Reading Rent: Interracial Relationships And Racial Hierarchies, Susanna A. Perez-Field
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In examining the musical Rent by Jonathan Larson (1995) and its film adaptation by Chris Columbus (2005), most scholarly work and analyses have focused on the work’s identity as a queer text. I assert that elements of this musical have been overlooked for its depth of racial and class hierarchies. Utilizing sociological theory and interracial relationships, I will examine characters and musical numbers to explore diversity and class positioning.
I will explore Rent for themes of racial, gender, and sexual identities and how they are presented through the friendships and romantic relationships of the eight principal characters (alphabetically): Angel, Benny, …

This article is an edited transcript of a dialogue between the comparative literature professor, musician and composer Kamran Rastegar and film scholar Shohini Chaudhuri. It explores his musical training and background, his roles as composer, music supervisor and musician, the process of film composing, approaches to music in film scholarship, and sound-image relations and musical choices in Jacir’s films Like Twenty …

How To Rewrite A Tagalog Novel Into An English Classic: Danton Remoto’S English Translation Of Lope K. Santos’S Banaag At Sikat, Chris Cañete Rodriguez Kelly
How To Rewrite A Tagalog Novel Into An English Classic: Danton Remoto’S English Translation Of Lope K. Santos’S Banaag At Sikat, Chris Cañete Rodriguez Kelly
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
To appeal to a contemporary global readership, Danton Remoto in his English translation of Lope K. Santos’s Banaag at Sikat omits much of the original’s political passages. Such an approach to translation, however, hollows out elements of the original. Following the work of Annette Damayanti Lienau and Akshya Saxena, this essay understands colonial and vernacular languages as dialectically interdependent. It argues that Remoto’s abridgement of Banaag at Sikat is produced not by a refusal to translate the Tagalog of the original, but a refusal to translate the coconstitutive difference between English and Tagalog, which inheres precisely in the excessive political …

Borobudur Temple And The Megalith Villages Of The Ngadha And Manggarai In The Light Of Indonesia’S Tourist Promotion; A Legacy Of Colonial Representation, Tular Sudarmadi
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
As a foreign exchange earner for the Indonesian government, the tourism industry has currently prioritized ten tourist destinations. Problematically, this promotion of the beauty and diversity of nature and ethnicty marginalizes and exoticizes a number of ethnic group and their areas. This promotion, which can be traced back to colonial times, still reflects the Dutch colonial legacy, particularly Darwinian social evolution. To clarify this situation, this article illustrates tourism promotion in the historical and socio-cultural contexts of Borobodur in Java and the megalith villages of the Ngadha and Manggarai people of Flores. It investigates the representation and articulation of colonial …

Art And Violence In Ayad Akhtar’S Disgraced: Reading Western Domination Over Muslim Representation In Amir And Emily’S Relationship, Mccalee Cain
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Ayad Akhtar’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Disgraced, grapples with Islamophobia, post-9/11 racialization of South Asians, and the possibilities of Muslim identity. The play recounts the tragic descent of Amir, a New York Lawyer and South Asian Muslim, from his precarious belonging in upper-class New York society to the devastating fulfillment of violent racial stereotypes about Muslim men. This paper considers Amir’s relationship with his wife Emily, a white artist, as a location of multifaceted and mutually inflicted violence that invites audiences to interrogate stereotypes about Muslim men and confront the harm of white domination over Muslim representation. Emily’s well-intentioned yet problematic …

Joyland: A Story Of Unquenchable Desires, Salma Javed
Journal of International Women's Studies
Contrary to the title, Saim Sadiq’s debut work Joyland is about struggling with gender identities and unquenchable desires in a conventional society. This heart-breaking drama of a conservative family belongs to the exceptional kind of cinema that sews craft with content. This poignant tale contains such intrigue that the viewers feel glued to the aching narrative until the very last minutes of the movie. The storyline follows three men protagonists from a damaged family, and four women characters, including a transgender woman. The story takes a turn when Haider, one of the main characters, falls in love with Biba, a …

Journal of International Women's Studies
Nigerian women account for almost half of the country’s population, yet they represent a minuscule percentage of elected positions. Many scholars have attributed this to the patriarchal system inherent in Nigeria. This study, however, submits that the rate at which women support women politicians during elections is a major contributing factor to unequal gender representation in Nigerian politics. The concept of the glass ceiling and postcolonial theory guided the explanatory framework for this study. The study was conducted among women within voting age in Ibadan, in southwestern Nigeria. The study adopted a mixed-method design to generalize and gain deep insights. …

Air Distribution Simulation And Comfort Evaluation Of Large Space Building Based On Rans And Les, Shen Zhang, Ming Cheng, Yifan Wang, Fankai Meng, Ting Li, Han Chen, Zhifeng Ji
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Air distribution simulation and thermal comfort evaluation for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) design of large space buildings is of great significance for the human thermal comfort improvement and the energy consumption reduction. By combining the steady analysis based on RANS and the transient analysis of large eddy simulation (LES), an air distribution simulation and thermal comfort evaluation process in large space buildings is established. Due to the low calculation consumption, the steady analysis based on RANS is conducted to efficiently evaluate the thermal comfort and the air quality under multiple working conditions. Considering the high computational consumption …

Form Is Function: New Comprehension Through Parametric Architecture, Visar Shllaku
UBT International Conference
While form and function are distinct elements in the design, they share an inseparable correlation. The form, in conjunction with the architectural space, embodies its intended function; the form itself is the function and structure of the architecture. In parametric design, the relation between form and function becomes closer. Functional requirements often direct the form with parameterization according to the needs and conditions presented or given as parameters. This paper explores the concept of "Form is Function" in the context of parametric architecture, examining how parametric design challenges conventional notions and offers new comprehension of the relation between form and …
