U.S. International Trade And National Security In The Trump Era: Mercantilism, Liberalism, Or Economic Nationalism?, Brett D. Barkey Jan 2021

U.S. International Trade And National Security In The Trump Era: Mercantilism, Liberalism, Or Economic Nationalism?, Brett D. Barkey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study will explore the Trump administration’s views of national security as expressed through its international trade policy and ask whether the U.S. is now a mercantilist, a liberal, or an economically nationalist nation. This study will define mercantilism, liberalism and economic nationalism turning for assistance to the writings of Alexander Hamilton, Adam Smith, and Friedrich List.

The study will then explore how those concepts may have been revealed in America’s international trade policy as the U.S. navigated the economic and national security events of the 20th century, and on to 2016 as President-elect Trump prepared to take office. Next …

Shapes Of Commitment: Forms Of State Support To Nonviolent Mass Resistance, Maria A. Lotito Jan 2021

Shapes Of Commitment: Forms Of State Support To Nonviolent Mass Resistance, Maria A. Lotito

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nonviolent mass movements are an important and increasingly ubiquitous element of interstate politics in the 21st century. Diverse states - democratic, autocratic, rich, and developing – all have supported movements in some form. Explaining the convergence of such state actors on support for usually pro-democratic mass resistance challenges our existing scholarly frameworks. Using a new dataset, I reconcile the differing explanations of foreign assistance to movements that political science would offer with deep descriptive analysis pursued inductively. First, I propose a conceptual foundation for external support, couching an individual state’s support as the manifestation of an outcome-oriented foreign policy and …

Atomic Anxiety And The Interstate, Andrew Oidtman Jan 2021

Atomic Anxiety And The Interstate, Andrew Oidtman

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

The National Interstate and Defense Highways Act of 1956 was a much needed piece of legislation that provided the nation an integrated interstate system while also quelling the atomic anxiety that was rampant during the early years of the atomic age. Atomic and communist anxiety was the lynchpin that allowed for interstate legislation to garner support from the American people and federal government. The connection between the interstate system and civilian defense first adopted by President Eisenhower in 1955 as a serious matter accomplished two important tasks. It allowed for the American people to accept increased taxes and allowed the …

Protecting Cultural Heritage By Recourse To International Environmental Law: Chinese Stances On Faultless State Liability, Riccardo Vecellio Segate Jan 2021

Protecting Cultural Heritage By Recourse To International Environmental Law: Chinese Stances On Faultless State Liability, Riccardo Vecellio Segate

UC Law Environmental Journal

Several international policy documents define the environment as made of “natural heritage” and “cultural heritage” together, along the lines of concepts such as “biosphere” or “ecosystem” which have been introduced relatively recently to define the complexity of humanenvironment interactions. Nevertheless, distinguishing natural heritage from the cultural one helps analyse situations where damage inflicted to the former negatively impacts the latter. In fact, cultural heritage sits under siege worldwide due to polluting activities and environmental degradation, which are causing irreparable damage to—or even the disappearance of— valuable expressions of civilisations’ legacy. Most damages are transboundary, thereby calling into question bilateral forms …

A Reexamination Of Deborah As Prophet And Judge, Brandy Scritchfield Jan 2021

A Reexamination Of Deborah As Prophet And Judge, Brandy Scritchfield

CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses

This study aims to set aside gender concerns related to Deborah and the interpretation of Judges 4–5 in order to determine if a clearer portrait emerges of Deborah as a prophet, a judge, or both without gender issues obscuring the picture. Chapter 1 provides a representative summary of Deborah’s interpretive history, which establishes how gender has been historically and incorrectly used as the primary interpretive key for understanding Deborah and other key parts of Judg 4–5. Chapter 2 discusses Deborah’s role as a judge and determines the text supports identifying her with this title, and chapter 3 does the same …

A Lost Cause Renewed: Quebec, The Civil War, And Canadian Confederation, Deitrich Wahl Jan 2021

A Lost Cause Renewed: Quebec, The Civil War, And Canadian Confederation, Deitrich Wahl

Undergraduate Review

Discussion surrounding Canadian Confederation often centers around whether the Dominion of Canada was built on an act or a pact. There are valid points to be made for each argument, but it just may be that both are incomplete. The act or pact debate often fails to fully consider the unique experience of French Canadians in the years leading up to Confederation in 1867, which means that a third argument has largely been overlooked. For French Canadians, the years leading up to the passage of the British North America Act of 1867 saw a renewal of the Conquest and revival …

The Trajectory Of Male Homosexuality In Nazism, Goral Bhatt Jan 2021

The Trajectory Of Male Homosexuality In Nazism, Goral Bhatt

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Nazism redefined gender and sexual politics for society during the twentieth century, which determined the trajectory of male homosexuality under the Third Reich. While the party did not actively promote homosexuality, early Nazism valued hypermasculinity and homosocial relationships. Right-wing veterans of the First World War were attracted to the Nazi paramilitary unit, Sturmabteilung (SA), led by Ernst Röhm, a well-known gay man. The SA leaders promoted close male bonds among the members, which led to homoerotic relationships. If homoerotism was permitted within the early Nazi Party, why was there a steady decline in the treatment of gay men under the …

Human (In)Security And Psychological Well-Being In Palestinian Children Living Amidst Military Violence: A Qualitative Participatory Research Using Interactive Maps, Guido Veronese, Frederica Cavazzoni, Alec Fiorini, Hala Shoman, Cindy A. Sousa

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Background

Research has widely evidenced the effects of war and political violence on the functioning of children, with a great accord in diagnosing children's psychological burdens related to their exposure to violence. Yet, within this literature, the influence of the chronic sense of insecurity on their psychological functioning during and after hostilities remains unexplored.

Methods

The present study aimed at exploring interrelated relationships between the perceived insecurity and the children's psychological well-being and their adjustment to trauma. Based on drawings and walk-along interviews with 75 Palestinian children, residents of both the West Bank and Gaza Strip, we offer an analysis …

Demythicizing The Lamanites’ “Skin Of Blackness”, Gerrit M. Steenblik Jan 2021

Demythicizing The Lamanites’ “Skin Of Blackness”, Gerrit M. Steenblik

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Racial bias is antithetical to the Book of Mormon’s cardinal purpose: to proclaim the infinite grandeur of the atonement of Jesus Christ. The book teaches that the Lord welcomes and redeems the entire human family, “black and white, bond and free” — people of all hues from ebony to ivory. Critical thinkers have struggled to reconcile this leitmotif with the book’s mention of a “skin of blackness” that was “set upon” some of Lehi’s descendants. Earlier apologetics for that “mark” have been rooted in Old World texts and traditions. However, within the last twenty years, Mesoamerican archaeologists, anthropologists, and ethnohistorians …

If God Does Not Exist, Is Everything Permitted?, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2021

If God Does Not Exist, Is Everything Permitted?, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Can people be good without believing in God? Obviously, yes. They can. Is atheistic naturalism capable of supplying a foundation for morality? That is a separate question, to which more than a few theists have answered No. However, a relatively new book by a very prominent student of religion and society suggests otherwise. A rational morality can, it argues, be founded upon atheistic naturalism — but it will necessarily be a modest and quite limited one, lacking universal scope and without a belief in human rights as objective “moral facts.”

Memorialization Of Children In War In Serbia, Bosnia And Herzegovina, And Kosovo, Ana Gvozdic Jan 2021

Memorialization Of Children In War In Serbia, Bosnia And Herzegovina, And Kosovo, Ana Gvozdic

International Studies Honors Projects

Can remembering the tragic fate of children in war help overcome the divisive narratives of the past in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo? This paper addresses this question by examining efforts to commemorate children in war in these countries through monuments, exhibitions, and other creative formats, including a video and a theatrical performance. Based on in-depth, qualitative interviews with civil society representatives behind these initiatives, and those familiar with them, I argue that efforts to commemorate children in war can both consolidate and challenge divisive victimization narratives. When memorialization efforts go beyond victimization, their emphasis on children in war …

Seapower, Geostrategic Relations, And Islandness: The World War Ii Destroyers For Bases Deal, Colin Flint Jan 2021

Seapower, Geostrategic Relations, And Islandness: The World War Ii Destroyers For Bases Deal, Colin Flint

Political Science Faculty Publications

The Destroyers for Bases deal was signed on March 27, 1941, and transferred fifty aging US destroyers to Great Britain in exchange for 99-year leases of bases on the British controlled islands of Newfoundland, Bermuda, Trinidad, Jamaica, Antigua, St. Lucia, the Bahamas, and one in British Guiana. The deal highlights how US strategic planners came to see the value of the islands because of their relationality. Three forms of relationality are discussed: the land/sea dialectic; spatial connectivity; and the changing geopolitical balance of power. Relationality is a factor in four strategic calculations: other islands; other continents; other oceans; and the …

Effects Of Long-Term Deep-Sea Immersion On The Implosion And Explosion Of Hollow Composite Cylinders, Tyler Chu Jan 2021

Effects Of Long-Term Deep-Sea Immersion On The Implosion And Explosion Of Hollow Composite Cylinders, Tyler Chu

Open Access Master's Theses

The effects of long-term exposure to a sea-floor depth ocean environment on the mechanical behavior of carbon-fiber / epoxy (CFE) continuous filament-wound composite tubes were investigated experimentally. Using a novel high pressure accelerated aging vessel and the Arrhenius relationship for water diffusion into a polymer matrix composite, the acceleration factor was determined to be approximately 21.5; that is one day of aging in lab at 70°C represents 21.5 days of real life service at 3°C. Specimens were aged for 0, 9, and 24 days which represent 0, 193.5, and 516 days of service. The specimens were sealed and half were …

Data Privacy & National Security: A Rubik’S Cube Of Challenges And Opportunities That Are Inextricably Linked, April Falcon Doss

Duquesne Law Review

Traditionally, issues relating to information privacy have been viewed in a set of distinct, and not always helpful, stovepipes—or, as my former government colleagues often said, tongue-in-cheek, in other contexts—separate “cylinders of excellence.” Thanks to the convergence of technologies and information, the once-separate realms of personal data privacy, consumer protection, and national security are increasingly interconnected. As Congress and national policymakers consider proposals for federal data privacy legislation, regulation of social media platforms, and how to prevent abuses of foreign intelligence and homeland security powers, they should be examining each of these challenges in light of the others, actively looking …

Hugh Nibley Observed, Jeffren M. Bradshaw, Shirly S. Ricks, Stephen T. Whitlock

Interpreter Foundation Books

Our purpose in creating this volume is twofold. For readers who are already familiar with the life and work of Hugh Nibley, we hope this book will provide a more full account of the story behind the writings—their biographical, historical, literary, and scholarly contexts. For the many more who have never read anything by him, we hope that the fascinating, mostly secondhand accounts in this book will provide encouragement for them to read Nibley’s own works. To read these works is to understand the man — and to better understand the gospel of Jesus Christ and the cause of his …

Black Women's Suffrage, The Nineteenth Amendment, And The Duality Of A Movement, Danielle M. Conway Jan 2021

Black Women's Suffrage, The Nineteenth Amendment, And The Duality Of A Movement, Danielle M. Conway

Faculty Scholarly Works

America is at an unprecedented time with self-determination for Black women, and this phase of the movement is reverberating throughout this nation and around the world. There is no confusion for those who identify as Black women that this movement is perpetual, dating back to the enslavement of Black people in America by act and by law. One need only look to the intersecting crises of 2020 to discern the reality of Black women’s—and by extension the Black community and by further extension individuals and groups marginalized, subordinated, and oppressed by white patriarchy—perpetual struggle for civil and human rights.
