Economic Determinism And Its Implications In David Lindsay Abaire’S Good People, Ziead Dhirgham Mahmoud Mar 2025

Economic Determinism And Its Implications In David Lindsay Abaire’S Good People, Ziead Dhirgham Mahmoud

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The research article expounds on a fundamental concern of economy in the human society. David Lindsay-Abaire, a versatile modern writer of the twenty first century, has to his credit the penning of Good People, which has been expediently celebrated in the literary circle as a play that is suffused with aspects of human nature that are simultaneously tender and tough to digest. The themes, on which the internal action of the play rests, range from miscellaneous concerns of race to economy. The latter plays a significant role as the backdrop against which the central figure of Margaret is left suspended …

Shattered Dreams: Disillusioned Optimism And Consequences Of Late Intrusion In Brian Friel's Molly Sweeney, Esraa Jalal Jawad Al-Gawhari, Hamid Hammad Abed Mar 2025

Shattered Dreams: Disillusioned Optimism And Consequences Of Late Intrusion In Brian Friel's Molly Sweeney, Esraa Jalal Jawad Al-Gawhari, Hamid Hammad Abed

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

Through textual analysis, the dynamics between the characters are revealed. Molly, despite her contentment with blindness, hopes for fulfillment through a medical intervention, Frank is relentlessly optimistic, and Rice portrays himself as a savior. However, the late intrusion …

Hoping For A Better World: Utopian Performatives In Jez Butterworth's "The Hills Of California", Lily Jensen

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Jez Butterworth’s 2024 play, The Hills of California, tells the story of the Webb sisters—Joan, Gloria, Ruby, Jillian—and their mother, Veronica, in 1950s and 1970s Blackpool, England. In 1976, it is the hottest summer on record in Blackpool, and Veronica is dying of cancer. Jillian, Gloria, and Ruby have gathered together to wait for her to die, with the hope that Joan (who has supposedly been living a fabulous life in America for 20 years) will come back to say a last goodbye to their mother. The play flips back and forth between the 70s and the 50s. We …
