood of a Sino-American war.
