This dissertation investigates the history of the cultural resilience and advocacy of the Gullah people of South Carolina and the Maroons of Jamaica, with a particular emphasis on their function as role models for the empowerment of descendants of the formerly enslaved (DOFE). This investigation examines how enslaved communities preserved cultural identity, resisted systemic injustice and influenced Pan-Africanism and Civil Rights movements in the 20th and 21st centuries. This research emphasizes the experiences of the Gullah people who maintained cultural identity through acculturation, and the enslaved populations from South Carolina’s interior regions and other Southern states, who faced assimilation. Which Virtues Are 'The' Virtues? A Rank-Ordered Analysis Of Virtues In Leadership, Maegan L. Winegar

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The current research study was conducted from an Aristotelian and Christian understanding of virtue within leadership. Nineteen virtues were identified in the literature review and discussed as essential for living a life of eudaimonia or flourishing. Within the literature review, a gap was identified in the discrepancy between how the general public conceptualizes virtue and how philosophers, psychologists, and theologists understand virtue. Additionally, scientific research in leadership is inconsistent in the operationalization of virtue, which limits the ability to research virtues in leadership validly and reliably. Creekshed: Ekphrastic Writing with the Archives

“Oysters” explores Tampa Bay’s history of oyster harvesting and how this once-revered and plentiful delicacy has suffered from infrastructural expansion and unchecked pollution. The eponymous mollusk oscillates between a readily available bounty and an environmental omen that signals the ecological doom of the region, demonstrating the significance of the oyster regarding the identity of Tampa Bay.

Abstract

Background: Surgical smoke is a byproduct produced during surgical procedures when high-energy producing devices are used to vaporize tissue. This smoke poses health risk to anyone present in the operating room.

Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to educate and minimize the exposure of both staff and patients to the hazardous toxic fumes and vapors produced by energy-generating electrocautery devices.

Methods: The intervention based on the Kim Ball Smoke Evacuation Compliance Model was implemented in a large military hospital with 20 operating rooms and three labor and delivery suites. Implementation included formal education strategies, equipment …

After the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, General Charles Cornwallis was able to gain a minor victory against Nathanael Greene but had suffered great losses during the battle. Instead of making the cautious decision to retreat to Charleston, Cornwallis decided to make an ambitious attack into Virginia. While this offense was met with initial success, his army was ultimately destroyed at the Siege of Yorktown, thereby causing Britain to lose the War for America. The early 20th century saw the meteoric rise of boxing as a lucrative business opportunity for both promoters and fighters alike and acted as one of the few business ventures that was accessible for both White and Black Americans. In the Reconstruction period, many former slaves or children of slaves found themselves stuck in a perpetual cycle of poverty performing menial labour not far removed from their previous lives as slaves; boxing provided a rare alternative for these men. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, focus has been drawn to the efficacy of synchronous applied music instruction in the networked environment. In March of 2020, all university faculty in higher education across all disciplines were suddenly forced to adapt pedagogy to a co-present networked environment, many with little knowledge or training in the current technologies. Poor audio and video quality, cold unwelcoming video teaching atmosphere, and frustrating user experience created a difficult networked environment for traditional applied studios. The pandemic accelerated the need for both quality online instructional experiences and formalized training for faculty within the areas of …
