This document is a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the Master of Fine Arts degree in theatre. It is a detailed account of author Jared Shofstall’s technical direction process for Minnesota State University, Mankato’s production of Shakespeare in Love in the fall of 2019. This thesis chronicles the author’s process from pre-production through post production in five chapters: an early production analysis and a process development analysis. Appendices and works cited are included.

Exploring The Effects Of Creativity And Student Success On Community College Stem Students Taking Fine Arts Courses, Jimmy Leduc

This study examined overall success and creativity in students taking STEM courses at a Midwestern community college. There were four hypotheses in this study. The first was that STEM majors who had taken one or more fine arts courses would report a higher GPA than STEM majors who have not taken fine arts courses. The second was that there would be a positive correlation among STEM majors between the number of fine arts courses taken and grade point average. The third is that STEM majors who had taken one or more fine arts courses would demonstrate greater creativity than STEM …

Women Dancers Of Color Decolonizing Knowledge Production Through Performance, Mio Yoshizaki

This thesis focuses on how women dancers of color (WDoC) decolonize the process of knowledge production through performance. Through a feminist perspective, this research analyzes the ways WDoC use dance and movement to share their voices as women of color. The American concert dance industry was established based on Western perspectives. When WDoC create performances about their own lived experiences, dance plays a role in decolonizing the process of knowledge production by portraying their unique perspectives and culture through movement. In the midst of a tight labor market and increased inflation, freedom of movement for employees is a critical right, allowing individuals to seek out the best employment opportunities. Freedom to change jobs, without non-compete restrictions, has a positive impact on innovation and technological progress, enabling the best and brightest minds to migrate to the most innovative employers paying the best wages and offering respectful treatment in the workplace. Educators in academic theatre programs, whether queer or non-queer, trans or cisgender, may not intentionally consider queerness in their pedagogical practices. What follows is an examination of current issues in academia that can affect queer students negatively and disproportionately. Anecdotal evidence is provided to demonstrate different issues that may be present in the classroom experiences of queer students. The Stanislavski system is critiqued through a contemporary, queer lens to locate possible shortcomings in the acting technique when it is applied by queer performers. Queer alternatives to the Stanislavski system are vetted and offered to queer students who might seek something …

The Hart Career Center is responsible for producing an annual First Destination (graduate) survey that tracks the post-graduate activity of our students within a six-month window of commencement. Following this collection period, we work to produce a report that provides our university community with vital information about the success of our graduates and allows us to address questions posed by prospective students and families. Middle school students (Grades 6-8) face a unique set of challenges. Add a gifted and talented (GT) identification, and the need for differentiation in instruction for the exceptional adolescent becomes critical. This research focused on specific practices such as ability grouping, curriculum compaction, providing students choice, problem-based learning, and professional development among others in a primarily rural school district. This mixed methods research used an explanatory sequential design and sought to examine what practices are being used in a middle school GT sixth-grade science classroom using a survey instrument to assess frequency of practice. Curartistry : Curating Everyday Artistry In Bangkok, Chittawadi Chitrabongs

How can architecture be taught internationally, beyond the neocolonialist tendency of European-based international exchange programs? Curartistry, a method of curating everyday artistry in Bangkok, is used to achieve bilateral exchanges in art and architectural education between teachers and students of different nationalities. We offer interpretations of late-nineteenth-century and post-war ideas of “everyday life,” based especially on Charles Baudelaire’s “The Painter of Modern Life,” Henry Lefebvre’s “Critique of Everyday Life,” Maurice Blanchot and Susan Hanson’s “Everyday Speech,” and Walter Benjamin’s “On Some Motifs in Baudelaire.”  Their ideas grew out of their experiences in Western European metropolises, and continue to reflect similar …

Eight middle- and high-school Computer Science (CS) teachers in San Diego County were interviewed about the major challenges their students commonly encounter in learning computer programming. We identified strategic design opportunities -- that is, challenges and needs that can be addressed in innovative ways through the affordances of Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR). Thematic Analysis of the interviews yielded six thematic clusters: Tools for Learning, Visualization and Representation, Pedagogical Approaches, Classroom Culture, Motivation, and Community Connections. Within the theme of visualization, focal clusters centered on visualizing problem spaces and using metaphors to explain computational concepts, indicating that an AR/VR coding …

Authors describe course-embedded research experiences at a diverse, rural, regional university. Emphasizing the capacity for conventional teaching and learning in first-year honors composition, these experiences provide relationshiprich education through faculty and peer mentorships. Positing that first-year honors composition is undervalued as a means for establishing programmatic foundations that resonate with students throughout their honors experience, the authors reinforce its importance as a place for disciplinary research and thus for opportunities in mentoring. By addressing an urgent need for mentoring underrepresented students, the authors consider how a research-based first-year honors composition course might help such students make meaningful disciplinary connections. งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงสร้างสรรค์ โดยระเบียบวิธีวิจัยที่ใช้ แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ขั้นตอน ได้แก่ 1. การศึกษาแนวคิดจากกรณีตัวอย่างนิทรรศการที่เกี่ยวกับเศรษฐกิจสร้างสรรค์และนิทรรศการที่ประยุกต์ใช้ทรานส์มีเดียจากคลังข้อมูลของศูนย์ออกแบบงานสร้างสรรค์ (Creative Economic Agency) รวมถึงการสัมภาษณ์เพื่อสอบถามถึงเบื้องหลังในการออกแบบนิทรรศการเพื่อส่งเสริมอุตสาหกรรมสร้างสรรค์ 2.การออกแบบนิทรรศการเชิงทดลอง ซึ่งมีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับเศรษฐกิจสร้างสรรค์โดยเฉพาะบริบทดนตรีทางเลือก โดยประยุกต์ใช้แนวคิดทรานส์มีเดียในการเล่าเรื่อง 3.การทดสอบประสิทธิภาพของการออกแบบโดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ (qualitative research) ผ่านการสัมภาษณ์กลุ่มผู้เข้าชมนิทรรศการ และการสัมภาษณ์รายบุคคลจากผู้เชี่ยวชาญในด้านสื่อและนิทรรศการ โดยวิเคราะห์ เชื่อมโยง และสรุปผล ผลการวิจัยพบว่า นิทรรศการที่เล่าเรื่องแบบทรานส์มีเดีย อาศัยคุณลักษณะสองประการ ได้แก่ การปฏิสัมพันธ์ (interactive) และ ความดื่มด่ำ (immersive) เพื่อนำผู้ชมนำไปสู่การสร้างพื้นที่แห่งการมีส่วนร่วม ในด้านการรับรู้เนื้อหาที่เกี่ยวกับอุตสาหกรรมดนตรีนอกกระแส พบว่า ผู้ชมส่วนใหญ่สามารถเข้าใจเนื้อหาที่เกี่ยวกับดนตรีนอกกระแส โดยให้ความสนใจกับเนื้อหาที่สร้างสรรค์โดยผู้ชมคนอื่น โดยนอกจากการสื่อสารจะนำไปสู่การรับรู้ความหลากหลายของดนตรีนอกกระแสแล้ว เรื่องเล่าที่ประกฎในนิทรรศการยังนำไปสู่ข้อถกเถียงทางสังคม (public discussion) ที่เปิดประเด็นที่เกี่ยวข้องกับข้อถกเถียงในเชิงโครงสร้างของอุตสาหกรรมดนตรีในบริบทของไทย

Sentimental Novels And Anti-Sentimental Heroines : Womanhood Redefined In Late Eighteenth-Century British Novels, Oak Joo Yap

Protagonists in the eighteenth-century British sentimental novel persevere in the face of extreme misery to remain chaste or to uphold their moral principles as dictated by convention. These characters excessive sentiments were viewed as highly desirable even by many men. Yet at the same time, there was considerable resistance against sentimental novels as they were increasingly denounced for encouraging women to indulge in “overstretched sensibility.” Highlighting the unjust treatment of women rather than their virtues in enduring it, novels with an anti-sentimental stance present independent heroines who question traditional female gender norms or rebel against authority in the spirit of …
