Unacceptable Agency Part I Of The Problem Of An Unloving World, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer
Unacceptable Agency Part I Of The Problem Of An Unloving World, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer
Faculty Scholarship
The Earth System Governance Project is the largest scholarly body in the world devoted to articulating governance of the Earth’s systems. It recently published a “Harvesting Initiative” looking back on the first iteration of its Scientific Plan. This paper contributes to the decolonial and constructive critique of the theory of agency in that Initiative and argues that it displays “fragmentary coloniality” especially around problematic authority relations in governance. By turning to work on “worlding,” the paper argues for radicalizing questions of authority, leading us to focus not on agency but on moral relationships—work for a sequel to this paper.

Guþcwen And Ides Ellenrof – The Old English Warrior Woman As Role Model For Female Characters In Tolkien’S Works, Flora Sophie Lemburg
Journal of Tolkien Research
This paper examines the connection between the motif of the Old English warrior woman and Tolkien’s female characters. It provides a critique of Leslie Donovan’s paper “The valkyrie reflex in J. R. R. Tolkien´s The Lord of the Rings: Galadriel, Shelob, Éowyn and Arwen” and contrasts previous research on Tolkien’s female characters focussed either on gender-studies or on a “Germanic” influence with a more direct and specific connection between Medieval English and his works. The motif of the Old English warrior woman is established by investigating the female characters Judith, Elene, and Juliana from the Old English poems Judith, …
The Catalyst For Contemporary Jihad: The Religious Leaders And Their Strategies, Ronnie Dewitt
The Catalyst For Contemporary Jihad: The Religious Leaders And Their Strategies, Ronnie Dewitt
Interdisciplinary Studies
This dissertation provides insight in the methodologies utilized by leaders of jihadist terrorist organizations who create a dedicated following in their pursuit of establishing a global caliphate. The research in this project illustrates a linkage from these charismatic leaders to the sacred edicts of the Koran, the Hadith, the Sunna, Sharia (Islamic jurisprudence), and the prophet Muhammad. Moreover, it bears out a unique perspective in academic national security studies which delves deeper than similar published works regarding subject matter focused on both violent and stealth jihad (also known as the non-violent usurpation of non-Islamic cultures). These subjects are discussed in …
The Plea Of Necessity: An Oft Overlooked Response Option To Hostile Cyber Operations, Louise Arimatsu, Michael N. Schmitt
The Plea Of Necessity: An Oft Overlooked Response Option To Hostile Cyber Operations, Louise Arimatsu, Michael N. Schmitt
International Law Studies
States are increasingly focused on the measures—cyber or otherwise—that they can take in response to hostile cyber operations. Although cyber operations are usually responded to with acts of “retorsion” (acts that are lawful, although unfriendly), international law recognizes other self-help mechanisms that allow for more robust responses. In the cyber context, most attention has focused on countermeasures and self-defense. Yet, both are subject to various limitations that constrain their availability.
This article examines a further option, the so-called “plea of necessity.” It allows States to respond to a hostile cyber operation when the action taken would otherwise be unlawful but …

Possibility Of The Applications Of Drone In Library Functions And Services In India, Patit Paban Santra, Anupam Bhowmick, Sibsankar Jana
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Purpose: The study is emphasized on prospects of the applications of drones also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology in library services and related functions of different sections of the library. One of the major purposes of this study is to provide doorstep services to users without physical access to the library.
Design/methodology/approach: This study designed the whole drone library system through a block diagram (Figure-1), which properly explained the works related to different sections of a library as well as the factions related to the users’ perspective. It also stated different technical requirements for applying drones in library …

The End Of The World According To Q, Francisco G. Mendoza Iii
The End Of The World According To Q, Francisco G. Mendoza Iii
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
The expansion of information networks and of paranoia in the West following the turn of the new century in 2000 created the nesting ground for a new politically focused conspiracy movement in QAnon which, like many before it, conceives of their liberation in the either explicit or implicit terms of the end of the world as they know it. QAnon is broadly maligned by popular conceptions as of late, and that same popular conception has accused their prophetic predictions of being wrong over the years, and yet the movement continues on with a strong base of support. Since its formal …
Liberalism, Settlement, Sacrifice: Towards A Genealogy Of Sacrificial Politics, Marshall Scheider, Adam Culver
Liberalism, Settlement, Sacrifice: Towards A Genealogy Of Sacrificial Politics, Marshall Scheider, Adam Culver
McNair Symposium
In recent years, political theorists have begun to explore the sacrificial dimensions of liberalism and neoliberalism in the global North. Little of this work, however, grapples with the ways settler colonialism informs contemporary political sacrifice or conceptions of the sacrificial. This paper traces a genealogy of contemporary political sacrifice through the archive of early British colonialism in North America. When theorists ignore this archive, they do more than render colonization mute: they also fail to apprehend what I term political sacrifice’s differential function—the mechanism by which sacrifice’s burdens fall on subordinated groups while its benefits accrue to the socially, politically, …

China’S Container Missile Deployments Could Violate The Law Of Naval Warfare, Raul (Pete) Pedrozo
China’S Container Missile Deployments Could Violate The Law Of Naval Warfare, Raul (Pete) Pedrozo
International Law Studies
China is reportedly developing long-range cruise missiles that can be fired from standard shipping containers loaded on merchant vessels. China is also converting heavy-lift civilian ships and roll-on roll-off (RORO) ferries to serve as de facto amphibious assault ships to support People’s Liberation Army (PLA) amphibious operations. While none of these activities are illegal per se, they do raise potential concerns under the law of naval warfare. Only warships can engage in offensive belligerent rights during an international armed conflict. Using merchant vessels to engage in belligerent rights would violate international law unless China first converts the vessels into warships …

The New American Dream: Neoliberal Transformation As Character Development In Schitt’S Creek, William Joseph Sipe
The New American Dream: Neoliberal Transformation As Character Development In Schitt’S Creek, William Joseph Sipe
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This article contextualizes the popular sitcom Schitt’s Creek within an era of unprecedented economic inequality and growing distain for the ultrawealthy. Via its over-the-top and self-effacing humor, the program invites audiences to discipline the Rose family for their former life of leisure and ultimately celebrate as each character is transformed into an ideal neoliberal subject via economic precarity and entrepreneurism. Through an analysis of the show’s 6 seasons, this essay articulates how the myth of the American Dream has adapted to neoliberal ideology that prizes precarity as a state of possibility and rejects leisure as laziness. Schitt’s Creek is emblematic …

Distributed Space Systems (DSS) are an emerging class of mission designs that enable new scientific and commercial opportunities. In order to enable those new opportunities, these systems will need to have significantly expanded autonomous capabilities compared to their single-spacecraft predecessors. In this paper, we present Distributed Spacecraft Autonomy (DSA) project, a payload on NASA’s Starling spacecraft experiment. We first describe a step-by-step process for characterizing what features are needed in an autonomous DSS, and show how this process applied to DSA. We then describe the Starling mission, a four-spacecraft swarm hosting multiple DSS payloads. We then describe DSA, which will …

Machiavelli, Lincoln, And The Art Of Princely Procrastination, Andrew L. Carranco
Machiavelli, Lincoln, And The Art Of Princely Procrastination, Andrew L. Carranco
Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the phenomenon of procrastination in decision making. In certain circumstances, procrastinating a decision can yield better results in the long term. This paper looks at procrastination and decision making from the point of view of Von Clausewitz and Machiavelli and uses Abraham Lincoln as an example of efficient use of procrastination in decision making. Von Clausewitz looks to find action at the strongest point. The strongest point may not come for some time in the future and thus encourages procrastination. Machiavelli uses procrastination as an offensive capability in decision-making. Through prudence, virtù, and fortune, a prince can …
Religious Women And Peacebuilding During The Northern Ireland ‘Troubles’, Dianne Kirby
Religious Women And Peacebuilding During The Northern Ireland ‘Troubles’, Dianne Kirby
The Journal of Social Encounters
The focus of this essay is on the critical and various roles, still largely unrecognised, played by religious women during the conflict in Northern Ireland. Working at the margins of society rather than in the corridors of power, they made important contributions to peace-building that ranged from grass-roots activism to secret talks. As well as contributing to the crucial work of community groups, educating the young and tending to the old, religious women established innovative and independent organisations offering succour and support to victims of the ‘Troubles’. Motivated by faith, they adhered to a value system that eschewed the violence, …
The Future Of Weapons Of Mass Destruction, Gavin Burn, Josiah Probst, Quintin Lemire
The Future Of Weapons Of Mass Destruction, Gavin Burn, Josiah Probst, Quintin Lemire
Student Papers in Public Policy
Since the first use of modern chemical weapons in World War I, Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) have improved drastically in lethality and longevity. These advances in weapons production, coupled with civilian industries that can be rapidly converted to produce these weapons, provide a serious concern to the future of global security. For these reasons, further action is needed by stakeholders, specifically the United Nations (UN) and global superpowers, to curtail the development, proliferation, and WMDs utilization, for both domestic and international peace and prosperity. Following are two ways the future security of WMDs can be addressed by the aforementioned …

Lethal Autonomous Weapons And Human-In-The-Chain, Ansh Desai, Jacob Harmon, Tanya Khandelwal, Kyle Vandewalle
Student Papers in Public Policy
Lethal autonomous weapon systems, or LAWS, are weapons that can select a target with the help of sensors and artificial intelligence and attack with little to no human intervention [1]. There are several economic, political, and social benefits to LAWS, but also there are risks and costs. Currently, there are no laws regulating these weapon systems, but most stakeholders are lobbying for a change in policy. This policy brief discusses three different potential states of policies: (1) no new policies to regulate LAWs, (2) a complete ban of LAWs, and (3) strict regulations regarding the use of LAWs. We recommend …
The Use Of Social Media By Terrorists, Jan Balk, Benjamin Clarke, Charles Stembler
The Use Of Social Media By Terrorists, Jan Balk, Benjamin Clarke, Charles Stembler
Student Papers in Public Policy
With the rise of digital technology, particularly social media, terrorist groups have gained a valuable new tool for furthering their goals. Terrorist propaganda, for the purposes of this brief, is defined as any video, picture, post, or any other form of media posted to the internet to further the cause of the terrorist organization, such as recruitment or communication with followers around the world. The manipulation of technology by non-state actors is not a new phenomenon; however, social media and other new digital technologies have proven a valuable resource for many terrorist organizations. Not only have terrorist groups been adept …
Kinetic Spectroscopic Quantification Of Biomarkers In Practical Samples, Weiyu Peng
Kinetic Spectroscopic Quantification Of Biomarkers In Practical Samples, Weiyu Peng
Theses and Dissertations
Kinetic spectroscopic quantification refers to a subset of chromogenic (CG) and fluorogenic (FG) assays that deduce analyte concentration based on the UV-vis or fluorescence signal obtained during the CG/FG reaction processes. Existing kinetic spectroscopic quantification are based predominantly on reactions that can be approximated as a first-order process. Presented in this thesis is the kinetic spectroscopic quantification that uses higher order CG/FG reactions where the overall reaction can be approximated as combination of two sequential first-order processes. Included in chapter one is the theoretical model and several proof-of-concept applications. This model analyte is malondialdehyde (MDA), a lipid peroxidation biomarker of …

Traditional Domestic Architecture In Al-Baha Region, Renad M. Baabdullah
Effat Undergraduate Research Journal
Al-Baha region embraces rich area of inherited Saudi traditional architecture that is highly threatened of perishing, and poorly documented, including a UNESCO world heritage site at Zee Ain Village. In this research paper, different urban fabric patterns of Al-Baha’s villages, and building techniques of stone houses are explained and analyzed in relation to the thoroughly discussed contextual conditions. The research clarifies how the environmental and sociocultural context shapes traditional domestic units. Preliminary plans and digital models have been developed for case studies that required more precise interpretation; fulfilling the documentary goal, and the interpretive approach of the research.

Faerie Reality In The Spiral Dance By Rodrigo Garcia Y Robertson, Robert Tredray
Faerie Reality In The Spiral Dance By Rodrigo Garcia Y Robertson, Robert Tredray
Mythcon
Garcia y Robertson's The Spiral Dance begins as a historical novel set in the time of the rebellion led by the Earl of Northumberland and the Earl of Westmoreland against Elizabeth I in 1569, told from the point of view of Anne, Countess of Northumberland. It is also an epic or heroic fantasy; besides Lady Anne, two of its main characters are a werewolf named Jock and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Their adventures carry them not only to the highlands of Scotland but to the realm of Faerie. The author's theme is that one must lose all one has before …
