Two Trans-Atlantic Divorce Novels: In Camilla, Elizabeth Robins Counters Edith Wharton’S The Custom Of The Country, Joanne E. Gates
Two Trans-Atlantic Divorce Novels: In Camilla, Elizabeth Robins Counters Edith Wharton’S The Custom Of The Country, Joanne E. Gates
Presentations, Proceedings & Performances
This paper argues that Elizabeth Robins' reading of The Custom of the Country (recorded in her diary, 25 November 1913) impacted the way Robins drafted her very next novel, Camilla. Unlike Wharton’s Undine, whose careers with men might be characterized by the sequence of her last names (Spragg Moffatt, Marvell, de Chelles, Moffatt), Camilla undertakes one long reflective flashback on her early life with her ex-husband, Leroy Trenholme, as she crosses the Atlantic, east to west, having been proposed to by a deeply caring and comforting Englishman. This reliving of the unraveling of her marriage (especially the scene of …

Janet Malcolm And Me: The Biographer Enters Her Book: Some Post-Modern Reflections On The Personal Of The Critical In Recent Biographies Of Women Writers, Joanne E. Gates
Presentations, Proceedings & Performances
Largely because publishers resist the expenses of precise and plentiful documentation, contemporary biography is a slippery, sometimes stale, but sometimes electrifying discipline. If any recent biographical project deserves further attention and analysis, it is Janet Malcolm's three-part biography of Sylvia Plath, first appearing in the August 23 and 30, 1993 double issue of the New Yorker and now published in book form as The Silent Woman: Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes (Knopf, 1994). With the perspective of an autobiographer examining (yet never mentioning) the incendiary implications of her own "missing tapes" incident which led to the New Yorker's defense of …
Anonymity As A Bridge From Actress To Author: The Case Of Elizabeth Robins, Joanne E. Gates
Anonymity As A Bridge From Actress To Author: The Case Of Elizabeth Robins, Joanne E. Gates
Presentations, Proceedings & Performances
Any scholar working on the origins of the feminist journey of the actress turned writer Elizabeth Robins ought to be aware of her two earliest short works of fiction she wrote and published in The New Review under nearly perfect anonymity. This paper will profile these two earlier stories, published in 1894 even before her first novel, George Mandeville's Husband, attracted attention when it appeared under her perhaps thinly disguised pseudonym, C. E. Raimond.
Robins saw the potential and, yes, to her mind, the necessity, of establishing herself as a writer so that she could more securely support herself. …

Adorno, Beckett…Wagner, Artaud: Reflections On Stefan Sorgner’S Philosophy Of Posthuman Art, Russell Kilbourn
Adorno, Beckett…Wagner, Artaud: Reflections On Stefan Sorgner’S Philosophy Of Posthuman Art, Russell Kilbourn
English and Film Studies Faculty Publications
This essay reflects on the question of posthuman(ist) art by way of Stefan Sorgner’s book, Philosophy of Posthuman Art, which makes an important initial contribution to the nascent investigation of the significance of creative and imaginative expression from a critical posthumanist perspective. From the understanding that we cannot (yet) do without the subject as ground of the self, I elaborate a theory of the dynamic ‘subjective trinity’ (self, other, and transcendent subject) underpinning the occidental aesthetic experience construed in visual-spatial terms, exemplified in the cinema. From this basis I explore two possible avenues of posthumanist aesthetic expression: First, the secular …
Mapping Seattle’S Cultural Assets: Using Data From The Arts Ecosystem Research Project To Inform Future Arts Leaders, Stefanie Fatooh
Mapping Seattle’S Cultural Assets: Using Data From The Arts Ecosystem Research Project To Inform Future Arts Leaders, Stefanie Fatooh
Mapping Seattle's Cultural Assets
The mapping of cultural assets has emerged as an evolution in mapping, bringing together “both qualitative and quantitative mapping of cultures” in order to create a cultural inventory that allows for multi-faceted planning efforts (Duxbury, et al., 2015, p. 7). By placing the Seattle area arts organizations documented by the Arts Ecosystem Research Project (AERP) onto a map organized by decade, arts researchers can gain a valuable tool to utilize in the practice of Sankofa, which can be simply defined as “learning from or building on the past” (Quarcoo, 1972, as cited in Temple, 2010, p. 127). Examining this map …

Ishita – Atemporality In Bemba Eco-Existentialism, Chammah J. Kaunda
Ishita – Atemporality In Bemba Eco-Existentialism, Chammah J. Kaunda
Zambia Social Science Journal
This article delineates Bemba eco-existentialism of atemporality. It demonstrates inshita as lived which is deeply entrenched in the quest to become Lesa (God). Bemba atemporality is never conceived in terms of the past or the future. Rather, as the locus of intercourse, a critical site of spiritual interaction, transaction, and exchange aimed at actualizing equilibrium of all vital relationships that make up the cosmos. In this way, inshita is lived and a manifestation of meaningful actions that promote flourishing-becoming of all things.

A plethora of catastrophic disasters resulting in numerous life-losses at sea can be noted, while searching and studying Maritime History. On a positive notion, through the course of time, the maritime industry has experienced technological innovations and advancements in many areas that truly metamorphosed the conduct of safe navigation, the radio-communications field and shed light to many chronic issues of the industry. In an epoch of various significant advancements in many areas of the operation of a vessel, it is quite surprising to notice that analogous progress has not been made in the manifestation/evacuation procedures followed today on cruise and …

A Post From The Woods: Social Media, Well-Being And Our Connection To The Natural World, Mark A. Flynn, Emery Veilleux, Alexandru Stana
Communication Studies Faculty Works
Research on our connection to nature (CTN) and sense of well-being has gained increased attention in recent years. It is often argued that CTN is an important, yet diminishing, human need, especially when juxtaposed with our increased time spent with screens and social media. Yet, little is known about the potential for social media, CTN, and well-being to form positive relationships. From the self-presentation framework, this study sought to better understand these relationships by examining the connection between three forms of nature posts (self, friends’, and celebrities’), CTN, and two forms of well-being (vitality and body appreciation). Results from a …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among and impact of creativity skills training, domain-specific creativity, and creative self-efficacy in adult alumni of a youth creativity skills training experience. This research further aims to remediate the deficiency of existing creativity research regarding the relationship between domain-specific creativity, creativity skills training, and creative self-efficacy. This study employs a mixed-method approach to address four research questions regarding the impact of a creativity skills training experience from adult alumni of Destination Imagination, an educational experience designed to enhance creativity. The Amusement Park Theoretical Model of Creativity acts as a theoretical …
Female Masculinity In The Embodied Beowulf Wetlands: A New, Radical, Ecofeminist Approach, Teresa Pilgrim
Female Masculinity In The Embodied Beowulf Wetlands: A New, Radical, Ecofeminist Approach, Teresa Pilgrim
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
This article argues that the embodied characterization of Grendel’s mother offers us an alternative heroic model for women, from the titular hero, Beowulf, around whose heroic life and legacy the Old English poem is structured and more usually celebrated. In doing so, it addresses the problematic legacy of the heroic, masculinist poem and its pedagogical role as a canonical text for English literature and national identity which also informs our cultural attitudes to gender-based violence. This article examines female masculinity in the embodied Beowulf wetlands to recover an alternative, powerful, legacy for feminism. Grounded within previous feminist, queer, ecofeminist, and …

The Mozart Conversation Or The Aria Of Nannerl Mozart: Drama In Three Acts And Two Tableaux, Emmanuel M. Dubois
The Mozart Conversation Or The Aria Of Nannerl Mozart: Drama In Three Acts And Two Tableaux, Emmanuel M. Dubois
Emmanuel Dubois Compositions
1 play (v + 66 pages) ; includes Synopsis, Cast of characters, Setting, Costumes, Props
The full-length historic drama examines the impact of emerging feminism in the Mozart family during the Enlightenment era.
As social changes cause the rejection of sexism, Nannerl, Mozart's sister disrupts male ordained traditions as she affirms her genius as a musician. The new social trends disrupt the affectionate relationship with her brother Wolfgang, who is psychologically exhausted by the stress to perform. The parents, Leopold and Anna Maria, invoke the respect of old traditions to exploit financially the genius of their son and to minimize …
