The purpose of the document is to chronicle the character creation of Carol in West Virginia University’s fall 2023 production of Alice Birch’s Anatomy of a Suicide. The following text will provide a detailed look at research on the playwright and my personal textual analysis in tandem with consultations with mental health professionals. Founded in 1902, the Stonega Coke & Coal Company was the largest coal operator in Virginia throughout the twentieth century, becoming even larger through its merger with the Westmoreland Coal Company in 1964. Over the course of this long history, the company used a brand of welfare capitalism aimed at keeping miners and their families satisfied enough with their living and working conditions that the workers would develop a sense of loyalty to the company. Management at SC&C termed these practices “contentment sociology.” While many coal operators began shifting away from such practices during the New Deal, SC&C maintained and …

The following document recounts the observations and consequences that result from my attempts at justifying the actions of Duke Vincentio in Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure. By following my experience through the duration of West Virginia University’s 2023 production of Measure for Measure, I examine the ramifications of justifying the Duke’s actions and the potentially harmful consequences such justifications could create with regard to the play’s reception. Additionally, this text outlines performance techniques, audience responses, rehearsal strategies, and progressive interpretations for one of Shakespeare’s most challenging characters in one of his most divisive plays.

This thesis will give an account of the lighting design process for Ride the Cyclone presented at West Virginia University. Not only will it focus on the role of a lighting designer in a theatrical production but also the production process from the first design meeting to striking the show. I will describe my process, what worked, what new approaches I tried, and evaluate the evolution of the lighting design. In addition, I will include the details of working alongside the other designers in this collaborative process. Research images, paperwork, and production photos will be used to detail the process.

This document explores the actor‘s process and performance of Edgar in the 2021 WVU/WVPB production of William Shakespeare‘s King Lear. This production was directed by Professor Jerry McGonigle and was filmed during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in partnership with West Virginia Public Broadcasting. This experimental project would go on to receive national distribution by the National Educational Television Association (NETA) and was also in consideration for a NETA award, in addition to receiving an Ohio Valley regional Emmy Award nomination as a finalist in the category of Arts/Entertainment – Short Form or Long Form Content. This plan was created for the City of Covington, Virginia which is located in the Western part of the state in the Blue Ridge Mountains. This plan aims to identify the goals and desires of local community members and business owners that prioritize economic growth in the downtown core. The City of Covington has many great assets, and the goal of this plan is to leverage these assets to assist with downtown revitalization. Recommendations in this plan relate to ideas of enhancing downtown, creating and strengthening anchor institutions, and create downtown as a tourist destination.

The Sue James Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Music Collection consists of books, sheet music, and music books ranging from 1893 to 1989. Most of the pieces of sheet music are original copies. The sheet music includes pieces written for piano, organ, violin, guitar, and the voice. All of the pieces include English lyrics. Many pieces have been translated from German and Latin. The sheet music was collected by Sue James and donated by James Clarkson.

This paper examines the influence that children’s media has on the formation of gender identity in young children. Through an analysis of the psychology behind children’s formation of gender, coupled with Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity and history acts, this paper delves into the media’s perpetuation of gender roles and highlights the its critical role in providing children with examples about how to consider and embody one’s gender. Children’s media still possesses gender stereotypes and traditional associations, despite modern movies’ attempts to shift away from harmful narratives. My sister sent me a post the other day on Instagram of an Trinidadian woman using this phrase, saying it was one of Indo-Caribbean origin. I was interested and asked my mom about it. My mom says that when she was younger my grandpa said it often around their house in Princes Town, Trinidad and Tobago. I was first introduced to the healing powers of art after working in an orphanage in Jamaica with children who had a wide range of disabilities. Some children were mute or unable to communicate, but art was a form of communication that brought us all together. Within the City of Richmond public school system, 31.7% of students are economically challenged and 13.1% of students are disabled (Education, 2022). The Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (‘SDA’) was passed to implement the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (1981) (‘CEDAW’). The note argues that the contemporary streaming industry, dominated by a few major platforms, mirrors the pre-Paramount era's anticompetitive practices, necessitating a reexamination of antitrust laws to address oligopolistic structures, protect independent creators, and ensure consumer access to diverse content. It contends that the repeal of the Paramount Decrees and the failure of current antitrust frameworks to adapt to the streaming industry's unique challenges have allowed media giants to grow unchecked, stifling competition and innovation.

With innovative technologies, various types of immersive digital experiences (IDEs) have gained significant attention in the past few years. Despite their popularity, little research has been conducted on the factors that examine visitors’ experiences and behavioral intentions. This study applies experience economy within the framework of the SOR (Stimulus-Organism-Response) theory, indicating the dimensions of IDE function as stimulus (S), mental imagery and attitude as the organism (O), and behavioral intentions as the response (R). The public health restrictions implemented by the Irish government due to Covid-19 resulted in one of the most extensive music industry lockdowns in Europe. Dublin, however, was already experiencing a large scale contraction of club culture. Prior to the pandemic, the physical spaces that dance music and club culture thrived in over the past 40 years had greatly diminished, many being demolished to make way for hotels and upmarket student accommodation. Modern Psychological Studies

Social interaction is important for human health and happiness, yet it may be in decline. In this study, we examined traits related to whether individuals interact with one another. A structured lab observation was used to determine if participants would interact with a confederate. We also measured their Need for Cognitive Closure (NFCC), Social Anxiety (SA), Intolerance for Uncertainty (IU), and the Big Five personality traits, and examined the relationship between these factors and preferred physical distance from the stranger. Only 20% of all participants interacted with a confederate. Predictors of social interaction included higher scores in the Big Five …

This oppression has motivated Jewish activists worldwide to fight back not only on behalf of the Jewish community but for many areas of perceived need. Jewish involvement in social activism in the U.S. has been particularly recognized by scholars of the labor and Civil Rights movements.
