This Note discusses the theatrical casting process from publishing a breakdown through audition day type outs and how this process exposes productions, theater companies, and Actor’s Equity Association (“AEA”) to potential liability. Part I provides a background on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. § 2000e, and 42 U.S.C. § 1981, as these are the federal antidiscrimination laws under which a lawsuit is most likely to arise. Part II explores the language of breakdowns, defines the concept of theatrical typing, and discusses the two predominant methods the theater industry frequently utilizes in casting shows. The following dissertation is a project of infrastructure history. This project chiefly focuses on human-constructed time and boredom in the Western world. The Western world has worked collectively to control time for thousands of years. In the pre-modern era, time was primarily monitored using the Sun’s path across the sky. In that period, evidence demonstrates that time was a passive regulator known primarily through the movement of celestial bodies. The orbit of the Moon around the Earth generated the month, which could be measured in multiple ways. Months aided in counting the periods for the seasons and for the harvest. …

On Unperformable Plays And The Metaphysics Of The Stage: Hölderlin And Kleist, Netta Sovinsky

This project reads through two German plays from around 1800 that were considered “unperformable” at their time: Hölderlin’s Der Tod des Empedokles and Kleist’s Penthesilea. My work thinks of theatrical “unperformability” as a rebellion against the epistemological and metaphysical frames that were dominating the theater of their time, as well as the public space that this theater was affirming and forming. The plays, I suggest, expose and in fact perform “on stage” the conditions of appearance of the Dramatic stage, which they do not obey – conditions that in Dramatic theater were supposed to be hidden. This qualitative study examines how academic librarians understand, conceptualize, and describe their teacher identity. The role of the academic librarian has greatly changed due to the advent of information technology. Traditionally, they were generalists, who were responsible for selecting and maintaining library collections. Academic librarian roles have evolved into web developers, information literacy (IL) instructors, emerging technology innovators, marketing and outreach coordinators, open education resources (OER) advocates, and scholarly communication experts. Julia Wang explains why from her perspective, as someone who grew up in Beijing, America still remains a land of prosperity and possibility. She describes why her and her husband’s low-income existence when they first lived in the U.S. felt like material comfort and security relative to what they were accustomed to in China. Wang argues that people in the U.S. who work hard, value the educational opportunities, and sacrifice themselves for their children’s well-being continue to achieve the “American Dream” of success.

A widely debated topic in the field of translation studies is how to accurately preserve the full connotations and denotations of culturemes, which are words or phrases that have no direct equivalent in other languages due to their intrinsic cultural context, when translating them into another language. My project compares Edith Grossman (2003) and Thomas Shelton’s (1612) translations of selected culturemes in the first part of Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote (1605) to analyze how different approaches to translating culturemes affect the tone and style, which also provides additional insights into the themes of class and formality and how the …

This is more so seen in Western literature overpowering Eastern literature’s importance. One such place overlooked is Japan. There is plenty to unpack in Japanese literature, but one such area is the changes it has due to cultural events.
