The main question of the short story is who is Ares? It's well known he is the war god of ancient Greek mythos and individuals interested in Greek Mythology could tell you he is one of several war gods, who specifically embodies the brutality of war. I bother to explore this question as Ares doesn't make much of an appearance in mythology and when he does it's in a rather demeaning light. Adapting The Classics: Making The Invisible Visible, Kate Isabel Foley

This project seeks to answer the question, “How can a writer use an old story to shine new light on modern issues and make the invisible visible?” My adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is a genderbent retelling with queer themes while my adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan is a dark reimagining of Mrs. Darling as an antihero protagonist who must become Captain Hook to try to save her children. Both my research and these two plays focus on bringing visibility to marginalized communities, specifically women and members of the queer community.

This paper examines reading Station Eleven in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. There is also a heavy relation of the text with the usage of the Shakespearean works, other arts within the novel, and the keeping of unnecessary items by the protagonist with the overall message of the text. Ultimately, Station Eleven exposes the importance of the arts, even in times of crisis. Considering the recent Covid-19 pandemic, we can see the novel’s argument: “survival is insufficient” play out in reality. Fundraising is an important element to the success of any nonprofit organization, but arts organizations have unique opportunities to produce exciting, engaging, and creative fundraising events that coincide with their season programming. My thesis will explore what makes a successful fundraising event and compare best practices with the practices used at Western Michigan University for the annual Theatre Guild President’s Performance. “Len” was born in the Bronx to Hungarian immigrants who immigrated to the United States in their early twenties. Len’s mother was a housekeeper in Brooklyn until she married Len’s father, a factory worker. After marriage, Len’s mother became a homemaker, and both of Len’s parents moved to the Bronx. Len’s mother had aspirations for him to become a rabbi, and as a result, he attended yeshiva before electing to leave parochial school for high school. Len’s family lived within two blocks of the yeshiva for the first fourteen years of his life, and Len describes his childhood as insular …

As virtual reality applications become more accessible to the general public, the opportunity for immoral user interactions has shifted from possible to probable. While although virtual reality applications have revolutionized the tech industry, they have also initiated an evolution of virtual crimes, such as virtual rape. Virtual rape refers to when a virtual user exploits their avatar to rape the avatar of another virtual user. When virtual rape occurs, user rapists are often left unpunished, and user victims are often left without recourse. The United States judiciary has historically treated some criminal defendants worse than others. This paper seeks to shed light on the current shortcomings of the judiciary as it relates to lyricists. Specifically, prosecutors are targeting rap artists on trial for various crimes by seeking to admit their rap lyrics as propensity evidence. This paper is divided into three parts. First, it aims to examine a small aspect of free speech in America and points out its various problems. Artistic careers, including those in film, are both competitive and dependent on the responses of critics and audiences. People in film careers take different paths; one of them is writing screenplays. Researching screenwriting and the careers of two professional women screenwriters, Diablo Cody and Nancy Meyers, I sought to answer three central questions: how does writing create career paths, what are those careers, and what is it like writing a story?

Japan: Where Did All The People Go? An Empirical Study On Economic And Social Impacts On Low Fertility In Japan, Sasha Heasley

Business and Economics Honors Papers

This project analyzed potential impacts on the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in Japan (2010 and 2015), which is dealing with both a declining population and an ageing population in parallel. Results indicate that income per person has the largest impact on TFR, and it is highly considered when making fertility decisions. Results also show that government policies are largely ineffective in impacting TFR. Results were obtained through two panel regressions and two Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions, in which TFR was the dependent variable.

Health Professions Education

Background. The arts and humanities form a critical part of medical education. In this study, we explore medical students' reflections following an arts and humanities experience. An intensive day and a half long program focused on music and reflection was designed for first-year students at Harvard Medical School. Methods. Students completed an evaluation of the experience with both open-ended and Likert scale questions. Data were analyzed using a mixed methods approach. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze quantitative data and inductive content analysis for qualitative data. Results. 168 first-year medical and dental students participated in the activity. Professional dancers spend numerous hours immersed into dance culture every single day, learning new technique, practicing choreography, and exercising to stay fit. This study explores how dance affects the self-confidence and self-esteem of dance students. Utilizing surveys, the self-confidence and self-esteem of dance students at BGSU is compared to non-performing arts students. The study of psychology allows for proper analysis on the differences between the two groups, why a difference might occur, and how self-confidence and self-esteem is affected. After gathering data on emotions, perfectionism, comparison, group versus individual performances, personal thoughts, and body image, it was found that dancers …
