Documentary photography has been a historically difficult medium to define. Is it art, or journalism or somewhere in between? Over time, the medium has undergone several redefinitions as photography became more accessible to the masses through technological advances, and its inclusion in museum spaces. By examining the history of photography, the elitist motivations of museums in the early twentieth century, and the curatorial practices of landmark photographic shows organized by Alfred Stieglitz of the Photo-Secessionist movement, Roy Stryker of the Farm Security Administration, and Beaumont Newhall, Edward Steichen, and John Szarkowski of the Department of Photography at MoMA, this paper …

This dissertation explores the relationship between disability and art in individual and organizational narratives told in the context of art programs that are designed to provide meaningful and inclusive experiences for people with disabilities outside of “art therapy.” Findings of narrative and thematic analysis of the websites of two non-profit disability centered arts education organizations, autobiographical sketches of disabled artists, and in-depth family history interviews with parents of people with disabilities suggest that the clear cut boxes created by scholarly and social movements narratives of disability do not map neatly onto the lived experiences of people with disabilities, their families, …

The remarkable life of early-twentieth-century British adventurer Gertrude Bell has been well documented through her biographies and numerous travel books. Bell’s role as a grand strategist for the British government in the Middle East during World War I and the postwar period, however, is surprisingly understudied. The history of Camp Blanding, a World War II training facility, has its origins in the Florida National Guard. Beginning in 1907, the Florida National Guard trained at Black Point on the St. Johns River, just southwest of Jacksonville. The War Department held an adjacent site where many ranges were located. Training involved some monthly drill periods, but focused primarily on summer encampments.

The newsletter was established in early 2020 when DMACC closed its facilities due to the coronavirus pandemic. In recent years, students’ standardized test scores have become one of the major measurements for students’ learning. However, music as a non-tested subject is often viewed as a lesser valued subject compared to core subjects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact music programs have on student academic achievement and attendance rate. The data was collected from one middle school of a large school district located in the northeast of Missouri. The study population includes sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students who enrolled in the 2017-2018, 2018-2019, and 2020-2021 school years. The population was divided into students who …

The preoperative assessment is an integral component in the prevention of perioperative complications and costly procedure cancellations. Efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of the preoperative assessment have included the use of surgical safety checklists in the preoperative and postoperative phases of care. Patient information obtained in the preoperative setting provides the foundational structure for the information relayed down the clinical pathway. Strategies to improve the quality and integrity of the preoperative assessment are needed to ensure the patient’s safety and avoid procedure delays.

Research on malevolent creativity has rarely linked the generation of harmful ideas with their implementation (i.e., malevolent innovation). To explain why people might act upon their malevolently creative ideas, we drew on affective events theory. Specifically, given evidence that aggressive and creative thought events can elicit positive emotions, we argued that generating new and harmful ideas can evoke positive emotional states that make malevolent innovation a more desirable course of action. We first tested our mediational pathway in two studies with different malevolent creativity tasks. Finding only partial support for our predictions in Study 1 (N = 126), but …

The obituary for ninety-four-year-old Confederate veteran Charles Wood notes some episodes from his Civil War experience: captured at the Battle of Antietam, service in the defense of Charleston, South Carolina, and his presence at the surrender of General Joseph E.Johnston's army at Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1865. Missing is any mention of Wood's military service in Florida in 1861-1862. Whether the obituary writer was not aware of Wood's time in Florida or decided that period was not significant enough to include in the account of Wood's life is unknown. Panic At The Picture Show: Southern Movie Theatre Culture And The Struggle To Desegregate, Susannah L. Broun

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

This paper explores the complex desegregation process of movie theatres in the southern United States. Building off of historiography that investigates regulations of postwar teenage sexuality and recent scholarly work that acknowledges the link between sexuality and civil rights, I argue that movie theatres had a uniquely delayed desegregation process due to perceived sexual intrigue of the dark, private theatre space. Through analysis of drive-in and hardtop theatres, censorship of on-screen content, and youth involvement in desegregation, I contend that anxieties of interracial intimacy and unsupervised teenage sexuality produced this especially prolonged integration process.

In two case studies from Pakistan, which I then link to Afghanistan (under the Taliban before and after the Soviet/US proxy war there) as well as the Farmer’s Movement in India—I wish to proffer an intersectional analysis of debates around the issue of women’s rights in the global south. Feminist artivism (art-as-activism), can help build solidarities to mount resistances against globally-inflected state repression in our age of neoliberal economic and religious fundamentalisms, which, working in tandem, seek to roll back the rights of women and minorities in and across South Asia, as elsewhere.

Young Dalit men and women are changing the narrative of casteist oppression in India. Youth activists perform protest songs in the genre of rap and gaana, using elements of slam poetry and rap from African American artists and blending them with local musical innovations. The performances have deliberate messaging, signaling particular caste and gender injustices, both current and historical. This paper will analyze Dalit youth performances of rap, gaana, and street theater (koothu) in South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, to understand the poetics of protest against caste and gender oppression.
