Historians have increasingly examined how media other than yellow journalism helped manufacture consent for American imperialism during the Spanish-American War, yet commercial sheet music—despite its ubiquity at the time—remains overlooked. This study addresses that gap by analyzing fifty pieces of sheet music published around the period, employing a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative, qualitative, and comparative media analysis. The corpus reveals four dominant themes: memorializing the sinking of the Maine; Cuban “liberation” rhetoric that often referenced American ownership or influence over the island; military hero worship that personalized and justified expansion; and messages of national unity that permitted overseas territorial …

The Formation And Dynamics Of Colonial “Lived Spaces” : Urban Space And Society In Colonial Hanoi, 1883–1916, Nam Khanh Hoang '25
Student Research
This study examines the nuanced experiences and perceptions of urban space among different social groups in colonial Hanoi in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by analyzing the French colonial agendas, as reflected through modern urban planning and practices, and its reception among the colonial urban inhabitants, as suggested through their responses to the Statue of Liberty—a colonial urban monument. While existing scholarship has often framed colonial cities as stages for consolidating imperial power, introducing Western ideals of modernity, and forming systems of oppression and exploitation against colonial subjects, it has often overlooked the perceptions and experiences of colonial …

Professional Practices (ART 399)
I work in oil paint, as well as clay. These mediums allow for expressive and textured application of medium. My love for ceramic work started in a 6th grade ceramics class and has continued to grow during my time at Murray State. Clay as a medium lends itself to the themes of my work, human and bodily experiences. Clay keeps a record of every touch and mark, creating a deeper connection between myself, the work, and viewer. My ceramic work is handbuilt and intentionally related to the figure/body. Finished pieces are rarely glazed and are instead treated with oxide or …

The Quest For Connection In A Cold And Isolated World: A Psychoanalytical Study On Edward Albee's 'The Zoo Story', Abdulmajeed Abdulqadir Saeed Alhanash
The Quest For Connection In A Cold And Isolated World: A Psychoanalytical Study On Edward Albee's 'The Zoo Story', Abdulmajeed Abdulqadir Saeed Alhanash
UB Journal for Humanities
This research paper explores the theme of connection in a cold and isolated world through a psychoanalytical lens. It specifically focusses on Edward Albee's one-act play, The Zoo Story, examining how the characters' struggles with loneliness, alienation, and detachment reflect the broader human condition. It illuminates the underlying psychological motivations, anxieties, and desires that shape their actions and relationships. The psychological approach is used to analyze the social isolation and loneliness of characters in the play. Analyzing this theme psychologically illuminates the factors contributing to Jerry’s sense of isolation: lack of meaningful social connections, societal pressures, and personal experiences that …

'The Rest Is Silence': Reframing Stasis As Integral To Creative Practice, Corinna Di Niro, Pablo Muslera
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
This duoethnographic study examines the relationship between motion and stasis in creative practice through the lens of two creative educators working in postgraduate and undergraduate Creative Industries. Drawing on our combined experiences as practitioners and educators at SAE University College, we explore how creative blockages can be reframed as productive rather than problematic, challenging dominant productivity paradigms in contemporary creative industries and education. Through structured dialogic exchange, we investigate three interconnected themes: the rhythmic nature of creative practice, the pedagogical value of embracing productive stasis, and the tension between institutional timelines and creative development. We consider how encouraging SAE creative …

Rewriting Hell: Adaptation, Hope, And The 'American Dream' In Practice-As-Research, Karli Jean Lonnquist
Rewriting Hell: Adaptation, Hope, And The 'American Dream' In Practice-As-Research, Karli Jean Lonnquist
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Contemporary theatrical adaptation involves deconstructing, reimagining, and rewriting historical plays for modern audiences. Adaptation appropriates theatrical conventions, changes the lens through which the audience may view the play, and offers new entry points into thinking and practice. Adaptation asks, “why this source as theatre now?” and proposes that history provides tools for engagement with contemporary issues. By employing a Practice as Research methodology, which positions creative processes such as script development, rehearsal, or play development as research methods, I investigated the art of historical adaptation. I adapted No Exit, a 1945 existentialist play by Jean-Paul Sartre, into a new play …
Defining Immersive Theatre Creation For Stage Managers’ Benefit, Alivia Infeld
Defining Immersive Theatre Creation For Stage Managers’ Benefit, Alivia Infeld
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Creating immersive theatre differs from traditional theatre in its use of found spaces that lack visual barriers between the audience and the performers. Additionally, the order of scenes are performed in can change for each performance. The delineation of scenes is often defined by a change in location or scheduled time. For these reasons and more, immersive theatre presents many unique challenges for artists working in this medium. In particular, the role of stage managers is complicated by the opportunity for complications inherent in performances featuring audience interaction in close quarters. Audience behavior is at once both an unknown variable …

Animals In Entertainment: Ethical Considerations, Industry Regulations, Incidents, And The Future Of Animal Performers, Kendyll Conlisk
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Some of our favorite films, theatre productions, and live performances involve animals. A Dog's Purpose, Annie, Barnum and Bailey circus; the list is endless. But have you ever wondered, "How do they train them?" and "Is this benefiting or harming the animals?" Animals in entertainment have a long history dating back to ancient civilizations. Research done by World Animal Protection found that three out of four tourist animal attractions involve some form of animal abuse, and up to 550,000 animals around the world suffer due to these cruel attractions for human amusement. This does not imply that all animals used …
Diary Of A Young Actress: An Inquiry Into Failure, Resilience, And The Actor’S Journey, Keira Biala
Diary Of A Young Actress: An Inquiry Into Failure, Resilience, And The Actor’S Journey, Keira Biala
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
What is the journey? For some, it may be a road to a physical destination. For others like myself, it is a pathway containing failures such as rejection and successes such as booking roles. Sometimes, these failures can challenge our sense of self, leading to unhealthy coping mechanisms. As a deep exploration of self-comparison, self-worth, and rejection in people’s artistic and non-artistic journeys, I created an album called Diary of a Young Actress consisting of self-written songs about these three topics when it comes to my acting journey. Moreover, I read books and articles about people’s perspectives on their journeys …
Director-Dramaturg And Director-Actor Relationship In Theatre, Fiona Gllavica
Director-Dramaturg And Director-Actor Relationship In Theatre, Fiona Gllavica
International Journal of Business and Technology
The research object in this paper is the symbiotic relationship between the stage director and the playwright, as well as the stage director and the actor in the theater. The genesis of theater, has its roots in religion and ritual. Since the Antiquity, the actresses through their stage appearances, has introduced the world of gods and people, shoëing different dilemmas, but not offering solutions for them. Debates on society, presented through theatrical works, in front of the public, in different periods of time, are still debatable. Theatrical art, stage art, uses the ëord and body language to convey the message …
