Assessment Of Microbial Contamination On High-Touch Public Surfaces And Its Implications For Community Health: A Cross-Sectional Study From Urban South India, Muhammed Suhail S

Objectives High-contact public surfaces, such as bus seatbacks, mall escalator belts, and theater armrests, may act as reservoirs of opportunistic and antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms, posing a significant but underreported risk to community health. In urban environments like Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, surface-level microbial surveillance remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to assess the magnitude, composition, and density of microbial contaminants on commonly touched surfaces across transit and commercial hubs.

Welsh writer Saunders Lewis was, just as his almost exact contemporary J.R.R.Tolkien, a politically conservative Catholic with a deep interest in medieval myths. Both authors wrote fantasy based on Celtic tales, such as Lewis's play Blodeuwedd and Tolkien's poem The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun. While the latter follows the dicta of Tolkien's own "On Fairy-stories," Lewis created a more modernist work. Despite biographical and ideological similarities, the two approached their sources differently. Tolkien looked for unifying aesthetic principles that he called "unhazy unromantic momentariness," while Lewis used the traditional material to escape the constraints of romantic and realistic …

This article provides a supportive way to address the marginalization of social studies by teaching inquiry through the use of a template. Inquiry based learning encourages students to make real-world connections by engaging in problem solving and exploration through research. It fosters higher level skills like critical thinking, evaluation, and synthesis of knowledge through experiential learning (Bell, Urhahne, Schanze and Ploetzner 2009). Using inquiry to investigate social studies topics encourages the use of sources from diverse perspectives to understand the complete picture of the event being researched. Though there are studies around Duterte’s war on drugs and human rights violations, scholarship focusing on the relationship between Duterte’s politics and gender, particularly queerness and kabaklaan, is limited despite his frequent derogatory use of bakla, gay, or homosexual to demean rivals and critics. This article analyzes Jun Lana’s Big Night! (2021) through the Filipino concept of batak—intoxication, being forcibly dragged, and musculature—to examine the intersections of queerness, state violence, and survival in Rodrigo Duterte’s “War on Drugs.” Through close readings of key scenes, the article maps how batak operates as a framework for understanding the bakla’s shifting position: …

Service designers often encounter power dynamics that shape their role in enabling change. This study explores how and why designers experience power in practice, drawing on ecological systems theory (EST) to map experiences gathered through a case study of five focus groups with international practitioners. Leverage analysis is then used to conceptualise these insights. In the context of declining sustainability in traditional placemaking practices, this study explores how transmedia storytelling, when integrated with service design logic, can function as a replicable and adaptive mechanism for community activation. Grounded in a media–platform–role framework, this research takes Alipay’s Life as Theater project as a case study to examine how narrative-driven tasks, distributed media touchpoints, and platform-mediated coordination work together to mobilize user participation. Service design is increasingly recognized as a valuable contributor to user-centred innovation in the public sector. However, a lack of focus on public servants’ emotional experiences may limit its impact. This paper introduces “experiential insighting” as a human-centred approach to fostering empathy and understanding of bureaucrats’ lived experiences within the Norwegian public sector. In 2024, service design master’s students transposed these experiences into interactive installations, which were later presented at a conference. Feedback from policymakers and bureaucrats suggests that the experiential insighting installations effectively communicated key experiences, fostering empathy, stimulating dialogue, and enrichening communication. As Milan public universities compete globally to attract economic capital and student flows, they simultaneously face growing challenges in addressing the housing affordability crisis affecting their student populations. This paper reflects on the design tensions emerging within the service ecosystem of Politecnico di Milano, starting from the shortcomings encountered during the development of the multidisciplinary research-action project StudMIHome: Students Living in Milan; a study on student housing conducted by three research departments of the university, with the objective of prototyping and testing a housing orientation service for students.

Cultivating Cross-Cultural Community Through Counter-Storying: The Power+Place Collaborative, Danielle Lake, Sandy Marshall

ServDes Conference Series

This article offers a feminist pragmatist vision for service design educators and practitioners that seeks to cultivate participatory place-based systemic change through cross-cultural and intergenerational counter-storytelling efforts. After summarizing the story of the Power+Place Collaborative as a service design case study, the article outlines findings from a four-year, mixed-method study. Findings from this initiative indicate that feminist pragmatist practices can cultivate significant changes across social systems when such service design initiatives are sustained over time. Based on study findings, the article concludes by recommending a range of strategies found to be most useful for scaling cross-sector, participatory systems change.
