The Politics Of Naming A Field: Evolution, Controversies, And Strategies Around What We Call “Women’S Studies”, Sydney Lemire
The Politics Of Naming A Field: Evolution, Controversies, And Strategies Around What We Call “Women’S Studies”, Sydney Lemire
Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies M.A. Final Projects
The name “Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies,” WGSS, is a name rooted in politics and the academy, evidenced by the evolution of the phrasing even in the field’s relatively short history. In an environment where WGSS is under attack from both neo-fascist policies and neo-liberal budget cuts, we must be certain to put our best, most representative foot forward. This project explores (1) the state of the field’s name today and how it has evolved, (2) why this nomenclature is unstable and contradictory, and (3) what the politics of naming reveal about the changes in the field, the challenges it …
Dimensions Of International Students’ Social Well-Being And Their Measurement: Validation Of Social Well-Being Instrument For International Students (Swbi), Kyu Yon Kim
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
There has been an increase in the number of international students coming to the United States to study. For school administrators and teachers to provide appropriate support for international students, it is important to use an appropriate scale to understand the well-being of this population. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a scale that measures the social well-being of international students and examine the relationship between social well-being and some dimensions of academic success. The study occurred across three phases: 1) item development, 2) assessment of psychometric properties of the scale, and 3) assessment of the …

A Validation Study Of The Occupational Depression Inventory In Poland And Ukraine, Krystyna Golonka, Karine O. Malysheva, Dominika Fortuna, Bożena Gulla, Serhii Lytvyn, Leon T. De Beer, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Renzo Bianchi
Publications and Research
This study examined the psychometric and structural properties of the Polish and Ukrainian versions of the Occupational Depression Inventory (ODI). We relied on two samples of Polish employees (NSample1 = 526, 47% female; NSample2 = 164, 64% female) and one sample of Ukrainian employees (NSample3 = 372, 73% female). In all samples, the ODI exhibited essential unidimensionality and high total-score reliability (e.g., McDonald’s omegas > 0.90). The homogeneity of the scale was strong (e.g., 0.59 ≤ scale-level Hs ≤ 0.68). The ODI’s total scores thus accurately ranked individuals on a latent occupational depression continuum. We found evidence of complete measurement invariance …

Mental Health Challenges And Resilience Among International Graduate Students In The United States, Md Rejaul Haque
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This research examines the experiences of international graduate students in the United States. It focuses on the challenges they face that can lead to mental health issues. I conducted in-depth focus group interviews through Zoom. Participants shared their stories, highlighting the stigma around mental health. I transcribed the interviews and analyzed them for themes. The findings show that international students deal with various difficulties, such as cultural differences and homesickness. They often find better support from informal peer networks rather than from institutional resources. The study highlights the importance of community engagement and cultural exchange in helping these students build …

Neurobiological Markers Of Risk For Psychopathology In Healthy Youth At Familial Risk For Depression, Bailey Holt-Gosselin
Neurobiological Markers Of Risk For Psychopathology In Healthy Youth At Familial Risk For Depression, Bailey Holt-Gosselin
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Family history of depression is a robust predictor of early-onset depression (Elsayed, Fields et al. 2019, Ho, Shah et al. 2022) as well as other types of psychopathology (van Santvoort, Hosman et al. 2015, van Dijk, Murphy et al. 2021) among youth. Youth are at especially high risk when the family members with depression are their parents; youth whose parents have depression are at a 3- to 5-fold increased risk for developing depression themselves (Lieb, Isensee et al. 2002, Williamson, Birmaher et al. 2004). Prior work has indicated that risk may be conferred through alterations in neurodevelopment that precede the …
The Temporal Dynamics Of Memory And Learning In Psychosis Proneness, William Nichols Koller
The Temporal Dynamics Of Memory And Learning In Psychosis Proneness, William Nichols Koller
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Psychosis is characterized by salient conflicts between reality and one’s experience of it, but the cognitive processes that give rise to these conflicts are not fully characterized. Similar conflicts are felt by many members of the general population, albeit to a lesser extent. By studying these experiences in a subclinical context (i.e., psychosis proneness), we stand to gain new insights about the cognitive processes that support psychotic-like thought across a continuum. In this dissertation, I propose an updated cognitive model that predicts a link between the positive and disorganized symptoms of psychosis and distinct disruptions in memory and learning. More …
(Meta-)Physical Artworks: Digital Augmentation In Art Observation, Macy A. Toppan
(Meta-)Physical Artworks: Digital Augmentation In Art Observation, Macy A. Toppan
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Augmented art— the subgenre of art that incorporates physical and digital artwork— is a rapidly growing field driven by advancing technology and a new generation for whom that tech is a given. Yet the presence of media like augmented and virtual reality in exhibition remains a controversial subject. Rather than focusing on the many theoretical debates about whether digital pieces can qualify as "good" art, we study it in practice through the eyes of the casual art observer. This paper highlights the audience in a within-participant study that asked viewers to take in a physical sculpture intentionally built with virtual …

Using Biophilic Design To Enhance Resilience Of Urban Parks In Semarang City, Indonesia, Novia Sari Ristianti, Santy Paulla Dewi, Retno Susanti, Rina Kurniati, Naily Syafira Zain
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Biophilic design is an approach for creating resilient, sustainable cities by constructing resilient buildings that connect humans and nature by integrating natural adaptation and aesthetic appeal in urban spaces. Biophilic design enables improved climate resilience and mental health. Semarang City in Java, Indonesia is a concrete jungle metropolis that will benefit from the application of biophilic design. Although several urban parks are constructed in public areas, certain design elements remain extremely simple. For example, the vegetated-setting contextminimal and unable to generate sufficient interest in community physical activities. Hence, the connection between humans and nature is limited, which demonstrates the lack …

Heritage Values And Community Perception : A Look Into The Historic Ruins Of Dinajpur Rajbari, Murchana Madhury, Labanya Sarker
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
The establishment of the value and effective protection of historical ruins comprises a subject of rising interest, as evidenced by an increasing amount of research involving several disciplines. In Bangladesh, debates on the relevance of such abandoned, degraded, deformed, or empty structures—unlike other intact monuments in heritage studies—rarely take into account the attitude of the locals towards these ruins. Analyzing the case of Dinajpur Rajbari, Bangladesh, the paper intends to explore the value ascribed to historic ruins by the surrounding community. The study uses a case study approach built on Mason’s value typology, which has widely contributed to the identification …

The many birth control options available impact a woman’s life, as hormonal contraceptives are commonly used but often misunderstood. These contraceptives, which contain progestin only, or estrogen and progestin combined, can come in various forms such as pills, implants, IUDs, injections, the vaginal ring, and skin patches. They offer benefits such as reduced menstrual cramps and ectopic pregnancy risk. However, they may lead to adverse side effects which can include increased blood pressure, nausea, headaches, breakthrough bleeding, and a higher risk of blood clots, with research indicating a potential link between oral contraceptive use and a decline in the user’s …

While research has explored the positive effects of acupuncture on cancer and cancer treatment symptoms, a notable gap exists in understanding its impact on lower-income populations. These individuals encounter barriers to accessing acupuncture, such as limited availability, cost, and provider knowledge. This longitudinal study aims to assess the impact of community health fairs, featuring acupuncture information for breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced symptoms, on the acceptance and utilization rates of acupuncture among low-income women with breast cancer. Collaborating with the Women’s Cancer Resource Center and a local non-profit integrative cancer care clinic in Oakland, we will conduct a three-day health fair …
A Pulse For Progress – Examining The Efficacy Of Best Nursing Developmental Care Practices For Children With Congenital Heart Disease At Risk For Developmental Delay In The Pcicu: A Prospective Quasi-Experimental Cohort Study, Jasmyn Jansen
Nursing | Senior Theses
Emerging advances in pediatric cardiovascular surgery have significantly decreased the mortality rates in infants born with critical congenital heart disease (CHD), in turn, leading to increasing prevalence in adolescence and adulthood. At the same time, developmental delays (DD) are on the rise among children with CHD. Recent research suggests that prolonged exposure to the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU), with its environmental stressors, negatively implicates neurodevelopment raising the question, and risk, of DD. In January 2023, the American Heart Association (AHA) issued a scientific advisory calling hospitals to implement developmental care practices for hospitalized infants and young children with …
Addressing Disparity: A Waiting Room Intervention For Preeclampsia Prevention In African Americans, Morgan Semana

Previous research studies have demonstrated the positive impact education and social support has on reducing the risk of postpartum depression (PPD) when used separately. However, there exists a clear gap in understanding the combined effects of integrating both education and social support during the prenatal period on PPD. This longitudinal quasi-experimental study aims to evaluate the impact of an in-person prenatal PPD prevention program for the birthing person, requiring the presence of a support person on the reduction of PPD. Participants and their chosen support persons will receive information on PPD, including risk factors, signs and symptoms, preventative measures, and …
Improving Spiritual Care Competency Among Intensive Care Unit Nurses: Promoting Holistic Patient Care Towards End-Of-Life, Joanne Nguyen, Dana Bagis
Improving Spiritual Care Competency Among Intensive Care Unit Nurses: Promoting Holistic Patient Care Towards End-Of-Life, Joanne Nguyen, Dana Bagis
Nursing | Senior Theses
Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses play a crucial role in providing physiological stabilizing care in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, often marked by constant changes and variability in complex patients. Despite their specialization, the aspect of spiritual care tends to be overlooked, particularly in the context of end-of-life care. This is significant because previous studies have shown that a lack of spiritual care leads to poorer health outcomes, decreased coping, increased depression, and diminished quality of life for patients. This research proposal aims to investigate the spiritual care competency among ICU nurses who partake in spiritual care-based training, with the …

Unveiling New Realities: An In-Depth Analysis Of Virtual Reality's Impact On Postoperative Adolescents, Julia Tolentino
Unveiling New Realities: An In-Depth Analysis Of Virtual Reality's Impact On Postoperative Adolescents, Julia Tolentino
Nursing | Senior Theses
The traditional approach to postoperative pain management heavily relies on opioids, but there’s been a surge in their misuse and adverse effects, leading to a significant public health concern. This has led healthcare providers to incorporate a multimodal approach aimed at reducing opioid dependence. This proposal introduces an immersive component, virtual reality (VR), not as a replacement for opioids but as a complementary tool offering distinct advantages for enhancing postoperative pain management. By immersing patients in a virtual environment, VR effectively distracts them from pain and discomfort, allowing for reduced opioid dosages and mitigating the risk of opioid misuse. Additionally, …

Nurse Suicide: Examining Depression And Anxiety In Critical Care Settings, Arianna Bernardine Barata
Nursing | Senior Theses
Nurses play a critical role in healthcare, yet the demanding work environment often exposes them to stressors, leading to the development of depression and anxiety. According to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) (2021), 50.8% of nurses have stress, 74% have anxiety, 70.8% have depression, and 79.1% have at least one of them. Burnout, understaffing, COVID fatigue, alarm fatigue, patient ratios, and disrupted sleep patterns are some of the stressors nurses contend with in every shift. While some nurses may cope and overcome these challenges, many face more severe issues, such as suicide. Nurse suicide is an issue that has …
