Gustav Mahler: An Honorary Secessionist, Grant Estes Aug 2019

Gustav Mahler: An Honorary Secessionist, Grant Estes

Music: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Gustav Mahler’s artistic philosophy was closely related to that of the Secessionists in fin-de-siècle Vienna. His work, both as the director of the Imperial Opera and as a composer, was based on the idea that art should be paramount over personal, sociological, and historical influences. Thus, Mahler should be viewed as an honorary Secessionist who, though personally distant from the Secessionist movement, continually sought higher artistic standards and freedom. This essay will focus on the first movement of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony and contemporary criticisms of the work to better understand both Mahler’s music and the environment in which he worked.

Alternative Therapeutic Mechanisms Of Novel Phenoxyalkyl Pyridinium Oximes To Treat Organophosphorus Compounds, Royce Harrison Nichols Aug 2019

Alternative Therapeutic Mechanisms Of Novel Phenoxyalkyl Pyridinium Oximes To Treat Organophosphorus Compounds, Royce Harrison Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

Organophosphates (OPs), such as nerve agents and insecticides, potently inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Oximes, such as the currently FDA approved oxime 2-PAM, remove the OP from the inhibited enzyme. 2-PAM is effective against select OPs and cannot effectively pass the blood-brain barrier to attenuate OP induced CNS damage. Our laboratory has synthesized a series of substituted phenoxyalkyl pyridinium oximes (Patent number: 9,227,937) that have demonstrated increased survival rates compared to 2-PAM. This research investigated 1) in vitro oxime reactivation of rat, human, and guinea pig serum BChE after inhibition by nerve agent and insecticidal OPs; 2) in vitro determination of reactivation …

The Future Of War: Cyber-Attacks And Aggression In International Law, Jamie Hogan Aug 2019

The Future Of War: Cyber-Attacks And Aggression In International Law, Jamie Hogan

University Honors Theses

Cyber-attacks are becoming more advanced, and more dangerous, but can these simple lines of code be considered acts of war? My research looks at cyber-attacks through international law framework regarding jus ad bellum, the resort to war. After looking at cyber-attacks through this lens, it is possible to declare certain types of cyber-attacks as acts of aggression, and ultimately allow states to invoke their right of self-defense in response to these attacks. My research will then address the need for international law regulating these new weapons of war.

Utilization Of The Software Communication Architecture For Software Defined Radio Waveform Development, Noah Acosta Aug 2019

Utilization Of The Software Communication Architecture For Software Defined Radio Waveform Development, Noah Acosta

Small Satellite Conference

The Software Communication Architecture (SCA) is a method developed for the U.S military's Joint Tactical Radio Systems that aims to standardized the way in which software defined radios for the U.S armed forces are to be configured and built. Most developmental software defined radios use proprietary software such as GNURadio Companion (GRC) or Gqrx SDR to construct waveforms for RF applications. Here we utilize a suite of tools called eCo Architect and eCo Inspector developed by NordiaSoft, which conforms the end-to-end waveform to satisfy the SCA requirements. In this paper, we present an evaluation on waveform development using the SCA …

Planning For A War In Paradise: The 1966 Honolulu Conference And The Shape Of The Vietnam War, Gregory A. Daddis

History Faculty Articles and Research

This article explores the impact of one of the key non-military events in the U.S. war in Vietnam, at least in the crucial years from 1964 to 1968. During a two-day U.S.–South Vietnamese conference held in Honolulu in early 1966, Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara and Secretary of State Dean Rusk laid out a series of overarching strategic objectives, both military and political, that shaped the allied war effort through the 1968 Tet offensive, and even beyond. The goals outlined at the summit remained the touchstone of U.S. military strategy until they were superseded in 1969 by a policy …

The Battle Of The Sexes: Montagu V. Swift, Madison Savoie Aug 2019

The Battle Of The Sexes: Montagu V. Swift, Madison Savoie

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Two of the most interesting “guardians” of eighteenth-century sociocultural standards were the satirists Jonathan Swift and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. Swift is remembered by scholars as one of the “greatest prose satirists in the history of English Literature,” but Montagu, until recent decades, has been less well-known. This thesis will look at the satirical poetic dialogue between the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Swift and the Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and provide insights into the sociocultural dynamics of gender in eighteenth-century British print life as revealed by the individual texts.

Data Regulation With Chinese Characteristics, Henry S. Gao Aug 2019

Data Regulation With Chinese Characteristics, Henry S. Gao

Centre for AI & Data Governance (2019-2025)

Data regulation has become a key issue in today’s world. For various reasons, however, it has been challenging to understand data regulations in China, home to the largest e-commerce market in the world. This paper traces the evolution of data and Internet regulation in China, from the early days of the Chinese Internet, to the regulatory turf wars among different agencies, and all the way to the elevation of data and Internet regulation to the level of national security and the rise of a super-agency in charge of the issue in recent years. The paper argues that, the Chinese Internet …

Understanding Taiwan Presidential Election: A Review Paper, Shida Zhong Aug 2019

Understanding Taiwan Presidential Election: A Review Paper, Shida Zhong

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This paper seeks to find a systematic understanding of the presidential election in Taiwan. Based on the Taiwanese national identity issue as the main social cleavage, I try to review the literature about Taiwan’s presidential election and find the factors that influence the result of presidential election. I try to sort the factors into three dimensions: issue voting, valence voting and social context. Meanwhile, this paper also contains a brief introduction of democratization in Taiwan as a history background and a short review on the past Taiwan presidential election. The purpose of paper is to shine a light on the …

The Dangerous New Us Consensus On China And The Future Of Us-China Relations, Mel Gurtov, Mark Selden Aug 2019

The Dangerous New Us Consensus On China And The Future Of Us-China Relations, Mel Gurtov, Mark Selden

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The trade war and technological competition with China are symptomatic of a much larger issue: a dangerous gridlock in US-China relations that may become permanent, with dire consequences not just for the two countries’ economies but also for the global economy and quite possibly East Asia’s and international security. Martin Wolf, Financial Times columnist, is right to conclude: “Across-the-board rivalry with China is becoming an organising principle of US economic, foreign and security policies.”1 The fact that this conflict has occurred at a time of trade, investment, and security disputes between the US and its major allies, US-Russia tensions, …

Environmentalism Isn’T New: Lessons From Indigenous Law, Joseph Kowalski Aug 2019

Environmentalism Isn’T New: Lessons From Indigenous Law, Joseph Kowalski

Buffalo Environmental Law Journal

The much-overlooked laws and lifeways of Indigenous people show that concepts of environmental sustainability have long been a part of the human tradition. By studying the Indigenous jurisprudence of societies that maintained these traditions into the modern era, much can be learned. Rather than making laws in regards to the land, the land itself was the source of the law, for the environmental laws were built around a relationship with the land.

Through most of human history, the western world had a similar relationship. However, the Holy Roman Empire’s interpretation of Biblical scripture, which at that time was law, forever …

Additionally, the effectiveness of prevention and mitigation measures of the concerned governments is also examined. Southeast Asian countries have experienced the persistent threat of Islamic violent extremism for decades. The exploitation of chemical weapons (CW) reflects new developments in the methods of committing terrorist acts. Al Qaeda and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) have demonstrated the intent and capability of chemical …

Fascism And Monopoly, Daniel A. Crane Aug 2019

Fascism And Monopoly, Daniel A. Crane

Law & Economics Working Papers

The recent revival of political interest in antitrust has resurfaced a longstanding debate about the role of industrial concentration and monopoly in enabling Hitler’s rise to power and the Third Reich’s wars of aggression. Proponents of stronger antitrust enforcement argue that monopolies and cartels brought the Nazis to power and warn that rising concentration in the American economy could similarly threaten democracy. Skeptics demur, observing that German big business largely opposed Hitler during the crucial years of his ascent. Drawing on business histories and archival material from the U.S. Office of Military Government’s Decartelization Unit, this Article assesses the historical …

Innovative Empires, Marisa C. Cavin Aug 2019

Innovative Empires, Marisa C. Cavin

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

In this unit students will investigate how empires rose in certain places where plenty of resources supported innovation. It focuses on the study of four empires throughout time and space: Persian, Han Chinese, Roman, and Incan. Students will answer the questions: “How can location and time period lead to innovation?”, “How are people shaped by, and how do they shape their environments?”, and “Which innovation had the most impact?”. By critically analyzing these empires, developing research journals, and constructing arguments and evaluation of the significance of resources and innovations on these societies, students will be more prepared to understand the …

Developing And Securing Software For Small Space Systems, Brandon L. Shirley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The space systems industry is moving towards smaller multi-vendor satellites, known as Small Space. This shift is driven by economic and technological factors that necessitate hardware and software components that are modular, reusable, and secure. This research addresses two problems associated with the development of modular, reusable, and secure space systems: developing software for space systems (the Development Problem) and securing space systems (the Security Problem). These two problems are interrelated and this research addresses them together.

The Development Problem encompasses challenges that space systems developers face as they try to address the constraints induced by reduced budgets, …

"Comme Je Trouve:" The Butlers, Earls Of Ormond, And Political Power In Kilkenny, Ireland, 1392-1452, Senia S. Foster

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

After the English-led invasion of Ireland, between 1169 and 1172, the country was run by Anglo-Irish lords—English and Welsh men gifted with Irish land and titles for their service to the English King. Of these families, the Butlers were one of the three most powerful in the country. The 3rd and 4th Earls of Ormond, both named James Butler, each held the highest title in Ireland, Lord Lieutenant, multiple times as well as being successful military leaders. Add to this a large income from all the wine revenues of the country, and the Butlers were a force to …

The Scientific Romances Of Jules Verne And H.G. Wells: Imperialism Disguised As Progress In The Early Days Of Science Fiction, Timothy Ferris Aug 2019

The Scientific Romances Of Jules Verne And H.G. Wells: Imperialism Disguised As Progress In The Early Days Of Science Fiction, Timothy Ferris

Theses and Dissertations

Frequently in their respective oeuvres, Verne and Wells write in a rhetoric of conquest that almost always translates to discovering a more efficient means of taming wild, non-European environments. These goals extend not only to the lands that their protagonists explore, but also to human beings and other life that may populate them. Indeed, the underlying focus—the one that is masked behind the thrill and adventure of both Wells and Verne—is none other than the march of progress as understood by middle-class Europeans in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Progress can produce positivistic optimism, and it can also …

Interreligious Dialogue In The Religious Styles Perspective: A Qualitative Analysis Of Instrumental Cases, Sally Swanson Aug 2019

Interreligious Dialogue In The Religious Styles Perspective: A Qualitative Analysis Of Instrumental Cases, Sally Swanson

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Interreligious dialogue (IRD) is considered a sacred religious practice ([PCID], 2017; Merdjanova, 2016) and has become increasingly present in interventions to address conflict resulting from exposure to religious diversity (Cornille, 2013; Patel, 2018). However, few empirical efforts have examined the efficacy and outcomes of IRD. A grounded theory approach (Creswell & Poth, 2017) is well-suited to describe the nuanced role of religion in intergroup processes in major theoretical frameworks. Purposeful sampling (Patton, 2005) of 20 cases were selected from archival data of Faith Development Interviews (Streib & Keller, 2018) collected as part of the Developmental change in Spirituality project. Experiences …

The Archaeology Of Mississippian Vulnerability And Resilience In The New Madrid Seismic Zone, Michelle Megan Rathgaber Aug 2019

The Archaeology Of Mississippian Vulnerability And Resilience In The New Madrid Seismic Zone, Michelle Megan Rathgaber

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work examines the vulnerability and resilience of Mississippian people in the Central Mississippi Valley to the large-scale New Madrid seismic zone earthquakes of the late15th to early 16th century. This is done using the theory of eventful archaeology/anthropology to look at cultural materials both before and after an event (such as an earthquake and sand blows) to look for evidence of changes to the schema and resources on which a society relies. If changes are present, the event can be labeled as such, if there are no changes, it means that the society affected did not see the event …

Defining Critical Infrastructure For A Global Application, Colleen M. Newbill Aug 2019

Defining Critical Infrastructure For A Global Application, Colleen M. Newbill

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

A Google search for the phrase "critical infrastructure" turns up 189 million results in little more than a half second: ''global critical infrastructure" has 151 million results; and "definition of critical infrastructure" yields 71.5 million results. The list of what industries and sectors fall under the critical infrastructure designation expands as time progresses and technology develops. As the threat of cyberattacks increases and this frontier of terrorism continues to emerge, attacks on critical infrastructure are high on the list of concerns and the need for protective measures imperative. The focus on protecting critical infrastructure does not stop at the borders …

Cruising Into Conflict: A Mixed Methods Examination Of Cruise Missile Possession And The Initiation Of Military Force, Dennis Crawford Aug 2019

Cruising Into Conflict: A Mixed Methods Examination Of Cruise Missile Possession And The Initiation Of Military Force, Dennis Crawford

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This research examines the effect of cruise missile possession on state behavior. Specifically, it seeks to determine if countries who possess cruise missiles are more likely to initiate a military threat, display, or use of force than countries who do not possess cruise missiles. Traditional International Relations theory suggests that, all else being equal, a state with an asymmetrical military advantage should enjoy concessions from target states, decreasing the likelihood of armed conflict. Accordingly, coercion theory warns the use of armed force to change adversarial behavior should be exercised sparingly. However, this dissertation finds that states possessing cruise missile initiate …

Fear And Trepidation: The Socio-Cultural Impact Of Maritime Piracy And Illicit Smuggling In San Francisco De Campeche 1630 - 1705, Victor Alfonso Medina Lugo

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Piracy has a long history globally, but one of the most extreme periods of pirate activity occurred in the Caribbean Sea during the 16th through the 18th centuries. This thesis analyzes the socio-cultural impact that piracy produced in the port town of San Francisco de Campeche, located in the coastal area of the province of Yucatan in the Kingdom of New Spain. In this port and settlement, Spaniards, the Indigenous population, peoples of African descent and people from throughout the Spanish Empire suffered together the atrocities of the violent sackings and plundering by various groups of robbers from the sea …
