Revealing The Re-Transformation Of 9 Summers 10 Autumns, Alberta Natasia Adji

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

9 Summers 10 Autumns (2011) is an autobiographical novel about a young man from a small city of Batu who later succeeds in pursuing his dream by working in the United States. The novel was written based on Iwan Setyawan’s life story and it was made into a movie by the same title in 2013. Two years later, the movie was adapted into an augmented motion picture hinted illustrative book which combines novel, comic, app, and movie together. This phenomenon of re-transformation of a literary work is said to be the first of its kind in Indonesia and has somewhat …

Nusantara Interaction The Case Of Joget As A Trans-Cultural Entertainment, Julianti Parani Apr 2018

Nusantara Interaction The Case Of Joget As A Trans-Cultural Entertainment, Julianti Parani

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

The focus of discussion in this paper is joget as a dance which embodies the concept of Nusantara (Indonesian archipelago), which has undergone much development from the past to the present. Beginning as an entertaining social dance in various Southeast Asian countries, joget became a customary form of entertainment in the whole context of Nusantara as a region. Surprisingly, it has also inspired new genres and types of traditional dances for centuries. Around 1920s to 1930s, it was the most popular form of dance in many halls of entertainment in Indonesia, Singapore, and the Malay Peninsula. Joget was the most …

Historically, communal places have been used as social interaction spaces and growth places. Ray Oldenburg, an American urban sociologist, names this communal place bringing people and communities together as the third place. Currently, there is a lack of an experiential place that serves nontraditional students on the University of Memphis main campus. This thesis creates a third place for nontraditional students which nurtures growth, connections, accountability, acceptance, and diversity, through design attuned to human senses. This thesis creates a Resource Center and Childcare Center for nontraditional students with the help of the following ideological philosophies: Third Place by Ray Oldenburg, …

Classical Literature And The Retroaction Of Socialist Ideology—The Sovietization Of A Medieval Georgian Epic Poem And Its Mysterious Author, Diego Benning Wang Apr 2018

Classical Literature And The Retroaction Of Socialist Ideology—The Sovietization Of A Medieval Georgian Epic Poem And Its Mysterious Author, Diego Benning Wang

Madison Historical Review

Shota Rustaveli, presumed author of the medieval Georgian epic poem vepkhistqaosani (The Knight in the Panther's Skin), was one of the most celebrated cultural and historical figures in Soviet Georgia. However, not much is known about Rustaveli apart from his work. In this essay, I argue that a series of policies under the Soviet government transformed Rustaveli into a national symbol of Georgia, but the celebration of Rustaveli and his poem scarcely deviated from the ideological guidelines of the Soviet state. In discussing the impact and legacy of the Soviet promotion of Rustaveli, I purport to highlight the "national in …

Hiding Behind The Closet Door: Representations Of The Homosexual Experience In A Streetcar Named Desire, Antonia Piccirillo Apr 2018

Hiding Behind The Closet Door: Representations Of The Homosexual Experience In A Streetcar Named Desire, Antonia Piccirillo

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

Themes related to homosexuality and the homosexual experience are interwoven in many layers throughout Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. This research paper analyzes contemporary commentary on homosexuality from the 1940s and ‘50s, Blanche’s experiences with light and perception, and moments of homosociality between the male poker players, to interpret how the homosexual experience is represented and exposed on stage through the two main characters in the play, Blanche and Stanley. Williams uses a heteronormative context to portray the homosexual experience, thus mirroring the way gay men had to navigate life in the closet while presenting to the public …

“Alexander Hamilton Embodies Hip Hop.”: The Words That Sparked A Revolution, Lindsey Garrant

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

This paper focuses on Alexander Hamilton, one of the most influential founding fathers, and how he embodies a genre of music known as hip hop. There are many aspects of hip hop culture that Alexander Hamilton embodied. The examples of hip hop culture used in this article are the Tupac Shakur and Biggie Small rivalry, Nas writing his way out of the Queens housing project, the “Ten Crack Commandments”, and “Fight the Power” by Public Enemy. Examples from Alexander Hamilton’s life consist of his rivalry with Aaron Burr, writing his way out of poverty, the duel code of honor, the …

Drama Therapy And Transgender Adolescents, Ryan Lisman Apr 2018

Drama Therapy And Transgender Adolescents, Ryan Lisman

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Transgender adolescents in the United States are currently a vulnerable population that often regularly face discrimination and are at a high risk for hate crimes (Center of Excellence for Transgender Health, 2016). Developing and implementing therapeutic interventions and models for working with transgender adolescents is essential at this time. In American society, there has recently been a cultural shift towards a greater sense of acceptance for the LGBTQ community (Benson, 2013), but within that, the transgender community has been consistently left behind in many aspects of progress that LGB (Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual) people have benefited from (Benson, 2013). There …

Flow, Creativity And Autism Spectrum Disorder: Creatively Supporting Development And Pro-Social Behavior In Children With Asd, Mehdi Raoufi Apr 2018

Flow, Creativity And Autism Spectrum Disorder: Creatively Supporting Development And Pro-Social Behavior In Children With Asd, Mehdi Raoufi

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This literature review is an analysis of the literature exploring the use of expressive arts modalities with children living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with a focus on emotional regulation and behavior modification. Historically, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been the standard in terms of behavior modification for this population, but current research and qualitative inquiries suggested that members of this population need more support in emotional regulation and communication than ABA is able to provide. Using an intermodal arts-based method developmentally promotes social and communication abilities in children with ASD. Further, channeling stereotypic behaviors into creative flow can regulate, …

The Effect Of Smartphones On Anxiety: An Attachment Issue Or Fear Of Missing Out?, Kelly Mannion Apr 2018

The Effect Of Smartphones On Anxiety: An Attachment Issue Or Fear Of Missing Out?, Kelly Mannion

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Previous research shows that college students tend to experience increased anxiety when they are separated from their smartphone. This anxiety has been suggested to be due to attachment, where college students have formed an attachment to their smartphone. Another explanation for this anxiety is the fear of missing out (FoMO), where college students experience worry when they cannot check in with their friends. No existing study to my knowledge has simultaneously examined the separate impact of attachment to phones and FoMO on anxiety levels, particularly during a stressful situation. The current study examines the separate and combined impacts of FoMO …
