Formulating An 'Epic Religiosity': The Mahābhārata And Contemporary Hindu Traditions, Frank R. Chappell Oct 2021

Formulating An 'Epic Religiosity': The Mahābhārata And Contemporary Hindu Traditions, Frank R. Chappell

Intermountain West Journal of Religious Studies

The polysemous quality of the Mahābhārata has not only contributed to its timeless popularity across the globe, but also to its evolution as a religious and moral sourcebook for over a millennium. As the "fifth Veda," it continues to prove efficacious in contemporary ethical and spiritual discourses for multiple Hindu traditions in the diaspora. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the reception-history of the epic as an evolving narrative and its applicability to the formulation of contemporary Hindu ethics.

Revisiting Ad Bellum Proportionality: Challenging The Factors Used To Assess It, Yishai Beer Oct 2021

Revisiting Ad Bellum Proportionality: Challenging The Factors Used To Assess It, Yishai Beer

International Law Studies

Traditionally, international law has established a binary distinction between jus ad bellum and jus in bello. The former relates to the right to exercise military force. The latter regulates the conduct of adversaries engaged in an armed conflict. However, the prevailing legal approach doesn't accept this dichotomy. It wants to reduce war's hazards by applying the ad bellum rules, including the proportionality requirement, continuously throughout the conduct of armed conflict. To that end, it has established factors that define the essence of the continuing ad bellum proportionality requirement. This article challenges the near-unanimous consensus regarding these factors. It argues that …

The Long Red Thread : How Democratic Dominance Gave Way To Republican Advantage In Us House Elections, Kyle Kondik Oct 2021

The Long Red Thread : How Democratic Dominance Gave Way To Republican Advantage In Us House Elections, Kyle Kondik

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

An incisive study that shows how Republicans transformed the US House of Representatives into a consistent GOP stronghold—with or without a majority.

Long-term Democratic dominance in the US House of Representatives gave way to a Republican electoral advantage and frequently held majority following the GOP takeover in 1994. Republicans haven’t always held the majority in recent decades, but nationalization, partisan realignment, and the gerrymandering of House seats have contributed to a political climate in which they've had an edge more often than not for nearly thirty years.

The Long Red Thread examines each House election cycle from 1964 to 2020, …

Redeployment Of The German Brest Group Through The English Channel, 11–13 February 1942 (Operation Cerberus), Milan Vego

Naval War College Review

In this redeployment—a nearly unique operation—the Germans were highly successful in both planning and execution, while the British response was incoherent and poorly coordinated and executed, providing a rich trove of operational lessons still valid today.

“An Object Lesson To The Country”—The 1915 Atlantic Fleet Summer Exercise And The U.S. Navy On The Eve Of World War I, Ryan Peeks Oct 2021

“An Object Lesson To The Country”—The 1915 Atlantic Fleet Summer Exercise And The U.S. Navy On The Eve Of World War I, Ryan Peeks

Naval War College Review

This unrealistic summer exercise scenario was designed to embarrass the Secretary of the Navy and force the Wilson administration to expand the Navy, illuminating three aspects of the service on the cusp of America’s entry into war: a rupture in civil-military relations, the use to which the Navy put its German counterpart, and Navy leaders’ assessment of the service after two decades of naval buildup.

The British And The Limitations Of Maritime Maneuver, Geoffrey Till Oct 2021

The British And The Limitations Of Maritime Maneuver, Geoffrey Till

Naval War College Review

Strategists who are turning to maritime maneuver to achieve their ends amid intensifying great-power competition should be aware that the British historical experience shows that—owing to its costs, challenges, and limitations—the approach most often has failed to deliver on its strategic promise.

Trust The Process? Rethinking Procedural Due Process And The President’S Emergency Powers Over The Digital Economy, Jonathan W. Ellison Oct 2021

Trust The Process? Rethinking Procedural Due Process And The President’S Emergency Powers Over The Digital Economy, Jonathan W. Ellison

Duke Law Journal

To protect U.S. user data from foreign threats, presidents have wielded their emergency power to ban transactions with certain technology companies. This emergency power, if unchecked, threatens both the procedural rights of some technology companies and U.S. constitutional structure.

Concerning procedural rights, this Note evaluates existing procedural due process jurisprudence to identify the scope of these protections in the data security context, which remains unexplored in scholarship and judicial opinions. For guidance, this Note looks to cases involving counterterrorist financing and national security reviews of foreign investment, and it concludes that procedural due process protects many technology companies that collect …

Humanizing The Inhumane: The Meaning Of The American Indian Patient-Cancer Care Nurse Relationship, Natalie M. Pool Oct 2021

Humanizing The Inhumane: The Meaning Of The American Indian Patient-Cancer Care Nurse Relationship, Natalie M. Pool

Dissertations

This study described the unique relationships that develop while providing cancer care to AI populations and the underlying meaning that nurses ascribed to these experiences. Methods: This was an interpretive phenomenological study with multiple data collections and analysis. Nine cancer care nurses with a minimum of three years of experience working with AI patients participated by engaging in 2-3 exploratory, open-ended, reflective interviews over a period of nine months. Thematic reduction was completed to explicate the fundamental structures of this particular relationship. I then engaged in extensive reflective writing resulting in a linguistic transformation illuminating the essential meaning for nurses …

For Cause And Countries: Initial, Sustaining, And Combat Motivation In The Royal Air Force Eagle Squadrons, 1940-1942, Timothy Defazio Oct 2021

For Cause And Countries: Initial, Sustaining, And Combat Motivation In The Royal Air Force Eagle Squadrons, 1940-1942, Timothy Defazio

Master's Theses

Before the United States entered the Second World War, 245 American pilots pledged their service to the Royal Air Force (RAF). Organized into 71, 121, and 133 Squadrons, collectively known as the Eagle Squadrons, these foreign volunteers present an intriguing avenue of soldier motivation analysis. Employing the conceptual framework offered by John Lynn and James McPherson, this thesis analyzes three components of the Eagles’ motivation—initial, sustaining, and combat.

Viewed in context, the Eagles’ decision to join a beleaguered air force reflected a commitment to ideological principles, as the desires to defend England and curb German aggression figured largely into their …

In Defense Of Pure Sovereignty In Cyberspace, Kevin Jon Heller Oct 2021

In Defense Of Pure Sovereignty In Cyberspace, Kevin Jon Heller

International Law Studies

States currently endorse three different positions concerning the international wrongfulness of cyber operations that penetrate computer systems located on the territory of another state but do not rise to the level of a use of force or prohibited intervention. The first position is that such low-intensity cyber operations are never wrongful, because sovereignty is a principle of international law, not a primary rule that can be independently violated. The second is that low-intensity cyber operations are always wrongful, because sovereignty is a primary rule of international law that is violated by any non-consensual penetration of a computer system located on …

The Captives Of Florida, Eugene Lyon Oct 2021

The Captives Of Florida, Eugene Lyon

Florida Historical Quarterly

In September 1565, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés of Spain sought out and attacked the Huguenot French in their Florida settlement. When his victory was won, a number of men, women, and children had become captives of the Spanish, while at least two Spaniards were prisoners in the hands of the French. Some of these people possessed noble blood; most were common sailors and soldiers. A few gained a degree of notoriety from their experiences– at least one of the captives was received at the court of Philip II of Spain, while another appeared before the Queen Mother of France. While …

Representation Of Terror And Terrorism In Two Arab Films: Paradise Now (2005) By Hany Abu-Assad And Horses Of God (2012) By Nabil Ayouch, Mustapha Hamil Oct 2021

Representation Of Terror And Terrorism In Two Arab Films: Paradise Now (2005) By Hany Abu-Assad And Horses Of God (2012) By Nabil Ayouch, Mustapha Hamil

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Middle Eastern violence and terrorism are not novel subjects in world cinema, especially American cinema. The Arab or Muslim other in these films is always presented as someone who epitomises a culture of violence, directed mostly against innocent civilians. Against the backdrop of Hollywood’s stereotypical representation of Middle-Easterners as advocate of indiscriminate terror and terrorism, Arab filmmakers have turned in recent years to the representation of terror and religious extremism. Paradise Now (Abu Assad 2005) and Horses of God (Ayouch 2012) address the controversial issue of suicide bombing with the same motivation: to examine the choice of suicide bombing within …
