Deslenguadas: A Photo Essay On The Performative Remembering Of The Impact Of 1940s Americanization Programs In Northern New Mexico, Yvonne M. Montoya, Fawn-Amber Montoya
International Journal on Responsibility
This photo essay captures the dance performance Deslenguadas by choreographer Yvonne Montoya. Deslenguadas, a dance inspired by a writing of the same name published in Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, is a series of three dances – one duet and two solos. The dances in the series explore the impact the forced loss of the Spanish language had on three generations of one nuevomexicano family from the 1940s to the present day. Through dance, movement, projected animation, and spoken word, the dances explore how each generation internalized racism and shame. At the same time, these generations …

"Have You Met My Lawyer?" And "Making Lists Of What Was Lost", Kirsten Anderson
"Have You Met My Lawyer?" And "Making Lists Of What Was Lost", Kirsten Anderson
Loyola Interdisciplinary Journal of Public Interest Law
The theme of what justice looks like for those experiencing homelessness finds expression in two poems by social justice lawyer and poet Kirsten Anderson. Based on her nearly two decades of representing clients experiencing homelessness, she explores the nature of the client-lawyer relationship in a society where lawyers are usually only available to persons with wealth and power. Both poems explore the consequences of housing not being recognized as a human right—given visible expression in a humanitarian crisis of homelessness in a country where the rent is unaffordable for more than half the population.
The first poem, “Have you met …

Wayward Joy In Queer Femme-Inist Educational Research, Sarah Stapleton, Lindsay Cavanaugh, Jade Crimson Rose Da Costa
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This article draws on our experiences with “Femme Educational Futurities,” a dream-mapping (Author 2, 2023), critical arts-based, participatory-informed project about softness in K–12 schools, to explore the boundaries of queer, femme-inist research. We trace how our attempts to enact research softly (Schwartz, 2020) led us towards wayward joy (Hartman, 2019): a messy affective terrain marked by connection, vulnerability, shame, and hope. For each author, we identify what Applebaum (1995) calls a “stop” moment and explore within each instance the convergence of softness, radical love (hooks, 2000) and tender failure (Halberstam, 2011), and discuss what joy means to us as a …

Whose Right(S)?: Civil Rights Impact Of Cultural Conflicts In The Curriculum, S. David Mitchell
Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development
(Excerpt)
Opponents of anti-woke legislation have challenged the presumption that the topics being taught are divisive or designed to indoctrinate students with a liberal or Left leaning ideology. Instead, they argue that these topics tell the unvarnished history of the United States. Furthermore, opponents have also challenged the asserted legality and validity of anti-woke legislation, arguing that the legislation infringes upon the First Amendment, specifically students’ and teachers’ academic freedom, students’ right to learn, and parents’ right to direct and control the education of their children. Unlike other controversial topics such as sexual education, which are taught in courses that …
Receptional Misunderstandings Of Postdramatic Theatre In China: Starting From The Drama-Theatre Theories Of Peter Szondi And Hans-Thies Lehmann, Sheng Ding
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Although the controversy over the translation of postdramatic theatre and the debate on whether juchang (剧场) can replace xiju (戏剧) in Chinese were sparked by Hans-Thies Lehmann, the idea can be traced back to Peter Szondi. Szondi proposed the concept of a historical category of drama for the study of modern drama— an ideal dramatic paradigm that does not correspond to Renaissance or Classicist dramas. Lehmann expanded on Szondi's concept by dividing drama into three stages: predrama, drama, and postdrama. However, this model does not align with the actual historical development of theatre. Some scholars have adopted Szondi's concept of …
Neo-Avant-Garde And The Critique Of Late Capitalism: On The Political Dimension Of Intermediality, Chang Chen
Neo-Avant-Garde And The Critique Of Late Capitalism: On The Political Dimension Of Intermediality, Chang Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Contemporary intermedial studies primarily focus on the analysis of aesthetic forms, yet the political dimension of intermediality remains underexplored. While intermediality is not inherently political, its intentions and modes of articulation can carry a profound political logic within specific socio-historical contexts. In the aftermath of World War II, confronted with the panoramic dominance of capital, neo-avant-garde art in Europe and North America exhibited a tendency to make art a matter of everyday life, with intermediality as a fundamental form. Through processes of integration, collaboration, and conflict, the diverse attributes of artistic and everyday media structured distinct yet interwoven intermedial formations …
The Conceptual Connotations And Evolutionary Trajectories Of Theatricality, Chengzhou He, Lingbo Fu
The Conceptual Connotations And Evolutionary Trajectories Of Theatricality, Chengzhou He, Lingbo Fu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Theatricality, as a core concept in drama and theatre studies, has continually evolved as its meanings have been shaped by theatrical practices, socio-cultural contexts, and academic discourses. Over time, its scope has expanded beyond the field of theatre into cultural studies and philosophy. Historically, theatricality was often stigmatized in popular perception due to its associations with artifice, exaggeration, and imitation. However, through the successive innovations of realist drama, modernist theatre, and postmodern performance, the concept has been reconstructed, acquiring renewed theoretical and aesthetic value. Since the twentieth century, scholarly engagement with theatricality has developed along two primary trajectories: the theatrical …
Strange And Weird Tales: H.P. Lovecraft And Horror In American History, Serafin Hector Matthews
Strange And Weird Tales: H.P. Lovecraft And Horror In American History, Serafin Hector Matthews
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Author Howard Phillips (H.P.) Lovecraft (1890-1937) of Rhode Island was a transformative figure in American fiction. Hailed by one modern writer as “the twentieth-century horror story’s dark and baroque prince,” Lovecraft wrote over sixty-five works of fiction representing—alongside Clark Ashton Smith, Robert Bloch, and David H. Keller—“the golden age of weird fiction.” Lovecraft, however, enjoyed only modest commercial success during his lifetime, writing for amateur journals and pulp magazines such as The Vagrant, Amazing Stories, and Weird Tales. Most of his stories, then, were not published in hardcover or paperback form until after his death, including what many literary critics …

Developing Empathy In Paramedic Students Using Didactic And Deliberate Practice Education Programs: A Mixed-Methods Study, Nick J. Waltrich, Jade Sheen Phd, Mathew Ling, Melissa O'Shea
Developing Empathy In Paramedic Students Using Didactic And Deliberate Practice Education Programs: A Mixed-Methods Study, Nick J. Waltrich, Jade Sheen Phd, Mathew Ling, Melissa O'Shea
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Paramedics often attend to patients presenting with a mental illness, however research suggests paramedics have difficulties when attending to this patient cohort. Conversely, clinical psychologists receive training that focuses on developing strong therapeutic relationships with their patients through the use of empathy. As research has highlighted that paramedic students are known to demonstrate low levels of empathy, this study aimed to investigate the utility of two education methods used in clinical psychology training, didactic teaching and deliberate practice (DP), to develop the skill of empathy in paramedic students. Method: Students currently enrolled in an Australian paramedic university degree were …
