Alcohol And Environmental Justice: The Density Of Liquor Stores And Bars In Urban Neighborhoods In The United States, John Romley, Deborah Cohen, Jeanne Ringel, Roland Sturm

Roland Sturm

Objective: This study had two purposes: (1) to characterize the density of liquor stores and bars that individuals face according to race, economic status, and age in the urban United States and (2) to assess alternative measures of retailer density based on the road network and population. Method: We used census data on business counts and sociodemographic characteristics to compute the densities facing individuals in 9,361 urban zip codes. Results: Blacks face higher densities of liquor stores than do whites. The density of liquor stores is greater among nonwhites in lower-income areas than among whites in lower- and higher-income areas …

Improved Aperture For Modulation Transfer Function Measurement Of Detector Arrays Beyond The Nyquist Frequency, Alfred D. Ducharme, Sarah P. Temple Dec 2007

Improved Aperture For Modulation Transfer Function Measurement Of Detector Arrays Beyond The Nyquist Frequency, Alfred D. Ducharme, Sarah P. Temple

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The design of an aperture for the generation of laser speckle with a flat power spectrum covering a wide band of the measurement spatial-frequency range is presented. This aperture allows for the measurement of modulation transfer function (MTF) from zero to twice the Nyquist frequency of a two-dimensional detector array. This design mitigates many of the measurement problems inherent in other aperture designs. The MTF measurement of a CCD detector array is used to demonstrate the measurement technique and illustrate the advantages of the new aperture design.

Metal Modulation Epitaxy Growth For Extremely High Hole Concentrations Above 10(19) Cm(-3) In Gan, Gon Namkoong, Elaissa Trybus, Kyung Keun Lee, Michael Moseley, W. Alan Doolittle, David C. Look Dec 2007

Metal Modulation Epitaxy Growth For Extremely High Hole Concentrations Above 10(19) Cm(-3) In Gan, Gon Namkoong, Elaissa Trybus, Kyung Keun Lee, Michael Moseley, W. Alan Doolittle, David C. Look

Applied Research Center Publications

The free hole carriers in GaN have been limited to concentrations in the low 1018 cm−3 range due to the deep activation energy, lower solubility, and compensation from defects, therefore, limiting doping efficiency to about 1%. Herein, we report an enhanced doping efficiency up to ~10% in GaN by a periodic doping, metal modulation epitaxy growth technique. The hole concentrations grown by periodically modulating Ga atoms and Mg dopants were over ~1.5 x 1019 cm−3.

Unit Rectangle Visibility Graphs, Alice M. Dean, Joanna A. Ellis-Monaghan, Sarah J. Hamilton, Greta Pangborn

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Over the past twenty years, rectangle visibility graphs have generated consider- able interest, in part due to their applicability to VLSI chip design. Here we study unit rectangle visibility graphs, with fixed dimension restrictions more closely modeling the constrained dimensions of gates and other circuit components in computer chip applications. A graph G is a unit rectangle visibility graph (URVG) if its vertices can be represented by closed unit squares in the plane with sides parallel to the axes and pairwise disjoint interiors, in such a way that two vertices are adjacent if and only if there is a non-degenerate …

Identifying Methods Nurse Managers Can Implement To Foster A Supportive Environment For Staff Where Disruptive Behavior Exists, Kathleen Leavitt Dec 2007

Identifying Methods Nurse Managers Can Implement To Foster A Supportive Environment For Staff Where Disruptive Behavior Exists, Kathleen Leavitt

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

We can all imagine the ideal work environment, where you are respected, empowered, and provided with the resources to perform to the best of your ability everyday. Your skills would be acknowledged and the challenging work that is accomplished each day would be appreciated by peers, team members, and managers. However, in my work environment, an operating room, a phenomenon called "disruptive behavior" often interrupts the ability of achieving this desired state. Initially I was focused on this behavior being displayed by physicians but was awakened to the fact that they are not the only offenders and that many caregivers …

Illness Stories: From Recognizing The Significance In Care To Planning My Own Storied Practice, Jane Lachance Dec 2007

Illness Stories: From Recognizing The Significance In Care To Planning My Own Storied Practice, Jane Lachance

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

In this paper, stories of illness are identified as belonging to a specific genre of story that represents an ill person's interpretation of experience and hence the meaning(s) of illness. The ill person is recognized as member of a family embedded in a social setting with cultural mores that contribute to experience and meanings. The meaning of illness is significant because it affects the care of illness. This paper focuses on chronic illness, an illness without cure that is managed over a lifetime and is characterized by remission and exacerbation of symptoms. Our current bio-medical health care system reframes the …

A Study Of The Chinese Toy Market: Does An Oligopsony Structure Force Manufacturers To Cut Costs?, Y. Allen Chen Dec 2007

A Study Of The Chinese Toy Market: Does An Oligopsony Structure Force Manufacturers To Cut Costs?, Y. Allen Chen

Economics Theses

The growing incidence of product safety complaints pertaining to imported goods from China has been one of the most widely covered phenomena in 2007. China's reputation as the factory of the world suffered immensely, a result of product recalls ranging from poisoned dog food to children's toys saturated with lead. The Chinese government, as a result, attempted to repair their image as a producer of safe exports. These efforts culminated in the nationwide crackdown on the production on substandard goods and the arrest of 774 people on October 29, 2007. Pressures in the united States did not cease, however, with …

Why The No Child Left Behind Act Needs To Be Restructured To Accomplish Its Goals And How To Do It, Gershon M. Ratner Dec 2007

Why The No Child Left Behind Act Needs To Be Restructured To Accomplish Its Goals And How To Do It, Gershon M. Ratner

University of the District of Columbia Law Review

The No Child Left Behind Act ("NCLB" or the "Act") 1 has created a once in a lifetime opportunity to improve American public education. NCLB has embraced vital goals for the new Information Age: academic proficiency for virtually all public school students and elimination of the severe racial/income "achievement gap." The Act provides four pillars on which states and localities might build a bridge to reach the goals: higher standards; periodic testing to measure the extent to which the standards are being met; disaggregating test results by student subgroup; and reporting to the public. The critical question is "how to …

The Intrusions Of Politics On Science: A Look At Global Warming, Hesham Ossama Hassanien Dec 2007

The Intrusions Of Politics On Science: A Look At Global Warming, Hesham Ossama Hassanien

The Undergraduate Research Journal

Science has touched every aspect of our lives, adding value and comfort to our long hours of hard work - including small digital pens, computers, and even smart houses. The truth is, however, that not many of us are scientists, and the lack of knowledge as to specificities of the field often leaves us suspicious when examining political support a supposedly scientific endeavor might receive. Indeed, the often lucrative nature of science has helped promote the interaction between the scientific community and external institutions like corporations and political offices, a partnership that raises the question of whether this cooperation jeopardizes …

Youth Perspectives On Citizenship And Civic Engagement In Egypt, Nahla Mahgoub, Reham Morsi

The Undergraduate Research Journal

During the past two decades, Egypt has witnessed an enormous change in the way political affairs are handled. For this reason, concepts of citizenship and nationality have changed in the minds of all peoples, creating a need to come up with specific definitions of citizenship that provides a clear framework in which the government and its people can interact. Egypt has a special demographic distribution of the youth bulge-where the youth make up the majority of the population. For this reason it is important to asses how this youth bulge perceive the concepts of citizenship, nationality and civic engagement. This …
