Goemai/Ankwei Religiosity: Understanding Indigenous Divinity In Relation To Christianity, Edward Muge
Goemai/Ankwei Religiosity: Understanding Indigenous Divinity In Relation To Christianity, Edward Muge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Postcolonial/decolonial thinking developed in response to modernity’s colonial logic that glorified and universalized the Western locus of enunciation, subjectivity, and history. The prioritization of Western epistemology, hierarchization of being based on race, gender, and religion, and the universalization of Western Christian religion relegated all other modes of being, knowing, and accessing the Divine to the periphery. For a long time, indigenous people have accepted the Western linear worldview that makes them the exemplars of the whites (Euro-Americans) in their primordial state of Western history and development. The goal of the Western colonial matrix of power is the subsumption of …

Social Media Platforms' Reckoning: The Harmful Impact Of Tiktok's Algorithm On People Of Color, Melany Amarikwa
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
Social media platforms have become an integral part of our daily lives. The growing societal reliance on these social platforms calls for a greater understanding of how they impact and engage with people of color. TikTok's innovative use of recommendation algorithms has disrupted the social media industry. This Article exposes the harm people of color face on TikTok using Professor Anita L. Allen's "Black Opticon" framework. Further, it uncovers instances of discriminatory predation and exclusion on the platform and expands the framework to distinguish between discrimination platforms perpetuate actively (platform predation) and passively (private predation). Due to a lack of …

Implicit Leadership Theories In The Performing Arts, Alison Gillespie
Implicit Leadership Theories In The Performing Arts, Alison Gillespie
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Within the performing arts industry, the social and financial consequences of leadership failure have proven costly. Additionally, the industry is still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic’s disruption of standard operating procedures. Furthermore, leadership scholarship in the arts indicates that performing arts leaders are challenged by the need to balance artistry with administrative ability in their work (Secore, 2016).
As the performing arts industry endeavors to recover post-pandemic and to prevent future leadership failure, this study seeks to answer the question “what leadership expectations are held by those involved with the performing arts?” To answer this question, summative qualitative content analysis …

Sweat Equity: Lynn Nottage's Radical Dialectic Of Deindustrialization, Jocelyn L. Buckner
Theatre Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"Lynn Nottage has devoted her career to researching and telling stories of Black individuals and communities with expressed interest in laborers, advocating for their agency, humanity, and legacy. In her second Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Sweat, Nottage dramatizes more recent US history, illuminating the lives of workers marginalized by the deindustrialization of the Rust Belt in the early 2000s. Sweat is emblematic of Nottage's sustained effort to deploy playwriting as activism and stand in solidarity with those whose stories she chooses to tell. As a constant theme in her works, Lynn Nottage's stories align with marginalized workers' efforts and histories, …

Arthur Miller, Death Of A Salesman, Paige Moeller
Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Theses, Student Research, and Creative Work
In this thesis our rendition of Death of a Salesman turns the story by presenting it in the eyes of an African-American working man. With the influence of the infamous Arthur Miller, my take on this classic tale will demonstrate the maturity and elegance that I could manufacture during the intense process. The show had a surplus of challenges, one of the biggest being the content of the script itself with our contrasting vision, as well as sudden directorial shifts and character additions. This thesis will cover the entire process from initial designs, communication, tech process, and more. The complexity …
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’S The Marriage Of Figaro, Camille Lerner
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’S The Marriage Of Figaro, Camille Lerner
Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Theses, Student Research, and Creative Work
The Marriage of Figaro is generally considered to the world’s most popular operas, selling out across the world. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the school of music decided to tackle the monstrous task of putting on this production, and by collaborating with the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, brought in a design team that could meet the expectations, requirements, and demands of this monumental production. By working closely with collaborators, the university was able to, rather smoothly, create a moving performance that will be remembered by many.

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Theses, Student Research, and Creative Work
The Nebraska Repertory Theatre, in partnership with the Johnny Carson School of Theatre, Film, and Emerging Media Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, chose to produce Death of a Salesman, directed by Jacqueline Thompson, for the second show of their 2022-2023 season. Death of a Salesman was produced on the Howell Stage, a 300-seat proscenium theatre located in the Temple building on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. The graduate faculty assigned the role of Technical Director to me in May 2022. As technical director I was responsible for budgeting materials and labor, drafting and engineering scenery, managing personnel, maintaining …
