The Evolution Of Hybrid Warfare: Implications For Strategy And The Military Profession, Ilmari Käihkö
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
The concept of hybrid war has evolved from operational-level use of military means and methods in war toward strategic-level use of nonmilitary means in a gray zone below the threshold of war. This article considers this evolution and its implications for strategy and the military profession by contrasting past and current use of the hybrid war concept and raising critical questions for policy and military practitioners.

Drawing on personal experience, the author asks what the current administration can learn from the Clinton administration’s implementation of Presidential Decision Directive 56, examines the real-world application of the directive during the Clinton administration and the pitfalls of its agency-centric successor during the Bush administration, and identifies recurring problems and best practices for successfully responding to current global crises.
Great (Soft) Power Competition: Us And Chinese Efforts In Global Health Engagement, Michael W. Wissemann
Great (Soft) Power Competition: Us And Chinese Efforts In Global Health Engagement, Michael W. Wissemann
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
Global health engagement, an underutilized strategy rooted in the strengths of soft power persuasion, can lead to more military-to-military cooperation training, help establish relationships that can be relied on when crises develop, stabilize fragile states, and deny violent extremist organizations space for recruiting and operations. Examining Chinese efforts worldwide to curry favor and influence and the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this article shows health as a medium is a very compelling and advantageous whole-of-government approach to national security policy concerns.

Spatial Analysis Of Beaked Whale Foraging During Two 12 Khz Multibeam Echosounder Surveys, Hilary Kates Varghese, Kim Lowell, Jennifer L. Miksis-Olds, Nancy Dimarzio, Larry A. Mayer
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
To add to the growing information about the effect of multibeam echosounder (MBES) operation on marine mammals, a study was conducted to assess the spatial foraging effort of Cuvier’s beaked whales during two MBES surveys conducted in January of 2017 and 2019 off of San Clemente Island, California. The MBES surveys took place on the Southern California Antisubmarine Warfare Range (SOAR), which contains an array of 89 hydrophones covering an area of approximately 1800 km2 over which foraging beaked whales were detected. A spatial autocorrelation analysis of foraging effort was conducted using the Moran’s I (global) and the Getis-Ord Gi∗ …
Comparative Microbiome Analysis Of The Funfus Gardening Ant Species Trachymyrmex Arizonensis, Chase D. Rowan
Comparative Microbiome Analysis Of The Funfus Gardening Ant Species Trachymyrmex Arizonensis, Chase D. Rowan
Biology Theses
Fungus-growing ants (Attini: Formicidae) and their fungal cultivars participate in ant-fungus mutualism that share a 50-million-year-old coevolutionary history. Fungal cultures are grown in gardens alongside ants and a diverse collection of microbes that interact with both species in mutualistic, commensal, and antagonistic relationships. These microbes aid in digestion and detoxification of food, provide essential nutrients, help in nest hygiene, and play a dominant role in defense against pathogens and disease. Microbial communities of many model species have been shown to change in a laboratory setting as compared to their natural environment. High-throughput 16s sequencing of the V4 variable region was …

Social Movements In The Information Communication Technology Age: The Case Of Hong Kong, Justin Jin
Social Movements In The Information Communication Technology Age: The Case Of Hong Kong, Justin Jin
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper develops current understandings of social movements by incorporating research on state formation and counterinsurgency, expanding political process theory by introducing the concepts of legibility and capacity. It then considers the changes caused by widespread use of Internet communications technologies (ICTs). The paper conceptualizes state-movement contention as a competition for access to civil society and its resources. Movements and states attempt to maximize their access, otherwise known as capacity, and minimize that of their rival. The legibility of society to either side impacts their success. Success, or lack thereof, determines future capacity. Increased usage of ICTs and digital surveillance …
Russian Peasants In Tolstoy’S War And Peace - Idealized And Instrumentalized, Antonia Seyfarth
Russian Peasants In Tolstoy’S War And Peace - Idealized And Instrumentalized, Antonia Seyfarth
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
In War and Peace, Tolstoy challenges Western European notions of Russian backwardness and ‘barbarity’ through his depiction of the virtuousness, spiritual wisdom, and rich cultural traditions of the common Russian people. This idealized portrayal of Russian peasants and soldiers is essential to Tolstoy’s construction of a Russian national myth that unites members of all social classes behind a shared set of values. However, in turning the Russian peasantry into idealized, oversimplified caricatures that lack individuality, complexity, agency, and the ability for critical thought, Tolstoy reduces these characters to mere instruments that provide morally edifying lessons to Russia’s elites. This imposition …
Operationalizing Culture: Refugees, Migration, And Mental Health In The Wake Of The Vietnam War, Helena Bui
Operationalizing Culture: Refugees, Migration, And Mental Health In The Wake Of The Vietnam War, Helena Bui
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
!e end of the Vietnam War led to the migration of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese refugees to the United States a"er political and economic upheaval. As another result, the refugees’ years of warfare, trauma, death, and injury began to manifest as unprecedented mental health issues that American physicians and researchers sought to understand. In this paper, I argue that American medical professionals— in good faith—operationalized [Vietnamese] culture to help themselves and their colleagues understand the mental health issues of Vietnamese refugees. Yet this operationalization acted as a double-edged sword. Viewing Western mental health discourse through the lens of Vietnamese …
Argo: Cia Influence And American Jingoism, Andrea De Oliveira
Argo: Cia Influence And American Jingoism, Andrea De Oliveira
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
“Argo: CIA Influence and American Jingoism” focuses on the ways in which CIA involvement in the production and publicity of Ben Affleck’s Argo (2012) yielded a biased representation of the Iranian public. Throughout the film, Affleck pictures Iranians as aggressive and deindividualized, spreading the trope of the Middle Eastern fanatic to viewers worldwide. While villainizing the Iranian public, Argo undermines a fraught history of United States intervention in Iran. Although Affleck takes several liberties in cinematizing the Iranian Hostage Crisis, Argo masquerades as a historical authority, peppered with markers of authenticity such as newsreel footage. I argue that the film …
Interwoven Histories: A Chinese Family, A Yale Graduate And The Nanking Massacre, Isabella Yang
Interwoven Histories: A Chinese Family, A Yale Graduate And The Nanking Massacre, Isabella Yang
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Following the fall of Nanjing, the Republic of China’s capital, in December 1937 during World War II, Japanese soldiers conducted a series of atrocities against civilians in the region that lasted for months, infamously known as the Nanking Massacre. This paper takes a microhistorical approach to examining how these atrocities permanently affected civilians’ lives. Relying on oral histories and primary sources at the Yale Divinity Library, it explores two interwoven histories of wartime survivors: one of the Cao family residing just outside Nanjing when the atrocities happened, and another of a Yale graduate named Miner Searle Bates who took advantage …
The Winged Victory: Nike In Ancient Greece, Megan Mayfield
The Winged Victory: Nike In Ancient Greece, Megan Mayfield
Studia Antiqua
The Greek goddess Nike was a popular deity throughout the ancient Greek World. As a symbol of victory, Nike represented triumph within agonistic conflicts. Nike was an important figure in the Greek mind, and while comprehensive studies of who the goddess was and how she was represented through literature and iconography has been conducted, an overview of Nike’s development has not yet been done in English. This paper will follow the development of Nike throughout Greek thought, from her earliest representations and mentions in the Archaic Period through the Hellenistic Era, by focusing on the primary objects and literature sources …

Research On Hybrid Deployment Strategy And Model For Key Position Air-Defense Based On Multi-Weapon Platforms, Jiaqing Wan, Pengfei Wang, Junlin Tang, Zhang Dong, Xinguo Li
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Multi-platform cooperative air-defense is the development direction of air-defense and antimissile warfare, and the hybrid deployment strategy and model are the important research content. Based on the background of key position air-defense research, the deployment strategy, principle and form of multi-platform cooperative air-defense are studied. The operational scenario and operational process of typical air defense are established. The principles, influencing factors and deployment methods of hybrid deployment are studied. A typical hybrid deployment strategy is proposed and a mathematical model is established. It provides support for the multi platform cooperative air defense and key position defense deployment.
The Allocation Of Jamming Resources Based On Double Q-Learning Algorithm, Xingyuan Huang, Yanyi Li
The Allocation Of Jamming Resources Based On Double Q-Learning Algorithm, Xingyuan Huang, Yanyi Li
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In modern warfare, the multifunctional trend of radars, even multiple radars detecting targets together, enhances the anti-jamming capability of radars. However, the traditional jamming system still follows a fixed jamming strategy, and the real-time performance of decision-making facing large numbers of radars is poor. And the cognitive jamming study is urgent. The concept of reinforcement learning is explained and the difference between Q learning algorithm and double Q learning algorithm is compared. The reinforcement learning algorithm is used to establish a model based on cognitive electronic warfare to realize the allocation of radar jamming strategies. The simulation of the …

Assessing The Role Of Cyberbiosecurity In Agriculture: A Case Study, Tiffany Drape, Noah Magerkorth, Anuradha Sen, Joseph J. Simpson, Megan Seibel, Randall Steven Murch, Susan E. Duncan
International Business and Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications
Agriculture has adopted the use of smart technology to help meet growing food demands. This increased automation and associated connectivity increases the risk of farms being targeted by cyber-attacks. Increasing frequency of cybersecurity breaches in many industries illustrates the need for securing our food supply chain. The uniqueness of biological data, the complexity of integration across the food and agricultural system, and the importance of this system to the U.S. bioeconomy and public welfare suggests an urgency as well as unique challenges that are not common across all industries. To identify and address the gaps in awareness and knowledge as …
Transformation Of Current Issues Of Modern Socio-Political Changes, Rustam Djumayev
Transformation Of Current Issues Of Modern Socio-Political Changes, Rustam Djumayev
The Light of Islam
The article provides estimates of the “material standard of living” of the world’s population by periods (life expectancy, the volume of production of consumer goods, services, and products per capita). Many scientists and experts, politicians and, statesmen who have left their mark on world history have thought about the concept of progress. Most of them supported the idea of “progress” only from the bottom up. One described the pinnacle of progress as Chinese communism and, another called it “Western democracy.” This one-sided explanation reflects in the theory of five entities. (primitive, slavery, feudalism, capitalism and, communism or Western democracy). It …
The Case For Banning (And Mandating) Ransomware Insurance, Kyle D. Logue, Adam B. Shniderman
The Case For Banning (And Mandating) Ransomware Insurance, Kyle D. Logue, Adam B. Shniderman
Law & Economics Working Papers
Ransomware attacks are becoming increasingly pervasive and disruptive. Not only are they shutting down (or at least “holding up”) businesses and local governments all around the country, they are disrupting institutions in many sectors of the U.S. economy — from school systems, to medical facilities, to critical elements of the U.S. energy infrastructure as well as the food supply chain. Ransomware attacks are also growing more frequent and the ransom demands more exorbitant. Those ransom payments are increasingly being covered by insurance. That insurance offers coverage for a variety of cyber-related losses, including many of the costs arising out of …
