Branding As Soft Power: How Canada’S International Image Renders Hard Borders Pliable, Dael Vasquez
Branding As Soft Power: How Canada’S International Image Renders Hard Borders Pliable, Dael Vasquez
Undergraduate Review
Being neither a hegemonic force nor a developing nation, Canada’s classification as a “middle power” requires its cooperation with other state actors as it otherwise lacks the necessary means to care for itself in isolation (Bickerton and Gagnon 2014). For Canada, producing and maintaining a successful international brand is paramount to operating effectively within the ambit of soft power. Delving deeper into Canada’s soft-power strategies, this article analyzes how Canada employs its economic and diplomatic arsenal to develop a reputable brand, using it to influence nations across the world and advance its policy agenda. More specifically, this article assesses the …
Ladylike: The Necessity And Neglect Of Camp Followers In The Continental Army, Emma Ward
Ladylike: The Necessity And Neglect Of Camp Followers In The Continental Army, Emma Ward
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The contributions of female camp followers to the Continental Army are often overlooked in the study of the American Revolution. The lower-class women who followed the army performed services absolutely necessary for its operation and created a vital support network for the fledgling army that could not care for its own needs. Camp followers were therefore integral to the success of the American Revolution, but they rarely receive due credit for their contributions because they acted outside the bounds of eighteenth-century feminine values.
The intent for this thesis is to pull camp followers out of the footnotes of history and …
From The Volga To The Mississippi: African Americans And The Soviet Experiment, Daniel Candee
From The Volga To The Mississippi: African Americans And The Soviet Experiment, Daniel Candee
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This thesis investigates the role of African American Communists in the struggle for Black liberation during the interwar period. Making a vital intervention into the field, this work attempts to debunk the harmful Cold-War stereotype of African American Communists as “puppets of Moscow” while simultaneously engaging critically with the relationship between Black liberation and international Communism. Drawing on a vast array of secondary and archival sources, this work charts a course between a vision of the Comintern as an avenging anti-colonial angel, and a cynical force disinterested in Black Liberation.
Tracing the developing relationship between Black intellectuals and the Comintern …
Editor's Commentary: A Bathythermograph, Kenneth H. Brink
Editor's Commentary: A Bathythermograph, Kenneth H. Brink
Journal of Marine Research
In this classic, Athelstan Spilhaus reports on his progress on a prototype of the mechanical bathythermograph, a project that C.-G. Rossby encouraged him to pursue. Although now most often seen in museums or on movie sets (they look a bit like rockets), bathythermographs were extremely influential from the later 1930s into the 1950s. These remarkable, durable instruments allowed continuous traces of temperature versus depth (previously measured as bottle temperatures at typically 50-m separations), and so opened up an entirely new vision of what ocean thermal structure actually looks like. Spilhaus further provides some actual data...

International Humanitarian Law In Hanbali School Of Jurisprudence (A Comparative Jurisprudential Study), Mahdi Bin Abdul-Karim Al-Sawti
Al-miʿyār
This study deals with a branch of public international law, which is international humanitarian law. It aims to compare it with what is stipulated by the Hanbali school of jurisprudence regarding protecting the victims of armed conflicts and restricting the right of the parties to the conflict to choose the means and methods of warfare. The key topics of this study is protecting people and their property, then limiting the means and methods of warfare. The study aims to highlight the commonalities between the Hanbali school of jurisprudence and international humanitarian law regarding these topics. Concerning the method adopted in …
The Political Economy Of Sustainable Peacebuilding In Northern Ireland, Ireoluwatomi Oloke, Sean Byrne
The Political Economy Of Sustainable Peacebuilding In Northern Ireland, Ireoluwatomi Oloke, Sean Byrne
International Journal of Peace Studies
This work examines the role equitable economic development plays in ensuring the sustainability of peacebuilding processes. In so doing, it illuminates how economic inequality in a conflict-affected region can intensify unrest and distrust within and between communities. This paper begins by highlighting the context of the Northern Ireland conflict and its historical roots. Next, we explore how socioeconomic and political inequality contributes to the emergence and sustenance of varying levels of conflict. We also consider the importance of addressing these inequalities as an essential part of peacebuilding and development approaches that seek to be sustainable. The paper’s final section outlines …
Deserted Villages: Perspectives From The Eastern Mediterranean, Rebecca M. Seifried, Deborah E. Brown Stewart
Deserted Villages: Perspectives From The Eastern Mediterranean, Rebecca M. Seifried, Deborah E. Brown Stewart
Digital Press Books
Deserted Villages: Perspectives from the Eastern Mediterranean is a collection of case studies examining the abandonment of rural settlements over the past millennium and a half, focusing on modern-day Greece with contributions from Turkey and the United States. Unlike other parts of the world, where deserted villages have benefited from decades of meticulous archaeological research, in the eastern Mediterranean better-known ancient sites have often overshadowed the nearby remains of more recently abandoned settlements. Yet as the papers in this volume show, the tide is finally turning toward a more engaged, multidisciplinary, and anthropologically informed archaeology of medieval and post-medieval rural …

5 Axis 3d Printer, Brian Dubois, Sarah Pudlo, Anthony White
Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
The following report is an overview of the Team 19H: Extra Dimensions project, a 5-Axis 3-D printer, produced over the Fall `20 and Spring `21. The project was presented by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), located in Newport, Rhode Island, and is sponsored by Nathan Wiebe. The problem is de ned as the design and construction of a 3D printer with two additional axes of rotation while staying within the given budget. Conventional 3D printers rely on support material while printing and lack the ability to produce complex geometries. Adding the additional axes can improve 3D printing by eliminating …

Expulsion Of A Payload By Implosive Trigger, Ryan O'Neil, Sean Walker, Jose Argueta, Ryker Meinel
Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
The goal of this project was to create a system in which a cylindrical body is expelled from an outer tube by means of explosion or implosion. The system uses the implosion as a trigger for the expulsion of the cylindrical body without the use of a power source as the use of the system designed in this project is in case of power loss or failure. The cylindrical body is to be of neutral buoyancy, and it is to be cleared out of the outer tube entirely. These objectives were achieved in this design process. The trigger used in …
Methodology For The Deployment Of Small Payloads From A Host Underwater Vehicle, Brian Ross, Michael Feehan, Connor Goldstein, Ian Fitzgerald
Methodology For The Deployment Of Small Payloads From A Host Underwater Vehicle, Brian Ross, Michael Feehan, Connor Goldstein, Ian Fitzgerald
Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
Team 16 has sought the task of assisting the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in devising a novel solution regarding the methodology for the deployment of small payloads from a host unmanned underwater vehicle. This task is to be achieved without compromising the host's reliability and functionality with its deployment method approach. Unmanned underwater exploration capabilities introduce new avenues of understanding for the world below the surface. An au- tonomous unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) can house scientific instruments, other vessels, and various payloads allowing access to remote or otherwise di cult to access locations. Team 16 has developed a novel …

Uuv Stowage Container, Kevin Cabral, Connery Cannon, Chris Hinterneder, Cynthia Reid
Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
The U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) tasked the team with developing a stowage solution for Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) that works independently from the diameter of the UUV. This is a capability that the current marketplace does not allow as all of the current designs in use are uniquely designed for UUVs with a specified diameter. The team generated and analyzed a total of 120 design concepts before settling on the best possible design. This design stores the UUV within the V formed from an M-shaped structure. The UUV would lay on four urethane strips and would be tied …

Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
The Naval Undersea Warfare Center sponsored team 13’s mechanical engineering capstone project. The task given to the team was the recovery of a cylindrical body into a cylinder tube that is twice the diameter. After our initial meet with our sponsor, Vadim Gurevich, the team was presented with designing a system to recover a UUV into the launch tube of a submarine. After performing research, designs were developed by each team member. These designs were analysed and compared by the team and a system was conceptualized that consists of a robotic arm mounted inside a hollowed out torpedo tube that …

Launching Small Payloads From A Large Launch Tube, Kyle Poland, Nicholas Kopsick, Ryan Santosuosso, Emily Furtado
Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
The project that was tasked to the group involved designing a method for a system that will be capable of selectively launching small diameter payloads from a large diameter tube, as well as being fully removable and does not require any modifications to the existing launch tube or payloads themselves. The project was presented to Team 14 by NUWC (The Naval Undersea Warfare Center) with very open ended parameters allowing the team to have significant creative freedom in order to use different engineering principles to come up with a viable design to solve the problem. Since this is a problem …

Recovery Of A Cylindrical Body Into An Outer Tube, David Acciardo, Jacob Doherty, Gianni Figueroa, Joshua Kang
Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
The U.S. Navy lacks the ability for reliable and consistent undersea vehicle recovery. During missions and tests concerning unmanned undersea vehicles (UUV) and or remote operated undersea vehicles (ROUV), the standard retrieval process for such vehicles involves an expensive, time consuming, and highly coordinated operation carried out by humans. Conventional retrieval methods usually involve a surface vessel crew, a team of highly trained-professional divers, and a dockside command crew to ensure that the entire operation is carried out safely and according to plan. Today, it is of particular interest to explore capabilities pertaining to the recovery of a cylindrical body …

Empire And Catastrophe: Decolonization And Environmental Disaster In North Africa And Mediterranean France Since 1954, Spencer D. Segalla
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Empire and Catastrophe examines natural and anthropogenic disasters during the years of decolonization in Algeria, Morocco, and France and explores how environmental catastrophes both shaped and were shaped by struggles over the dissolution of France’s empire in North Africa. Four disasters make up the core of the book: the 1954 earthquake in Algeria’s Chélif Valley, just weeks before the onset of the Algerian Revolution; a mass poisoning in Morocco in 1959 caused by toxic substances from an American military base; the 1959 Malpasset Dam collapse in Fréjus, France, which devastated the town’s Algerian immigrant community but which was blamed on …

A Civil Society: The Public Space Of Freemason Women In France, 1744–1944, James Smith Allen
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
A Civil Society explores the struggle to initiate women as full participants in the masonic brotherhood that shared in the rise of France’s civil society and its “civic morality” on behalf of women’s rights. As a vital component of the third sector during France’s modernization, freemasonry empowered women in complex social networks, contributing to a more liberal republic, a more open society, and a more engaged public culture.
James Smith Allen shows that although women initially met with stiff resistance, their induction into the brotherhood was a significant step in the development of French civil society, including the promotion of …

"Our Women Are Made Of The Right Stuff": Gender, Politics, And Conflict In Civil War West Virginia, Amanda Romain Shaver
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
“’Our Women Are Made of the Right Stuff:’ Gender, Politics, and Conflict in Civil War West Virginia” examines the lives and contributions of white West Virginia women and argues that they were not merely victims of the war, but dynamic participants whose opinions were influential and whose actions determined the ability of both the Union and Confederate armies to wage war in Appalachia. Striking a balance between the antebellum standards of “True Womanhood” and the emerging ideals of the women’s rights movement, West Virginia women became politically engaged in both the statehood movement and the Civil War. They transformed their …

An Emergent Legionnaires' Disease Syndemic: Water Supply Systems, Infrastructural Violence, And Afflicted Lives In The South Bronx, Ny, Eduardo Piqueiras
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation examines how contemporary approaches to Legionnaires’ disease (LD) narrowly view it as a biomedical entity that obscures critical moral, temporal, and contextual dimensions creating gaps in how LD “cases” are defined and mitigated. Those who receive an LD diagnosis experience many unique challenges (e.g., personal, existential, community-based, and environmental) yet little is known about how this group of individuals experience recovery and attach meaning to their individual experiences. Using an anthropological lens of illness and recovery and a syndemics view of infrastructural violence this study examines those inadequately addressed multiple dimensions which limit our ability to confront the …

Link prediction in the domain of scientific collaborative networks refers to exploring and determining whether a connection between two entities in an academic network may emerge in the future. This study aims to analyze the relevance of academic collaborations and identify the factors that drive co-author relationships in a heterogeneous bibliographic network. Using topological, semantic, and graph representation learning techniques, we measure the authors' similarities w.r.t their structural and publication data to identify the reasons that promote co-authorships. Experimental results show that the proposed approach successfully infer the co-author links by identifying authors with similar research interests. Such a system …
