Himalayan Trauma: Administrative Thrombosis And Citizens’ Response, Robert E. Beazley

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

In this paper, the author uses excerpts from social media postings and traditional media to highlight how various citizen and volunteer responses to the 2015 earthquake helped fill in the gaps created by institutional dysfunction. Further, he shows how these two types of media played a critical role in facilitating communication between grassroots aid initiatives and earthquake affected people and their families and friends, not only in Kathmandu but also in neglected mountainous areas as well. While scholarship on Carrie Mae Weems's series titled From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried often reflects the significance of the work as it relates to the African American experience and the African diaspora, critical discussion downplays the relationship the installation has to institutional critique and social practice. Through the course of this paper, I present extensive research on Weems's series. In order to conduct my investigation, I look to the genesis of the series in 1995 as a response piece to Hidden Witness. The products of the theatre, film, and television industries are becoming increasingly homogenized. The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Much has changed since 1951, when Gian Carlo Menotti composed Amahl and the Night Visitors as the first opera ever written for television. Amahl and the Night Visitors is the story of a miracle that occurs when the Magi stop on their journey to see the Baby Jesus, and it has been a perennial favorite since its first live telecast more than 65 years ago. The Challenge Of Urban Design In Securing Post-Event Legacies Of Olympic Parks, Renata Sanchez, Stephen Essex

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Olympic Parks demand a very distinctive built environment in order to function for their primary purpose, namely to host major sporting competitions. These spaces, however, require substantial reconfiguration in the post-event mode to ensure viable, mixed use and liveable places. This paper evaluates the challenges of transforming Olympic Parks, using evidence from four past hosts: Munich (1972), Sydney (2000), London (2012) and Rio de Janeiro (2016). The discussion raises questions about retaining the ceremonial focus of the Olympic Park and whether a more decentralised model might make the associated urban design and planning legacies more deliverable for future host cities.
