Aircraft Concept Design For A Survivable Autonomous Tanker, Neal Ottinger Jul 2019

Aircraft Concept Design For A Survivable Autonomous Tanker, Neal Ottinger

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

The purpose of this concept design is to assess the performance of a survivable and autonomous tanker aircraft that would augment the current U.S. Air Force tanker fleet as a low-cost solution for delivering fuel to fighter aircraft in high-risk combat environments. The design process started with research of the performance parameters and mission profiles of current tanker and fighter aircraft, which was leveraged to create a mission profile and a set of specifications for the conceptual design. The tanker aircraft was required to have a flight range of 3,000 miles, cruise at 35,000 feet at Mach 0.85, and offload …

Recommendations For Success In Afghanistan, M. Chris Mason Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The United States will soon enter the 18th year of combat operations in Afghanistan. During that time, multiple approaches to stabilize the country have been tried, including support to regional security initiatives, “nation-building,” counterinsurgency, counternarcotics, counterterrorism, and “train and equip.” The constellation of anti-government elements known collectively as the Taliban continues to refuse reconciliation or a negotiated peace under the existing Afghan constitution.

Meet The New Villain, Same As The Old Villain: The New Cold War In American Tv, Film, And Video Games, Declan Cronin

Of Life and History

In 1966, the lovable crew of the Спрут landed in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Hollywood’s rendering of these Russians in The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming would prove to be the exception to the rule in Western media for years. A staple of Western entertainment since the mid-20thcentury, Russian adversaries have not faded from the limelight in the post-Cold War era. Rather, Western portrayals of Russian antagonists have largely continued to reflect contemporaneous states of Western-Russian relations. By studying Russian portrayals in Western media (namely television, film, and 21stcentury video games) within their historical context, …

Artemisinin: From Chinese Herbal Medicine To Modern Chemotherapy, Anthony Butler Jul 2019

Artemisinin: From Chinese Herbal Medicine To Modern Chemotherapy, Anthony Butler

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Malaria is a disease that has blighted humankind since early times. The first antimalarial treatment available to Europeans was the dried bark of the cinchona tree from Peru. The main problem in its use was adulteration by other material. The ‘active principle’ was first extracted in 1820 and named quinine. It was found to be a more powerful and reliable drug than cinchona bark. Once its chemical structure had been determined, it was possible to synthesize substances chemically related to quinine that were equally powerful but could be manufactured industrially. Mepacrine (atabrine) was amongst the most successful, but had adverse …

Becoming A Superpower: China’S Rise And The Belt And Road Initiative In Latin America, Garrett Bullock Jul 2019

Becoming A Superpower: China’S Rise And The Belt And Road Initiative In Latin America, Garrett Bullock

History Summer Fellows

Is China a Superpower? Will it become one? After half a century of establishing a strong international military presence, thriving economic growth, domestic/international political authority, and considerable cultural “soft power”, the PRC has emerged as a hegemon capable of competing in international geopolitics. Nevertheless, these questions remain unanswered. For this reason, this research explores what it means to be a superpower, whether China is or will be a superpower, and, importantly, what impact China’s rise has on the world. To do this, this research explores existing debates surrounding China’s current global status, the historical emergence of the PRC as a …

Kashmir As A Symbol Of Pakistan: Why Violence In Kashmir Never Stop?, Wonjune Hwang Jul 2019

Kashmir As A Symbol Of Pakistan: Why Violence In Kashmir Never Stop?, Wonjune Hwang

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Kashmir has been a 'powder keg' in South Asia. In this region, India and Pakistan waged three all-out wars and numerous skirmishes. Kashmir has been occupied separately since 1947, but still, both sides claim the other’s occupation is illegal. Muslim Kashmiris, who are allegedly supported by Pakistan, continuously commit terrorist acts, and in return, Indian officials in Jammu and Kashmir violently suppress demonstrations and commit human right violations. After 9/11 in 2001, terrorists have become demonized and pardonless. This article focuses on analyzing the sources of violence and Pakistani intervention. The idea of this article is theoretically based on Volkan's …

Resisting The Victimization: Examining Ideological Tensions Of Race, Gender, Sexuality And Transnationality Among First-Generation Chinese Migrant Women In U.S. Academia, Zhao Ding Jul 2019

Resisting The Victimization: Examining Ideological Tensions Of Race, Gender, Sexuality And Transnationality Among First-Generation Chinese Migrant Women In U.S. Academia, Zhao Ding

Communication ETDs

This dissertation explored the daily experiences of first-generation Chinese migrant women who study and/or work in universities and colleges in the United States of America. Drawing on previous scholarship on whiteness studies and Asian American gender and sexuality studies with femiqueer perspectives, the primary goal of this study was to gain a better understanding of these Chinese migrant women’s daily experiences and negotiations with power relations concerning race, gender, and sexuality, and to challenge the dominant perceptions and constructions of Chinese/Asian women. By analyzing their narratives of everyday experiences, I found that white heteronormative patriarchal ideologies have been globally promoted, …

Meta-Analysis Of Public Acceptance Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems In The United States, Miles M. Legere Jul 2019

Meta-Analysis Of Public Acceptance Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems In The United States, Miles M. Legere

Student Works

Automated and unmanned systems are rapidly revolutionizing every aspect of military, commercial, and public use operations in the United States. While this technology serves effectively in dull, dirty, and dangerous tasks, the rapid introduction of unmanned technologies into society has generated intense debate about their ethical, moral, and legal use. Specifically, the rise in the development and application of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) has created significant public discord. As public acceptance of UAS plays a major role in the regulatory decisions that allow for expanded use in commercial and public use applications, it is critically important to understand the complexities …

Clever Cleric: Saint Wilfrid Of York And The Complexities Of Power And Authority In Seventh-Century England, Olivia E. Gannon

History ETDs

Saint Wilfrid of York was a Northumbrian bishop, abbot, and missionary. He was born in 634 and died in 709/710. His life was characterized by his landholdings that spanned territories and kingdoms, his enduring persistence to remain bishop, his monastic empire, his hostile relationships with kings, his powerful friends and supporters, and his resistance in the face of adversity. Wilfrid’s achievements were remarkable for a seventh-century bishop – a bishop deserving of recognition for his lasting impact on England. By closely examining the sources, this thesis analyzes Wilfrid’s tumultuous life and career in the form of his landholdings, his trips …

Like Father, Like Son: Modelling Masculinity For The Ethical Leadership Of President Theodore Roosevelt, Elizabeth Summerfield Jul 2019

Like Father, Like Son: Modelling Masculinity For The Ethical Leadership Of President Theodore Roosevelt, Elizabeth Summerfield

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

President Theodore Roosevelt is frequently portrayed as a rugged, hypermasculine cowboy. But this depiction ignores the powerful modelling for masculine leadership provided by his father, Theodore Roosevelt senior. A closer examination of the private and public spheres that framed the latter’s life offers another route into understanding the ethical and rational motivations that characterised his progressive Presidency, not least in the area of natural resource management, where his policy innovations were both unprecedented and sustained over time. What emerges is a more complex portrait than the above stereotype, a leader who used his heart, head and experience to think and …

Morality Without Borders: A Vision Of Humanity As Community, Joseph P. Hester, Don R. Killian Jul 2019

Morality Without Borders: A Vision Of Humanity As Community, Joseph P. Hester, Don R. Killian

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Identity politics is on the rise, and not only in America, but throughout the world. It is an inherent nationalism, and when unbridled and unchecked, unleashes an exclusive ethic into society appealing, not to an expansive moral ought, but one that is narrow and provincial, condemning and vilifying. The fact of national diversity and the imprint of dissimilar value orientations often cause fear and insecurity among groups and sub-groups who are apt to condense their value-orientation vis-à-vis their national or cultural identity, promoting ethical relativism and neglecting core human values. With a diminishing of religion’s consecrated and sanctified moral vision, …

Many Layers Of Values-Based Leadership, Joseph P. Hester Jul 2019

Many Layers Of Values-Based Leadership, Joseph P. Hester

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Our common recognition of leaders and leadership reveals an assortment of men and women, some who are who predisposed to service, some who are humble but forthright, and others who exert narcissistic tendencies coupled with authoritarian attitudes. All of these have been and are called “leaders.” Hence, to unearth what is meant by “moral leadership” or “values-based leadership” (VBL) strains our understanding as many layers of value expose the diversity implied by the moniker “values-based.”

Implementing The Leader Development That Counts, Ryan J. Orsini Jul 2019

Implementing The Leader Development That Counts, Ryan J. Orsini

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Effective leader development is too often the first casualty of high demands placed on leaders, from corporate America to the U.S. military. A comparison of these entities’ common leader development programs and workforce feedback reveals insufficient strategies and competing priorities. Organizations succumbing to these obstacles unknowingly find themselves trapped in adverse cycles of leadership development, perpetuating undernourished talent and mediocre performance. This problem will not fix itself. Organizations must refocus efforts to understand and implement a leader driven, interpersonally focused, and culturally ingrained brand of leader development to maximize available talent in crafting their envisioned organization.

Cape Verdean Theatre: Enacting Political Theory And Reclaiming Roots For Crioulo Performance, Eunice S. Ferreira Jul 2019

Cape Verdean Theatre: Enacting Political Theory And Reclaiming Roots For Crioulo Performance, Eunice S. Ferreira

Journal of Cape Verdean Studies

Shining a spotlight on the Cape Verde Islands illuminates the rich diversity of theatre of the African diaspora and places its unique crioulo identity and creole identities in general, center stage. This article focuses on the post-independence theatre movement in Cape Verde where the re-Africanization theories of Amílcar Cabral (assassinated PAIGC leader in Cape Verde’s liberation struggle) shaped national identity and guided the pioneering work of theatre troupe Korda Kaoberdi (Wake up, Cape Verde). Under the dynamic leadership of Francisco Gomes Fragoso, a medical doctor who adopted the artistic name of Kwame Kondé, the troupe Korda Kaoberdi sought to create …

Supply Chain Opportunity Costs About To Explode, Michael Gravier

Marketing Department Faculty Journal Articles

The cost of tariffs gets a lot of popular media attention, but it’s a shallow treatment of a complex disease. Yesterday Bloomberg ran a piece titled, “The Age of Global Supply Chains Is in Trouble,” about the worrying impact of export restrictions on global supply chains.

How Vision Governs The Collective Behaviour Of Dense Cycling Pelotons, J. Belden, Mohammad M. Mansoor, A. Hellum, S. R. Rahman, A. Meyer, C. Pease, J. Pacheco, S. Koziol, Tadd T. Truscott

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

In densely packed groups demonstrating collective behaviour, such as bird flocks, fish schools or packs of bicycle racers (cycling pelotons), information propagates over a network, with individuals sensing and reacting to stimuli over relatively short space and time scales. What remains elusive is a robust, mechanistic understanding of how sensory system properties affect interactions, information propagation and emergent behaviour. Here, we show through direct observation how the spatio-temporal limits of the human visual sensory system govern local interactions and set the network structure in large, dense collections of cyclists. We found that cyclists align in patterns within a ± 30° …

Armed Groups And The Protection Of Health Care, Ezequiel Heffes Jul 2019

Armed Groups And The Protection Of Health Care, Ezequiel Heffes

International Law Studies

That armed groups have been responsible for attacks against health care personnel and for violating the protection of health care is not news. This is one of the greatest humanitarian challenges of contemporary armed conflict. Armed groups, however, have also attempted to evacuate and treat wounded enemy fighters and civilians and, in certain contexts, they have even provided health care services for the civilian population living in the territories under their control. This article describes some of the key issues related to the variation of armed groups’ behaviors when dealing with the protection of health care, inquiring into why some …

Modified Ambient Mass Spectrometric Methods For Field Screening And Confirmation Of Forensic Evidence, William Lee Fatigante Jul 2019

Modified Ambient Mass Spectrometric Methods For Field Screening And Confirmation Of Forensic Evidence, William Lee Fatigante

Theses and Dissertations

The utility of field-portable analytical instrumentation has the potential to revolutionize many fields of science, particularly for forensic science and law enforcement. While colorimetric testing can be employed for drug evidence screening, the influx of novel psychoactive substances has significantly decreased the effectiveness of this investigation strategy. One approach to meeting the needs of today’s practitioner is coupling flexible, ambient ionization techniques with portable mass spectrometric (MS) instrumentation. Ambient ionization techniques have a rich history of being amendable to the sample at hand. Since their inception in 2005, numerous techniques saturate the field. The main drive for this development is …
