The Graduation Walk: Pareto Optimization Of Degree Paths, Arianna Gail Sy Chaves
The Graduation Walk: Pareto Optimization Of Degree Paths, Arianna Gail Sy Chaves
Masters Theses
"A student’s academic history, course availability at their institution, and the overall degree of difficulty of the schedule for each semester are all critical factors in their academic success and experience. This thesis proposes an advanced recommendation algorithm that considers these real and conflicting factors that are involved in identifying a prudent degree path - a semester-by-semester course schedule to graduation - for each student. The original contribution of this work is the use of weighted-sum multi-objective constraint programming to minimize an increased number of optimization criteria and identify Pareto-optimal degree paths to be recommended to the student. The conflicting …

Ai & Antitrust: The Algorithm Made Me Do It, Robin Feldman, Caroline Yuen
Faculty Scholarship
As the dawn of artificial intelligence (“AI”) rises rapidly, competition authorities should contemplate the potential for hazy days ahead. Undoubtedly, AI’s already ubiquitous presence offers exciting possibilities, from enhancing efficiency, to leveling the playing field for non-native speakers,to enabling scientific discovery.Despite these breathtaking advancements, however, recent data from the Pew Research Center reveal that only 15% of adults surveyed were “more excited than concerned about the increasing use of AI in daily life,” with 46% expressing “an equal mix of concern and excitement.”
Policymakers also manifest concerns about AI, exemplified by the extent to which government actors are racing to …

"The Reed That Bends With The Wind Does Not Break"-The Complexities Of Multicultural Mediation And The Use Of Artistic Tools To Overcome Them, Nokukhanya Ntuli
"The Reed That Bends With The Wind Does Not Break"-The Complexities Of Multicultural Mediation And The Use Of Artistic Tools To Overcome Them, Nokukhanya Ntuli
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
Mediation processes are inherently complex and require flexibility and adaptability. This is especially true for mediation processes involving multiple parties with diverse cultural backgrounds. This paper examines the complexities created by cultural diversity in mediation. The paper highlights a dispute between the local community of Msango, West Africa, and an international mining company. It highlights how linguistic and literacy barriers complicated the process, undermining effective communication and progress. The complication identified at the start of the process necessitated the process design to encompass tools to overcome the barriers identified early on. As the mediation progressed, the mediators continued to uncover …

Montana As Place Of (Un)Belonging: Landscape, Identity, And The American West In Bella Vista (2014), Najmeh Moradiyan-Rizi
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
The American West is not just a geographical terrain but a mythical construct that occupies a powerful place in the popular imagination thanks to myriad literary and artistic works that have presented the region through specific archetypes emphasizing its vast ruggedness, white masculinity, and unique Americanness. In recent decades, revisionist scholarly and artistic works, however, have attempted to offer more nuanced perspectives on the region challenging its assumed homogenous history and fixed and stable identity. In particular, women filmmakers have recast the region through multifaceted representations underlining its complexity, diversity, and transnational dimensions. This article analyzes Vera Brunner-Sung’s film Bella …

American Dream: Social Pressures And Lackluster Regulation Allow Multi-Level Marketing Companies To Function As De Facto Pyramid Schemes, Lindsay R. Maher
American Dream: Social Pressures And Lackluster Regulation Allow Multi-Level Marketing Companies To Function As De Facto Pyramid Schemes, Lindsay R. Maher
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
The entrepreneurial spirit goes to the heart of the American Dream. Pull yourself up by the bootstraps. Put your nose to the grindstone. If you could just be given the tools to get started, you, too, can make something of yourself with hard work and perseverance. This mindset drives millions of people each year to participate in Multi-Level Marketing companies (MLMs), which are advertised as an opportunity to start your own business, sell products, and work on your own schedule. MLMs are also designed to reward sellers each time they successfully encourage another person to join, so much so that …
Using Public Policy Citation Data In University Decision Making: Understanding, Sharing And Responsible Use, Euan Adie
Research Analytics Summit 2024
The 2018 Evidence Act has mandated US government departments and agencies to be much clearer about their research agendas and the engagement they want with academic researchers and institutions. Tracking those engagements has become easier as data providers increasingly supply information on policy engagement or policy citations, tracking where academics at an institution have been cited in or mentioned by name in government reports and policy documents at a local, state or federal level. This session covers the processes, policies and best practice you need to put in place to start using policy engagement data responsibly, both to track and …

Fascism: A Reading List With Notes, Michael F. Russo
Fascism: A Reading List With Notes, Michael F. Russo
Faculty Publications
Today, Fascism is on the rise around the world including, dismayingly, in the United States of America, threatening the rule of law, which is the basis of democracy. In the U. S. Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican nominee for president, has declared himself the standard bearer for authoritarian rule. If he wins, it is likely the United States will cease to be a democracy. If democracy is to survive, it is essential that citizens understand fascism, how it comes into existence, and what it does once it has taken root is essential. That is the reason for this reading list.

When Divergent Worlds Collide: Dr. Santiago Ramón Y Cajal’S Influence On The Surrealism Movement, William J. Hardman Iii, Md
MA Theses
Dr. Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s drawings were created for the sole purpose of illustrating his newly discovered and earth-shattering revelations in the field of neuroscience culminating with his magnum opus: the “Neuron theory” and the “Theory of Dynamic Polarization.” For these discoveries and many others, he shared the 1906 Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology with his rival Dr. Camilo Golgi, an Italian pathologist. At no time did he envision that his drawings would capture the interest of artists as it did with members of the Surrealism Movement. This thesis will explore and present for the first time supporting evidence …

An Exploration Of The Race And Gender Representations In Professional Wrestling In The United States: A Qualitative Case Study, Luther P. Lucas
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Professional Wrestling has long perpetuated stereotypical representations of race and gender through its performers and the storylines in which they participate. While the popularity of professional wrestling has varied over the years, its impact on popular culture has persisted for decades. This study focuses on the race and gender representations present in storylines and texts in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Through critical multicultural analysis, a conceptual framework built upon curriculum studies and critical media literacy, this study explored the dominant social structures in professional wrestling. Findings were that women are often relegated to secondary roles and Black males are regularly …

Beyond The Strong Black Woman: Navigating Resilience And Mental Health Using Social Media For Culturally Tailored Resources, Muchaneta N.M. Chikawa
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Society views the strength of Black women as commendable as it shows positive qualities such as resilience and perseverance. While these traits are characterized as positive, Black women’s survival in American society has heavily depended on their strength, resulting in mental health illnesses such as anxiety and depression. The idea that Black women must exude strength and fortitude through adversity is labeled the Strong Black Woman Schema (SBWS). The SBWS is a race-gender schema that prescribes culturally-specific feminine expectations for Black women.
There are limited culturally-tailored resources for Black women to address mental health at collegiate institutions. As a result …
