The research addresses organisational practitioners’ capacity for noticing and responding to fleeting, small gestures and indeterminate impressions that register as bodily sensations in the midst of dynamic circumstances. The thesis explores such experience as occurring in the realm of the liminal - liminality taken up as a quality of experience when vague perceptions are sensed and felt viscerally at the very edge of articulation.The research asks how this domain of experience, here discussed as liminal perceptive sensibility, may be brought further into articulation while retaining the quality of the experience. This article aims to read Taiwan’s 2019 cinematic horror sensation, Detention, as part of the nation’s effort to construct a grand narrative of collective commemoration, as it tries to streamline its multiple conflicting memories about the Nationalist government’s violent political suppressions of suspected dissidents during the mid-20th century, commonly called the White Terror. For this nationalist narrative to follow the Gothic scenario of progression from repression to liberation, embarrassing elements of the past, especially many White Terror victims’ sympathy with the Chinese Communist Party, must be de-politicized and dis-remembered. My thesis is focused on how and why ambiguity/double meanings within the language of Shakespeare plays occurs, and how this can be adapted into a ballet format as there is no verbal component. As well as why this aspect of the plays is so vital to the portrayal of the characters that to remove it would be to severely reduce the impact of the story. It focuses specifically on the plays and ballets of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo and Juliet, with the NYC Ballet versions of both as a reference.

งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาและฝึกฝนเทคนิคการพัฒนาการใช้เสียงอันเป็นธรรมชาติ ของคริสติน ลิงค์เลเทอร์ และสังเคราะห์กระบวนการการนำเทคนิคดังกล่าวมาปรับใช้ในการพัฒนาการแสดงเดี่ยวบทละครเรื่อง เดอะ ฮิวแมน วอยซ์ เนื่องจากผู้วิจัยประสบปัญหาเกี่ยวกับการใช้เสียงในการแสดง กล่าวคือผู้วิจัยไม่สามารถถ่ายทอดความจริงภายในของตัวละครผ่านเสียงได้อย่างตรงไปตรงมาในบางสถานการณ์ ส่งผลให้ผู้ชมไม่สามารถเข้าถึงอารมณ์ความรู้สึกและเรื่องราวของตัวละครได้อย่างลึกซึ้งและชัดเจน ผู้วิจัยจึงสนใจศึกษาเทคนิคดังกล่าวอันเป็นเทคนิคที่ช่วยให้นักแสดงสามารถค้นพบการใช้เสียงอย่างเป็นอิสระ นำไปสู่การสื่อสารความจริงภายในของตัวละครที่ละเอียดอ่อน ลึกซึ้ง และจริงใจยิ่งขึ้น ผู้วิจัยนำเทคนิคดังกล่าวมาใช้ฝึกฝนในขั้นตอนของการฝึกฝนเสียงเพื่อพัฒนาเสียง และเตรียมความพร้อมของเสียงก่อนการแสดง การฝึกซ้อมบทละคร และการเตรียมตัวก่อนทำการแสดงจริง ผู้วิจัยค้นพบว่าภายหลังการฝึกฝนการใช้เสียงด้วยเทคนิคพัฒนาการใช้เสียงอันเป็นธรรมชาติของคริสติน ลิงค์เลเทอร์ ผู้วิจัยสามารถกำจัดอุปสรรค์ที่ขัดขวางการเชื่อมโยงระหว่างเสียง และอารมณ์ความรู้สึกภายในของตัวละครได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ ผู้วิจัยสามารถถ่ายทอดความจริงภายในของตัวละครได้อย่างลุ่มลึก และจริงใจมากยิ่งขึ้น อีกทั้งผู้วิจัยค้นพบว่าตนเองพัฒนาทักษะอื่น ๆ ทางด้านการแสดงควบคู่ไปด้วย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการเคลื่อนไหวร่างกาย จินตนาการ และประสาทสัมผัส ส่งผลต่อการพัฒนาการแสดงองค์รวมของผู้วิจัย โดยผู้วิจัยทำการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลวิจัย และสรุปผลการวิจัยจากการศึกษาทฤษฎีที่เกี่ยวข้อง จดบันทึกและบันทึกวิดีโอการฝึกซ้อม การรวบรวมแบบสอบถามจากผู้ชม และการสัมมนาร่วมกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญทางด้านการใช้เสียง

งานวิจัยนี้เกิดจากผู้วิจัยตีความบทละครแนวสมจริงเรื่อง เธิร์สท์ ของ ยูจีน โอนีลล์ มีความคิดหลักและประเด็นสำคัญว่าด้วยความไร้แก่นสารของชีวิต ซึ่งเป็นแนวคิดของละครแนวแอบเสิร์ด ทำให้ผู้วิจัยเกิดคำถามว่า จะใช้กระบวนการกำกับการแสดงเพื่อสื่อสารความคิดจากแนวละครแอบเสิร์ดนี้ให้ออกมาในละครสมจริงได้อย่างไร ดังนั้น จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาทดลองกระบวนการกำกับการแสดงที่เหมาะสมให้สื่อสารเพื่อตอบข้อคำถามดังกล่าว ผู้วิจัยใช้วิธีวิจัยเชิงสร้างสรรค์ วิเคราะห์รวบรวมข้อมูลที่เกี่ยวข้อง สร้างกรอบแนวคิดให้เข้าใจรายละเอียดของประเด็นดังกล่าวที่ซ่อนในเนื้อหาบทละคร แล้วนำมาวิเคราะห์ตีความตามหลักการสำหรับกำกับการแสดง และกำหนดแนวคิดงานออกแบบของผู้กำกับการแสดง รวบรวมเตรียมเป็นข้อมูลเพื่อกำกับการแสดง ในช่วงการวิเคราะห์ตีความและการฝึกซ้อม ผู้วิจัยใช้หลักแนวคิดของละครแอบเสิร์ดในการวิเคราะห์ตีความพฤติกรรมตัวละคร ประกอบกับหลักวิเคราะห์ตีความของ สตานิสลาฟสกี ใช้แบบฝึกหัดจินตนาการของแอดเลอร์ ใช้วิธีแนะนำการแสดงให้กับนักแสดงด้วยการเทียบเคียงเหตุการณ์ในเรื่องกับประสบการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นทั่วไป และใช้วิธีการซ้อมดำเนินผ่านฉากตามลำดับต่อเนื่อง เพื่อช่วยตรวจทานสร้างความเข้าใจแกนเงื่อนไขตัวละครให้กับนักแสดง อีกทั้งภาพรวมของจังหวะดำเนินเรื่องร่วมกับองค์ประกอบศิลป์ในการแสดง และทดลองเรียนรู้พัฒนาตลอดช่วงการฝึกซ้อมจนถึงขั้นแสดงผลงานละครต่อสาธารณะชน ผลวิจัยปรากฎว่า เมื่อผู้วิจัยมีกรอบแนวคิดประเด็นเรื่องความไร้แก่นสารของชีวิตมนุษย์ ช่วยเชื่อมโยงประกอบวิเคราะห์ตีความบทละคร ทำให้กระบวนการคิดของผู้วิจัยเข้าใจรายละเอียดในเนื้อหาของบทละครโดยเฉพาะความคิดหลักของเรื่องอย่างกระจ่าง และสร้างความมั่นใจให้กับผู้วิจัยเมื่อกำกับการแสดง สามารถสื่อสารเนื้อหาของบทละครแก่นักแสดง ตลอดจนผู้ชมละครเวทีให้รู้สึกร่วมไปตามรูปแบบนำเสนอละครสมจริงได้ นอกจากนี้ กระบวนวิธีวิจัยดังกล่าว อาจเป็นแนวทางและวิธีช่วยให้ผู้กำกับการแสดง ได้ฝึกหัดค้นหาความคิดหลักของเรื่องให้เข้าใจแม่นยำ ตระหนักกับสิ่งที่ต้องการสื่อสาร รวมทั้งลำดับความสำคัญโดยใช้ความคิดหลักนั้นนำทางค้นหารูปแบบกลวิธีนำเสนอได้อย่างมีทิศทางชัดเจนขึ้นด้วย

การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อให้นักแสดงใช้เครื่องมือของนักแสดง ด้านทักษะจินตนาการ การใช้สมาธิ และการใช้ร่างกาย ในการฝึกการแสดงเพื่อให้เกิดความสมจริงและน่าเชื่อถือในแต่ละตัวละคร โดยบทละครเวทีการแสดงเดี่ยวเรื่อง “นอนไม่หลับ” ของนิกร แซ่ตั้ง นักแสดงต้องสามารถแสดงเป็นตัวละครหลายบทบาท หลายสถานการณ์ และต้องสื่อสารกับผู้ชมอีกด้วย การวิจัยนี้ใช้กระบวนการฝึกทักษะการแสดงและสังเคราะห์จากแนวคิดของนักทฤษฎีการละครที่มีความสำคัญ จากทั้ง คอนสแตนติน สตานิสลาฟกี้ (Constantin Stanislavski)สเตลล่า แอดเลอร์ (Stella Adler) ไมเคิล เชคคอฟ (Michael Chekchov) ทั้งนี้การวิจัยได้ศึกษาและวิเคราะห์ผลจากการฝึกซ้อมเพื่อหาความเชื่อมโยงระหว่างทฤษฎีและการปฏิบัติจากกระบวนการฝีก บันทึกวิดีทัศน์ และการฝึกซ้อมการแสดงร่วมกับผู้กำกับการแสดง ประเมินการแสดงจากอาจารย์ที่ปรึกษา รวบรวมผลการประเมินจากการนำเสนอผลงานของผู้วิจัย เก็บข้อมูลแบบสอบถามจากผู้ชม และเสวนาพูดคุยแลกเปลี่ยนจากผู้ทรงวุฒิหลังจบการแสดงของผู้วิจัย ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การฝึกการปฏิบัติด้วยแนวทางการฝึกจินตนาการ สมาธิ ร่างกาย ที่มีความสม่ำเสมอและต่อเนื่องจะช่วยทำให้นักแสดงเชื่อในสถานการณ์ของตัวละครได้ และมีความกังวลที่ลดลง และมีความอิสระเป็นตัวละครมากยิ่งขึ้นขณะแสดง

การสื่อสารด้วยความเห็นอกเห็นใจเป็นหนึ่งในทักษะความเป็นมืออาชีพของแพทย์ที่ควรเสริมสร้างตั้งแต่การเรียนในระดับมหาวิทยาลัย ความเห็นอกเห็นใจส่งผลต่อความสัมพันธ์ที่ดีของแพทย์และคนไข้ ช่วยให้แพทย์วินิจฉัยและเก็บข้อมูลจากคนไข้ได้ดีขึ้น ลดความวิตกกังวลและความเครียดของคนไข้ ศิลปะการละครเป็นศาสตร์ที่มีศักยภาพในการฝึกฝนความเห็นอกเห็นใจ ปัจจุบันมีการใช้ละครด้นสดมาบูรณาการกับการฝึกฝนทักษะการสื่อสารด้วยความเห็นอกเห็นใจในนักศึกษาแพทย์ แต่ยังขาดการศึกษาที่ใช้ทฤษฎีการแสดงมาประยุกต์ในเชิงปฏิบัติ และยังไม่มีการศึกษารูปแบบนี้ในประเทศไทย วิจัยนี้ศึกษาการออกแบบ ‘หลักสูตรการแสดงเพื่อความเห็นอกเห็นใจ’ สำหรับนักศึกษาแพทย์ไทย มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความเหมาะสม ความพึงพอใจ และทัศนคติของนักศึกษาแพทย์ที่มีต่อหลักสูตร ตลอดจนศึกษาพัฒนาการด้านการสื่อสารและทัศนคติที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปหลังเรียน การออกแบบหลักสูตรใช้หลักการแสดงของนักการละครชาวรัสเซีย คอนสแตนติน สตานิสลาฟสกี ประกอบด้วยทักษะ 3 ด้าน ได้แก่ ภาวะสร้างสรรค์ การเชื่อมโยง และจินตนาการ นำมาบูรณาการกับการฝึกฝนทักษะการสื่อสารด้วยความเห็นอกเห็นใจ ได้เป็นหลักสูตรการแสดงความยาว 3 วัน รวมทั้งสิ้น 18 ชั่วโมงที่มุ่งหวังให้นักศึกษาแพทย์เชื่อมโยงกับตนเอง ผู้อื่น และคนไข้อย่างมืออาชีพ หลักสูตรได้นำมาใช้กับนักศึกษาแพทย์กลุ่มนำร่อง 6 ราย เพื่อปรับปรุงหลักสูตรและกลุ่มตัวอย่าง 21 ราย เพื่อวัดผล ตัวอย่าง 19 ราย ได้สื่อสารกับผู้ป่วยจำลองก่อนและหลังเรียนเพื่อประเมินทักษะการสื่อสารที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไป ผลวิจัยพบว่ามากกว่า 95% ของกลุ่มตัวอย่างเห็นด้วยว่าหลักสูตรช่วยพัฒนาทักษะการสื่อสารด้วยความเห็นอกเห็นใจ ได้เข้าใจความเห็นอกเห็นใจมากขึ้น เป็นประโยชน์ต่อนักศึกษาแพทย์ อยากชักชวนเพื่อนให้มาเรียน สนใจเข้าร่วมอีกในอนาคต และเห็นด้วยว่าการละครช่วยให้ฝึกฝนทักษะการสื่อสารด้วยความเห็นอกเห็นใจได้ดีขึ้น การสื่อสารกับผู้ป่วยจำลองหลังจบหลักสูตรพบว่า ตัวอย่างมีคะแนนการประเมินทักษะการสื่อสารด้วยความเห็นอกเห็นใจสูงขึ้นในทุกด้าน ทักษะที่พัฒนาเด่นชัดคือด้านความเห็นอกเห็นใจและภาษากาย ตัวอย่างได้สะท้อนถึงคุณลักษณะเด่นของละครในการพัฒนาศักยภาพทั้งในระดับบุคคลไปถึงระดับระหว่างบุคคล การเรียนรู้มนุษย์และอารมณ์ต่าง ๆ ผ่านตัวละครคือจุดเด่นของหลักสูตรนี้ ละครเป็นกิจกรรมแบบบูรณาการที่เหมาะสมและสามารถพัฒนาทักษะการสื่อสารด้วยความเห็นอกเห็นใจของนักศึกษาแพทย์ได้ สามารถประยุกต์เป็นกิจกรรมเสริมในรายวิชาหรือประยุกต์ใช้กับบุคลากรทางการแพทย์ได้

งานวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยทางศิลปะที่บูรณาการข้ามศาสตร์ระหว่างศิลปะแสดงสด กับศิลปะการละคร โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์ที่จะสร้างผลงาน “ศิลปะแสดงสด”ด้วยสื่อศิลปะหลายรูปแบบ และประยุกต์ใช้กลวิธีของศิลปะการละคร ได้แก่ การเล่าเรื่อง และ การแสดง เพื่อนำเสนอผลงาน ศิลปะแสดงสด จากเรื่องเล่าส่วนตัวและความทรงจำ โดยกำหนดประเด็นหลักที่จะสื่อสาร ได้แก่ การกลับไปทบทวนสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้น ได้ทำความเข้าใจกับอดีต การเยียวยาและการรับรู้บริบทของ “ครอบครัว” ที่เป็นส่วนสำคัญในการสร้างพื้นที่ปลอดภัยเพื่อก้าวพ้นผ่านเวลาที่ยากลำบากผู้วิจัยคาดหวังว่าผลงาน “ศิลปะแสดงสด” ที่ใช้หลักของการเล่าเรื่องและการแสดงทางศิลปะการละคร จะสามารถสื่อสารและสร้างประสบการณ์การรับรู้ในการรับมือกับเหตุการณ์ร้าย ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นจากการถูกกลั่นแกล้งทางสังคมให้กับผู้ชมแต่ละบุคคลในขณะชมการแสดง ทำให้เกิดแรงบันดาลใจ และ จะเป็นประโยชน์สำหรับผู้ชมในการรับรู้เรื่องราวที่เป็นประเด็นทางสังคมนำไปสู่การก้าวผ่านความรู้สึกอันเป็นทุกข์ของตนได้ทั้งในปัจจุบันและอนาคต

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการเขียนบทละครเวทีสำหรับเยาวชนช่วงวัยรุ่น อายุ 12-15 ปี โดยมุ่งเน้นการส่งเสริมการยอมรับตนเองและความมั่นใจของวัยรุ่นผ่านบทละครเวที ผ่านการทบทวนวรรณกรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องใน 5 ประเด็นหลัก ได้แก่ การเขียนบทละครตามแบบฉบับ, แนวทางการเขียนบทละครสำหรับเยาวชน, เกมออนไลน์, พัฒนาการของวัยรุ่นตอนต้น, และการทำงานร่วมกับเยาวชนในโครงการแก่นอีสานวัฒน์ เพื่อค้นหาสาระสำคัญที่เชื่อมโยงกับกลุ่มเป้าหมาย จากนั้นผู้วิจัยได้พัฒนาบทละครร่าง "ไอ้หัวกล่อง" ร่วมกับผู้กำกับและนักแสดงจนได้บทละครที่ใช้สำหรับการทดลองอ่านในกลุ่มเยาวชนในพื้นที่จังหวัดขอนแก่น ผลการศึกษาพบว่า บทละครสามารถสื่อสารประเด็นการยอมรับตนเองและการเห็นคุณค่าในตนเองได้ แต่ยังจำเป็นต้องพัฒนาบทให้มีความสมบูรณ์มากขึ้น โดยเฉพาะเรื่องย่อที่เป็นส่วนสำคัญของการกำหนดทิศทางเรื่อง แม้ว่าบทละครในขั้นตอนนี้จะยังไม่สมบูรณ์ แต่การทดลองอ่านและรับฟังความคิดเห็นจากเยาวชนช่วยให้ผู้วิจัยสามารถเข้าใจถึงความต้องการของกลุ่มเป้าหมายและปรับปรุงบทละครได้ดียิ่งขึ้น นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า บทละครสามารถพัฒนาเป็นเครื่องมือในการทำงานร่วมกับเยาวชนในฐานะฟาซิลิเตเตอร์ (Facilitator) โดยให้เยาวชนมีส่วนร่วมในการเขียนบทและกระบวนการฝึกทำละคร ซึ่งช่วยให้พวกเขาได้เรียนรู้การยอมรับตนเองและสร้างความมั่นใจในตนเองจากการฝึกฝนทำละคร

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง การตีบทสอพินยาในละครพันทางเรื่องผู้ชนะสิบทิศ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการตีบทสอพินยาในละครพันทางเรื่องผู้ชนะสิบทิศของอาจารย์เสรี หวังในธรรม จำนวน 6 บท ได้แก่ บทโอ้อวด บทข่มขู่ บทโกรธแค้น บทเสียใจ บทฆ่าตัวตาย และบทการต่อสู้ แบบตัวต่อตัวระหว่างสอพินยากับจะเด็ด (อาวุธสั้น) และการต่อสู้แบบ 2 ต่อ 1 ระหว่างสอพินยาและไขลู กับมังตรา (อาวุธยาว) โดยผู้วิจัยศึกษาข้อมูลจากเอกสารวิชาการที่เกี่ยวข้อง การสัมภาษณ์ การสังเกตการณ์แบบมีส่วนร่วมโดยการฝึกซ้อมการแสดง และไม่มีส่วนร่วมโดยการรับชมการแสดงสดและชมวีดิทัศน์ โดยมุ่งศึกษากลวิธีการตีบทสอพินยาจากรูปแบบและวิธีการปฏิบัติของอาจารย์จุลชาติ อรัณยะนาค ผู้เชี่ยวชาญนาฏศิลป์ไทย (โขนยักษ์) วิทยาลัยนาฏศิลป สถาบันบัณฑิตพัฒนศิลป์ กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม ผลการวิจัยพบว่าอาจารย์จุลชาติ อรัณยะนาค เป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญและมีความสามารถทางด้านการแสดงนาฏศิลป์ไทยทั้งโขนและละคร เคยได้รับบทบาททั้ง ตัวประกอบ พระเอกและตัวโกง สำหรับบทบาทการแสดงที่มีความโดดเด่นที่สุดคือ สอพินยาในการแสดงละครพันทางเรื่องผู้ชนะสิบทิศของอาจารย์เสรี หวังในธรรม เป็นตัวละครจัดอยู่ในประเภทตัวโกงที่มีความหลากหลายทางด้านอารมณ์ บุคลิก อุปนิสัยและพฤติกรรมต่าง ๆ ทำให้สอพินยาเป็นตัวละครที่โดดเด่นตัวหนึ่งในเรื่องผู้ชนะสิบทิศ โดยคุณลักษณะของผู้แสดงต้องเป็นคนที่ใช้น้ำเสียงดัง ฟังชัด สามารถแก้ไขสถานการณ์เฉพาะหน้าในระหว่างการแสดงได้อย่างเรียบเนียน เป็นผู้มีประสบการณ์การแสดงทั้งโขนและละคร เพื่อให้ได้มาของการสวมบทบาทที่ชวนน่าติดตาม ลักษณะพิเศษของอาจารย์จุลชาติ อรัณยะนาค ในกลวิธีแสดงบทบาทสอพินยา ผู้วิจัยพบอยู่ 3 ลักษณะเด่นด้วยกันที่เป็นปัจจัยทำให้บทบาทสอพินยาที่แสดงโดยอาจารย์จุลชาติเป็นที่กล่าวขาน คือ 1. การให้ความสำคัญในการปรับบุคลิกของตัวละคร 2. การให้ความสำคัญในบทละคร 3. การให้ความสำคัญในอารมณ์ความรู้สึกของตัวละคร นอกจากนี้พบการใช้ท่ารำประกอบในกลวิธีการตีบทสอพินยามี 3 ประเด็นด้วยกัน คือ 1. การใช้ท่ารำเต็ม หรือท่ามาตรฐาน 2. การใช้ท่ารำเลียนแบบธรรมชาติ 3. การใช้ท่ารำเสริมบท ทั้งนี้ผู้แสดงจะต้องศึกษาความเข้าใจในบทละครอย่างถ่องแท้ถึงจะดูสมจริง จึงจะแสดงในบทบาทสอพินยาได้อย่างสมบูรณ์แบบ

This oppression has motivated Jewish activists worldwide to fight back not only on behalf of the Jewish community but for many areas of perceived need. "Notes on a Chiller" unfolds as a series of site responsive and performative exercises that activate, modulate, and translate the immense voice of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center water-cooled chiller, a climate control system that regulates the atmosphere of the university’s sports arena. Using individual and collective listening and sound-making practices to harness the building’s noisy system, the piece culminates in a multi-channel, audio-visual installation and performance that explores the multi-sensory exchange and entanglement of listening, breathing, and moving with a building’s circulatory system.

The few states that have passed the Model Consumer Sales Practices Act have common definitions and case law regarding the definition of a “supplier.” This definition is broad enough to include managers of companies in limited liability entities in the states that have adopted the model act. The practicality is that business principals, owners, and managers can be held personally liable for deceptive practices under the state acts. The complex and beautiful relationship the people in Victorian England had to the bee is one that goes beyond ideas of politics and religion. This thesis will explore this relationship by utilizing print, ephemera, jewelry, and household items, to demonstrate how the representation and symbolism of the bee was recognized and cherished by Victorians. While bees did certainly have an intimate relationship to the areas of politics and religion, one that is acknowledged throughout this work, their connection to grander themes of introspection, industrialism, folklore, morality, and status helps us understand the Victorians on a deeper level.

The flute works of Claude Arrieu (1903-1990) are relatively unknown, as is Arrieu herself. A composer active throughout the twentieth century and a radio producer in Paris during the 1930s and 1940s, Arrieu and her music are now often lost amongst the more popular works of her French contemporaries. Her compositional output, which includes music written for traditional concerts and over seventy scores for radio and film, displays her ease in navigating the early twentieth century’s changing mediums of music performance. Madness in literature has a long and colourful history. While its representation varies significantly in different literary periods, madness is nonetheless a consistent theme responding to inherent conflicts of civilisation. Thus, in the eighteenth-century novel, madness is subdued and forced to express itself in the language of rationality, while in the nineteenth century the theme becomes increasingly subversive. In the form of the madwoman trope (Gilbert and Gubar 1979), madness is simultaneously a reaction to restrictive patriarchal norms, and a frame in which the gender conflicts of the time can be safely and effectively played out.
