Small Navies And Network-Centric Warfare—Is There A Role?, Paul T. Mitchell Apr 2018

Small Navies And Network-Centric Warfare—Is There A Role?, Paul T. Mitchell

Naval War College Review

The ability of Canadian warships to operate in U.S. aircraft carrier battle groups demonstrates that coalition network-centric naval warfare is possible. It has also shown, however, that the price of admission for coalition navies is high, in terms of technical interoperability, professional trust, and policy—above all, with respect to information transfer.

‘Has Anyone Here Seen Amos?’ – Re-Establishing ‘Prophetic Imagination’ At The Centre Of Religious Education And Formation, Peter Mudge, Daniel J. Fleming Apr 2018

‘Has Anyone Here Seen Amos?’ – Re-Establishing ‘Prophetic Imagination’ At The Centre Of Religious Education And Formation, Peter Mudge, Daniel J. Fleming

eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia

In 1989 Australian author and illustrator Bob Graham published a children’s book entitled Has anyone here seen William? This article seeks to construct a parallel narrative in relation to the category of the prophet, with a particular focus on the need to engage in prophetic imagination within the twin contexts of religious education (hereafter R.E.) and formation. In doing so it also makes reference to one of the archetypical biblical prophets - Amos. The article’s primary interlocutor is scripture scholar Walter Brueggemann (1982, 2002a, 2002b) who has written on topics as diverse as scripture exegesis and the theology of pain …

Challenges In Day-To-Day Midwifery Practice; A Qualitative Study From A Regional Referral Hospital In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Hanna Strømholt Bremnes, Åsil Kjøl Wiig, Muzdalfat Abeid, Elisabeth Darj Apr 2018

Challenges In Day-To-Day Midwifery Practice; A Qualitative Study From A Regional Referral Hospital In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Hanna Strømholt Bremnes, Åsil Kjøl Wiig, Muzdalfat Abeid, Elisabeth Darj

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa

Background:

Maternal and infant mortality rates in Tanzania have decreased over the past decades, but remain high. One of the challenges the country faces, is the lack of skilled health care workers. High fertility rates make midwives and their patients particularly susceptible to stress as a result of understaffing.

Objective:

This paper explores the challenges midwives face in their day-to-day practice at a regional referral hospital in Tanzania, and investigates which measures the midwives themselves find necessary to implement to improve their situation.

Methods:

A qualitative study design with focus group discussions (FGDs) was employed to explore which challenges the …

Paul Hindemith's Cello Concerto (1940): A Short History And An Ongoing Personal Quest Toward Its Comprehension, Mastery, And Performance, Eunbi Kim Apr 2018

Paul Hindemith's Cello Concerto (1940): A Short History And An Ongoing Personal Quest Toward Its Comprehension, Mastery, And Performance, Eunbi Kim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

ABSTRACT

I was introduced Paul Hindemith’s Cello Concerto (1940) in 2015, my first year as a Doctoral Student. Admittedly, this piece was not very attractive to me. However, I tried to embrace this work, and experience it as a new adventure in ear training, technical challenge and style. Several weeks later, after many frustrating hours of practice, I closed this music because so many elements of this composer’s sound were unfamiliar and foreign to me, to which I could not easily relate. Even though I had listened and examined this work for these initial weeks, I felt horribly under-prepared, musically …

Raeder Versus Wegener—Conflict In German Naval Strategy, Kenneth P. Hansen Apr 2018

Raeder Versus Wegener—Conflict In German Naval Strategy, Kenneth P. Hansen

Naval War College Review

German naval thought between the world wars was defined by a dispute between two distinguished officers: one who critiqued German naval performance in the conflict just ended, the other obliged to meet the very different realities of the war to come. Neither was wholly wrong or entirely correct; the disagreement produced concepts that mark naval doctrine today.

Transforming The Navy, Peter J. Dombrowski, Andrew L. Ross Apr 2018

Transforming The Navy, Peter J. Dombrowski, Andrew L. Ross

Naval War College Review

Judged against the expectations created by President Bush and his defense team, the Navy’s transformation enterprise falls short. However, no compelling strategic rationale for military transformation has yet been articulated. A revolution in military affairs is not required for the maintenance of U.S. military dominance specifically or American primacy generally, or for fighting and winning the global war on terror.
