Structure Formation Inside Triaxial Dark Matter Halos: Galactic Disks, Bulges, And Bars, Clayton Heller, Isaac Shlosman, Evangelie Athanassoula Dec 2007

Structure Formation Inside Triaxial Dark Matter Halos: Galactic Disks, Bulges, And Bars, Clayton Heller, Isaac Shlosman, Evangelie Athanassoula

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We investigate formation and evolution of galactic disks immersed in assembling live DM halos. Models have been evolved from cosmological initial conditions and represent the collapse of an isolated density perturbation. The baryons include gas participating in star formation (SF) and stars with the energy feedback onto the ISM. We find that (1) the triaxial halo figure tumbling is insignificant and the angular momentum (J) is channeled into the internal circulation, while the baryonic collapse is stopped by the centrifugal barrier; (2) density response of the (disk) baryons is out of phase with DM, thus washing out the …

Development Of Effective Discipline Practices Of A Rural Georgia Elementary School, Laurie Hale Lewis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For U. S. schools, never had there been a crisis on the scale of what happened at the Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, when two students killed 12 students and one teacher, and injured 21 others before committing suicide (Barrios, 2001). Violence, or the threat of violence, has a direct impact on the quality of education provided and on the way teachers and students work together in the classroom (Winett, 1998). Welldisciplined, effective schools are not a product of chance; it takes administrators, teachers, students, and parents working together to provide an environment conducive to learning (Marzano & …

Maternal Plasma And Corresponding Egg Yolk Hormone Variation Within A Clutch And Across The Nesting Season Of The Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta), Tina Shuman Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In oviparous vertebrates, the maternal transfer of steroid hormones to egg yolk can vary among species, within and among clutches, seasonally, due to age, and in response to social and environmental cues. In previous studies, significant effects on hatchling phenotype, sex and survival have been attributed to a variation in egg yolk hormone levels. The differential allocation of yolk hormones in sea turtles, multiple clutching oviparous reptiles with a high reproductive output and temperature dependent sexdetermination (TSD), has yet to be investigated. This study examined the variation of maternally derived egg yolk hormones of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) …

Characterization Of Na+/H+Exchanger-3 (Nhe3) In The Gills Of Longhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus Octodecemspinosus), Curtis Eugene Lanier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Acid-base regulation is a vital mechanism in homeostasis. Fish must maintain optimal physiological acid-base parameters during changes in an aquatic habitat. Environmental factors such as changes in salinity affect fish ability to maintain optimal blood plasma ion concentrations. Ion regulation influences the fish ability to maintain optimal acid-base balance. The Na+/H+ Exchanger-3 (NHE-3) has been shown to be the primary membrane ion transporter responsible for acid-base balance in the mammalian kidney. The objective of this study is to characterize NHE-3 in the gills of longhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus octodecimspinosus).
