Designing For Yiddish Drama, Naomi Marin
Designing For Yiddish Drama, Naomi Marin
Theater Summer Fellows
"Designing for Yiddish Drama" explores the questions of the relationship between culture and design and what influences a design or designer. It also demonstrates two designs for a Yiddish play, "The Dybbuk," by S. Ansky.
Sexing The Stage: Designing Sets For Queer Plays, Elliot Cetinski
Sexing The Stage: Designing Sets For Queer Plays, Elliot Cetinski
Theater Summer Fellows
How can we design queer plays in a way that acknowledges challenging content and celebrates queer theater history? How does a set designer use the research on a play’s challenging content and its historical relevance to influence the design and aid in telling the story? What are the tools and processes indispensable to a scenic designer’s creative process? Answers to all of these questions are the goal of my project, where I am exploring the queer plays of 1920s’ playwright Mae West and designing the set for her play The Pleasure Man through a modern queer lens. As a queer …

Pride And Prejudice: A Modern, Queer Retelling For The Stage, Kate Isabel Foley
Theater Summer Fellows
In the course of studying LGBTQ topics in a queer drama class, I noticed that there was a glaring omission in our readings: the “B.” However, this lack of bisexual representation wasn’t due to a poor syllabus, but to a dismaying lack of bisexual representation in theatre as a whole. This observation, as well as my own experience as a bisexual woman, motivated me to use my love of writing and theatre to fill the void. After performing in Pride and Prejudice at Ursinus, I knew that Jane Austen’s story was the key to me bringing visibility to an underserved, …

“Good War” On The Cool Medium: The Cold War's Influence On The Portrayal Of World War Ii On American Television, Michael A. Losasso
“Good War” On The Cool Medium: The Cold War's Influence On The Portrayal Of World War Ii On American Television, Michael A. Losasso
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a cultural history of the Cold War’s influence on the portrayal of World War II on American television. In it, I chronicle the production, reception, and presentation of the war of three prominent American-produced documentary series from three periods of the Cold War – Victory at Sea (1952-1953), The Twentieth Century (1957-1966), and The Unknown War (1978). The dissertation posits that from the 1940s-1960s, the television portrayal of World War II was an embodiment of the values- that the United Sates was “fighting” for through a “triumphalist” narrative of a “just war” which recast the role of …
An Investigation Of The Rhetorical And Representational Aspects Of Bleed Green, Jacob A. Segura
An Investigation Of The Rhetorical And Representational Aspects Of Bleed Green, Jacob A. Segura
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
This essay is a retroactive examination of a personal narrative titled Bleed Green, a story that characterizes my experience working for the supermarket Publix. I performed Bleed Green in front of an audience at the KSU Tellers' Spring 2021 Showcase. This essay serves both to analyze the rhetorical methods of my story and to precede the script of the performance, which accompanies this essay. In the essay, I contextualize the story through the lens of three widely underutilized concepts from various disciplines: framing, foregrounding and backgrounding, and representation and agency. Storytellers often critically analyze their works, particularly with the …
Mestiza Teatro: An Examination On The Historical Artform Of The Latina / Chicana Theatre Collective, Cheyenne Felicitas Flores
Mestiza Teatro: An Examination On The Historical Artform Of The Latina / Chicana Theatre Collective, Cheyenne Felicitas Flores
Theses and Dissertations
Teatro groups were a form of devised theatre that came to shape after the influential times of the Chicano National Movement of the 1960s and 70s. Due to its strong relationship with the movement, teatro became the epitome of performance culture for the Chicano/Latino public. But as Chicana scholars argue, the female narrative on stage through the use of teatro was limited, static, dichotomous, and misrepresented. This confining restriction to seeing Latina performers only as mothers, strippers, maids, and other stereotypical roles is still present today. This paper aims to articulate that this gender-subordinate representation has a history in formation, …
The Differing Of Worldviews Between Soviet And Post-Soviet Russians, Jodie David Vesely
The Differing Of Worldviews Between Soviet And Post-Soviet Russians, Jodie David Vesely
Masters Theses
The early 1990s’ foreign missionary flood into St. Petersburg, Russia led to a seemingly large spiritual harvest. However, over the years as the reported spiritual fruit substantially decreased, it was soon discovered that this harvest was actually an illusion. Research has shown that overall worldview was not implemented into missionary efforts like it should have been. Statistics reveal a declining trend in true believers in Russia, and as a new generation of Russians are rising up, so are the number of atheists in St. Petersburg. In searching for a solution to reverse this trend and more effectively reach Russians by …

The Implementation And Effective Use Of Graphic Organizers In The Classroom: Graphic Organizers To The Rescue, Fabienne Sara Nicholas
The Implementation And Effective Use Of Graphic Organizers In The Classroom: Graphic Organizers To The Rescue, Fabienne Sara Nicholas
LC Journal of Special Education
Many students are faced with the daily routines and demands of reading complex, ambiguous, de-motivating text book materials which pose no significance to them, and in many situations, they are unable to derive meaning or make sense of what they have read. One of the many unfortunate circumstances that students with learning disabilities have to face daily include challenging tasks, which are comprised of: texts not being reader-friendly, text materials written above their reading and comprehension level, text which focuses on skills instruction in isolation, and, text which requires higher-level thinking and reasoning. This sometimes leads to frustration. Students with …

Art As Experience: A Case For Art Museum Field Trips In New Mexico’S Public School Art Education, Zoila A. Caamaño-Pumarol
Art As Experience: A Case For Art Museum Field Trips In New Mexico’S Public School Art Education, Zoila A. Caamaño-Pumarol
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Since 2011, multiple studies have found that school field trips to art museums and other cultural institutions produce measurable improvements in standardized test scores, academic engagement, and substantial improvements across a range of factors including empathy, critical thinking skills, and creativity. These findings are especially prominent with children in rural areas, from low-income families, and non-Native English speakers. Nevertheless, the priorities in U.S. public education have shifted away from field trips and art education since the 1980s.
In this case study licensed art teachers in the New Mexico K to 12 public schools shared their experiences, discussed the obstacles they …

Enhancing Learning Through The Use Of Graphic Organizers: A Review Of The Literature, Jacqueline Lubin, Marcelline Sewak
Enhancing Learning Through The Use Of Graphic Organizers: A Review Of The Literature, Jacqueline Lubin, Marcelline Sewak
LC Journal of Special Education
According to Meyen, Vergason andWhelan (1996) graphic organizers are “visual displays teachers use to organize information in a manner that makes information easier to understand and learn” (p.132). There are several types of graphic organizers. Some examples include semantic maps, cognitive maps, story maps, concept maps, Venn diagrams and unit organizers. Researchers agree that graphic organizers are effective tools that can improve student’s performance in content areas. Therefore, this paper will delve into answering the following questions: 1. How do graphic organizers enhance comprehension? 2. How can graphic organizers enhance the acquisition of content in Social Studies? 3. Why use …
Experimental Studies On Prosocial, Divisive And Discriminatory Behavior, Chen Zhang
Experimental Studies On Prosocial, Divisive And Discriminatory Behavior, Chen Zhang
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
My PhD thesis contains three experiments: two of them studying prosocial and divisive behavior, guided by Tirole’s (2021) models, and the third studying discriminatory behavior. The first study investigates how people's prosociality changes as public spheres expand. Utilizing the advancement of information technologies, states have begun to introduce social scores to rate and publicize some behaviors in social interactions. With social scores, social interactions are thus divided into a public sphere, which is publicly observable, and a private sphere, which is not. Guided by Tirole’s (2021) model, we experimentally investigate whether social scores promote cooperation in a population with repeated, …

Multilingualism And The Social Status Of Women In The City Of Osijek In The 19th And Early 20th Centuries, Ljubica Kordic, Visnja Lachner
Journal of International Women's Studies
The authors strive to present the social status of women in Croatian cities in the 19th and early 20th centuries on the example of the multilingual city of Osijek. The main goal of the paper is to determine the social position of women at that time and to examine whether and to which extent it was influenced by their knowledge of three languages spoken in the multilingual milieu of the city: Croatian, German, and Hungarian. The corpus of the research encompasses job announcements and advertisements related to women in two local newspapers in the German language Die Drau …
Reconsidering The Victorian Angel In The Light Of Butler’S Concept Of Performativity, Monia Chouari
Reconsidering The Victorian Angel In The Light Of Butler’S Concept Of Performativity, Monia Chouari
Journal of International Women's Studies
Amid the fast changes and repercussions of the French and Industrial Revolutions in the 19th century, women's critical status in the transitory period in Britain stimulated the Victorian elite, namely women novelists like Elizabeth Gaskell, to raise the complex issue of femininity and womanhood to establish femininity as an agency. Interrogating the predominant concept of a woman as an angel, this study sets forth to examine the mechanisms of the building-up of women characters wrestling with the Victorian ideal of the angel for a sweet home that has been established by leading figures and theorists of domestic ideology such …
