Does Community Of Practice Theory Apply To Virtual Postgraduate Surgical Training?, Sherif Elnikety, Eman Badr Oct 2023

Does Community Of Practice Theory Apply To Virtual Postgraduate Surgical Training?, Sherif Elnikety, Eman Badr

Health Professions Education

Postgraduate surgical training has evolved over centuries as a result of changes in the community, advances in medicine, technological innovations, and the theoretical basis of training and education. While virtual training has provided a solution for geographical barriers, it did not provide a similar training experience compared to face-to-face interactions. Technical skills, in particular, were extremely difficult to teach virtually. Although the COVID-19 pandemic is over, and daily life is returning to normality, …

Vulnerability In Times Of War: The Necessity Of The Moral Third, Hille Haker Oct 2023

Vulnerability In Times Of War: The Necessity Of The Moral Third, Hille Haker

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Vulnerability as a critique of the one-sidedness of the principle of autonomy is at risk of overemphasizing the positive dimension of vulnerability. Moreover, in the discourse on vulnerability, the threat of dehumanization (or moral vulnerability) has not been scrutinized enough ethically. Therefore, the ethics of vulnerability is insufficient when faced with the force of war that requires the conceptualization of vulnerability for political-ethics. The Russian war in Ukraine demonstrates this weakness in a striking way: the called-for openness to the other as well as an active form of nonviolence, as promoted by Judith Butler, may not be an option in …

2023 Celebration Of Scholarship, Creativity, And Engagement, Todd Bruns, Diane Highland

Programs

Annually, Eastern Illinois University honors faculty achievements in the areas of research, creativity, and engagement. This year, the list of faculty accomplishments is again truly impressive, reflective of an engaged faculty committed to excellence and the ongoing pursuit and creation of knowledge. A number of these accomplishments occurred in collaboration with our students, who serve as co-authors, research assistants and partners in bringing these activities to fruition.
