Living-Learning Communities In Modern Day Higher Education: Creating Seamless Learning Environments In Colorado And California, Emily Fogg, Sheryl Rosenberg Dec 2024

Living-Learning Communities In Modern Day Higher Education: Creating Seamless Learning Environments In Colorado And California, Emily Fogg, Sheryl Rosenberg

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

This essay uses Blimling and Whitt’s (1999) Principles of Good Practice to identify living- learning communities (LLCs) as a current best practice in student affairs. The authors draw examples from four institutions in Colorado and California, including the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado College, the University of California Santa Cruz, and Santa Clara Univer- sity. Research is used to highlight the benefits of living-learning communities. The essay concludes by summarizing common themes among living- learning communities, as well as differences and trends within these institutions. Through the analysis of these LLC models, practitioners in the field can use them …

Tactical Staging: Evolving Methods Of Feminist Activism In Susan Glaspell’S Work, Allison Mcpeak Dec 2024

Tactical Staging: Evolving Methods Of Feminist Activism In Susan Glaspell’S Work, Allison Mcpeak

English: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

In the marketplace of ideas, the Theatre Arts employ narrative stories and eye-catching visual art pieces draw listeners and viewers in a way that is unmatched by other methods. Art not only reflects the society from which it was created, it also acts as a projection of the creator’s ideal world. Theatre, being both a sonic and visual medium also has the unique advantage of speaking directly to a captive audience that are physically in the same room as the characters onstage, making those connections significantly more personal. A caveat, however, is that modern theatre tends to reflect the values …

Language Use Of Emergent Bilingual Latino/A Students In A Music Class Setting, Karen G. Granados Dumais Dec 2024

Language Use Of Emergent Bilingual Latino/A Students In A Music Class Setting, Karen G. Granados Dumais

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study investigated the way in which emergent bilingual students utilize their linguistic repertoire in order to achieve new learning. Previous research has suggested that bilingual students learn differently than their monolingual counterparts due to their varying linguistic repertoires. Research has also suggested that translanguaging and culturally relevant teaching are valuable frameworks to adopt in the classroom, as they result in a better academic experience for all students.

I took an ethnographic approach while conducting a case study. I collected data in my elementary music classroom in the form of observations, audio recordings, and document analysis in order to help …

Little Shop Of Patriarchy : Analyzing Constructed Vs. Essential Gender Roles, Taylor Gadsden-Deterville Dec 2024

Little Shop Of Patriarchy : Analyzing Constructed Vs. Essential Gender Roles, Taylor Gadsden-Deterville

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Frank Oz’s Little Shop of Horrors (1986) is more than a silly kooky musical. The comedic plot dramatically dances with themes of domestic violence, poverty, and sexism. For this project, my poster will explore the expectations and representations of femininity and masculinity set up at the film's beginning versus the end. The film’s context will connect to research involving gender essentialism (innate, biological sex) and gender constructionism (socially constructed gender roles). I will analyze the roles of Seymour, Audrey, and Orin to exhibit how they discover their constructed and essential gender identities. The film represents Audrey as a ditsy hyper-feminine …

Dancetag: Using Sensors To Improve Feedback Given To Dance Students, Yanelly Mego, Franceli L. Cibrian

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The structure of dance classrooms has remained largely unchanged for years, with minimal integration of technology to enhance teaching. This has motivated our research project, which aims to capture dance movements using wearable sensors and translate the information into meaningful visualizations to help dancers improve their skills. As the first step in addressing the research question—can data from commercial wearables differentiate between the movements of dancers and non-dancers?—we developed DANCETAG (Data Analytics and Notation with Captured Event Tagging), a platform designed for data collection and movement annotation. We utilized Sony’s Mocopi sensors, a motion capture system with six sensors attached …

Randomized Clinical Trial To Compare Cryopreserved And Lyopreserved Umbilical Cord Tissue To Treat Complex Diabetic Foot Wounds, Lawrence A. Lavery, Mehmet A. Suludere, Matthew J. Johnson, Amanda Killeen, Katherine M. Raspovic, Peter A. Crisologo, Arthur Tarricone Dec 2024

Randomized Clinical Trial To Compare Cryopreserved And Lyopreserved Umbilical Cord Tissue To Treat Complex Diabetic Foot Wounds, Lawrence A. Lavery, Mehmet A. Suludere, Matthew J. Johnson, Amanda Killeen, Katherine M. Raspovic, Peter A. Crisologo, Arthur Tarricone

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications

To compare the incidence of infection, wound closure and time to wound closure in patients treated with cryopreserved (CPUT) and lyopreserved umbilical tissue (LPUT) in complex diabetic surgical wounds. This single-blinded 12-week randomized clinical trial compared cryopreserved and lyopreserved amniotic cord tissue to treat complex diabetic foot wounds. LPUT or CRAT was applied at baseline and again after four weeks. We enrolled subjects with UT2A-D and 3A-D wounds (depth to tendon, muscle, or bone with infection and/or PAD) and excluded subjects with ABI < 0.5 or TBI < 0.3, untreated osteomyelitis, and autoimmune diseases. We used a 3-D camera to evaluate wound area and volume. The mean baseline wound areas were 12.9 ± 10.7 cm2 for CPUT and 11.7 ± 7.0 cm2 for LPUT. The mean baseline wound volume was 7.5 ± 8.1 for CPUT and 9.2 ± 10.2 cm3 for LPUT. There was no difference between CPUT and LPUT in wound closure (36.8% vs 19.0%, P = .21) or infection (10.5% vs 4.8%, P = .60). There was no difference in mean …

Is Dance A Universal Language? - Global Contemporary Dance, Mandy Fang Dec 2024

Is Dance A Universal Language? - Global Contemporary Dance, Mandy Fang

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

From its origins, a core value of contemporary dance is rebellion. The definition of contemporary dance has evolved throughout the decades as dancers continue to discover innovative movements that almost contradict their predecessors, inspiring its ever-evolving aesthetic. Unlike other technical styles like ballet, there is no strict codified “right” or “wrong,” nor is there a set vocabulary, meaning contemporary dance can look like a lot of things. A common conception when it comes to dance in general is how it transcends nationalities as a universal language of sorts. However, given the individualistic nature of contemporary dance and global varieties of …

Sustainability In A Theatre Career: The Power Of Passion And Partnership, Jane Broderson Dec 2024

Sustainability In A Theatre Career: The Power Of Passion And Partnership, Jane Broderson

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Artistic burnout has been a long-accepted reality for theatre professionals and is consequently a common fear for many young artists looking to enter the entertainment industry. Traditionally and infamously, theatre jobs are associated with long hours, significant emotional investment, financial insecurity, criticism, and rejection, which can diminish one’s love for their craft. While this may ring true as an unfortunate reality of professional theatre, artists such as myself continue to strive toward the successful and rewarding paths that a select few have managed to achieve, raising the question: how do people sustain a career and vocation in theatre? My aim …

Head To Toe: What Do We Think About Heels Dance?, Peyton Winsett

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Through both observation as a dance consumer and personal experience as a dance student, heels dance has noticeably risen in prominence within the commercial dance industry in recent years. This style has primarily been showcased through professional dance classes and in commercial and concept video projects. This study seeks to understand the reasons behind this sudden growth in appeal, the potential social implications of this increasing popularity, and the varying perspectives on this style across generations. It synthesizes past research and analyzes a survey conducted with current students in Chapman University's dance department. This presentation will investigate the motivations driving …

Was It Good? A Look At The Golden-Ticket Question Of Societal Preferences In Theatre, Carina Leland Dec 2024

Was It Good? A Look At The Golden-Ticket Question Of Societal Preferences In Theatre, Carina Leland

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

What makes theatre “good?” There are some common answers that critics and the public agree upon, but the guidelines of good theatre have changed greatly throughout history. Many playwrights and critics have created philosophies that attempted to define popular theatre in their time or according to their personal views. Today’s opinion on “good” has its own set of characteristics that the majority of society enjoys, which is unique from any historical manifesto. Furthermore, our modern consensus doesn’t take into account the wildly different nature of individual preferences; while I enjoy light-hearted coming-of-age stories, others find deeper satisfaction from a thought-provoking …

Exploring The Sublime Through Sound Design: A Multiplatform Approach, Elsie Mader

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The world around us has always vibrated with constant sound. That audio provides context for everyday activity, the background against which all life is played. To highlight its significance in the human experience, this study explores the impact of audio on emotion through my sound design for Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins' morality play Everybody. Creating and describing the design process, this study seeks to discover how sound influences emotional response, shapes mood, and complements visual elements. Aiming to discern what soothes or incites audiences, the design focuses on a juxtaposition between familiar and unfamiliar sounds. Special attention is paid to base elements …
