2014-2015 Discover the Heartbeat of Creative Life

The New York Times called Shanghai Quartet’s performance of the Ravel String Quartet in F Major “passionate…driven, elegant and nuanced.” In this program, the Quartet pairs it with Beethoven’s String Quartet no. 12 in E-flat Major, op. 127, and the world premiere of a new work by acclaimed young composer Du Yun. Tentatively titled Tattooed in Snow, the new work is inspired by the temporary and fragile crystallization of art in nature and in space, as well as by chant and poetry.

Nuts And Bolts Of Unrelated Business Income Tax, Terri Lynn Helge

Faculty Scholarship

This paper summarizes the unrelated business income tax rules as they apply to tax-exempt charitable organizations described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Code. Since the 1950s, the unrelated business income tax has been imposed on a charity’s net income from a regularly carried on trade or business that is unrelated to the charity’s tax-exempt purposes. Often times, the justification for imposing this tax on a charity’s net income from unrelated business activities is that such activities involve unfair competition with the charity’s for-profit counterparts.

Buddhism As Performing Art: Visualizing Music In The Tibetan Sacred Ritual Music Liturgies, Jeffrey W. Cupchik

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

The eleventh-century Tibetan female ascetic, Machik Labdrön (1055-1153), developed a Vajrayāna (Tantric) Buddhist meditation method called Chöd (Tib. gCod, Eng. “to cut”) and associated ritual practices as a means of eliminating “self-grasping,” which is defined as the mistaken instinct of regarding one’s “self” and all phenomena as intrinsically, or independently, existent. Her musical-meditation method became renowned across Central Asia during her lifetime, and Chödritual practices and liturgies have been transmitted from teacher to disciple in unbroken lineages until today.
