Blurred Lines: Social Media In Armed Conflict, Iphigenia Fisentzou Aug 2019

Blurred Lines: Social Media In Armed Conflict, Iphigenia Fisentzou

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Technological advancements have revolutionised the social interactions of global society and in turn, influenced the means and methods of warfare; increasing the involvement of civilians in hostilities, not only as victims, but also as participants. Together with the involvement of multiple state and non-state actors, civilian participation makes these modern conflicts all the more unpredictable, challenging the traditional notion of direct participation in hostilities established under international law.

Asses Rubbing: Expanding Masculinity Through Gendered Material Networks And Nonnormative Performativity, Ethan Garrett Bryant Aug 2019

Asses Rubbing: Expanding Masculinity Through Gendered Material Networks And Nonnormative Performativity, Ethan Garrett Bryant

Theses - ALL

Masculine normativity has largely dominated and defined the narratives of art history, including access to privileged tools, skills, and aesthetics. This masculine paradigm has structurally embedded an ideology that promotes and normalizes ideals like order, stoicism, logic, and perfection. My art transgresses normative masculinity in order to expand its conceptualization through use of materials, practices, and performances. I select objects, imagery, and performances which are historically tied to personal experiences, aesthetics, and spaces where I have navigated across norms and traditionally accepted boundaries. These objects function as constructed bodies which articulate nonnormative masculine materials and experiences, and form queer networks …

The Feasibility Of Using Behavioural Profiling Technique For Mitigating Insider Threats: Review, G Alotibi, N Clarke, F Li, S Furnell

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Insider threat has become a serious issue to the many organizations. Various companies are increasingly deploying many information technologies to prevent unauthorized access to getting inside their system. Biometrics approaches have some techniques that contribute towards controlling the point of entry. However, these methods mainly are not able to continuously validate the users reliability. In contrast behavioral profiling is one of the biometrics technologies but it focusing on the activities of the users during using the system and comparing that with a previous history. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis, literature review and limitations on behavioral profiling approach and to …

Operational Decision Making Under Uncertainty: Inferential, Sequential, And Adversarial Approaches, Andrew J. Keith Aug 2019

Operational Decision Making Under Uncertainty: Inferential, Sequential, And Adversarial Approaches, Andrew J. Keith

Theses and Dissertations

Modern security threats are characterized by a stochastic, dynamic, partially observable, and ambiguous operational environment. This dissertation addresses such complex security threats using operations research techniques for decision making under uncertainty in operations planning, analysis, and assessment. First, this research develops a new method for robust queue inference with partially observable, stochastic arrival and departure times, motivated by cybersecurity and terrorism applications. In the dynamic setting, this work develops a new variant of Markov decision processes and an algorithm for robust information collection in dynamic, partially observable and ambiguous environments, with an application to a cybersecurity detection problem. In the …

Maritime Autonomous Vehicles Within The International Law Framework To Enhance Maritime Security, Natalie Klein Aug 2019

Maritime Autonomous Vehicles Within The International Law Framework To Enhance Maritime Security, Natalie Klein

International Law Studies

Technological developments necessitate a review of long-standing and diverse international legal principles. The law of the sea is no exception in this regard where the introduction of different Maritime Autonomous Vehicles (MAVs) has prompted consideration of how the laws of naval warfare and rules governing the safety of international shipping accommodate these craft. This paper shifts the focus to the international laws relating to maritime security. It assesses how well the existing international legal framework for maritime security can account for the use of MAVs by law enforcement agencies and by non-state actors who are turning to MAVs for criminal …

Confronting Wartime Sexual Violence: Public Support For Survivors In Bosnia, Douglas D. Page, Samuel Whitt Aug 2019

Confronting Wartime Sexual Violence: Public Support For Survivors In Bosnia, Douglas D. Page, Samuel Whitt

Political Science Faculty Publications

Existing research on conflict-related sexual violence focuses on the motivations of perpetrators and effects on survivors. What remains less clear is how postconflict societies respond to the hardships survivors face. In survey experiments in Bosnia, we examine public support for financial aid, legal aid, and public recognition for survivors. First, we find a persistent ethnocentric view of sexual violence, where respondents are less supportive when the perpetrator is identified as co-ethnic and survivors are perceived as out-groups. Second, respondents are less supportive of male survivors than female survivors, which we attribute to social stigmas surrounding same-gender sexual activity. Consistent with …

Stress Inoculation Training In Rotc Cadets, Ashley N. Doss Ph.D

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 1,100 ROTC facilities are housed at university campuses across the United States (Today’s Military, 2017; Guide to Understanding ROTC Programs, 2017). ROTC provides individuals with the ability to dedicate time and service to leadership training and complete studies in a specified degree field. Poor stress management can significantly impair academic performance and persistence. This study was designed to answer the following questions: 1) can Stress Inoculation Training predict academic performance above and beyond personality and psychological variables in freshmen and sophomores enrolled in a military science program?”, and 2) “Can Stress Inoculation Training predict academic retention above and beyond …

Indigenous Archaeological Approaches To Artifact And Household Analysis At Precolonial Yup'ik Village Temyiq Tuyuryaq (Old Togiak), Dougless I. Skinner Aug 2019

Indigenous Archaeological Approaches To Artifact And Household Analysis At Precolonial Yup'ik Village Temyiq Tuyuryaq (Old Togiak), Dougless I. Skinner

Anthropology

Upper Bristol Bay is home to a multitude of precolonial-and colonial-era villages dotting the coast, islands, and rivers. The bay's dynamic history remains relatively unexplored in archaeological literature. Current data situate people in the region for nearly 6000 years, living in complex, semi-permanent villages, subsisting on large land and sea mammals, fish and mollusks. One such village is Temyiq Tuyuryaq or Old Togiak (GDN-00203). The village is a mounded accumulation of household cycles, sand and organic materials atop an accreting sand spit in the Togiak Bay. Ancestral to Nutaraq Tuyuryaq [New Togiak], the village directly links precolonial and modern Yup'ik …

Dual-Power And Direct Democracy In Fiji: An Analysis Of The Itaukei Administration, Glenn Hall Aug 2019

Dual-Power And Direct Democracy In Fiji: An Analysis Of The Itaukei Administration, Glenn Hall

Capstone Collection

This paper examines the origins, history and social impact of the iTaukei (E-tow-kay) Administration in Fiji, which is an autonomous system of indigenous dual-power within the government of Fiji. It traces the history, social implications, and current status of the iTaukei Administration, focusing on (1) to what extend this administration has frustrated the advances of liberalism in the form of both nation-state and capitalism, and (2) if there is an alternative to the dichotomy of cultural, political, and economic domination of chiefly elites versus that of the global neoliberal hegemony. In this analysis, the origins of developmental discourse is examined, …

"All Things To All Men": The Life And Work Of Monsignor Thomas J. Tobin, Priest Of The Archdiocese Of Portland In Oregon, Samuel Richard Mertz

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a biographical study of the life and work of Monsignor Thomas J. Tobin, a priest of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon. It covers his leadership in the labor movement during World War II, his participation in the Liturgical Movement, and his efforts to bring the Catholic Church in Oregon into ecumenical dialogue with other Christians. It culminates in his involvement in the Second Vatican Council. His activism can only be truly understood within the context of Oregon's vibrant progressive movement, a movement that carried disproportionate influence in a state that was in many ways politically conservative …

The Dehumanization Of Immigrants And Refugees: A Comparison Of Dehumanizing Rhetoric By All Candidates In Three U.S. Presidential Elections, Amanda Warnock Aug 2019

The Dehumanization Of Immigrants And Refugees: A Comparison Of Dehumanizing Rhetoric By All Candidates In Three U.S. Presidential Elections, Amanda Warnock

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

dehumanization theory by tracking and comparing dehumanizing rhetoric used by all presidential candidates during the 2008, 2012, and 2016 campaigns. Using data hand-collected from all presidential speeches conducted during these periods, including accounting for ad-libbing by Donald Trump, I find that Trump was distinctive in his dehumanization of immigrants and refugees, far surpassing all other candidates. His language surrounding these groups focused heavily on (1) using nonhuman language to describe their actions and migrations, (2) assigning criminality and viciousness to immigrants, (3) repeating stories of the deaths of American citizens by immigrants, (4) saying that immigrants and refugees have values …

Drones On The Rise: Societal Misperceptions Of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Renee Keilman Aug 2019

Drones On The Rise: Societal Misperceptions Of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Renee Keilman

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Throughout the past decade, small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have been on the rise in both the civilian and military sectors. It is forecasted that in the near future they will create thousands of jobs and billions in tax revenue due to their ability to execute difficult and hazardous tasks safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. However, one current issue with the proliferation of the technology is a shortage of skilled employees due to a lack of education and common negative public misperceptions associated with them.

To investigate this, responses from a mixed-methods survey will be analyzed. Within the survey, questions such …

The Long-Term Causes And Consequences Of Conflict: A Micro-Level Behavioral Perspective, Joan Barcelo Aug 2019

The Long-Term Causes And Consequences Of Conflict: A Micro-Level Behavioral Perspective, Joan Barcelo

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the behavioral determinants and legacies of conflict from a socio-psychological perspective. The three papers that compose this dissertation investigate use tools of causal inference to explore, on the one hand, the socialization processes that influence leaders' decision to pursue war-like policies and, on the other hand, the longue durée legacy of wartime violence on preferences, as well as on people's proneness to being swayed by messages of collective threat during conflict. The first paper of the dissertation examines the long-term determinants of interstate conflict by exploring the impact of leader's socialization processes. Based on the soft power theory …

Living In This World: A Social History Of Buddhist Monks And Nuns In Nineteenth-Century Western China, Gilbert Zhe Chen Aug 2019

Living In This World: A Social History Of Buddhist Monks And Nuns In Nineteenth-Century Western China, Gilbert Zhe Chen

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation relies on about 600 legal cases from the Ba County Archive that survive from the first three-quarters of the nineteenth century to investigate the social life of ordinary Buddhist monks and nuns. Although they played a crucial in maintaining the survival and proper functioning of Buddhism at the local level, they have remained significantly understudied. This dissertation adopts a bottom-up approach to investigate ordinary monastics’ involvement in various socioeconomic activities. By shifting the analytical focus from elite monks to their more mundane counterparts, this study illuminates how deeply ordinary monastics were embedded in their communities. The shift also …

Collective Survival Strategies And Anti-Colonial Practice In Ecosocial Work, Finn Mclafferty Bell, Mary Kate Dennis, Amy Krings Aug 2019

Collective Survival Strategies And Anti-Colonial Practice In Ecosocial Work, Finn Mclafferty Bell, Mary Kate Dennis, Amy Krings

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Oppressed communities have long used strategies of caring for and protecting each other to ensure their collective survival. We argue for ecosocial workers to critically interrogate how agency, history, and culture structure environmental problems and our responses to them, by developing a resilience-based framework, collective survival strategies (CSS). CSS consider power, culture and history and build upon the strengths of oppressed communities facing global environmental changes. We challenge the dominant narrative of climate change as a “new” problem and connect it to colonization. We discuss implications by examining a social work program explicitly built on Indigenous knowledges and anti-colonial practice.

Midwifery And Society: A Comparative Analysis Of The Uk And Ussr From 1920-1950, Melissa Scott Aug 2019

Midwifery And Society: A Comparative Analysis Of The Uk And Ussr From 1920-1950, Melissa Scott

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this project is to analyze the changes made in midwifery policy and practices in the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom from 1920-1950. The changes made were essentially the following in both countries: required state certification, standardization of pay and schooling, and combating tradition in rural areas. Although they made similar changes, their political ideology and rhetoric was significantly different from one another. The rhetoric used in the Soviet Union in discussing midwifery policies and responsibilities was nationalistic while the rhetoric used in the United Kingdom was much more functionalistic. There were also additional political and societal …

Bleeding Into Space: Environmental Violence, Serialized Trauma, And Extradiegetic Space In Brian Wood’S Comic The Massive, Dustin C. Rozier

University Honors Theses

In Brian Wood's The Massive, a comic detailing a world suffering from ecological destruction due to the actions of the Anthropocene, Environmental and Trauma Studies are uniquely positioned to find a new medium of representation in the hybrid word and image form of comics. This series, which consists of serialized issues with both an individual and collective narrative structure, must work to both maintain the overall narrative while telling smaller stories within each issue. In The Massive, each issue works to situate the reader within the framework of the story through flashbacks of individual characters and the climate …

Gustav Mahler: An Honorary Secessionist, Grant Estes Aug 2019

Gustav Mahler: An Honorary Secessionist, Grant Estes

Music: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Gustav Mahler’s artistic philosophy was closely related to that of the Secessionists in fin-de-siècle Vienna. His work, both as the director of the Imperial Opera and as a composer, was based on the idea that art should be paramount over personal, sociological, and historical influences. Thus, Mahler should be viewed as an honorary Secessionist who, though personally distant from the Secessionist movement, continually sought higher artistic standards and freedom. This essay will focus on the first movement of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony and contemporary criticisms of the work to better understand both Mahler’s music and the environment in which he worked.

Alternative Therapeutic Mechanisms Of Novel Phenoxyalkyl Pyridinium Oximes To Treat Organophosphorus Compounds, Royce Harrison Nichols Aug 2019

Alternative Therapeutic Mechanisms Of Novel Phenoxyalkyl Pyridinium Oximes To Treat Organophosphorus Compounds, Royce Harrison Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

Organophosphates (OPs), such as nerve agents and insecticides, potently inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Oximes, such as the currently FDA approved oxime 2-PAM, remove the OP from the inhibited enzyme. 2-PAM is effective against select OPs and cannot effectively pass the blood-brain barrier to attenuate OP induced CNS damage. Our laboratory has synthesized a series of substituted phenoxyalkyl pyridinium oximes (Patent number: 9,227,937) that have demonstrated increased survival rates compared to 2-PAM. This research investigated 1) in vitro oxime reactivation of rat, human, and guinea pig serum BChE after inhibition by nerve agent and insecticidal OPs; 2) in vitro determination of reactivation …

The Future Of War: Cyber-Attacks And Aggression In International Law, Jamie Hogan Aug 2019

The Future Of War: Cyber-Attacks And Aggression In International Law, Jamie Hogan

University Honors Theses

Cyber-attacks are becoming more advanced, and more dangerous, but can these simple lines of code be considered acts of war? My research looks at cyber-attacks through international law framework regarding jus ad bellum, the resort to war. After looking at cyber-attacks through this lens, it is possible to declare certain types of cyber-attacks as acts of aggression, and ultimately allow states to invoke their right of self-defense in response to these attacks. My research will then address the need for international law regulating these new weapons of war.
