Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

The purpose of this project is to explore the inevitable intertwining of the worlds of dance and disability. It investigates what can happen when a group of people of all abilities use movement as a source of connection. This project was based on a nine minute dance piece created over a seven month period with rehearsals once a week for three hours sessions. The final piece consisted of seven dancers, five of whom had intellectual and developmental disabilities. The performance utilized improvisation, discussions, choreography, and contact work as tools for the creative process. The intent of the piece was to …

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra returns to Kennesaw State University to tackle classical symphonies by two big personalities and feature KSU's own as soloist. The spirit of 18th-century composer Franz Joseph Haydn hovers over this concert led by conductor Carlo Rizzi. 20th century Russian Sergei Prokofiev pays homage to Haydn in his nimble and puckish "Classical" Symphony while Beethoven, a cantankerous student of Haydn, echoed the master in his sunny and explosively exuberant Symphony No. 2 one hundred years earlier. Elizabeth Koch Tiscione, ASO Principal Oboe and KSU Artist-in-Residence, solos in Mozart's Oboe Concerto.

Throughout the two decades prior to the Great War, aristocratic life and luxury was in steady decline in the British dominions, as economic historian David Cannadine argues. A war on landowners by the lower classes and a new democratization threatened to end the prestige of families grounded in the aristocracy. “A Singing Army Is A Fighting Army”: American Soldiers’ Songs And The Training Camp Experience In World War I, Maci Reed

This paper analyzes the impact of the camp music program on American participants in World War I. First, it describes the formation and purpose of the Commission on Training Camp Activities (CTCA). This was a commission developed within the War Department in 1917 that was tasked with raising and maintaining troop morale by organizing constructive recreational activities, such as the music division. Second, this paper explores the soldiers’ experiences with song and how they accepted the practice of singing and used it as a form of expression. “Les Éléments de l’Empire: Cultural Construction and Civilization in 19th Century French Algeria” examines the mentality behind the 19th century colonization of French Algeria, via a French museum established in Algiers in 1838. French documents from the period pertaining to the museum overwhelmingly reveal an association between retrieving artifacts from the Roman Empire and establishing the French Empire in Algeria. Yet “indigenous” artifacts receive progressively greater attention as colonization proceeds. The museum’s founder, Adrien Berbrugger, plays a particularly important role, as does the museum’s connection to the academic community and the colonial administration. The system that he created provides the foundation for a majority of the different theories that have been introduced to theatrical practices in the 20th and 21st centuries. Among those intrigued by Stanislavsky’s work were the founding members of the seminal Group Theatre. These members worked together to create new American theories that are directly related to the core teaching of Stanislavsky. This paper explores the formative years of the British National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty from its founding in 1895 to 1938. It specifically investigates the rise of the Trust’s interest in preserving Britain’s coastline, which was originally an afterthought when compared to other areas of natural beauty. Ultimately, the years between 1895 and 1938 proved extremely pivotal in the development of the Trust’s preservationist ethic in its policy approach towards protecting coastline and set the stage for the sweeping coastal environmental movement that would take place in 1965 with Operation Neptune.

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

Waging a highly irregular war — an insurgency — in Northeast Nigeria since September 2010, Boko Haram over the years has escalated as a threat form. By 2014, this threat extended beyond Nigeria’s borders; and by 2017, thousands of people had become casualties of the conflict; with millions displaced in Northeast Nigeria. Boko Haram however did not necessarily achieve this threat escalation by fighting and defeating the Nigerian military on the battlefield. A large part of Boko Haram’s calculations, rather, have been focused on its covert front and on war avoidance altogether. Indeed, covert tactics have been the main vehicle …

The African continent has borne the brunt of inter-ethnic and intra-ethnic conflicts. Consequently, there are many efforts aimed at rebuilding societies torn apart by conflicts in the African continent. This paper posits that non-state actors play great roles in fostering grassroots peace initiatives. This study examines the role of non-state actors in promoting peacebuilding among women in Mount Elgon region in Kenya following the aftermath of the 2006-2008 intra-ethnic conflict between the Soy and Ndorobo[1] clans of the Sabaot community. The conflict led to the formation of the Sabaot Land Defence force which inflicted harm on the residents. Furthermore, …

The University of Dayton Department of Computer Science opened a new set of virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) labs during the spring 2018 semester to expand its capability in researching and developing applications for virtual and augmented reality systems. The new facility in the former Music and Theatre Building expands the department's access to VR technology to three fully functioning labs with a variety of systems.

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

This will be my presentation given to theology faculty on Scholarship and Creativity Day required for the Theology Capstone course. I will be discussing the idea that when doing theology in a theatrical mode, it becomes a way to focus on God working in the world and our call as the audience to take part in the performance. Because God does not just exist in the abstract, but makes Godself known through the senses, theatre, as a sensual art, becomes the perfect mode to explore and make relevant God’s divine revelation.
