College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works
This study examines the direct and indirect influences of health information orientation and social support on diabetes self-care behavior through self-efficacy and the moderating role of education on such indirect effects. Data were collected from Indian adults with type 2 diabetes using a self-administered questionnaire. Results suggest that self-efficacy fully mediates the link between health information orientation and diabetes self-care behaviors. In addition, social support is directly related to self-care behaviors and indirectly through self-efficacy. This indirect association was stronger among patients with higher education compared with those with a lower level of education. The results offer several public health …

This study investigates word-of-mouth network on YouTube in response to the crisis, patterns of co-commenting activities across selected YouTube videos, as well as public responses to the incident by employing social and semantic network analysis. A total of 512 YouTube videos featuring the crisis from December 8, 2014 through …
Facilitating Appropriate Clergy Response To Abuse Among Parishioners In The Wisconsin Conference Of Seventh-Day Advetnists, Nicholas S. Moore
Facilitating Appropriate Clergy Response To Abuse Among Parishioners In The Wisconsin Conference Of Seventh-Day Advetnists, Nicholas S. Moore
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Clergy are frequently the initial point of contact for parishioners seeking guidance and counseling on various life issues and challenges. In certain instances, these matters may be linked to physical and/or sexual abuse, either directly or indirectly. Many clergy have not had the opportunity to receive training on recognizing the signs, symptoms, prevalence, causes, and effects of abuse, or on how and when to refer individuals to specialists or law enforcement when abuse is suspected. This can lead to inadequate emotional and spiritual healing at best, and further psychological damage at worst, for parishioners, with effects that may last …
A Strategy To Equip Selected Members Of The Gaeta Church To Build Bridges With Immigrants To Draw Them Toward The Fellowship Of The Congregation, Rebecca Kessewa Gaisie
A Strategy To Equip Selected Members Of The Gaeta Church To Build Bridges With Immigrants To Draw Them Toward The Fellowship Of The Congregation, Rebecca Kessewa Gaisie
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Due to the outbreak of a civil war in Libya in 2011, Italy has been experiencing a great influx of immigrants. Many are scattered throughout Italy, including Gaeta. A majority of the Italian members of Gaeta Church do not understand and engage in the call of God to bring all people into the fellowship of the church. This causes a lack of interest in building bridges to reach immigrants.
Method
The task of this project was to develop, implement, and evaluate a strategy to equip some members of Gaeta church to build bridges with immigrants to draw them toward …
Spiritual Care For Staff During Trauma And Acute Stress At Adventist Healthcare, Sydney: An Ethnographic Study, Stenoy Stephenson
Spiritual Care For Staff During Trauma And Acute Stress At Adventist Healthcare, Sydney: An Ethnographic Study, Stenoy Stephenson
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Health Care is evolving from an exclusive concentration on the physical dimension of illness to a more holistic model which considers the psychosocial and the spiritual. There seems to be a growing need for the spiritual care of the staff who have experienced trauma and acute stress. Although the need for spiritual care in health care services has been largely advocated, there is arguably a lack of attention to the spiritual care needs of staff dealing with traumatic situations and acute stress. The task of this project is to develop, implement, and evaluate spiritual care intervention with staff who …
Self-Care Through Clinical Pastoral Education For Emotional Healing Of Pastoral Staff In The United States: A Case Study For Exploring Relationships, Roberto Vizcaino
Self-Care Through Clinical Pastoral Education For Emotional Healing Of Pastoral Staff In The United States: A Case Study For Exploring Relationships, Roberto Vizcaino
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
I have observed that many pastors are suffering from problems experienced in the past and in the present. The problems are both personal (e.g., lack of self-care and depression) and national (e.g., lack of support for social recovery from hurricanes and other natural and socioeconomic catastrophes). Some of the problems experienced by these pastors are because they have not had the opportunity to identify the traumas they experienced in their lives and that still affect them now. In addition, many of them do not have a place where they can share their problems with their colleagues, be heard, supported, …

Patients With Diabetes: Increasing Identification And Referral For Common Mental Health Issues, Anastasia M. Lunina
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing global health emergencies of the 21st century (IDF, 2021), with over 37 million Americans currently living with the condition (CDC, 2023). People with diabetes are at increased risk for mental health disorders such as diabetes distress, depression, and anxiety, which can worsen disease outcomes (ADA, 2021; Nouwen et al., 2019). These comorbidities heighten the risk of complications, hospitalizations, and mortality (Egede et al., 2010). However, a notable gap exists in primary care providers’ ability to address mental health concerns in this population (Jones et al., 2021). This Quality Improvement (QI) project aimed to enhance …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Telemedicine is a more beneficial technology that can make it easier for people to get preventive treatment and help their long-term health. Missed appointments are detrimental to clients’ health, create scheduling problems, reduce productivity, increase healthcare costs, cause revenue loss, and diminish access to adequate healthcare for clients who could have been seen in the unused appointment slots. Non-adherence to medication is another area of concern associated with poorer prognosis and incremental differences in treatment cost. By examining the efficacy of telehealth services in maintaining treatment adherence among ethnic minority populations, this project aimed to shed light on how digital …

Evidence-Based Program Evaluation Of A Primary Care Weight Loss Plan, Joy L. Mowett-Fuller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This evidence-based program evaluation assesses the effectiveness and patient adherence to a structured weight loss intervention at a local primary care clinic. The program targeted 21 adults, aged 27-60, with BMI ≥ 27 kg/m², many of whom faced cardiovascular risks. Over nine months, participants engaged in a program combining semaglutide injections, dietary guidance, behavioral counseling, and regular physical activity. Baseline and follow-up measures at three, six, and nine months evaluated outcomes alongside self-reported quality of life assessments. The results demonstrated significant reductions in BMI and weight (p < 0.01, CI: 95%), with participants reporting increased confidence and self-efficacy. The findings underscore the effectiveness of a nurse-led, compassionate primary care approach to weight management. Recommendations include extending follow-up periods and integrating demographic considerations (education, race, culture) to enhance adherence and long-term success. This evaluation provides actionable insights for clinic and broader healthcare contexts, with plans for dissemination through faculty presentations, publications, and local and national conferences.

Participation In A Mindfulness Program To Improve Non-Motor Symptoms For Individuals With Parkinson’S Disease, Randi B. Loomis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This project aimed to address the challenge of managing non-motor symptoms in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) through a mindfulness-based intervention. Non-motor symptoms, including mood disturbances, cognitive impairments, and urinary issues, significantly impact the quality of life and are often overlooked in clinical practice. The mindfulness program demonstrated statistically significant reductions in UPDRS Part I scores post-intervention (t(4) = 5.31, p < .01), highlighting improvements in emotional and cognitive symptoms. NMSS data revealed Mood/Cognition and Urinary domains as key areas of concern, further emphasizing the need for targeted interventions. Participants reported enhanced mood, relaxation, and social connection, identifying these as the most valued aspects of the program. Recommendations include expanding access to mindfulness classes, offering tiered options for diverse skill levels, and integrating the program into standard Parkinson’s care. As a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) )-led initiative, this project underscores the critical role of DNPs in implementing evidence-based, patient-centered interventions to address complex healthcare challenges.

The Dark Side Of Category Expansion: Will Existing Ones Pay The Price?, Qi Yu, Ron Berman, Eric Bradlow
The Dark Side Of Category Expansion: Will Existing Ones Pay The Price?, Qi Yu, Ron Berman, Eric Bradlow
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Many retailers that manage product assortments believe that “more is better”. We challenge this conventional wisdom by demonstrating that a retailer may face more price-sensitive demand for existing categories after a category expansion. While introducing a new category to a store may increase the demand for the existing ones, this increase sometimes suggests a movement towards the steeper part of the demand curve and an increase in price sensitivity. We build a model of multi-category purchases with transportation costs and generate a series of theoretical predictions of the changes in price sensitivity after category expansion. We then estimate the model …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Development paradigms under the sustainable development goals (SDGs) identify cultural capital as an indispensable asset for development in less developed countries. However, the phenomenon of culture and underdevelopment nexus has attracted little research attention in Ghana. The study used modernization theory and ethnographic research methodology to explore the role of cultural capital deficits in northern Ghana's underdevelopment. Our findings suggest a close correlation between cultural capital and underdevelopment relative to unethical attitudinal standards, value deficits, and an anti-development mindset. We recommend the inclusion of cultural reorientation in the design of development intervention programs to uphold high integrity standards. We further …
